The Maestro is nominated for Best Original Screenplay--kinda odd. Aren't biopics usually seen as adaptations of some sort? I mean someone had to have read a book or two about Bernstein.

They adapted Bradley's nose.

I think biopics can slide if they're not also explicitly based on specific works (i.e. Cooper & Singer based the script on research from several books, articles, interviews etc.).

I would argue that Barbie is probably a more original work than The Maestro

Other original screenplay nominees from the past decade featuring portrayals of real people/events:

King Richard
Trial of the Chicago 7
Judas and the Black Messiah
Vice
The Favourite
Straight Outta Compton
Spotlight
Bridge of Spies
Foxcatcher

the second Borat movie was nominated for Best Adapted Screenplay. Adapted from the Borat character? Who was created by SBC?

Beyond Goo and Evol (President Keyes), Tuesday, 23 January 2024 18:07 (four months ago) link

Christ almighty there's maybe 3 halfway decent scripts in that entire group

badpee pooper (Eric H.), Tuesday, 23 January 2024 18:08 (four months ago) link

xp Yep, and Glass Onion was adapted from the Benoit Blanc character

The Academy is run by free spirits who appreciate that vibes are more important than rules and rationality.

I guess this would also apply anytime O'Shea Jackson, Jr appears in a film, since he's adapted from Ice Cube's nuts

Seems like they're consistent, at least. It seems hard to argue that Barbie is different from Joker (which was also nominated in adapted).

jaymc, Tuesday, 23 January 2024 18:15 (four months ago) link

I was skimming through the last few decades of noms in that category, and it's very rare to see something not adapted from a book, tv show, play, poem, graphic novel, or something narrative/with words. But there are a few other things adapted from general characters. For example, the first Borat was nominated for best adapted screenplay, based on "the character Borat Sagdiyev from the television series Da Ali G Show by Baron Cohen."

^^That might be their reasoning, as there's been other Barbie movies, comics, TV stuff...

didn’t the team push for adapted for a better chance at a nomination/win? feel like there was a story about that recently. or maybe it was the other way around

truly humbled underdog (k3vin k.), Tuesday, 23 January 2024 18:35 (four months ago) link

Other way around. They seemed to think it would be easier for Gerwig/Baumbach to win in original as opposed to adapted (because Oppenheimer) but, in reality, I'd say it's arguably the opposite now that Gerwig got snubbed in director. Anatomy of a Fall and The Holdovers would've arguably been stiffer competition imo

badpee pooper (Eric H.), Tuesday, 23 January 2024 18:42 (four months ago) link

Controp: Competition among artworks is what needs to die.

We will never see justice or fairness or, heck, even sanity in the Grammys, the Oscars, the Tonys, the Emmys, the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, or whatever lists Rolling Stone wishes to make.

I am a naive idealistic doofus but I literally do wish we could just celebrate all the things that are out there. ALL the things that someone thought people might want to see.

Yes the bullshit about who does and does not get nominated for the Barbie movie (which I loved unreservedly) is bad. But where is the universe where we can just like stuff? I mean, like it for itself instead of ranking it relative to other stuff?

B-b-but if we stopped ranking and comparing things, nerds on reddit wouldn't be able to point to data metrics to prove they have better taste than someone else.

Rank those examples of taste.

To be clear, I would be perfectly happy with getting rid of all data around films and the like - no meta scores and IMDB ratings.

WARNING: Meteorologists are currently debating whether California is about to get hit by something that they've been dreading for a long time: A series of storms that will drop multiple feet of rain over a few weeks.

They're not certain (yet), but it is entirely possible that…
