Okay, it's over. I'm safe. That was nice. Now I'm listening to a single by the Burmoe Brothers. I don't know who they are but the a-side has marc almond on it and the song itself would not be out of place on an Al Jarreau album. This single has one of my fave song titles: "Leber Oder Lippenstift (Liver Or Lipstick)". I wish i had a deniece williams album lying around.

about a year or two ago i was in a heavy MF DOOM phase and i too bought an al jarreau album (L is for Lovers from 86). it's got some really nice chord changes and cool keyboard sounds. even got a good amg review

at the same time i also bought an early 80s donald byrd record that has similar sounds. the guy at the record store probably thought i'd lost my mind.

i really like cheesey 80s soul.

I saw Al on the CBS saturday morning show last year....he was doing "real" jazz....he was scatting...it was really over the top be-do-be-bababa-dbab-dbe0boopity boo shit and it looked like he was having a fucking seizure or something....

"You Are My Starship" is an awesome tune. It's dreamy. I back in the day recommended that to amateurist once, on this thread --Recommend me stuff what sounds like Rose Royce's "Love Don't Live Here Anymore"

i always pass on n.connors records for some reason. i've got a couple of mp3s that i really like. i know he's produced a few really cool albums by artists i forget right now.

there's also a Jamaaladeen Tacuma version of Creator. i heard it in the store one time and it was kinda weird, smooth, but interesting.

I don't know how many times I've passed over buying We Got By in a record shop just because I liked the design of its sleeve. Now I'm finally listening to it (which is basically my first dedicated exposure to Jarreau) and "Lock All the Gates" is one of the most amazing songs I've heard in who knows how long. So excited there's about a zillion more albums to check out!

He was so good. A real mid-life find for me, he made the sort of music I wouldn't have made time for in my youth -- pop jazz was something I heard a bit of when I was a kid because my dad, a pre-bop jazz man, was always trying to keep current and he liked vocal jazz. But it took me until my thirties to grab some Al Jarreau - he made wonderful records that I've listened to in several different corners of the world, and his music seemed tailor-made to make a day better. Like gentle sunlight, his music. Sad to hear that he is gone.
