beth yes, florence a very fucking firm NO

lex pretend, Wednesday, 9 March 2011 08:42 (fifteen years ago)

the gossip's cover of "careless whisper" was great, agree that the "are you that somebody" one was risible

lex pretend, Wednesday, 9 March 2011 08:43 (fifteen years ago)

I know that supposedly Beth Ditto has this "personality" and is a known singer and whatever, but I could have got into that video so much more if they'd substituted her face with a model's a la Black Box.

I do quite like the song, I just wish she was a bit more anonymous. It reminds me a lot, for some reason, of Billie Ray Martin's "Your Loving Arms", although I really can't find a reason why. How long before this 90s comeback starts to manifest itself in the pop music of today's superstars?

o0o00h really? (boxedjoy), Wednesday, 9 March 2011 11:11 (fifteen years ago)

beth ditto ep is surprisingly good!

How long before this 90s comeback starts to manifest itself in the pop music of today's superstars?

80s revivalism took about 8 years to crest so don't hold yr breath.

ok i finally heard the Jessie J song on the radio yesterday, was expecting something Ke$ha-level obnoxious but it was like bland mid-'00s Natasha Bedingfield/early Nelly Furtado type ish, don't really understand the outrage.

JaySeanLilWayne (some dude), Wednesday, 9 March 2011 13:51 (fifteen years ago)

yeah have you heard "do it like a dude" yet

lex pretend, Wednesday, 9 March 2011 14:32 (fifteen years ago)

i find "price tag" more obnoxious lyrically than sonically, i mean apart from her awful grating voice

lex pretend, Wednesday, 9 March 2011 14:32 (fifteen years ago)

also apologies to americans that you seem to be getting jessie j from us, not katy b

lex pretend, Wednesday, 9 March 2011 17:37 (fifteen years ago)

it's beyond "seem to be" at this point sadly

This! Genuinely sonically offensive is the awful 'Do It Like a Dude', weird gender role stuff a la early Katy Perry + obnoxious white girl patois hiphop a la Lonely Island. Price Tag is more "oh dear god another song about how music isn't about being commercial, it's about being *real* from someone who should KNOW better.

because (a) "real" vs. "commercial" rockism blah blah, (b) Jessie J is part of the very Dr Luke, pop songwriting, etc. machine that she's ostensibly railing against, (c) you are CHARGING MONEY for this song are you not? Answer: "I understand power to the people but everyone has to make a living. If you steal music I can't then give you more because I'm not proving to the label that I'm someone that's going to earn them money for them to keep me.", (d) it's not that great a song.

Odd Future Wolf Gang Kill The Radio Star (Alex in Montreal), Wednesday, 9 March 2011 20:13 (fifteen years ago)

ts: jessie j v.s juicy j

flopson, Wednesday, 9 March 2011 20:15 (fifteen years ago)

"price tag" is outright awful in its own right but you really have to know "do it like a dude" to fully understand the jessie j hate

little humma boy (J0rdan S.), Wednesday, 9 March 2011 20:18 (fifteen years ago)

Jessie J is the worst fucking thing

like, worse than Drake and Bieber

ancient, but very sexy (DJP), Wednesday, 9 March 2011 20:19 (fifteen years ago)

oh yeah, "Do It Like A Dude," I may have listened to it once when Fever was hyped about it? it's kinda lol, at least as a song people in other countries have to hear all the time that i can just hear on youtube and then forget about. afaic writing "Party In The U.S.A." is her greatest crime.

JaySeanLilWayne (some dude), Wednesday, 9 March 2011 20:25 (fifteen years ago)

ugh I thought I couldn't dislike her any more and yet here we are

ancient, but very sexy (DJP), Wednesday, 9 March 2011 20:26 (fifteen years ago)

I still like "Do it Like a Dude" and don't get (still) why it's so hateable, but everything else I've heard from her is blech.

Johnny Fever, Wednesday, 9 March 2011 20:27 (fifteen years ago)

white ppl doing non-white ppl accents is almost always grounds for dismissal imo

little humma boy (J0rdan S.), Wednesday, 9 March 2011 20:31 (fifteen years ago)

also white ppl sucking horribly and just being awful is almost grounds for dismissal

ancient, but very sexy (DJP), Wednesday, 9 March 2011 20:32 (fifteen years ago)

almost always

hate is making me more incoherent than usual

ancient, but very sexy (DJP), Wednesday, 9 March 2011 20:32 (fifteen years ago)

yes, but it's the fake patois (& the so obviously post-minaj bent of the video) that puts it over the top

writing a song for rihanna but then recording it yourself doesn't mean that you get to affect her accent

little humma boy (J0rdan S.), Wednesday, 9 March 2011 20:33 (fifteen years ago)

i think "Do It Like A Dude" is a perfectly good title/premise for a pop song but she didn't do it very well, maybe a dude could have done it better

JaySeanLilWayne (some dude), Wednesday, 9 March 2011 20:34 (fifteen years ago)

omg just imagining drake doing it

lex pretend, Wednesday, 9 March 2011 20:35 (fifteen years ago)

like a dude

lex pretend, Wednesday, 9 March 2011 20:35 (fifteen years ago)

Hey, it's not like I'm not accustomed to having my likes be outliers around the rolling pop thread and I accept what you guys are saying and even half-agree with it, but I still think that song is tits.

Johnny Fever, Wednesday, 9 March 2011 20:35 (fifteen years ago)

also her bio trumpets that she's written for timberlake, aguilera, rihanna - been doing a bit of research and it seems all of these songs must never have been used as they don't show up on any databases. imagine the calibre of song that was CUT from xtina's bionic!

i guess we didn't realise at the time that "party in the usa" was written by two swedes and a brit?

lex pretend, Wednesday, 9 March 2011 20:36 (fifteen years ago)

i think "Do It Like A Dude" is a perfectly good title/premise for a pop song

johnny do you like katy b?

(and also dan, and also al if he deigns to listen to UK music that isn't being thrust on US radio)

i think the mysticism regarding this song fell apart when miley revealed that she'd never heard a jay-z song

little humma boy (J0rdan S.), Wednesday, 9 March 2011 20:38 (fifteen years ago)

"like a boy" is a million times better because ciara actually sings about real male/female roles in relationships and what's considered "acceptable" behaviour for men and women, while jessie j reduces it all to lame signifiers and gender essentialism

also "like a boy" doesn't sound like ass

lex pretend, Wednesday, 9 March 2011 20:39 (fifteen years ago)

"Do It Like A Dude" is a much funnier and more evocative phrase than the boring Ciara/Beyonce song titles (which also are a totally different premise)

JaySeanLilWayne (some dude), Wednesday, 9 March 2011 20:40 (fifteen years ago)

damn you guys are right--this is one terrible song

call all destroyer, Wednesday, 9 March 2011 20:41 (fifteen years ago)

so you really only care about the title of the song? xp

little humma boy (J0rdan S.), Wednesday, 9 March 2011 20:42 (fifteen years ago)

johnny do you like katy b?

I liked the song that was in the top 77 countdown, and the song with Magnetic Man, but what I've heard since I really have no strong feelings about.

Johnny Fever, Wednesday, 9 March 2011 20:42 (fifteen years ago)

I haven't heard Katy B yet but I am certain I would like her more than Jessie J

ancient, but very sexy (DJP), Wednesday, 9 March 2011 20:53 (fifteen years ago)

I am also certain I would like herpes more than Jessie J, eventually

no, i was just pointing out why posting a youtube of "Like A Boy" was completely irrelevant to what i was saying.

JaySeanLilWayne (some dude), Wednesday, 9 March 2011 20:55 (fifteen years ago)

dan: Katy B - On A Mission (4 April 2011) - hype, anticipation &c

lex pretend, Wednesday, 9 March 2011 20:57 (fifteen years ago)

okay that first track is fucking hot

ancient, but very sexy (DJP), Wednesday, 9 March 2011 20:58 (fifteen years ago)

okay now I am even angrier about Jessie J

ancient, but very sexy (DJP), Wednesday, 9 March 2011 21:11 (fifteen years ago)

lupe's going #1

swag the dog (J0rdan S.), Friday, 11 March 2011 01:31 (fifteen years ago)

lol i didn't realize that horrific modest mouse single of his was produced by kane beatz -- that dude is such a fucking hack

J0rdan S., Friday, 11 March 2011 01:34 (fifteen years ago)

wow becoming the elder statesman of subkanye blog rappers and getting fans angry about your big mean label can actually help you move units, who knew?

some dude, Friday, 11 March 2011 01:35 (fifteen years ago)

the funny thing about this is that it's gonna force him to continue his career making awful major label indebted crap instead of nobly retiring or w/e his plan was

another dumptruck full of money pulls up to skylar grey's house

some dude, Friday, 11 March 2011 01:42 (fifteen years ago)

mike shinoda -- unemployed since september 2010 -- puts the truck in park

J0rdan S., Friday, 11 March 2011 01:44 (fifteen years ago)

that one went over my head

some dude, Friday, 11 March 2011 01:45 (fifteen years ago)

lol well i was making a joke about skylar grey transcending mike shinoda, as such he's driving the dump truck, but i forgot for a sec that he's in linkin park

J0rdan S., Friday, 11 March 2011 01:48 (fifteen years ago)
