Some friends of mine are in an underground indie rock band and have completed their first EP. It sounds very professional even if it was mixed on ProTools and recorded in a home studio.

Anywho, they came to me because they know I read a lot of mp3 blogs like ILM and Stereogum. I suggested that they send out music samples to all the major tastemakers, which they did -- but no response as of yet.

Then I found another intriguing option, for $25 they can be the band of the week on Scenestars, a fave mp3 blog of mine:
http://scenestars.net/bandspot/index.php

What do you think, is the exposure worth $25? I mean, they could just post their music on the YSI thread here for free.. Does anyone know how much traffic Scenestars gets or how many downloads they can expect in a week?

I think they should do it as Coldplay, Arctic Monkeys, and CYHSY are all prominently featured and they are looking to do a similar grassroots viral DIY thing to get label attention.

These Scenestar folks have a pretty high profile so some industry people must listen to what their flogging. Do you think journos will take us less seriously if it's a paid promotion? I have mixed feelings, free would be ideal, but they are not in a position to hire a PR person.

thx in advance,
W

why is this quotable? Was this the beginning of the "what a disaster" meme?

OK, I'll be honest. Basically I was watching out for her and would be looking out for her at certain times of the day. That's all. Actually, it was worse than that - there had been times when I'd deliberately try and bump into A and / or B at lunchtimes during the summer, but that wasn't picked up on at the time. Basically, I was stalking her in a little way, but not in any scary kind of way. Just trying to see her, that's all. I'm trying hard to justify myself without sounding like a nutcase here.

It's just that A noticed this behaviour and mentioned it to others there, who'd also noticed it, and then I presume it got passed upwards. I was told by the management that me watching her - and the other workers - was making them feel uncomfortable walking past my house, and that behaviour was stopped immediately.

Er, no, no boob grab. 8-)

Artist: JOHNNY GREENWOOD
Title: BODYSONG
Label: EMI
Year: 2003

'Jonny In Wonderland Among The Talking Flowers

Jonny Greenwood loves the moon. When he performs as a member of Radiohead, the notoriously soft-spoken guitarist has been known to take a moment at outdoor concerts to silently point out its splendor to the otherwise oblivious audience. The music he composes is like the moon---arcane, otherworldy, and peculiar. Bodysong is infused with the same sense of wide-eyed wonder at the sublime.

The album's opening track, "Moon Trills" seems portentous of some grand celestial event; its elongated Messiaen-inflected piano chords and Ondes-Martenot wails form and reform in a harmonic spectra that travels slowly toward a dark meridian. Later, the starlit melancholy of "Bode Radio / Glass Light / Broken Hearts" unfurls in vivid plumes of glass harmonica and strings, and is shot through with dissonant adornments not unlike those emblematic of Debussy. The drowsy fantasia of "Clockwork Tin Soldiers," reverberates like falling glass marbles aleatorically tinkling a ballet for mechanical dolls. "Convergence" begins with a clash and percolates into a percussive, clattering cacophony, fighting the hegemony of beauty and melody. The banjo-driven "24 Hour Charleston" echoes the adrenalin rush of a thief in the night, as dramatic electroacoustics envelop the discordant melody. And the monistic "Peartree" with its angular, Ligetian organ harmony resonates as though the music were dispersing in the higher vaults of a gothic cathedral. In "Milky Drops From Heaven," a hurried horn takes on an animal character, the music destructing and reconstructing itself from moment to moment, as if the jazz band were tumbling up and down invisible stairs, their tempo varying at the rate of their descent. On the closer, "Tehellet" (the Hebrew meaning of which roughly translates as "hope, expectation") a languid cello is made to sound like a choir of seraphim heralding an ascent.

Perhaps Jonny Greenwood is not one of the luminaries like Messiaen or Penderecki, but here, their light reflects upon him, like the sun upon the moon.'

The music he composes is like the moon - lifeless, pale and when you get up close it's basically a load of rock.

I've just went a searching across ILM and the only instance of anyone talking about "oriental hotties" is when a troll called "xx" started mouthing off about my (platonic) love of Shonen Knife and their music.
It was xx who made the racist/sexist comment about oriental women.
(xx was another one who loved to make accusations based on nothing but the paranoid delusions within his fevered brane.)
...as for the "uncle tom" comment, I'm doing another search right now.

Mark S on fire in this thread: mastermind, the game

MM1 was MM2's assistant, but bumped him off at the behest of GF1, and took over
MM3 is MM1's useless son obv, a classic "prince-in-waiting" roué dimwit, more interested in banging cocktail waitresses two at a time than Mastering the Game, let alone his mind: when MM1 vanished, GF1 had MM3 quietly garotted — by GF2, naturally.

GF2, MM1's octopussy-lucabrazz,i had never been his lover, stil less MM3's mom (whose death in penury in Eastern Europe in the mid-50s had pushed MM1 into this mode of life). Caring more about the Style of the Game than mere worldly loyalties or passions, GF2 was swiftly suborned when GF1 made appeal to the Aesthetics of Gangster Succession.

GF3/4 were models hired for the photograph.
