it's only annoying cuz tyler's so aggressively EMO about it, not only using life-pain as explanation/justification for his transgressions, but treating it as an interesting end in itself. though i think goblin pays off, i don't find tyler's (post) teen angst half as compelling as he seems to.
agree w/ lilsoul on the perils of "plodding", but it's hard to resist critiquing the album that way now that the idea's out there. "goblin" (the title track) is both a mission statement and a dare in that regard, dragging out a fairly simple idea & soundscape so that you get some time to settle in with the aesthetic. bored me at first, but i've come to like it. "yonkers" and "radicals" keep the energy up through what i think of as Side One. great opening.
Side Two, in my mind, runs from "she" through "tron cat", and again, it works well, balancing downtempo beats with melodic hooks ("she"), crass jokes and dense, skillful rapping (especially on "nightmare" and "tron cat"). "nightmare" strikes me as the album's centerpiece, placing horror's emphasis not on cartoonish transgressions, but on a realistically pitched, if overwrought, self portrait. hard not to be reminded here of kanye's MBDTF, both in the relentless focus on an inner landscape, and in the use of that landscape to cynically beg indulgence for misbehavior.
Side Three begins to bottom out a bit, not terribly, but the run from "her" through "analog" is salvaged mostly by "sandwiches" (an album standout). "her" isn't bad, though it retreads "she" less successfully (no frank ocean hook).
and i hit a wall in the closing stretch. "bitch suck dick", though the joke is plainly obvious, just about did me in the first time through. finally found all the cartoon misogyny simply misogynist and gross and unfunny at that. it left a bad taste, is what i mean, and in its wake, 8 fucking minutes of molasses-paced "window" lost me. after living with the album for a few days, though, i've come to terms. i mean, i can't claim i'm not here, in part, for straight-up "shock value." i am. and if you're in it for the shocks, how can you claim to be offended by such trivial provocations? i caught feelings, lol.
in its defense, "bitch suck dick" brings some hi-energy chaos to what would otherwise be an unbroken, late-album slog, and it's clear that what i'm calling Side Four is intended as a conceptual summary statement, like side four of the wall, where the narrator's madness finally overtakes him completely and reality crumbles. you get the unbridled psychotic id on "bitch suck dick", an intervention collapsing into mass murder in "window", a comically out-to-lunch musical interlude ("AU79", like a brain set to an dead channel), and a final "tear down the wall" exclamation point in "golden". not sure it was all necessary, but the narrative carries me through where the music wanders, a happy fate for any concept album.
taken as songs, there are probably only about 8 tracks here that completely work for me, but taken as an album (and that's clearly the intent), it all pretty much works. i like it.

started off there referring to this (as "it"):
rapping about hating fame when you're barely famous/not famous is as a part of rap as at this point as beats, so it really doesn't bother me even tho it is pretty stupid

Another Guardian / Observer piece on Tyler today. The suggestion that nobody has heard Goblin yet's a strange one. It's interesting that neither of the articles were written by the paper's more regular hip-hop contributors.

if only tyler would realize how smart he is!!
Odd Future's defenders argue that they're mocking white hipster expectations of black culture, or satirising rather than perpetuating hip-hop's ugliest recesses.
has anyone said this? because if they have, i've missed it

"As slogans go, "Kill people burn shit fuck school" doesn't exactly have the political freight of "fight the power", but Odd Future do, nonetheless, deserve to be spoken of in the same breath as Public Enemy"

It really didn't bother me, but just confusing considering how he wavers between "I want to have creative control and fuck the mainstream" and "I want to win Grammy's and MTV Awards." It's like dude make up your mind on what you want to do because the way the music climate is it's almost impossible to hold on to both ideals.

Yes I know the whole paradox thing is part of Tyler's shtick. I'm just saying the paradox thing can get grating.

jsmooth995:
A brief summary of the lyrical themes explored on Tyler the Creator’s “Goblin”:
* 1. Feeling emo makes me want to be provocative.
* 2. Why are people provoked whenever I say something provocative? This is so unfair and makes me feel emo.
* 3. Repeat step one.
