1940's Best Movies: 80 Years Later

Even I am mystified at how Christmas in July didn't make the TSPDT cut.

Borzage just above Hitchcock-squared.

Wow. It's not even my favorite Borzage. Or Hitchcock.

Going for The Shop Around the Corner because, well, there's nothing wrong with it. Not a syllable.

loved The Shop Around the Corner, The Philadelphia Story, The Grapes of Wrath, Rebecca, The Great Dictator, The Thief of Baghdad, haven’t yet seen Foreign Correspondent or The Mortal Storm

also loved His Girl Friday

The rare time I'll be in sync with the results: The Shop Around the Corner (though I haven't seen it in years). I like Dance, Girl, Dance a lot, too.

Of the Disney fare, I cop to liking the mess that is Fantasia over Pinocchio.

Dance Girl Dance is the only thing here that I haven't seen; will try to catch its next TCM airing. Beyond that, I basically like everything on this list, with the exception of--*gulp*--His Girl Friday.

Remember the Night is a very good film that has the unfortunate disadvantage of being the second best Christmas movie of 1940 (though I still haven't seen Christmas in July).

I like both of those W.C. Fields pics, but I think he works somewhat better in shorter bursts: The Fatal Glass of Beer, from several years before these two, is prob one of the funniest films I've ever seen.

I haven't seen the Borzage, Cukor, or Arzner. I might go with THIEF, which is a pure delight, since it sounds like SHOP has this in the bag (Alfred otm there)

The Great Dictator is one of the great films of all time and should have gotten a vote or two

forgot to vote in this but would've had a hard time choosing between friday, shop, and rebecca (not perfect but still a fav). great dictator is excellent too.
