There are essential elements to being a woman; they are few, but they are profound, and they shape the way we interact with the world. To erase or deny that reality because it doesn’t include biological men is an insult to women.
Penny goes on to say that “feminism’s focus on women can be alienating to queer people and anyone questioning the gender binary.”
What else should feminism focus on if not women?
oh my god this bitch is crazy lol. crazy af.

xp quite likely, probably written to provoke a pissed-off reaction and charges that the trans community 'silences' anyone who dares question their orthodoxy, even a Jezebel writer. Of course, given her connections with Jezebel, she could easily have contacted plenty of trans activists if she wanted to write a critical but balanced piece about where trans activism fits in with and deviates from the traditional feminist movement. But that's not what she wanted to do.

millennial terfs are confusing to me. like i get if you're germaine greer or whatever you've been railing against trans women for decades and feel like you're this wonderful person on the side of oppressed womanhood and don't want to realize that you're actually an arsehole. but how do millennials get into this shit?
― Islamic State of Mind (jim in vancouver), Wednesday, February 15, 2017 7:54 PM (two hours ago) Bookmark Flag Post Permalink
you're treating it like an ideology people stumble across and buy into rather than a weak, vulnerable justification for hate, and hate is eternal my dude
― qualx, Thursday, 16 February 2017 03:21 (nine years ago)
like i've spent time thinking about that too, it's like the only remnant of second-wave feminism that has this ardent following (and anti-sex work which, same thing)
spend enough time in their communities and you realize it's just plain hate, same as any right-winger
― qualx, Thursday, 16 February 2017 03:25 (nine years ago)
was so tempted to go off on a ranting tangent on facebook but held back, since every reference to the article was completely negative already
when groups who are a minority or feel subject to oppression make their needs known and institutions and society are reconfiguring boundaries to find a new norm, there will be moments that are questionable -- maybe someone well-meaning did something that wasn't actually helpful, maybe someone in the group had an ideal that needed adjustment in practice. a feedback loop and open communication is good
but this garbage article didn't speak to that at all. it's just a complete refutation of change to the perceived status quo. there are a bunch of implications that the gains made by second wave feminists will somehow be lost with no evidence
"an all-women college is having to have serious discussions" is the most bullshit thing. institutions, especially colleges, have serious discussions about how to best serve students and what accommodations are reasonable all the time. if they didn't, they'd be shitty colleges!

I'm lucky in that i haven't encountered anyone like this irl (my social group via my wife swings heavily feminist and lesbian and is totally anti-terf). although having said that i just found out that a new women's library opened up in this city and that it's for "women born as women" or some such slogan :|
― Islamic State of Mind (jim in vancouver), Thursday, 16 February 2017 20:00 (nine years ago)
run by millennials as well if I'm getting it right
we also have a rape relief non-profit that doesn't serve trans women here too now that i think of it :/
― Islamic State of Mind (jim in vancouver), Thursday, 16 February 2017 20:04 (nine years ago)
kind of strikes me that there are... reasons.. these weird hostile articles seem specifically about trans women and not trans men although they make blanket statements about trans people
― mh 😏, Thursday, 16 February 2017 20:07 (nine years ago)
A friend is in the clutches of a TERFy message board full of really pissed-off women whose partners are somewhere in the transition process. It's... not edifying.
― jane burkini (suzy), Thursday, 16 February 2017 20:08 (nine years ago)
how are they both TERFs and in relationships with people who are transitioning?!?
― mh 😏, Thursday, 16 February 2017 20:09 (nine years ago)

xxp: Hence why they are pissed off.
― how's life, Thursday, 16 February 2017 20:14 (nine years ago)
Well, assuming that question is not rhetorical and without getting too person-specific, many of the women posting were decades into marriages with male partners who were referred to gender clinics/became gender-dysphoric/started transitioning. They are heartbroken and lashing out and as part of that, there's a lot of 'they're not women' talk.
― jane burkini (suzy), Thursday, 16 February 2017 20:38 (nine years ago)
I feel like there are people who go down a lefty/feminist road, come across terf theory and have this invigorating "wait, so I can be a feminist *and* a bigot?" moment. Plus, y'know, more money in hate than in journalism nowadays.
TBH I haven't read it because I'm like two months out of the closet and I don't fkn need that shit right now.

― the raindrops and drop tops of lived, earned experience (BradNelson), Friday, 17 February 2017 15:03 (nine years ago)
I find it bizarre that people knee-deep in leftist politics and social justice become TERFs, but also remember that common wisdom is still deeply transphobic and trans-exclusive, and the Natasha VC argument is anchored in 'common sense' and pleas to 'just be reasonable'

Do the Gawker sites look like shit to anyone running Windows? Trying a Windows PC to see if it can replace my iMac, most sites look fine except for Deadspin/etc. in Chrome and Firefox.

Gawker Media was a place that took life-changing chances on young writers and editors and gave them the paychecks and freedom to do work that they could not have done anywhere else. It’s a brave, important, dwindling pursuit, and I feel incredibly lucky to have stumbled upon and benefited from it. I hope it continues to exist.

I got the impression that was their way of pretending they bought only the non-litigious content and the writing staff, not the baggage. Which makes no real sense ideologically or legally, but whatever.
This was a new article, and a well-done one, imo. It'll be interesting to see how they react to something that was created under their umbrella
