The DJIA is fake. The GDP is a little bit fake and a little bit real. The deficit is fake. The national debt is mostly fake. Needing money to buy food is real.

there’s the economy as in “the government is in surplus and it’s trickling down through the sweaty fingers of the rich”, and there’s the economy as in “how the hell am i going to eat tomorrow”

Macroeconomics versus microeconomics? (I didn't even take Econ 101.)

Good news: I will be getting out of the house next week. Bad news: It will be the first day of 5 weeks being on call for grand jury duty. It should be...interesting...going into downtown DC.

Anglophone nations are basically shit at stopping things is my take, though NZ might be an outlier.

It’s a tweed heads thing, but if you’re going to make that exception then why bother. Domestic travel ban deal with all the pricks wanting to spend their Easter at the Gold Coast.

It's weird, everyone talking about the out of doors being a ghost town, because I haven't left my building in over a week but every time I leave my apartment it's like party central. I don't think I've ever run into as many neighbors et al in the course of a normal day as I do when I'm trying to very quickly rush downstairs to pick up a pizza or get the mail and very pointedly trying to avoid coming into the proximity of other people. Go to your homes! Inside of them!

Unparalleled Elegance (Old Lunch), Tuesday, 24 March 2020 11:57 (six years ago)

If I knew that everyone in the building was properly self-isolating, I'd just say hey yeah let's have a big ol' potluck in the courtyard and commisserate! But I don't really trust that that's the case.

Unparalleled Elegance (Old Lunch), Tuesday, 24 March 2020 11:59 (six years ago)

I'm sorry to bang on about this but if you're self isolating you don't meet anyone else.

kinder, Tuesday, 24 March 2020 12:02 (six years ago)

No worries, I am self-isolating like a mf.

my experience is that when it comes to my feelings i need to suspend any moral judgement. i've found the only way i can live with myself is to accept my feelings for what they are.

if it helps reading your posts i don't feel moral judgement towards you; mostly i wish there was more i could do to help. my impression is that you're one of the people here who's being more affected by this crisis.

There's going to be a boom in family gatherings of various sorts when we get out of this but non-funeral memorial services are going to be huge. The idea of someone in my family dying and not being able to get to the funeral has been haunting me the last few days.

Matt DC, Tuesday, 24 March 2020 14:19 (six years ago)

i attended a virtual funeral last saturday (not close, cousins marriage relative) and it was pleasant enough.

ole uncle tiktok (darraghmac), Tuesday, 24 March 2020 14:36 (six years ago)

I went to a funeral yesterday, my gf's father died last week. I was drafted to be a pall bearer because of the (understandably) low turnout. We are going to have a picnic in his honor over the summer, or whenever this ends.

Kids still out playing cricket with their dad in the street across from me, as per every day this week.

Just been for a lovely walk with the kids up some remote woods we have nearby. Didn't see a single soul once in the woods but there still seemed to be an awful lot of people out and about in cars.

I am a little shocked to see that 4 showings of my condo were booked up through today.

DJP, Tuesday, 24 March 2020 15:43 (six years ago)

absolute nonsense that my roommate's office, a private electrical contracting firm, is still open and requiring people to come in every day bc they technically fall under the heading of "construction," which is for some reason an essential business in nyc. AND they're still open even though one of their employees' husbands tested positive. office is run by conservative shitheads of course. i'm fucking furious about it

i'm sorry your health is at risk i don't mean to minimize that but surely electrical contracting is critical + essential

https://www.askamanager.org/2020/03/my-company-plans-to-absorb-any-stimulus-checks-that-employees-receive-for-themselves.html

I work in an administrative role at a national restaurant chain.

I just got off of a conference call with corporate in which they told us that if the U.S. government sends us the proposed stimulus checks due to Covid 19, they plan to absorb the money we receive by cutting our hours to reflect that amount. In other words, if each person receives a check for ,200, ,200 will effectively go back to the company. Is this legal?

Presumably it will be a sacrifice shouldered by lower level corporate employees, since executives likely make too much money to qualify for the government checks. (My partner lost his job due to service industry layoffs, so money is a concern during this time.)

Miami weisse (WmC), Tuesday, 24 March 2020 16:01 (six years ago)

i guess we all gotta make sacrifices xp

Why does any building except a hospital need to get built right now?

There's more Italy than necessary. (in orbit), Tuesday, 24 March 2020 16:06 (six years ago)

yeah they haven't shut down the luxury construction sites in nyc yet have the?

my friends who are renting my place were talking about how the apartment on our floor is still being gut renovated despite all the lockdown orders.

Yerac, Tuesday, 24 March 2020 16:08 (six years ago)

The government have said that workers have to turn up to their workplaces today if their bosses ask them. @DailyMailUK - Why shame the passengers, not the people who forced them to get on the train? https://t.co/emSKgksqfm

My workshop is located in a group of 12 buildings, we’re the only occupied space and the others are all under construction - the crew is still coming in every day.

just1n3, Tuesday, 24 March 2020 16:20 (six years ago)

I imagine it's hard to just put a half-finished building (or half-finished renovation) simply on "pause." There are a lot of interdependent things that happen in sequence.

Also I suspect that if your apt. or house is in the middle of having a bathroom or kitchen rebuilt, it may be difficult for you to just, y'know, not have a bathroom or kitchen for a year. Also, there is weather. If your building project stops in the middle of putting up walls, the structure can't necessarily just sit and wait for you to get ready to work on it again.

Of course my heart is with the workers and their safety, but a heck of a lot of them are hourly and won't get paid to not work, so, I dunno.

90% of construction work in Paris and in the Ile de France generally has been stopped during the outbreak.

Do we have any posters living in Germany or Italy? Or elsewhere, besides North America, Ireland and the UK, and France? I would like to hear from them about how things are locally.

Joey Corona (Euler), Tuesday, 24 March 2020 16:53 (six years ago)

oh, we have Australians, and that's been interesting to read

Joey Corona (Euler), Tuesday, 24 March 2020 16:53 (six years ago)

I suppose being a mostly English language message board, the diversity will be rather limited. oh, aren't there Dutch and Belgians too, and someone in Switzerland? well, that's for another thread, don't mind me.

iirc Australians are regularly bitten by venomous spiders from a young age, and so have hardier immune systems
