Rest In Peace. Eternal thanks from me for “Saint Jack” and “What’s Up, Doc?”, a film I strangely had great affection for as a kid. And for housing Orson Welles. Imagine that as a sitcom.

I listened to an interview with him today and he said everyone always thinks he wore ascots, but it was actually just a bandana and it's a habit he picked up from the crew in Texas while filming Last Picture Show.

I'm always talking about To Sir with Love; listed it on my favourite-movies-ever poll recently. If you're interested in Poitier, Mark Harris's Pictures at a Revolution is highly recommended.

I remember really liking To Sir with Love when I was coming up, haven’t watched in decades though. Still listen to the theme song of course.

Oddly enough, one of Peter Bogdanovich's TV movies was To Sir, With Love II, which is about Thackeray moving to Chicago and taking a job at an inner-city school. Lulu and Judy Geeson reprise their characters from the original.

I grew up w the story of how my dad met Mr. Poitier in an airport & said, "I was just about to purchase some earrings for my wife-who wld certainly leave me for u- wld you be so kind to pick them out?" He obliged. And that's how my mom has "the earrings that Sidney picked out."

Saxophonist Charles Brackeen. His first album, from 1973, was made with Ornette Coleman's former bandmates (Don Cherry, Charlie Haden and Ed Blackwell); later he was a member of Ronald Shannon Jackson's Decoding Society; and in the 80s he made a series of excellent albums with Olu Dara, Fred Hopkins and Andrew Cyrille. All of the latter are on Bandcamp.

this is a bit late on Pele but there used to be this very rough as fuck pub down the road from me in the 90's called the Nelson. The landlord had a framed pic of himself tackling Pele from when he played in the US behind the bar. It's just come back to me who he was - it was Roy Ellam who is more famous for the big gym he now runs than he ever was as a football player, but tbf he did get into the Revie era dirty Leeds side.

reading the wikipedia entry on papal renunciation and of the six historically reliable resignations, benedict 16's is literally the only "bored now" -- the other five were all political in some sense (deposed, stepped aside to solve a schism, stepped aside when realised way out of depth)

benedict 9 was like the covid-bolsonaro of popes and kept popping back for another go

mark s, Saturday, 31 December 2022 11:22 (three years ago)

because Francis, the selfish fucker, decided not to die before him. Now there is an unprecedented (?) situation where a current pope gets the funeral gig of a dead pope. Which is obviously a much worse thing than laundering nazi gold or covering up decades of child abuse !

calzino, Saturday, 31 December 2022 11:41 (three years ago)

or if Francis died before him would they have waited for him to die before ordaining a new pope to avoid this situation?

A surprising amount of Hitler Youth footage in the TV news packages about Benedict. All I'll say is, even if we take him at his word that he was forced to be a Nazi, nobody forced him to be a Catholic priest.
