looks to me like the eyes on the rising figure were blanked out purposely. not necessarily via software because there are plenty of ways to do that in a darkroom. but when images have (apparently) been manipulated I'd disqualify them.

The eyes in the image pom posted don't look to me simply like closed eyelids, but more like eerie white holes in his face. I couldn't explain why, if not manipulation.

The requisite flash may be the explanation you're looking for:
