Kinda feel like as the number of people implicated in these shenanigans grows and they (if not Trump himself) start to see some real-world consequences for their actions, those in the GOP with half a brain might begin to see the wisdom in maintaining a little distance from this mess.

Like if public perception starts swinging towards viewing this as legitimate treason, those old tribal bonds might start to dissolve a bit.

(This is all just Mr. Brightside pontification, really, though. The GOP is comprised of people all-too-willing to undermine their own best interests in service to the tribe, so I'm under no illusions that there's going to be a swell of outrage over Trump selling out the US.)

Is it worth asking (assuming it hasn't been already) whether Trump was willing to undertake such wildly inappropriate measures in justifying a pardon for Manafort because Manafort still knows some truly damning shit about Trump? Because, sorry, 'loyalty' doesn't quite cut it for me as a motive here.

My question was prompted by the likely circumstance of Trump's most vocal water-carriers (eg Nunes) having their fingers in one illicit pie or another and assuming that, whichever way the wind ultimately blows, Trump will unwaveringly stand by them (*snicker*).

And yes, I just assume Manafort has a subcutaneously-implanted piss tape minidisc somewhere on his person.

If the case against Manafort was based on fabricated evidence, it brings into question (at least in their minds) the reliability of all the other evidence against them.

It would be so awesome if Trump is removed from office ... and then the pee tape appears.

I think this Maguire guy sounds relatively neutral. At least, he does not seem like an explicit GOP ally, fwiw.

Then again, anyone that works with Trump on a daily basis and doesn't quit or declare WTF at the top of their lungs, well, I maybe I find them innately suspect.

Speaking of Carson, here's a funny story, for, well, sad levity. A friend of mine, their spouse does political stuff or at least interacts with political people. A good friend of that spouse worked at HUD, and when Ben Carson was hired said "well, I will do the best I can with what I am given and who I need to work with." After their first meeting with Carson, this person (who is African-American) reported back that it was like being stuck in the Chapelle skit about the black klansman.

This line that the WH counsel just happened to finally come to the conclusion that there is no executive privilege yesterday ...
