oh, definitely. the sound of the thing + its continually surprising make-up are precisely what I like about it. I don't find listening to it to be a chore at all.

If you are around today Adrien, just want to say that, as usual, your year-end wrap-up is making for some fantastic reading. The last couple albums have been really great choices.

Also, Phil is 100% right. As shocked as I am to be saying this, The Damned Things album is a really fun hard rock record.

Thanks! I've been too busy to post in the RMT thread lately. My #1 album is a real left-field non-metal choice, thematically a total opposite to Agalloch.
I found myself sort of liking the two leaked Damned Things songs, so it looks like I'll have to give the album a try (and maybe a write-up) before the end of the year.
Got lots of comments about 2011 albums, but that'll wait until the 2011 thread!
Oh, and Phil: funny.

Darkblack still have a dumb name and a crappy singer. My impressions from two-three years ago were correct. Pretty tasty classic metal riffs, though.

Has anybody else heard Hour of 13's The Ritualist? As retro-minded doom goes, I think I like it better than Ghost. The songs are pretty fucking catchy, in a Roky Erickson and the Aliens sort of way, especially "Demons All Around Me."
― that's not funny. (unperson), Thursday, 30 December 2010 14:42 (fifteen years ago)
yeah, I have. it's pretty good but I liked the s/t one from a few years ago a bit better. could just be the extra time I've spent with it, tho.
― original bgm, Thursday, 30 December 2010 17:36 (fifteen years ago)
Yeah, pretty good traditionalist doom. Didn't really do much to grab my ears outside of some decent tunes, though. I just love the harmonies and atmosphere of the Ghost record the more I listen to it.
― Moving Pixels (J3ff T.), Thursday, 30 December 2010 18:30 (fifteen years ago)
Yeah, the Hour of 13 album is terrific. Old fashioned doom that's not afraid to employ good melodic vocals.

Have you heard the new Cauldron, Adrien? I love it.
― that's not funny. (unperson), Thursday, 30 December 2010 19:04 (fifteen years ago)
I'm nuts about it. The cover of Halloween's "I Confess" is brilliant. And I had a blast talking to Jason about obscure Canadian 80s metal bands. They used Scorpions' Blackout as the template for this album, and they really pull it off, it's got more of a German metal feel than the NWOBHM comparison that people keep tossing out.
― A. Begrand, Thursday, 30 December 2010 19:12 (fifteen years ago)
Yeah, I can totally hear the Scorpions in "Frozen in Fire" and stuff like that.
― that's not funny. (unperson), Thursday, 30 December 2010 19:13 (fifteen years ago)
Plus I love how "Queen of Fire" has a total George Lynch rip-off riff and tosses in the line "under lock and key".
― A. Begrand, Thursday, 30 December 2010 19:17 (fifteen years ago)
does everyone else who's heard the Cauldron record hear 'Tears Have Come' as "tears of cum"? :/
― When I Pardew I See Rakes (DJ Mencap), Thursday, 30 December 2010 19:52 (fifteen years ago)
So I really, really love this one Shadow Theory song ("I Opened up My Eyes") that has some crazy awesome Jethro Tull flutecomment but then the rest of the album is decent but generic Dream Theater/Symphony X worship, which makes me sad.
― Moving Pixels (J3ff T.), Thursday, 30 December 2010 20:30 (fifteen years ago)
flute, not flute comment
I love the new track Cauldron is sharing on their myspace. Are they sharing any others elswhere?
― serenchwilen, Friday, 31 December 2010 00:11 (fifteen years ago)
I think that's the only one so far. It's a good indicator of how the entire album is, though.

Several folks talking about the Cauldron record, so yes.
― EZ Snappin, Friday, 31 December 2010 18:48 (fifteen years ago)
I have a few 2011 releases already: the new Cauldron, the new Destruction, the new Full Blown Chaos, the new Motörhead, and a double disc by some black metal band called Helrunar.
― that's not funny. (unperson), Friday, 31 December 2010 19:00 (fifteen years ago)
how is the Motörhead?
― Shakey Moe Szyslak (Algerian Goalkeeper), Friday, 31 December 2010 19:08 (fifteen years ago)
New Motorhead's as solid as ever.
Cauldron and Ken Mode are the best 2011s I've heard so far, but there are some biggies I'm hoping to hear next week.
Oh, and Graf Orlock's Doombox is great fun too.
― A. Begrand, Friday, 31 December 2010 19:31 (fifteen years ago)
I like Ken Mode. Not familiar with Cauldron at all.

hi metal dudes did any of u hear this album out last year and/or dig it? my drummer showed it to me today and i loved it! not the type of thing i consider my thing at all, i guess it's like... power metal? kinda proggy? rly have no idea how to talk abt this, but it's like, relentless, epic, ongoing soloing (exclusively in triplets), really energetic, kinda posi. gave me a bit of a 70's psych vibe, too
