in the olden days -- aka my youth -- people were excited and bothered by it, and believed that it was inhabited by tribes of pirate scavengers who walked around on stilts with big wooden "feet", preying on the ships that got tangled

It's where the eels go to spawn iirc, probably just a huge blob of eel gloop at certain times of the year.

^^^think this is probably the sargasso sea film i was thinking of on the other thread -- "worst directors", tho this no longer elevant

it's "the lost continent": apparently "ilse of lost ships" is a lost film, so i probably didn't even see it when young

there was a bbc programme on WED about the EARTH'S CORE -- not the film an actual documentary with scientists -- which located the MAGNETIC ANOMALY right below the BERMUDA TRIANGLE (mentioned) and thus the sargasso (not mentioned :( :( :( ...)

Have always mentally associated it with Rime of the Ancient Mariner, though I'm not sure if that's actually where Coleridge had in mind.

pretty sure sargasso sea = bermuda triangle? allow me to consult the all knowing oracle of wiki.

Puff Daddy, whoever the fuck you are. I am dissapoint. (Steve Shasta), Saturday, 3 September 2011 16:38 (twelve years ago) link

ok, i have learned that the bermuda triangle is the western subset of the sargasso sea.

Puff Daddy, whoever the fuck you are. I am dissapoint. (Steve Shasta), Saturday, 3 September 2011 16:41 (twelve years ago) link

but my theory would be that the sargasso and the bermuda ∆ legends are about the fear of sailing off the map into vanished nowhere: in the first you get becalmed/tangled in a zone beyond human ken and never make port, in the second you pass off the relevant radar and don't re-appear

radio and radar ensured the sargasso problem was minimised; all kinds of modern navigation devices, esp. GPS, make bermuda-type vanishing much less likely

luckily there are still FREAK WAVES and GIANT SQUIDS!!!!

xp yes the sargasso seems to vary quite a lot, the biggest versions are much larger than the BT: also plus the BT was def more about magnetic anomalies than scary seaweed, it engulfed aeroplanes!
