When I first bought this album (and was mystified and/or bored by it), the only thing that really made an impression back then was Vitamin C. So I'm going for that one. It would be some years later before I would dig the CD out of my stacks and have a major "A-ha!" moment about Can.

Pavement had the worst covers ever. P much put me off them completely.

skeevy wonder (Drugs A. Money), Tuesday, 16 October 2012 18:29 (thirteen years ago)

"Grounded" is gorgeous but seems a little too steady in its narrative flow to "sum up" Pavement. "We Dance" ("Pick out some Brazilian nuts for your engagement / Check that expiration date, maaan / It's later than you think") or "Stereo" ("Pigs they tend to wiggle when they walk / Their infrastructure rots / And the owners hate the jocks / With their agents and their dates...") might do the trick. Musically, the guitar outro of "Stop Breathing" sums the band up -- it liberally "samples" a Can song! There ya go.

Jody, which Can song does "Stop Breathin'" rip off? I've noticed that there's definitely subtle references to Can here and there, but I never noticed anything blatant.

malkmus has said as much re. "stop breathin", but i dont think it's mean to mimic any particular song. the end sounds a lot like the guitar work on monster movie.

ha, i will be the lone dissenting voice -- this sounds like fun.
when i saw malkmus earlier this year, he inserted the mother sky riff into some long jam and it was great.

Is there any way Can can stop him doing this?

Hello, Good Evening and Expenses (Tom D.), Wednesday, 17 October 2012 15:44 (thirteen years ago)

... I don't mean inserting the mother sky riff into some long jam

Hello, Good Evening and Expenses (Tom D.), Wednesday, 17 October 2012 15:45 (thirteen years ago)

I'm pretty sure Can is all about it...I first heard the news from their Facebook page.

Too easily flattered, these elderly German gentlemen

Hello, Good Evening and Expenses (Tom D.), Wednesday, 17 October 2012 15:51 (thirteen years ago)

If it's a bait and switch and they get someone like Eye from the Boredoms to do the vocals that would help.

Ned Raggett, Wednesday, 17 October 2012 15:56 (thirteen years ago)

They should do what Queen did and create their own officially licensed tribute band.

cwkiii, Wednesday, 17 October 2012 15:58 (thirteen years ago)

Slanted and Descanted: Stephen Malkmus covers Carcass's Necroticism in its entirety

Clarke B., Thursday, 18 October 2012 13:14 (thirteen years ago)

Can are one of those rare bands where the chemistry was so right with the original players, and they music they produced was so unique, that trying to cover their songs at all just seems like a really bad idea to me.

I can take Malkmus or leave him but he wouldn't even be in the top 100 musicians I'd want to see take a run at Ege Bamyasi...

bizarro gazzara, Thursday, 18 October 2012 14:51 (thirteen years ago)

^^^

There are a lot of covers of ELP that make me feel this way too. When a band is like 90% technique and 10% songwriting, maybe don't try to cover them?

I can see covers of their shorter songs going well but even then I can't imagine another group trying on "Vitamin C", much less something like "One More Saturday Night"

frogbs, Thursday, 18 October 2012 14:55 (thirteen years ago)

but seriously, can we stress just how great this album is. like a top 20 album for me.

frogbs, Thursday, 18 October 2012 14:55 (thirteen years ago)

Or Pinch.xp

Trip Maker, Thursday, 18 October 2012 14:56 (thirteen years ago)

F'reals. There's something about him covering the whole ALBUM that really rubs wrong, too. If it were just one song, "Sing Swan Song" or "Spoon" or something, no prob, fine, great!

Clarke B., Thursday, 18 October 2012 14:57 (thirteen years ago)

I've just remembered that Loop's cover of "Mother Sky" is actually great. Er, exception which proves the rule?

bizarro gazzara, Thursday, 18 October 2012 15:36 (thirteen years ago)

the Loop cover is probably the best cover, but it also does a poor job of recreating the bassline which to me is pretty much the heart of "Mother Sky"

So, there's this Vitamin C ripoff by 24 Carat Black (released 1973, one year after ege bamyasi). It's very obvious lifted one another but the prospect of an Ohio soul collective hunkering down to listen to Ege Bamyasi is a pretty incredible thought.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-gELkzDK0Ls

Moka, Friday, 11 October 2013 03:35 (twelve years ago)

It is very similar but I'm sure it's a coincidence, it's not a wildly unconventional bassline, it's the sort of thing you could imagine someone else coming up with.

Tommy McTommy (Tom D.), Friday, 11 October 2013 12:30 (twelve years ago)

I have googled this question before and never found any evidence of the rhythm section of 24 cb digging can. I think it is just a coincidence and even if they did appropriate it, it doesn't detract from what a great tune it is.

this album invented weed

ivy., Tuesday, 2 June 2026 20:03 (one week ago)

first few times I smoked weed I was like "this is nice but I don't see what the big deal is", then I put on "Mother Sky" and was physically unable to stop headbanging, like I was a man possessed, suddenly I was like "ahh ok I get it now" (referring to weed but also Can in general)
