Daddy, daddy cool!

Madchen, Wednesday, 21 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Lupo is kind of bonkers, at least for a car ad.

mark s, Wednesday, 21 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

I quite like that headache pill advert...where the mother is dancing about in her undies.

james, Wednesday, 21 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

That Dandy Warhols cell phone ad almost makes up for how much I hate them and how much I wish we had ads of any decent note in this gawdforsaken marketing tundra.

Mr Noodles, Wednesday, 21 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

The Zest Soap one with the elevator armpit sniffing scene. The way the woman meekly yet lovingly says "hello" just makes it, baby. Do they have this ad anywhere else in the world?

Arthur, Wednesday, 21 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Johnny Vegas and his wool monkey cohort, since the monkey talks exactly like Sideshow Mel.

Al, Wednesday, 21 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

MONKEY!!!!! shurely the only way to get people to switch to digital, stuff the acres of football, 7 zillion channels etc etc GIVE THEM A STUFFED TOY!!!!!!

get yer monkey cheque book out!!

carsmilesteve, Wednesday, 21 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Saw one from somewhere in which a large-muscled lovable-lug-type black man shaves with a particular sort of razor, puts on a suit and tie, picks up his briefcase, walks into the bedroom of his very young, sleeping daughter, puts his cheek against hers, and gives her a kiss. She says: "Bye, mom."

I thought this was a pretty great commercial.

Nitsuh, Wednesday, 21 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Why is ska the new ad soundtrack of choice? Is it the jauntiness?

Ellie, Wednesday, 21 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

LC sez DG = ITV Digital monkey. Hmph.

DG, Wednesday, 21 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Marks and Spencer - is this the first time that they have used TV to advertise? I can't remember any before.

Jonnie, Thursday, 22 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Jonnie, there is a particular reason you like that advert though isn't there? a certain Mrs Slim perhaps?

chris, Thursday, 22 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Well there is that too, but I am intrigued by M&S having to advertise on telly now. God knows why but I am.

Jonnie, Thursday, 22 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

these threads qualify you all for 24 hr mime gulags near slough.

Ed, Thursday, 22 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

The Lupo ad rules 'cos it reminds me of going down the greyhound track at Romford.

Trevor, Thursday, 22 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Adam and Joe are on the Virgin mobile advert! However I don't particularly like the rest of the Virgin brand (my god, another one for the worst advert thread: their post office thing!) so hrmph chiz. I also admit to larffing at the Post Office thread with Elton John getting some PUPPIES in brown wrapping paper oh whot joy! I also like the advert for the Winnie the Pooh sleep soother and think more adverts should be shot from a babies eye point of view eg the Pampers ad. Also, who can forget the classic I'M A BIG KID LOOK WHAT I CAN DO! I CAN WEAR BIG KIDS PANTS TOO! tra la la Huggies pullups, I was almost tempted to get a pair myself.

Sarah, Thursday, 22 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

There was an advert on the other Saturday morning for a doll with a cock that wees. It made me shriek.

Jonnie, Thursday, 22 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

BABY WEE WEE!! And the cock is detatchable for toddler genderswitch action.

Tom, Thursday, 22 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Does '..of the moment' preclude the Guiness adverts? I'll nominate 'Surfer' anyway. I know its the obvious choice (No. 1 of all time etc) but it is great. Jonathan Glazer said he made a whole feature film on only slightly more money than that 30-second ad cost! I also read a Creative Review article on how it was made and it was awe-inspiring. The work that went into it...

Will, Thursday, 22 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

The surfer ad is my grandad's favourite ad. He will be 89 on Monday. Grandad, grandad cool!

Madchen, Thursday, 22 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

The curent trend to have several subtly different versions of the same ad (Nivea, the one where the bloke sings "Can't take my eyes off you" down the phone and wakes up with a donkey in his room, etc.) - classic or dud? Sort of classic, but they could do so much more with it. Looking forward to seeing it done really well.

Mark C, Thursday, 22 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Will, that surfer ad is the worst in the world ever. Yeah nice horse effects but there's something about it that just sets my spine on edge - maybe the dead hand of J.Glazer who has also made all the world's worst music videos.

Tom, Thursday, 22 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Surfer ad = so vile it makes me ill, my ex had it on his PC and would insist on playing it OVER and OVER and OVER to me in an attempt to brainwash me into liking it. As I said on the other ad thread the Persil Capsyoules advert is the best advert in the world ever.

Emma, Thursday, 22 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

I'm with the anti-surfers posse on this. And it was surely a fix that it won the best ad ever.

Your ex sounds like a prize arsehole, Emma.

RickyT, Thursday, 22 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Well duh, RickyT, he is my ex = he is asshole. He was also the one who taped Eno for me.

Emma, Thursday, 22 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

The best Guiness ad is the dreaming competition. It reminds me of my grandad who was 90 this year. He can't see a fig anymore, yet he still has the best dreams evah. He says that nature has compensated for his physical shortcomings by opening his third eye - every night he sees in glorious technicolour, futuristic vistas of alien landscapes, curious semi-prehistoric creatures that attempt to communicate with him in a language he cannot yet fathom, but he's working on it. My grandad would thrash anyone in a dreaming competition anyday.

Trevor, Thursday, 22 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

The best Guinness ad is Carsmile Steve. He always looks so jolly with a full pint in front of him.

Tom, Thursday, 22 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Yep, I saw Sexy Beast and it looked right cheap too.

Pete, Thursday, 22 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Oh, *I* get it! Its 'gang-up on Will day', is it? Hah! Well, I only tried to put forward an opinion! I'm going home now and taking my ball with me. ;-) ;-) ;-)

Seriously, Bet on Black is pretty good too. I love the sense of speed in it. I also like the 'ring of fire' Curry Super Noodles advert.

Will, Thursday, 22 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Super noodle ads are great. One of my favourites being where the dad blames his baby for getting Mummy's blouse dirty.

Jonnie, Thursday, 22 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

SOopah noodle ads are rubbish and the product is nasty (despite me living on them during my student years). my favourite one is the Pampers ad, where they claim that the nappy soaks up pee and soft poo. what is the deal with that?

katie, Thursday, 22 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

I WANT HAIR

um, and also the timeless Garden Claw- although said Claw is actually rendered useless now, because MiniClaw is best for potted plants (and clawing people's faces off), and the Garden Claw Gold is adjustable, for the taller or shorter gardener. I guess GC original is for the skanks who can't afford an adjustable claw. Hmm.

Oh, and that Steam Clean one (can't remember the actual product) where the glass is so clean Mr Moustachio Man walks into the door when he forgets his briefcase, oh the hilarity. It's not just for glass, though, it can be used on ovens, kitchen surfaces etc, it's great. No really it is.

I hate Lupo.

emil.y, Thursday, 22 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

The impersonating a tiger frosties ad. tho best ad of all time is the john west salmon kick-boxing bear.

Alan Trewartha, Thursday, 22 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

do you think the ad men had been playing tekken as kuma? HE'S JUST A GRATE BIG BEAR!!

carsmilesteve, Thursday, 22 November 2001 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Lupo also has a stencil-spray graffitti dimension to its campaign: perhaps they are targeting joyriders?! It's actually not all that, except insofar as it's so anti anything that car ads are....

Sexy Beast = OK, esp.Ben motherfucking Kingsley giving only good perf. of life.

Surfer ad = greatly hated by me, I think largely becuz of "the fat-hearted drummer hit the beat with all his might" etc, which inflames the anti-hornby in me for some reason, and say YAY for mathematicians w.drum machines etc etc

Ad I quite like has two cartoon tots eating "junk" straight from a rubbish bin, then they stop and have some hovis.

saw that new one that uses Nouvelle Vague's I Melt With You about half a dozen times last night. think it was mobile phone related, er, t-mobile.

there's another one for boot's cosmetics that rips off a bjork video something rotten but still manages to be entertaining. again, good choice of music and clever visuals and no real hard sell.

koogs (koogs), Friday, 1 April 2005 09:17 (nineteen years ago) link

Advanced Hair Studio! A bizarre and extremely long infomercial which only ever appears in the wee hours of the morning, presumably to target some kind of demographic of balding insomniacs. Various sporting stars of yesteryear extoll the virtues of a dubious-looking hair regrowth process. My favourite is the guy who demonstrates the strength of his "new" hair by doing lots of vigorous sporty things like heading a football, sailing a yacht etc, and at one point letting a guy grab hold of his fringe and yank it in a truly wince-inducing way.

You know, I still like the Harvey Keitel "Direct Line" Mr Wolf ads, but he come over too avuncular to be truly threatening when he says "It's time to put you to sleep", just before he produces a flask of cocoa.

Maybe for the next ad phase, they should get Javier Vardim to recreate his character from "No country for old men", then the bods looking for cheaper insurance would look genuinely terrified when he said "hmm, heads or tails?"

Mark G, Sunday, 24 March 2019 09:52 (five years ago) link
