ILM Metal/other 'metal' subgenres 2010 POLL NOMINATIONS THREAD CLOSES Saturday 19 December - All are welcome.

Everyone has the right to veto. Nominate all you want that you think fits the parameters. If something doesn't, JJ & I can veto it or you can ask for it to be vetoed too (just like previous polls). Henry has no veto... (ask jj why)

Should an album be left off nominations, you can ask on this or the voting thread if you can include it on your ballot. As long as it meets the parameters , it will be ok.

Shall start the noms off with the albums from Decibel & Rock-A-Rolla's lists. Feel free to veto anything not suitable (will remove the Emeralds/OPN stuff obv)

p.s. Do we allow Swans? (I love swans and think the albums great) But there runs the risk of non metalheads voting swans #1 just because that's the big ILM band they're all familiar with, and i don't want to deal with all the "they're not metal" bullshit in the countdown if they win. The same reason sonic youth etc are never allowed.
But it's up to you guys.

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Wednesday, 8 December 2010 21:34 (thirteen years ago) link

Swans are top 5 for me, if that makes any difference.

Anyway:

Cathedral - The Guessing Game
Murmuure - Murmuure

progspeed you! black metallers (aldo), Wednesday, 8 December 2010 21:39 (thirteen years ago) link

Swans was never metal. As much as I love the album.

A. Begrand, Wednesday, 8 December 2010 21:48 (thirteen years ago) link

Swans would be allowable if it was 1986, at least to my ear. What they're doing now may well be glorious, but metal it ain't.

that's not funny. (unperson), Wednesday, 8 December 2010 21:48 (thirteen years ago) link

Nominate:

Bison B.C. - Dark Ages
Zoroaster - Matador
Sweet Cobra - Mercy
The Sword - Warp Riders

Lair of the Minotaur - Evil Power

one pretty obvious guy in the obvious (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Wednesday, 8 December 2010 21:52 (thirteen years ago) link

It does run the risk of the corny indie fuxor vote.
xp

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Wednesday, 8 December 2010 21:53 (thirteen years ago) link

I'm guessing that High Confessions record doesn't count?

one pretty obvious guy in the obvious (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Wednesday, 8 December 2010 21:53 (thirteen years ago) link

was that the album the sonic youth guys made with some others?

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Wednesday, 8 December 2010 21:54 (thirteen years ago) link

as much as I love Swans and like that album, I kinda think I'm inclined to agree with adrien & phil on the veto.

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Wednesday, 8 December 2010 21:55 (thirteen years ago) link

Yeah, with Chris Connelly and Sanford Parker.

one pretty obvious guy in the obvious (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Wednesday, 8 December 2010 21:56 (thirteen years ago) link

Not heard it yet actually so i cant comment on it at all.

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Wednesday, 8 December 2010 21:58 (thirteen years ago) link

Got to veto the Mike Patton - it's Italian pop songs.

Why?

EZ Snappin, Wednesday, 8 December 2010 22:06 (thirteen years ago) link

nominating Death Angel - Relentless Retribution

As much as I love the High Confessions record - it's more industrial/avant garde than metal ...

BlackIronPrison, Wednesday, 8 December 2010 22:09 (thirteen years ago) link

We've never allowed comps in the metal poll.

We've never allowed comps in the metal poll.

That is not an explanation. Why? What's the problem - I understand not allowing hits compilations, but why not various artists?

Swans would be allowable if it was 1986, at least to my ear.

I love this album, but this is so not metal.

feel like it would be pretty lame if people nominated a bunch of label samplers or something... what V/A comps did people want to actualy rep for?

Princess BigSam (DJ Mencap), Wednesday, 8 December 2010 22:30 (thirteen years ago) link

we've had Zombi in years past.

Moving Pixels (J3ff T.), Wednesday, 8 December 2010 22:31 (thirteen years ago) link

Yeah, but just because the dude from Zombi plays on it doesn't make it metal.

I guess with Swans vetoed I cant allow it then.

i don't really think swans should be veto'd, it's not metal but it IS heavy and it IS rock -- and the thread says "Metal/Heavy Rock"

i genuinely thought when i first joined that he was the admin (ilxor), Wednesday, 8 December 2010 23:07 (thirteen years ago) link

they were vetoed

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Wednesday, 8 December 2010 23:15 (thirteen years ago) link

so-- is this also a Heavy Rock poll, or not?

if Swans are not heavy rock, i'm not really sure what is... and if heavy rock isn't included, i'd suggest you get a mod to remove it from the thread title

i genuinely thought when i first joined that he was the admin (ilxor), Wednesday, 8 December 2010 23:17 (thirteen years ago) link

and if heavy rock isn't included, i'd suggest you get a mod to remove it me from the thread title

― i genuinely thought when i first joined that he was the admin (ilxor),

remember a mod is co running this!

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Wednesday, 8 December 2010 23:19 (thirteen years ago) link

didn't answer my question... heavy rock included, yes/no?

i genuinely thought when i first joined that he was the admin (ilxor), Wednesday, 8 December 2010 23:22 (thirteen years ago) link

So glad this is off to a trouble-free start!

Lightning Is For Babies (Johnny Fever), Wednesday, 8 December 2010 23:26 (thirteen years ago) link

confusion in the poll title/description doesn't help :/

is it heavy rock? if yes, swans!

not really trying to cause trouble, but what's the point calling it a metal/heavy rock poll if we're gonna veto 2010's heaviest rock record?

i genuinely thought when i first joined that he was the admin (ilxor), Wednesday, 8 December 2010 23:28 (thirteen years ago) link

on the other hand-- if it's a heavy rock poll and we're vetoing swans because we're afraid some vampire weekend fan might bother to click on the metal poll thread, then submit a ballot with swans at #1, then this is just stupid

i genuinely thought when i first joined that he was the admin (ilxor), Wednesday, 8 December 2010 23:30 (thirteen years ago) link

Again, I kind of feel myself with ilxor here.

progspeed you! black metallers (aldo), Wednesday, 8 December 2010 23:30 (thirteen years ago) link

But there runs the risk of non metalheads voting swans #1 just because that's the big ILM band they're all familiar with

exactly the attitude i'm referring to ^^

come on guys

i genuinely thought when i first joined that he was the admin (ilxor), Wednesday, 8 December 2010 23:31 (thirteen years ago) link

Vote for anything your candy ass thinks is "heavy." I just said they're not metal.

that's not funny. (unperson), Wednesday, 8 December 2010 23:36 (thirteen years ago) link

i'd like to veto that nachtmystium album because it was reviewed well on pitchfork and also written about on stereogum and a lot of indie/"hipster" kids read stereogum. no fucking way is some false-metal stereogum reader gonna mess up MY poll results because THEY happen to like nachtmystium!!

i genuinely thought when i first joined that he was the admin (ilxor), Wednesday, 8 December 2010 23:37 (thirteen years ago) link

okay really though i'm going home, no more time for this

can we resolve this 4real?

i genuinely thought when i first joined that he was the admin (ilxor), Wednesday, 8 December 2010 23:38 (thirteen years ago) link

I want to agree with you again, you know. Swans played at Supersonic this year and and Roadburn next year. An argument could be made that says they're as metal as it gets.

Listening to this acid witch album, and the vocals are fucking stupid. They do not go with the music at all. And the vox are so far up in the mix to ignore them. Wish there was an instrumental mix of this cuz the musics good.

Shakey Moe Szyslak (Algerian Goalkeeper), Wednesday, 15 December 2010 20:16 (thirteen years ago) link

I want to nominate:

Petrychor - Dryad

It made me get into metal for the first time this year, and I ended up listening to a bunch of old Black Metal. I don't know how it holds up to the Canon of Black Metal or whatever, but I still listen to it at least once a month so it must be pretty good.

We missed anything?

Shakey Moe Szyslak (Algerian Goalkeeper), Thursday, 16 December 2010 13:12 (thirteen years ago) link

There's bound to be one person says they missed this thread! But if they do, and wish to vote for something not nominated, all they need to do is ask on the voting thread to see if it's suitable and it will likely be allowed.

Nope, viceroy or onimo i think usually does that kinda thing iirc

Shakey Moe Szyslak (Algerian Goalkeeper), Thursday, 16 December 2010 21:23 (thirteen years ago) link

Neil, I tried to load your playlist but it showed me a list of zero tracks (perhaps it only lists when you're onine?). And also I couldn't add to it! It might just be my wonky spotify that's messed up, but I started a second collaborative playlist anyway just incase anyone else had the same problems I did.

Hopefully everyone can see the albums on it so far and also be able to contribute! Ok, thanks!

xp to Viceroy- must have got my settings wrong! You're list works and has far more records on it anyway, so thanks!

Hopefully everyone can see the albums on it so far and also be able to contribute! Ok, thanks!

Listening to the Ghost album. Surely the wimpiest Satanic rock band ever? Having said that, I'm quite enjoying it! Tweak Bird are great- will certainly be listening to that one.

Can I add one more?

Hypnos 69 - Legacy

Add as much as you like if you think it's good enough for people to vote for

Shakey Moe Szyslak (Algerian Goalkeeper), Friday, 17 December 2010 16:45 (thirteen years ago) link

I'm not sure many others have heard it, or if their brand of prog-stoner stuff appeals to many people, but I love it and plan to vote for it.

well i know them, its stoner rock, so it counts for sure.

Shakey Moe Szyslak (Algerian Goalkeeper), Friday, 17 December 2010 17:00 (thirteen years ago) link

I'll be adding as much as I can onto the spotify playlist, and other spotify users should be able to put albums on as well. Not everything is on spotify, unfortunately, especially some of the bigger releases like the new Enslaved, and that Torche album...

So just beforewarned that not everything you can vote for is on spotify. Hopefully the playlist also only contains things you CAN vote for...

Enjoying the Wolf People record, classic psych rock stylings!

Neil S, Saturday, 18 December 2010 13:23 (thirteen years ago) link

More psych goodness: Quest for Fire (thankfully not the Dutch roots reggae band of the same name)

Neil S, Saturday, 18 December 2010 14:39 (thirteen years ago) link

Wolf People are fucking great. Quite a shame they have wolf in their name. They sound nothing like any of those other crappy wolf bands! I love the way the guy sings its classic 60s British folk rock, and then the music is all intense heavy prog-psych with lots of fuzz and distortion and amazing guitar work.

Wolfmangler are terrific

Shakey Moe Szyslak (Algerian Goalkeeper), Saturday, 18 December 2010 18:09 (thirteen years ago) link

oh no here comes Operation Wolfenstein when everybody mentions other bands that have wolf in their name and aren't terrible...

I've got nothing. Surely there must be a dozen or so OK albums we've collectively forgotten about though, happens every poll.
