Yeah, I'm stepping away from these threads to for a bit, I think. I really hit a wall yesterday wrt feeling despair and hopelessness about a lot of things, so probably not the best for me to be glooming things up.

I am currently reading about the early church and I would never have thought that any of the nitpicky internecine squabbles from that era would actually have much of an impact on the thinking of Christians in the goddamn 21st Century.

the attempt by one or two individuals to introduce articles of impeachment for nonsense shit isn't new or novel. Obama was actually the first President since Carter who didn't have any articles of impeachment referred against him to House Judiciary Committee.

On Wednesday, 31 members of Congress sent a letter to the acting House Sergeant of Arms, acting Senate Sergeant of Arms and Acting Chief of the US Capitol Police asking them to investigate the issue of tours further.
Democratic Rep. Mary Gay Scanlon, one of the co-signers of the letter, confirmed to CNN that she saw groups of tours of people in MAGA apparel one or two days before the attack.
"I had seen what appeared to be tour groups of folks dressed in MAGA attire, in the halls, in the tunnels," Scanlon told CNN.
"I don't know exactly what day it was. It was just surprising to see that happen because since Covid the building's been shut down. There aren't supposed to be any tours. So I kind of assumed it must be a new member who didn't know the rules or something. But, I mean, I can verify that it happened. There were people who were roaming around in the halls, apparently under the guidance of congressional staff."
Scanlon told CNN she saw a group of 6 to 8 people.
"Many of the Members who signed this letter, including those of us who have served in the military and are trained to recognize suspicious activity, as well as various members of our staff, witnessed an extremely high number of outside groups in the complex on Tuesday, January 5," the letter states.
It says the tours were "unusual" and "concerning" and were reported to the Sergeant at Arms on January 5. The letter says the groups "could only have gained access to the Capitol Complex from a Member of Congress or a member of their staff."

Parler's cardinal security sin is known as an insecure direct object reference, says Kenneth White, codirector of the Open Crypto Audit Project, who looked at the code of the download tool @donk_enby posted online. An IDOR occurs when a hacker can simply guess the pattern an application uses to refer to its stored data. In this case, the posts on Parler were simply listed in chronological order: Increase a value in a Parler post url by one, and you'd get the next post that appeared on the site. Parler also doesn't require authentication to view public posts and doesn't use any sort of "rate limiting" that would cut off anyone accessing too many posts too quickly. Together with the IDOR issue, that meant that any hacker could write a simple script to reach out to Parler's web server and enumerate and download every message, photo, and video in the order they were posted.

I know we've moved on, but my take on the $2,000 stimulus is that, while the Democratic messaging around it was definitely ambiguous and/or not quite unified, a lot of people outraged about it seem to be using it to confirm their preexisting belief that Democratic leadership is hopelessly awful. It feels like it's become a symbol or a talking point rather than a good-faith debate about the details of the relief bill.

Yes of they put space force hq in West Virginia.

𝔠𝔞𝔢𝔨 (caek), Monday, 1 February 2021 03:55 (five years ago)

Whatever covid relief bill passes, it will be done with reconciliation and it will contain whatever provisions the most timid of the 50 Dem senators is willing to vote for. Presumably Biden and Schumer will provide as many threats and sweeteners as they can muster to get all 50 ducks in a row. This wooing of blue dog Senate Democrats will be the theme song of this Congress.

Compromise isn't a principle, it's a method (Aimless), Monday, 1 February 2021 03:59 (five years ago)

Space Force budget is more or less on par with West Virginia's entire GDP, so Manchin would really be bringing in the space bucks.

pence's eye juice (Hunt3r), Monday, 1 February 2021 04:57 (five years ago)

Is Space Force still happening then? It wasn't shelved on the first day like the wall then? Labelled as trump's quixotic folly and punted into the closest bin.
Or used to denote the term trumpian as in utterly wasteful of govt budget and serving no practical purpose other than being something to laugh at, definitely not with.
Or are there brave new frontiers to fight on. While there's no great way to train for them. Maybe that secret base on the dark side of the moon to personnel?
I mean I assume there must have been a valid reason for starting a separate armed force beyond senility, right?

Stevolende, Monday, 1 February 2021 07:31 (five years ago)

my understanding is that the space force is basically just a rebranding of air force programs that already existed. seems like it's more about satellites than warfare in space or anything like that.

(The Other) J.D. (J.D.), Monday, 1 February 2021 07:50 (five years ago)

But now, as the Biden administration settles in, some close allies of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky are opening up about one of the longest-running dramas from the Trump era — the blitz of meetings, messages and public statements in Ukraine by former president Donald Trump’s personal lawyer, Rudolph W. Giuliani.
...

The new disclosures from Kyiv do not offer any bombshell revelations about Giuliani’s dealings. But they help fill in some blanks on his frantic — and unsuccessful — quest to press Ukraine to make statements seen as potentially helpful to the Trump reelection bid.
