Can't stop listening to "After All." I want to make a cheesy pop movie and use it to play over a random ice-skating sequence.
― Eric H., Saturday, 24 January 2009 05:41 (seventeen years ago)
Can't really stop listening to all of High Crime, really.
I am listening to Al Jarreau right now. I'm named after him. I've always felt obligated to want nothing to do with him, especially as I was known as Jarreau for most of my life, before I started going by my first name. But whatever, I feel like I can make peace with dude now.
― punk floyd (The Reverend), Friday, 30 January 2009 02:16 (seventeen years ago)
Wow, truly interesting facts about a guy I know. I've always thought I should have at least those first couple of albums.

Ha, "After All" has leapt into 2nd place for most-played songs on iTunes, right after Kerri Chandler's "In the Morning."
― Nurse Detrius (Eric H.), Friday, 30 January 2009 02:54 (seventeen years ago)

i like the whole L is for Lovers album but when i hear this it sounds so similar to a lot of the synthpop i liked back then. i mean, the eurogliders could have had a hit with this song.

his wiki includes the sort of line that makes me swoon because it's got this weird hint of unknown history in it
After Jarreau's breakthrough in 1975 an almost unaccountable number of compilations of earlier recordings from 1965 to 1973 have emerged
dude had a master's degree in vocational rehab from U of Iowa & worked as a counselor before his ship came in! no wonder I love this guy!

I don't know how many times I've passed over buying We Got By in a record shop just because I liked the design of its sleeve. Now I'm finally listening to it (which is basically my first dedicated exposure to Jarreau) and "Lock All the Gates" is one of the most amazing songs I've heard in who knows how long. So excited there's about a zillion more albums to check out!

High Crime too.
He was so good. A real mid-life find for me, he made the sort of music I wouldn't have made time for in my youth -- pop jazz was something I heard a bit of when I was a kid because my dad, a pre-bop jazz man, was always trying to keep current and he liked vocal jazz. But it took me until my thirties to grab some Al Jarreau - he made wonderful records that I've listened to in several different corners of the world, and his music seemed tailor-made to make a day better. Like gentle sunlight, his music. Sad to hear that he is gone.

This. Few other musicians put me into this state of pure, uncomplicated, passive pleasure.

The first one, plus the live album that video is from.
― Ⓓⓡ. (Johnny Fever), Sunday, 12 February 2017 23:48 (nine years ago)
I'm not impressed by High Crime. I can barely hear him amid the syndrums and faux funk. The tunes just aren't very good.
― the Rain Man of nationalism. (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Monday, 13 February 2017 00:02 (nine years ago)
High Crime is his weakest 80s album imo.
