tbf that was when twitter was mostly web-only, the iPhone had no third-party apps, and the web was an order of magnitude less responsive

and back then it was literally "what's up I'm at the tech conference, here is what a speaker is saying right now"

the fact that the inventors of twitter intended the —status update— to be literal is a delightful historical curio

the current use is a lot different from the original intended use!

lots of other governments are pretty strict about some shit that's fucked up to us
I remember seeing requests direct to the US government to shut down accounts that made fun of crown princes

Since we basically DGAF, Twitter, FB et al take things into their own hands so they can keep doing business in those markets

I remember a Newsweek story from the 90s with a lead of "This story will not be published in our Candian edition." Something about a man accused of killing his wife, and it was such a big deal, police were trying to sequester the whole country - even checking for any printed material coming into Canada that had something written about the case.

It's particularly ineffective because the "translate this tweet from Anglais?" link is still there, and expands a French translation of the original tweet (which is in English), regardless. So you end up with a much more accessible version than just displaying the original would have done!

I'm just confused about the policy around this, and who makes the decision to suppress a tweet. FWIW the orig. says that there wouldn't have been a London Bridge attack if muslims weren't living there. would the actual French government have requested suppression based on hate-speech laws? If so, I'm kind of.... okay with that maybe??

Or maybe it's Twitter being proactive? (In which case how come R1ch4rd Spenc3r still gets to post the shit he posts?)

Germany has had some tweets by Geert Wilders withheld recently iirc

yeah twitter is full of dead-eyed americans demanding ethnic cleansing so hate speech laws might be the trigger here. really wonder how twitter is implementing this, everything they do is so half-assed

tfw when you know you're winning

There are a lot of Twitter users whose best tweets I like, and who I would like to follow except that they tweet WAY too much and thus would completely overwhelm my feed. Wish I could filter to only show their most-liked tweets (I realize that twitter kind of does this already, and Nuzzel can help). Basically if someone tweets more than like 5x a day, they lost me.
