RIP. Have never seen The Defiant Ones, only the 1001 parodies of it, but Morbs gave it a thumbs up.

I'm always talking about To Sir with Love; listed it on my favourite-movies-ever poll recently. If you're interested in Poitier, Mark Harris's Pictures at a Revolution is highly recommended.

I remember really liking To Sir with Love when I was coming up, haven’t watched in decades though. Still listen to the theme song of course.

My parents used to adore Lilies of the Field, but I haven't seen it in years... kinda want to revisit it

I almost never post GIFs, but I thought there might be one for this--looks like there's a dozen out there, at least.

Oddly enough, one of Peter Bogdanovich's TV movies was To Sir, With Love II, which is about Thackeray moving to Chicago and taking a job at an inner-city school. Lulu and Judy Geeson reprise their characters from the original.

I grew up w the story of how my dad met Mr. Poitier in an airport & said, "I was just about to purchase some earrings for my wife-who wld certainly leave me for u- wld you be so kind to pick them out?" He obliged. And that's how my mom has "the earrings that Sidney picked out."

Saxophonist Charles Brackeen. His first album, from 1973, was made with Ornette Coleman's former bandmates (Don Cherry, Charlie Haden and Ed Blackwell); later he was a member of Ronald Shannon Jackson's Decoding Society; and in the 80s he made a series of excellent albums with Olu Dara, Fred Hopkins and Andrew Cyrille. All of the latter are on Bandcamp.

A surprising amount of Hitler Youth footage in the TV news packages about Benedict. All I'll say is, even if we take him at his word that he was forced to be a Nazi, nobody forced him to be a Catholic priest.
