My top 5 is pretty much "throw a dart" territory. They're all among my very favorite movies.

haven't seen the Kiarostomi but intend to eventually. have cooled on Antonioni but haven't watched L'Avventura in 20+ years so i could be wrong. don't think any of the list is less than good.

1. The Shining
2. Psycho
3. Goodfellas
4. Five Easy Pieces
5. The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari

Yi Yi might’ve knocked Caligari out of my top 5 if I’d seen it more recently. I still need to watch L’Aventurra (I know).

Buñuel vs Kiarostami :/

The head says Buñuel, but the heart wins.

Scampidocio (Le Bateau Ivre), Thursday, 25 June 2020 20:10 (two weeks ago) link

Five Easy Pieces, All About Eve & Yi Yi

remy bean, Thursday, 25 June 2020 21:19 (two weeks ago) link

My copy of Yi Yi has sat unwatched for years. Might be time to finally crack that sucker open

k*r*n koltrane (Simon H.), Thursday, 25 June 2020 21:23 (two weeks ago) link

Five Easy Pieces.

Dan S, Thursday, 25 June 2020 22:25 (two weeks ago) link

of all of the films on the decade lists that led up to this poll, I think my favorites are four films that were not winners: In the Mood for Love, Sunset Blvd, Uncle Boonmee, La Dolce Vita

Dan S, Friday, 26 June 2020 00:22 (two weeks ago) link

also Close-Up, my favorite film of 1990

Dan S, Sunday, 28 June 2020 00:14 (two weeks ago) link

Close-up >>>>>>>>>>>> Goodfellas

Juanita was robbed (Eric H.), Sunday, 28 June 2020 23:06 (two weeks ago) link

theyre both pretty

brooklyn suicide cult (Dr Morbius), Sunday, 28 June 2020 23:14 (two weeks ago) link

one is in a popular genre, one is not; i wonder which was more popular on a messageboard that only gets cultish about music?

brooklyn suicide cult (Dr Morbius), Sunday, 28 June 2020 23:20 (two weeks ago) link

there are so many films from these polls which I watched a long time ago and about which I formed instant and lasting impressions. it's interesting seeing some of them again recently

Dan S, Monday, 29 June 2020 00:08 (one week ago) link

think I voted for Raging Bull, but my recollection is that The Shining was one of the most memorable films from 1980. The Elephant Man was another

Dan S, Monday, 29 June 2020 01:53 (one week ago) link

I’ve only seen half of these but Caligari ftw. Runners-up: Antonioni, Buñuel.

pomenitul, Monday, 29 June 2020 02:00 (one week ago) link

from the 1970 list - Performance was unhinged but fascinating, I watched it recently and want to see it again. I haven't seen The Conformist or Five Easy Pieces in decades. enjoyed watching M*A*S*H and Dodes’ka-den a couple of months ago.

Dan S, Monday, 29 June 2020 02:29 (one week ago) link

Close-up, Goodfellas, Days of Being Wild, and Kurosawa’s Dreams aside, 2000 seems like a better film year than 1990 overall, with In the Mood for Love, Werckmeister Harmonies, Code Unknown, In Vanda’s Room, Platform, La Commune, Yi Yi, The Gleaners and I, Songs from the Second Floor

Dan S, Monday, 29 June 2020 03:02 (one week ago) link

I think I mentioned it on the other poll thread, but 2000 is probably the best single movie year in my lifetime, rivaled probably only by 1999.

Juanita was robbed (Eric H.), Monday, 29 June 2020 17:08 (one week ago) link

besides Certified Copy and Uncle Boonmee, 2010 also featured Mysteries of Lisbon, Meek’s Cutoff, and Nostalgia for the Light, all amazing films

Dan S, Tuesday, 30 June 2020 23:27 (one week ago) link

2000 was a great year in retrospect

Dan S, Tuesday, 30 June 2020 23:42 (one week ago) link

a film from 2000 I still haven't seen is Jonas Mekas' As I Was Moving Ahead Occasionally I Saw Brief Glimpses of Beauty
