All Fly Home. Sounds great. It would take you hours and hours to reach my house and by then it would be too late.

I love Al Jarreau. When I was a kid I thought "Boogie Down" was some seriously heavy funk. I wore out my Jarreau cassette.

Stormy Davis (diamond), Wednesday, 9 March 2005 00:15 (twenty-one years ago)

Okay, it's over. I'm safe. That was nice. Now I'm listening to a single by the Burmoe Brothers. I don't know who they are but the a-side has marc almond on it and the song itself would not be out of place on an Al Jarreau album. This single has one of my fave song titles: "Leber Oder Lippenstift (Liver Or Lipstick)". I wish i had a deniece williams album lying around.

scott seward (scott seward), Wednesday, 9 March 2005 00:20 (twenty-one years ago)

wow, stormy, we really do have a lot in common. except for that whole 4AD thing. and you like sebadoh.

scott seward (scott seward), Wednesday, 9 March 2005 00:21 (twenty-one years ago)

about a year or two ago i was in a heavy MF DOOM phase and i too bought an al jarreau album (L is for Lovers from 86). it's got some really nice chord changes and cool keyboard sounds. even got a good amg review

at the same time i also bought an early 80s donald byrd record that has similar sounds. the guy at the record store probably thought i'd lost my mind.

i really like cheesey 80s soul.

i even started a thread that (once again) no one answered
Looking for MF Doom type Soul

MOONLIGHTING STRAAAAAAAAAAAAAANGERS
WHO'VE JUST MET ..... ON THE WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAYYY!

Pleasant Plains /// (Pleasant Plains ///), Wednesday, 9 March 2005 00:40 (twenty-one years ago)

on his 70's albums he really mixes up the jazz/funk/pop in a way that is quite unique. great arrangements.

scott seward (scott seward), Wednesday, 9 March 2005 00:43 (twenty-one years ago)

his version of "Blue Rondo a la Turk" is pretty awesome.

Stormy Davis (diamond), Wednesday, 9 March 2005 00:49 (twenty-one years ago)

I saw Al on the CBS saturday morning show last year....he was doing "real" jazz....he was scatting...it was really over the top be-do-be-bababa-dbab-dbe0boopity boo shit and it looked like he was having a fucking seizure or something....

But, Moonlighting theme is classik!

M@tt He1geson (Matt Helgeson), Wednesday, 9 March 2005 00:49 (twenty-one years ago)

jaxon, do yoo like norman connors rekkerds? i'm listening to You Are My Starship right now. he does a cover of "the creator has a master plan" on it.

scott seward (scott seward), Wednesday, 9 March 2005 00:51 (twenty-one years ago)

"You Are My Starship" is an awesome tune. It's dreamy. I back in the day recommended that to amateurist once, on this thread --Recommend me stuff what sounds like Rose Royce's "Love Don't Live Here Anymore"

Stormy Davis (diamond), Wednesday, 9 March 2005 00:55 (twenty-one years ago)

i always pass on n.connors records for some reason. i've got a couple of mp3s that i really like. i know he's produced a few really cool albums by artists i forget right now.

there's also a Jamaaladeen Tacuma version of Creator. i heard it in the store one time and it was kinda weird, smooth, but interesting.

xpost. haha. fuck. i was just looking for that thread you posted stormy

The JaXoN 5 (JasonD), Wednesday, 9 March 2005 00:59 (twenty-one years ago)

whoa! i didn't realize Leon Thomas actually sang on his version! wicked

The JaXoN 5 (JasonD), Wednesday, 9 March 2005 01:03 (twenty-one years ago)

i used to have the leon album AND the pharoah album with that tune on it. they are both great rekkerds.

scott seward (scott seward), Wednesday, 9 March 2005 01:09 (twenty-one years ago)

Kurt Elling did a nice version of Grover Washington Jr.'s "Winelight" on his last album. I just thought I'd pass that along.

Stormy Davis (diamond), Wednesday, 9 March 2005 01:10 (twenty-one years ago)

have you heard the Louis Armstrong version of creator? i hear that's an AMAZING album

The JaXoN 5 (JasonD), Wednesday, 9 March 2005 01:14 (twenty-one years ago)

Come on, All Fly Home is awesome.

ffirehorse (firehorse), Wednesday, 9 March 2005 01:37 (twenty-one years ago)

I love how he cusps his hands in front of the microphone while he's singing, as if to indicate that he's gifting the listener with something. It's not quite Jazz Hands, it's Jarreau Hands!

Can't stop listening to "After All." I want to make a cheesy pop movie and use it to play over a random ice-skating sequence.

Eric H., Saturday, 24 January 2009 05:41 (seventeen years ago)

Can't really stop listening to all of High Crime, really.

Eric H., Saturday, 24 January 2009 05:41 (seventeen years ago)

I am listening to Al Jarreau right now. I'm named after him. I've always felt obligated to want nothing to do with him, especially as I was known as Jarreau for most of my life, before I started going by my first name. But whatever, I feel like I can make peace with dude now.

punk floyd (The Reverend), Friday, 30 January 2009 02:16 (seventeen years ago)

Wow, truly interesting facts about a guy I know. I've always thought I should have at least those first couple of albums.

If Timi Yuro would be still alive, most other singers could shut up, Friday, 30 January 2009 02:43 (seventeen years ago)

Ha, "After All" has leapt into 2nd place for most-played songs on iTunes, right after Kerri Chandler's "In the Morning."

Nurse Detrius (Eric H.), Friday, 30 January 2009 02:54 (seventeen years ago)

ha, I'm sure I mentioned that to you at some point, Rick.

i like the whole L is for Lovers album but when i hear this it sounds so similar to a lot of the synthpop i liked back then. i mean, the eurogliders could have had a hit with this song.

hologram ned raggett (The Reverend), Tuesday, 1 May 2012 02:45 (fourteen years ago)

his wiki includes the sort of line that makes me swoon because it's got this weird hint of unknown history in it

After Jarreau's breakthrough in 1975 an almost unaccountable number of compilations of earlier recordings from 1965 to 1973 have emerged

dude had a master's degree in vocational rehab from U of Iowa & worked as a counselor before his ship came in! no wonder I love this guy!

two years pass...

I don't know how many times I've passed over buying We Got By in a record shop just because I liked the design of its sleeve. Now I'm finally listening to it (which is basically my first dedicated exposure to Jarreau) and "Lock All the Gates" is one of the most amazing songs I've heard in who knows how long. So excited there's about a zillion more albums to check out!

High Crime too.

the Rain Man of nationalism. (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Sunday, 12 February 2017 18:53 (nine years ago)

He was so good. A real mid-life find for me, he made the sort of music I wouldn't have made time for in my youth -- pop jazz was something I heard a bit of when I was a kid because my dad, a pre-bop jazz man, was always trying to keep current and he liked vocal jazz. But it took me until my thirties to grab some Al Jarreau - he made wonderful records that I've listened to in several different corners of the world, and his music seemed tailor-made to make a day better. Like gentle sunlight, his music. Sad to hear that he is gone.

This. Few other musicians put me into this state of pure, uncomplicated, passive pleasure.

That clip with him performing Take 5 and some other acapella bits really is terrific

Camaraderie at Arms Length, Sunday, 12 February 2017 23:10 (nine years ago)

Is there an LP of his that's in this style?

Camaraderie at Arms Length, Sunday, 12 February 2017 23:12 (nine years ago)

The first one, plus the live album that video is from.

Ⓓⓡ. (Johnny Fever), Sunday, 12 February 2017 23:48 (nine years ago)

I'm not impressed by High Crime. I can barely hear him amid the syndrums and faux funk. The tunes just aren't very good.

the Rain Man of nationalism. (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Monday, 13 February 2017 00:02 (nine years ago)

High Crime is his weakest 80s album imo.
