Going big on the music there

Ned Raggett, Friday, 2 December 2022 00:58 (three years ago)

looks like a cross between two story arcs that they've teased (Rocket's past, Adam Warlock) and who knows, might work?

I feel like Gunn's attention is kind of split between projects and hopefully Pratt gets third or fourth screentime in this one

outside of MCU, if you have a chance to play the Guardians video game, I'd recommend it. kind of a rail-style adventure game that's competently executed across the board, with no real curveballs but a thought-out plot and funny Adam Warlock speeches in full alliteration mode and ridiculous Infinity saga trappings (that darn Magus!)

mh, Friday, 2 December 2022 01:24 (three years ago)

oh, and the fact they land on what looks like earth with critters, probably the High Evolutionary?

mh, Friday, 2 December 2022 01:25 (three years ago)

Didn't Gunn say he had this all scripted before Disney canned (and rehired) him? Hopefully that means he had it pretty well mapped out. Though in interviews I think he said this was more of a struggle than the other ones, but perhaps that's the subject matter and end of an era weighing on him.

Josh in Chicago, Friday, 2 December 2022 03:26 (three years ago)

wow, "In the Meantime" now as old as "Come and Get Your Love" was when Vol. 1 came out

sloop johnnin' skater (geoffreyess), Friday, 2 December 2022 04:28 (three years ago)

yeah high evolutionary sounds about right.
why does everything accelerate into dark grim gritty, this shit should be vaguely amusing and do nothing more than that.

I am extremely hyped for this

castanuts (DJP), Tuesday, 10 January 2023 20:03 (three years ago)

KAAAAANG

mh, Tuesday, 10 January 2023 20:14 (three years ago)

I love the juxtaposition of Michelle Pfeiffer's extreme gravitas and the classic goofy purple/green Kang costume

mh, Tuesday, 10 January 2023 20:17 (three years ago)

(37 seconds in) What is with everyone in the Marvel universe having headgear that can instantly retract behind the back of their heads via button-push, by becoming digital particles no less, and yet these particles become armor helmets filled with mechanical parts and computer systems... and yet Iron Man is the only character that wields this universal techno-magic as his "power"? There oughta be whole armies that can instantaneously materialize weapons and tanks and armor if everyone's got one of these frickin helmets!!

Anyway I know it's just so the character in the action movie drama adventure can show their acting faces unobstructed for the audience's sake, but it might be the most disproportionately impressive technology that half of all the star characters seem to have at this point so I find it kind of funny from an in-universe standpoint.

Evan, Tuesday, 10 January 2023 21:00 (three years ago)

I kinda don’t care about the MCU at this point - the blush has left the rose, the thrill is gone, and there’s too much to stay on top of - but I am HYPED for this one.

The Triumphant Return of Bernard & Stubbs (Raymond Cummings), Tuesday, 10 January 2023 21:02 (three years ago)

(I’m kinda looking forward to Guardians 3, too)

i signed off after Black Widow, though I'm keeping an eye on the teevee stuff and will watch loki when it's back

“Cheeky cheeky!” she trills, nearly demolishing a roadside post (forksclovetofu), Tuesday, 10 January 2023 21:08 (three years ago)

Yeah if anything Loki is the series to watch before this comes out.

Ned Raggett, Tuesday, 10 January 2023 21:16 (three years ago)

phase 5 “surviving avengers not happy and want to change things back to how things were but instead make it worse and realize you can’t change the past” trope is getting a little tired at this point

scanner darkly, Tuesday, 10 January 2023 21:20 (three years ago)

i assume there's gonna be an "old man" universe that connects with logan before too long

Deadpool 3 is just sitting there...

Trailer breakdown for those who desire it

Ned Raggett, Tuesday, 10 January 2023 21:28 (three years ago)

This thread I guess is as good as any to hope for the best for Jeremy Renner. That accident sounds terrible. Two surgeries for blunt chest trauma and orthopedic injuries so far, likely lots of physical therapy to go (and that's the best case scenario).

Josh in Chicago, Saturday, 14 January 2023 20:06 (three years ago)

Doubtlessly he’s getting A+ care but damn sounds like it was potentially not survivable, so he was lucky.

Kinda related, watched Black Widow last night, first MCU I hadn’t seen, shockingly solid movie with more palpably intense action than i would have expected, which inevitably gave way to the almost-parodic inclusion of “sky fortress slowly plunging to earth” climax which seems to be the deal in every other of these flicks. It was sort of refreshing nonetheless, nice send off for SJ’s character, Pugh is fantastic and elevated the movie whenever she was in it from solid to very good, vv funny and as noted vv charismatic. Harbour was having fun, Weisz was good though I kinda felt like her character was inconsistent to a degree, Winstone was fine for what the role demanded (not much), he was kind of properly gross for the disgusting villain. I wish the film had sort of maintained the action style of the early portions, less of that bludgeoning MCU house style of the third act and more McQuarrie-era Mission: Impossible car chase close quarters fight scenes. But it went big scale and diminished at the end a bit.

omar little, Saturday, 14 January 2023 20:39 (three years ago)

Would have been interesting to see how it landed in the alternate world of non-COVID (where it would have been about six weeks after No Time to Die).

Ned Raggett, Saturday, 14 January 2023 20:56 (three years ago)

two weeks pass...

Is there a DCU thread?

This is what guy being promoted to management and doing on-tone management voice sounds like, damn

It’s like I’m at work here! I don’t hate any of this and I’d be ok assigned to one of these teams

xpost There is indeed such a thread

James Gunn's DCU: Embracing the Morrisonverse

Ned Raggett, Wednesday, 1 February 2023 03:50 (three years ago)

Watching Multiverse of Madness right now… this one ain’t no Black Widow.

unknown blues singer (morrisp), Saturday, 11 February 2023 23:45 (three years ago)

it’s good when it almost goes full Raimi imo

mh, Sunday, 12 February 2023 00:07 (three years ago)

Whoa - an uneXpected appearance in this one scene

unknown blues singer (morrisp), Sunday, 12 February 2023 00:13 (three years ago)

ooh just wait

mh, Sunday, 12 February 2023 00:17 (three years ago)

Oh man, this sure does go full Raimi, lol! Fun stuff

unknown blues singer (morrisp), Sunday, 12 February 2023 00:50 (three years ago)

Yeah it's a treat for sure.

Ned Raggett, Sunday, 12 February 2023 00:59 (three years ago)

the chekov’s gun in DSitMoM is pretty funny

mh, Sunday, 12 February 2023 01:26 (three years ago)

Kind of a Multiverse of MacGuffins aspect to the plot, but yeah very clever/satisfying once it gets beyond that.

unknown blues singer (morrisp), Sunday, 12 February 2023 01:31 (three years ago)

Still in a Marvel mood, I have now put on Love & Thunder. Opening scene very sad!

unknown blues singer (morrisp), Sunday, 12 February 2023 05:20 (three years ago)

That one was a swing and a whoosh. I liked the final few scenes… wish the rest of the movie had measured up to them.

unknown blues singer (morrisp), Sunday, 12 February 2023 07:16 (three years ago)

Yeah the Thor movie was a dud.

I watched Multiverse of Madness not too long ago and I generally recall enjoying it, but the details have completely evaporated from my mind.

sctttnnnt (pgwp), Sunday, 12 February 2023 16:58 (three years ago)

I’m a fan of the “source material,” and I see they paid Jason Aaron as a “consultant” (whatever that means)… maybe they should’ve hired him to actually write the screenplay (does that ever happen)?

The tone didn’t work, the jokes weren’t funny, the plot wasn’t engaging, you didn’t feel the gravity of Jane’s situation, it felt like nothing was at stake… (the special effects on the tiny planet were cool).

unknown blues singer (morrisp), Sunday, 12 February 2023 17:40 (three years ago)

I think Ragnarok benefitted from a 'shoot the moon' exuberance, it was a reboot that made sense. Tonally Love and Thunder landed weird, like it was a good villain for a different movie.

Ned Raggett, Sunday, 12 February 2023 18:33 (three years ago)

I maintain that Love & Thunder was basically a riff on The Princess Bride where Korg=Peter Falk but that they didn't do enough to make the 'story told by unreliable goofball narrator' tone clear and that it was an unsuccessful experiment that would've worked better as a D+ series than as a tentpole film in the franchise.

Beautiful Bean Footage Fetishist (Old Lunch), Sunday, 12 February 2023 20:19 (three years ago)

I am cool with GNR, but the amount of GNR content was bizarre!

that seems pretty superfluous, even as a childhood fan of the Evolutionary Wars
