Yeah, obviously. But what was the lead-up. I never saw it. I'm def not up on my country as much as I should be. But it's not like MF Doom or anything where there was like three years of indie people doing one page features and Q&As, this is like full indiecrossover right away afaik?

might be the fact that he made a double CD that made people realize he was an Artist and not the new Keith Urban or something

Well, to be fair, so does Miranda Lambert.
what was the lead-up. I never saw it.

Well, yeah -- Lots of talk about that on the album's thread. The marketing and packaging deserve an award themselves. Seems like the positive critical response the previous album got convinced Johnson and/or Mercury Records to present the new one as an Important Conceptual Work Of Art, like no Nashville country album ever before. And it worked. Three-LP vinyl version is real gorgeous.

xp! Nah (to Scott, about the album he posted), but actually, I just remembered that Vince Gill (who is boring) put out a quaduple CD four years ago -- very big deal at the Grammys, obviously. And the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band's two Will The Circle Be Unbroken doubles fit in here, too. And maybe Red Headed Stranger. Probably other outlaw stuff too -- Jamey Johnson divides is into a Black Album and a White Album; David Allan Coe had a Happy Side and a Su-i-Side. So it's not like the Johnson thing is that unprecedented, I guess. Just don't think rock critics have ever fallen in line to this extent.
― xhuxk, Wednesday, 8 December 2010 20:44 (thirteen years ago) link
the jon caramanica piece was really good! and compelling. i can see people - critics - wanting to check out the album after that ran.
― scott seward, Wednesday, 8 December 2010 20:48 (thirteen years ago) link
Hey, so was my piece! Thing is, another huge part of Jamey Johnson's packaging to Serious Music Listeners is how he looks, not just how his album looks. (And I like him, a lot! But there's a ton of schtick involved.)

The complaints about lists are about as interesting as listening to gripes about the weather. Isn't anyone excited about new finds from some of the better lists? I'm enjoying LoneLady, Motorpsycho, Teeth Of The Sea, Anika, Årabrot and much more. Glad to see The Soft Pack finally appear on a list. Still at large - Julie Christmas - The Bad Wife.
Looking forward next week to The Wire, Treblezine and Resident Advisor. Then I'll be finishing up my own.

OTM. It's not like there's anything even remotely surprising about most of these lists but I seriously doubt ppl are devoting as much energy to listening to some of the unknown quantities than they are to the most rote of whining about Arcade Fire/Kanye/Deerhunter.

Brooks as Chris Gaines looks a lot like Ben Stiller as Zoolander.
I don't ever expect there NOT to be complaints about lists. Like weather small-talk, it's expected and comforting in a mildly annoying way. It's just that I'd expect this group to be a bit more excited about new discoveries/revelations/faves.

another no-placer on any of lists is nina nastasia's record, which i have a very hard time believing isn't better than most of what's on most of them. but of course i usually feel that way about her albums. i guess tomorrow's hipster cult artists have to come from somewhere.

In retrospect, after seeing more and more of these lists, the more I'm liking Drowned In Sound's. I mean, at least this:
1) Emeralds Does It Look Like I’m Here?2) The National High Violet3) Deftones Diamond Eyes4) Perfume Genius Learning
is a pretty interesting top 4, comparatively, even with the way too high National placement.
