i mean, having just spent my entire summer in a photo pit i have some strong opinions here but the artist should only give a shit about what's going on in the pit if it directly affects their show

can't find the thread argh

Any photo pit that isn't cleared out after the first three songs can fuck right off

Youth Ya Goon (Whiney G. Weingarten), Monday, 31 October 2011 20:09 (fourteen years ago)

In his explanation he says that the barricaded area where the photographers work is not fair to the fans. Other members of the group backed up his words.

seriously though, i don't begin to get the context here.

google sluething so hard right now (forksclovetofu), Monday, 31 October 2011 20:10 (fourteen years ago)

any fan who waited three hours to hang out in the front row wants to look at the fat bobbling hotdog neck of a Paste Magazine photographer leaping in front of them every four seconds, doy

Youth Ya Goon (Whiney G. Weingarten), Monday, 31 October 2011 20:13 (fourteen years ago)

I'm reminded of the perennial "don't meet your heroes" story, where somebody tried to meet S.M. in a bar and he was a jerk, and then same person never listens to The Magnetic Fields again. This is a given, everybody has that story. So tell me, why is one so willing to dismiss an artist's work based on their own personal experience with said artist, but less willing to dismiss an artist's work when their shitty behaviour happens to somebody else? Even if it is a photographer who stayed on past the third song

i don't mean "understand" as in "agree with" i mean "understand" like comprehend their opinion

Spin photographers will all be stunningly slim, in contrast.

Ned Raggett, Monday, 31 October 2011 20:15 (fourteen years ago)

i guess i don't even comprehend their opinion? like why are you so special that you don't get to have someone in front of you? welcome to seeing live music. and why should the artist give two fucks about this exactly? it's one thing if you've got a dumbshit photog actively blocking a group of people by standing on a box or something but these guys are doing the jobs that they've been asked to do, most likely by the band's/label's publicist! Don't hassle _them_!

google sluething so hard right now (forksclovetofu), Monday, 31 October 2011 20:20 (fourteen years ago)

I don't think it has anything to do with fans or anything, it has to do with "I'm a sexist asshole and I just thought up an excuse to hit this woman who's getting on my nerves"

I hate getting photographed, guess what, it comes with the job and if I don't like it I can fuck off to another job instead of being an asshole, fans aren't helpless children and are welcome to stomp on some photographer feet themselves only they don't do that because they don't have a stage to stomp from or a band & entourage to cower behind

thx to unregistered diggin this up:
To what degree will you support musicians who (openly, possibly or jokingly) include racist, sexist, homophobic, or bigoted messages in their music, or who privately hold such beliefs?

unorthodox economic revenge (Shakey Mo Collier), Monday, 31 October 2011 20:38 (fourteen years ago)

it's easier for me to distance art from the creator when it's on a disc. not so much when it is in person.

sadly I already bought my OFWGKTA ticket....as of right now, I'm considering either selling it or just not showing up (cuz either way they've already gotten my money). went on Twitter on the LOL-chance that Tyler might have condemned the action, but to nobody's surprise, he could give two shits.

i get that -- odd future's thing is v much stage diving all the time & whatever, there's a lot more tangible fan interaction than pretty much any indie rock show.

J0rdan S., Monday, 31 October 2011 20:54 (fourteen years ago)

possibly, tho I'm sure they're gonna say "THINKING THE ARTIST IS A DICK IS NOT ACCEPTABLE REASON TO GIVE YOU YOUR MONEY BACK"

Neanderthal, Monday, 31 October 2011 20:55 (fourteen years ago)

but, it's worth a try.

submitted a professional request to the ticket broker. i'm not gonna go now even if I don't get my money back, but would be nice if I got the money back so I could use it for one of the other hip hop shows coming to town soon.

i am glad to see how many fans have called Left Brain out on Twitter, rather than joking about it.

many many x-posts, but:

I was making a larger point that maybe people stop giving them the time of day, stop hyping them, etc etc etc. Not necc aiming that a people here, but the attitude of "oh this happens all time, won't faze them a bit" make me frustrated and wish that people in general would be a little more vocally opposed to this. The shrugging of shoulders itt is symptomatic of people just not giving enough of a shit.

^^ this otm. during the original discussion of odd future & sexism, some people argued that the extreme imagery was cathartic & intentionally unsettling, and that there was a value to seeing that fictionalized, even if it wouldn't be appropriate in reality. now we're seeing violent and misogynistic behavior manifesting itself in reality from the same people. i don't see how someone can shrug their shoulders at this and discuss it on the same rhetorical level as "odd future's lyrics offend feminists." this was legit, outwardly focused violence that hasn't been apologized for or condemned by the rest of the group.

OFWGKTA needs a strong-willed character to step in and tell them "no, now sit in the corner and shut the fuck up" every so often....

preferably one played by Morgan Freeman

i wouldn't stop listening to someone whose music i truly enjoyed if they were a nazi, although as difficult listening hour and i agreed earlier, "being a nazi is not a good recipe for being a good artist" ("they were good at architecture"). but i wouldn't monetarily support them i don't think. i mean, it would be a true guilty pleasure, not the pussy-ass "oh i hate how that foster the people song gets stuck in my head and i sometimes sing along" kind.

i don't feel like i've ever really been tested because i've never heard truly great music by someone who offends me enough. tyler doesn't threaten me because has it ever been more obvious a rapper is not acting on anything he says

i was hoping to make it to the end of just this year with that stance before jumping ship though: http://pitchfork.com/news/44467-odd-futures-left-brain-accused-of-hitting-photographer-in-the-face/

""There simply is no truth to the accusation floating around the internet. Its no secret that Odd Future has a love/hate relationship with photographers at shows simply because sometimes they are given access the group wishes their fans would have instead. After telling the photographers to clear out multiple times (as they've done before) Vyron (Leftbrain) took a swipe at a few cameras, NOT people. To manipulate the situation to insinuate an attack on a woman specifically is careless and manipulative.""

o well that changes everything guys *smh*

I love Goblin. and I'll still bump it. just have an issue w/ supporting these dudes in person now. besides...there will be better rap shows.

yea, so they can punch them out too

Neanderthal, Monday, 31 October 2011 21:29 (fourteen years ago)

i think these guys' music sucks but does anyone here know if he actually hit a woman, and to what degree does their music feed into this interpretation?

fwiw I think their music sucks partly because its about violence towards women (esp because its so lazily about that) & i have no problem with them getting unexpected blowback from that

im not convinced he was trying to hit a woman, though

The boyboy young jess (D-40), Monday, 31 October 2011 21:30 (fourteen years ago)

i mean obv its, play with fire, get burned, lol

The boyboy young jess (D-40), Monday, 31 October 2011 21:31 (fourteen years ago)

to be honest, I'd find the act of him taking swings at the press to be reprehensible enough.

xxpost I don't think he premeditated "Ima find a hoe to slap", but if the account is true, he sure as hell didn't pull up before recognizing what he was doing...

Neanderthal, Monday, 31 October 2011 21:32 (fourteen years ago)

that too. i mean, i think its completely believable that he was legit just taking swings at cameras, and maybe she exaggerated it, or maybe it was an accident & it really did happen, but the fact is if their music wasnt reprehensible sometimes if there WAS a misunderstanding, no one would have leapt to that conclusion

all you dudes talking about selling your tickets are lol
