mh otm from the noize board twitter c/d thread, back when the pickle bar was a thing

I do not understand nerds following what other nerds are doing, especially when they have never met them before.

also my poll options here were amazing

CIO/KIU: using ilx like twitter

El Tomboto, Sunday, 4 June 2017 16:23 (nine years ago)

my virus scanner flares up twice opening that ^^ thread tbh

Le Bateau Ivre, Sunday, 4 June 2017 16:24 (nine years ago)

sadly unsurprising

El Tomboto, Sunday, 4 June 2017 17:39 (nine years ago)

I understand it now tho

mh, Sunday, 4 June 2017 20:18 (nine years ago)

tbf that was when twitter was mostly web-only, the iPhone had no third-party apps, and the web was an order of magnitude less responsive

and back then it was literally "what's up I'm at the tech conference, here is what a speaker is saying right now"

mh, Sunday, 4 June 2017 20:20 (nine years ago)

the fact that the inventors of twitter intended the —status update— to be literal is a delightful historical curio

lag∞n, Monday, 5 June 2017 13:21 (nine years ago)

the current use is a lot different from the original intended use!

I think my first twitter update was something like "ok about to leave work!"

mh, Monday, 5 June 2017 14:02 (nine years ago)

this account is funny https://twitter.com/VeryOldTweets it RTs the first 90 days of twitter

lag∞n, Monday, 5 June 2017 17:39 (nine years ago)

good shit

Yes. Amber Harrison has a few withheld in Australia.

Vernon Locke, Wednesday, 7 June 2017 01:11 (nine years ago)

is it because those governments are requesting they be censored?

k3vin k., Wednesday, 7 June 2017 03:09 (nine years ago)

wow thats pretty fucked up

k3vin k., Wednesday, 7 June 2017 03:11 (nine years ago)

lots of other governments are pretty strict about some shit that's fucked up to us
I remember seeing requests direct to the US government to shut down accounts that made fun of crown princes

El Tomboto, Wednesday, 7 June 2017 03:27 (nine years ago)

Since we basically DGAF, Twitter, FB et al take things into their own hands so they can keep doing business in those markets

El Tomboto, Wednesday, 7 June 2017 03:29 (nine years ago)

France, though, that's weird and unpleasant

El Tomboto, Wednesday, 7 June 2017 03:30 (nine years ago)

huh that's interesting. i'd only heard about compliance with mass censorship in turkey.

goole, Wednesday, 7 June 2017 03:45 (nine years ago)

on the other hand I hope that particular account is made unavailable everywhere

mh, Wednesday, 7 June 2017 03:49 (nine years ago)

I remember a Newsweek story from the 90s with a lead of "This story will not be published in our Candian edition." Something about a man accused of killing his wife, and it was such a big deal, police were trying to sequester the whole country - even checking for any printed material coming into Canada that had something written about the case.

pplains, Wednesday, 7 June 2017 03:53 (nine years ago)

Some of what I just wrote is a little inaccurate, but close enough for remembering something from 24 years ago: http://www.newsweek.com/barbie-ken-murders-190684

pplains, Wednesday, 7 June 2017 03:56 (nine years ago)

It's particularly ineffective because the "translate this tweet from Anglais?" link is still there, and expands a French translation of the original tweet (which is in English), regardless. So you end up with a much more accessible version than just displaying the original would have done!

I'm just confused about the policy around this, and who makes the decision to suppress a tweet. FWIW the orig. says that there wouldn't have been a London Bridge attack if muslims weren't living there. would the actual French government have requested suppression based on hate-speech laws? If so, I'm kind of.... okay with that maybe??

illegal economic migration (Tracer Hand), Wednesday, 7 June 2017 07:20 (nine years ago)

Or maybe it's Twitter being proactive? (In which case how come R1ch4rd Spenc3r still gets to post the shit he posts?)

illegal economic migration (Tracer Hand), Wednesday, 7 June 2017 08:17 (nine years ago)

is it twitter just preemptively censoring stuff that could/would fall foul of local hate-speech laws? (rather than the French govt requesting specific tweets be blocked?)

soref, Wednesday, 7 June 2017 08:44 (nine years ago)

Germany has had some tweets by Geert Wilders withheld recently iirc

Le Bateau Ivre, Wednesday, 7 June 2017 11:30 (nine years ago)

yeah twitter is full of dead-eyed americans demanding ethnic cleansing so hate speech laws might be the trigger here. really wonder how twitter is implementing this, everything they do is so half-assed

goole, Wednesday, 7 June 2017 17:03 (nine years ago)

I remember that pplains - there was a usenet group explicitly to get around those regulations iirc

maura, Thursday, 8 June 2017 14:34 (nine years ago)

mookieproof, Thursday, 8 June 2017 17:07 (nine years ago)

it's really something to be a semi-public figure as a journalist and spend so much time seeming completely incompetent at life on twitter

mh, Thursday, 8 June 2017 17:25 (nine years ago)

I love him so much.

There are a lot of Twitter users whose best tweets I like, and who I would like to follow except that they tweet WAY too much and thus would completely overwhelm my feed. Wish I could filter to only show their most-liked tweets (I realize that twitter kind of does this already, and Nuzzel can help). Basically if someone tweets more than like 5x a day, they lost me.

Dan I., Friday, 9 June 2017 20:49 (nine years ago)

unfollow & trust their best tweets will get RT'd into your feed

flopson, Friday, 9 June 2017 20:56 (nine years ago)

if you love something, set it free; if you unfollow someone, trust that their good tweets will get RT'd into your tl

this is a decent list but the commentary is truly painful

hmm yes some of those are canon

mh, Friday, 9 June 2017 23:52 (nine years ago)

Twitter has permanently suspended al Jazeera's Arabic account, something I am sure has nothing to do with KSA's Prince Alwaleed being Twitter's second largest shareholder.

Wag1 Shree Rajneesh (ShariVari), Saturday, 17 June 2017 08:48 (nine years ago)

wow

illegal economic migration (Tracer Hand), Saturday, 17 June 2017 08:59 (nine years ago)

Hmm. Seems to be back now - but with 200 followers. No explanation of why it was suspended / scrubbed.

Wag1 Shree Rajneesh (ShariVari), Saturday, 17 June 2017 09:04 (nine years ago)

twitter should have ended with the moore gym mcdouble tweet

global tetrahedron, Saturday, 17 June 2017 14:45 (nine years ago)

In my opinion... twitter.com is a dud website. I mean... I like getting status updates from my buddies , especially when they are at a trendy restaurant , but all this political talk is for the birds. I'm like... enough already you guys.
