Oh, I would like that, especially Magda! And it's the day after my birthday...
I've only been to The Mighty for Michael Mayer, liked the space, really hated the crowd.

admrl, Friday, 27 April 2007 19:39 (nineteen years ago)

Yeah, I'm looking forward to Magda more than Richie Hawtin too. Is the sound good at Mighty?

I just realised that in the space of 10 days, SF is going to play host to Magda, Richie Hawtin, Michael Mayer, Gui Boratto, Baby Ford and Zip!

Now all we need are more and better clubs...

Goethe*s Elective Affinities, Friday, 27 April 2007 19:56 (nineteen years ago)

More techno, more clubs, and better sound? You may be thinking of Europe.

Cameron Octigan, Friday, 27 April 2007 20:01 (nineteen years ago)

hehahahehehahahah

otm!

i'm sure most of that is as a result of those acts being on the continent for demf/mutek...

btw:

party is at 1236 Folsom.
i'm playing 12.30-2, disco/house/techno.

jaxon, Friday, 27 April 2007 21:54 (nineteen years ago)

put spaces between the @ sign and the other parts of the email address

jaxon, Friday, 27 April 2007 21:54 (nineteen years ago)

lisadenise.velasquez @ gmail.com

BATTAGS, Friday, 27 April 2007 22:02 (nineteen years ago)

nice one - that's who you email to get on the cheap list. geez! who knew posting a simple email address could be so confounding?

BATTAGS, Friday, 27 April 2007 22:03 (nineteen years ago)

"More techno, more clubs, and better sound? You may be thinking of Europe."

Yeah... I was kind of getting my hopes up there, wasn't I?

DEMF/Mutek or no, SF's got some great stuff to look forward to in the next couple of months...

Goethe*s Elective Affinities, Sunday, 29 April 2007 01:49 (nineteen years ago)

How was opening for James Murphy & Co, Cameron?

Goethe*s Elective Affinities, Wednesday, 2 May 2007 17:53 (nineteen years ago)

i think LCD was maybe the best show i've ever seen. but i was really fucking drunk, so i dunno. that yacht opening band wasn't really my bag. too schticky.

cameron, ask brian if he never leaves home w/o that Funkapolitan record ;)

jaxon, Wednesday, 2 May 2007 20:43 (nineteen years ago)

lcd were the coachella savers imho. them and soulwax. and bjork's armada of lemur jazzmutants and trumpet wielding vixens.

Goethe*s Elective Affinities, Wednesday, 2 May 2007 22:57 (nineteen years ago)

if i were in town, i'd be at Ame.

LCD were great, Yacht was the worst thing i've seen in years and years and years. I was embarrassed for him.

BATTAGS, Wednesday, 2 May 2007 23:01 (nineteen years ago)

morgan geist 5/12
alexander robotnik 5/18

both @ rx

tricky, Thursday, 3 May 2007 00:30 (nineteen years ago)

btw if any of yalls have a solid grasp of rock music and even a little music retail experience, amoeba sf is looking for Rock section Floor People, three of them. apply instore.

BATTAGS, Thursday, 3 May 2007 00:35 (nineteen years ago)

Anyone go to Morgan Geist on Friday, was meaning to go but completely forgot about it, what did he play?

oscar, Tuesday, 15 May 2007 23:45 (nineteen years ago)

i was at morgan geist. the crowd was pretty sparse, at like 11, there was still only like 25 people there. it picked up enough to not be super sad, i had a good time, but I lack the ability to recall or identify any of the tracks he played although i can say with certainty that two of them were italo tracks i have listened to a billion times, but whose names have eluded me since. The fratty dudes who followed my roommate there thought it was too disco-y, whatever . . .

It was my first time at Rx, does their shit get busier? I wanna see Robotnick on Friday but am reticent to go there again if it's gonna be a ghost town again, ya know?

methanietanner, Wednesday, 16 May 2007 00:07 (nineteen years ago)

Actually, I've been to RX 5 or 6 times and have had pretty much the same experience. Once, I had some friends come up from LA and Harvey was spinning so I figured it would be perfect. Well, the crowd got to around maybe 50 peeps. The music was great, people were nice, but yeah ghost town OTMFM. However, I heard the Kompakt shows have gone off so I figure its a matter of picking em.

oscar, Wednesday, 16 May 2007 00:15 (nineteen years ago)

Wow!! I just noticed this:

Saturday, May 19, 2007
Event: Mobilee Records Showcase
Venue: underground location
DJs: Exercise One, Pan-Pot, GummiHz, Jason Short, Tim McCormack, Dima
Music: tech house, minimal techno
Cover: $12 presale
http://www.auralismrecords.com/

As far as I can tell, there's been zero promotion. I really hope there's a good crowd...

Goethe*s Elective Affinities, Wednesday, 16 May 2007 00:41 (nineteen years ago)

Ooh, that's gonna be hot!

saudade, Wednesday, 16 May 2007 03:34 (nineteen years ago)

hi. i don't live there but daniel wang thursday june 7th, presented by gun club so look out for info from them around town ...

jaime, Wednesday, 16 May 2007 04:02 (nineteen years ago)

"Ooh, that's gonna be hot!"

Yes, I think so too. Unfortunately, the Bjork show is that night -- I suspect many of the people who'd go to the Mobilee show will be there instead.

Somewhat ambitiously, I'm going to try for both...

Goethe*s Elective Affinities, Wednesday, 16 May 2007 18:40 (nineteen years ago)

tonight is second show of "double header" w/blevin & kevin blechdom @ the lab. come out!

Dominique, Wednesday, 16 May 2007 21:00 (nineteen years ago)

"Somewhat ambitiously, I'm going to try for both..."

You can do it! Bjork seems like the perfect lead-in to a bit of the Gomma Elastica magic with some Pan-Pot on top.

saudade, Wednesday, 16 May 2007 21:52 (nineteen years ago)

Yes... Sunday afternoon is going to be rather painful, but I couldn't agree more.

Goethe*s Elective Affinities, Friday, 18 May 2007 01:08 (nineteen years ago)

got a mailer for the SF Jazz fest. looks fucking epic. ornette coleman, pharoah sanders, john mclaughlin (have no idea what his current stuff is like, if it's too new agey?), caetano veloso, dee dee bridgewater.

jaxon, Friday, 18 May 2007 02:45 (nineteen years ago)

I saw Sanders at Grace last year or so and I think that sealed it for being my last trip to Grace to hear music. Everything sounds awful there. It's just mud and echoes.

libcrypt, Friday, 18 May 2007 03:46 (nineteen years ago)

aw nutz, because that's where he is again this year

jaxon, Friday, 18 May 2007 03:53 (nineteen years ago)

Anything exceptional on my 5/31-6/4 stay, let me know. (Rockist bias here.)

Yeah, I'm looking forward to Magda more than Richie Hawtin too. Is the sound good at Mighty?

Hell yes the sound is good at Mighty, in an oldschool way - it's the 177 Townsend sound system (Universe - remember that joint!?), the 4-corner 10-foot tall towers now covered with graf pieces. It ain't clean and crystalline and conversational like the 1015 system, but it hits just right and resonates with the warmth of a nice old record, as long as some man-breaks DJ isn't pushing the levels higher than his testosterone level. Michael Mayer rocked that system a year or two ago, till 5 in the AM, it was just lovely.

DJ Logan5, Friday, 18 May 2007 23:00 (nineteen years ago)

kyle, did you switch yr user name? and i heard you draw those flyers. they're pretty rad.

jaxon, Friday, 18 May 2007 23:16 (nineteen years ago)

you're thinking of josh (who is in SoRockets)....I can't draw shit

Has anyone been to Fat City, formerly Studio Z, next to the Paradise Lounge? they are booking crap in there now but the space is allegedly big and the soundsystem has apparently been upgraded. They just need to start booking things people would want to see.

akm, Friday, 18 May 2007 23:36 (nineteen years ago)

The location has always been excellent, but it's a BIG cavernous box and few promoters are ever really able to fill the space - bigger acts are better at a more well-known venue with better amenities, and smaller acts are, well, smaller. I hope they spent the bucks to not just put in a big sound system but to actually make the place feel more inviting, smaller, and work on the acoustics.

DJ Logan5, Saturday, 19 May 2007 00:07 (nineteen years ago)

has anyone heard about Pole/Kode 9/Badawi at RML? it's next week!

BATTAGS, Saturday, 19 May 2007 03:07 (nineteen years ago)

?!?! WHAT? Wait were is RML?

Alex in SF, Saturday, 19 May 2007 04:23 (nineteen years ago)

I've never heard of this place. . .

Alex in SF, Saturday, 19 May 2007 04:29 (nineteen years ago)

http://www.sensory-perception.net/pole/
http://www.sensory-perception.net/kode9/
RML (Recombinant Media Labs)is in SOMA...they had tomas fehlmann, speedy j, deadbeat...but i'm pretty sure this show is at their old digs near hunters point.

BATTAGS, Saturday, 19 May 2007 04:32 (nineteen years ago)

Okay I've been to the Hunter's Point digs (saw Deadbeat and and and somewhere not memorable. . . Fehlmann. . . no. . . eh either way.) That Hunter's Point location is a bitch to get to. Still Badawi and Kode-9 sounds nice.

Alex in SF, Saturday, 19 May 2007 04:34 (nineteen years ago)

Monolake?

Alex in SF, Saturday, 19 May 2007 04:39 (nineteen years ago)

man, i hope people come out to that mobilee show! i'll be there.

pshrbrn, Saturday, 19 May 2007 06:17 (nineteen years ago)

I just got a free ticket to the Bjork show so I will be there. :)

Alex in SF, Saturday, 19 May 2007 07:11 (nineteen years ago)

I've been to the address of the Mobilee show before, I think for a Legowelt / Orgue Electronique show? Anyway, Mobilee is a label I'm particularly enjoying right now, especially the GummiHz stuff... the sound design is so exacting, and it really sucks the air out of the room at volume. Submit a review, anyone who goes?
(also interested to hear if Bjork is continuing to use that visual/physical interaction instrument that was part of her show at Coachella).

DJ Logan5, Sunday, 20 May 2007 02:03 (nineteen years ago)

So, I was leaving town a little over a week ago and looked over to see Kenny Larkin checking in to my hotel! My timing sucks.

mh, Sunday, 20 May 2007 05:33 (nineteen years ago)

Thanks for letting us know about Pole and Kode 9, BATTAGS! Very, very cool.

How was Mobilee last night? Traffic was awful getting back to SF and I didn't end up making it to the show...

Goethe*s Elective Affinities, Sunday, 20 May 2007 23:31 (nineteen years ago)

"also interested to hear if Bjork is continuing to use that visual/physical interaction instrument that was part of her show at Coachella."

Yes, Damian Taylor was fiddling with a Lemur and what (from a distance) resembled a Dance Dance Revolution floor pad, but turned out to be more like a cross between a crazy warlock's psychic apparatus and some navy sonar pulsing thing. It looked absurdly cool...

The show was very enjoyable. I do pity poor Chris Corsano whose virtuosic subtlety is somewhat wasted on the big Bjork spectacle...
