Loratidine (the 24-hr version), Albuterol, and Flonase is the ticket!

Orbit (Orbit), Friday, 23 April 2004 00:40 (twenty-two years ago)

Is Flonase prescription-only?

I've only ever gotten it with a prescription, I can say that much, so probably.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 23 April 2004 00:41 (twenty-two years ago)

yes it is Rx only.

Orbit (Orbit), Friday, 23 April 2004 00:42 (twenty-two years ago)

Yes, it's prescription-only, and yes you definitely want the prescription alternative to taking speed to deal with allergies. Zyrtec, for instance, though Claritin in combination with Flonase may well be sufficient. Not that either of us is an M.D.

gabbneb (gabbneb), Friday, 23 April 2004 00:42 (twenty-two years ago)

Rhinocort AQ + TheraFlu sore throat formula or advil cold & sinus. Blearch.

The worst is that I get so stuffed up that I get really nauseous and can't stand to eat anything other than toast with jelly or sprite. And I HATE soda. Or if I've remembered to buy ginger root, sip some ginger tea. My doctor doesn't fully believe me that the nausea is from allergies, but I've gotten it every spring- I blame some kind of post-nasal drip action. :-P

lyra (lyra), Friday, 23 April 2004 02:31 (twenty-two years ago)

two months pass...
If you have mold allergies, do not come to Philadelphia tonight.

I irrigated my nose late this morning by about 3:30PM I was getting a sinus headache (while remaining indoors most of the day).

Rockist Scientist, Tuesday, 20 July 2004 20:52 (twenty-one years ago)

Is that what it is? My sinuses just kicked up a few days ago, after leaving me in relative peace for a few months. Fucking mold allergies? (I'm not in Philadelphia, but I'm guessing such things would be prevalent along the Eastern seaboard.)

spittle (spittle), Wednesday, 21 July 2004 03:55 (twenty-one years ago)

And I never had allergies at all until a few years ago. Are we sure this shit wasn't all created in some Pfizer-Merck lab?

spittle (spittle), Wednesday, 21 July 2004 03:56 (twenty-one years ago)

All this proves is that mankind was never meant to go outside.

latebloomer (latebloomer), Wednesday, 21 July 2004 03:56 (twenty-one years ago)

My sinuses are worse inside, yo. The got-dam a/c dries them out like deserts, and then whatever crap is in the rugs or pipes or whatever sets them itching and draining and burning.

spittle (spittle), Wednesday, 21 July 2004 03:59 (twenty-one years ago)

And also, does that whole nasal irrigation routine work? I've tried it a few times, but not enough to tell (it does have the attraction of feeling like you're doing something).

spittle (spittle), Wednesday, 21 July 2004 04:00 (twenty-one years ago)

This is what I check for Philadelphia. (It also happens to be where I go for allergy treatment.) If you are having similar weather elsewhere on the eastern seaboard, then yes, you'll probably have a similar mold count. When it rains a lot and then gets fairly hot, the mold tends to really proliferate.

Spittle, you do change the a/c filter I hope?

I think what's outside gets in anyway. I woke up very congested this morning, to a degree that is unusual, even though my windows were closed.

Nasal irrigation is great. It is not a cure, but it's effective treatment. (As I've alerady posted, I do it with a Grossan tip attached to a Waterpik.)

Rockist Scientist, Wednesday, 21 July 2004 04:05 (twenty-one years ago)

That's not an ad for the Asthma Center or anything. I'm not 100% satisfied with them, though they are pretty good. I have my philosophical differences with them about allergy treatment. (I have been getting shots most of my life. Skip talking about potentially curing my allergies with injections, and focus on doing what works for maintenance.)

Rockist Scientist, Wednesday, 21 July 2004 04:07 (twenty-one years ago)

My hay fever is lasting about twice as long as normal this year.

Can't for the life of me remember why I agreed to buy a house next to a farm :-(

Onimo (GerryNemo), Wednesday, 21 July 2004 09:22 (twenty-one years ago)

mercy. please. i'm not sure how much more of this i can take.

lauren (laurenp), Wednesday, 21 July 2004 14:18 (twenty-one years ago)

you do change the a/c filter I hope?

Wait, there's supposed to be a filter?

yeah, I do, but probably not as much as I should.

spittle (spittle), Wednesday, 21 July 2004 17:04 (twenty-one years ago)

my beconase aq nasal spray has worked AMAZINGLY all summer now, but I have found that it basically contains or mutes the symptoms in the nose, but for some reason makes my eyes and sinus headaches worse. still, rather have a slight headache than snot running all over my face

kyle (akmonday), Wednesday, 21 July 2004 20:18 (twenty-one years ago)

one month passes...
Mold is at the extreme level again.

I spent most of the day inside my apartment, not to avoid allergens, but just because that's how it turned out. I finally briefly left my apartment late in the afternoon, walked several blocks, stood around outside for about five minutes drinking iced tea and enjoying some shade, and then ended up going back home soon after. For that amount of exposure I have slightly itchy nasal passages and a headache.

Rockist_Scientist (rockist_scientist), Sunday, 22 August 2004 20:51 (twenty-one years ago)

seven months pass...
Well, fuck this. I woke up with a sinus headache. (In fact, it made it hard to sleep for a while.) I am sneezing. Nasal irrigation has mostly eliminated the headache, but it's still kind of in the background. The pollen and mold count is going to get much worse than this.

RS £aRue (rockist_scientist), Tuesday, 5 April 2005 10:51 (twenty-one years ago)

I am glad I now work on an industrial estate surrounded by chemical works. More pollution = less pollen!

Not as much pollution as London, though - I was amazed how my nostrils filled up with black goo when I was in London last week.

caitlin (caitlin), Tuesday, 5 April 2005 10:53 (twenty-one years ago)

Spring Allergies! Anyone gettng hit bad? What are you using to combat them?

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Tuesday, 5 April 2005 10:58 (twenty-one years ago)

I used to have this but now I am just allergic year-round when I'm at school, I think I'm allergic to my DORM ROOM. Something in the carpeting or curtains or whatever. Spring break ended yesterday, and my prescription (Allegra) has already become almost useless. Bah.

Maria (Maria), Tuesday, 5 April 2005 11:52 (twenty-one years ago)

i'm using a maximum-strength generic sudafed knockoff. clears the sinuses right up, but it puts me to sleep. so much for pseudoephedrine.

jody von bulow (Jody Beth Rosen), Tuesday, 5 April 2005 12:08 (twenty-one years ago)

one month passes...
fucking hell

strng hlkntgn, Tuesday, 31 May 2005 00:10 (twenty-one years ago)

they've actually been better this year than last, but fuck me the space between my eyes feels like a gremlin is smacking it with a mallet right now

strng hlkngtn, Tuesday, 31 May 2005 00:11 (twenty-one years ago)

sudafed, my dear man, sudafed.

Orbit (Orbit), Tuesday, 31 May 2005 00:12 (twenty-one years ago)

oh i'm doped up on something. actually it may not have been an allergy med now that i think of it. this is what i get for throwing all the remnants of the blister packs into one box at the end of the season.

strng hlkngtn, Tuesday, 31 May 2005 00:14 (twenty-one years ago)

The twelve-hour kind.
(xpost)

Ken L (Ken L), Tuesday, 31 May 2005 00:15 (twenty-one years ago)

Clarinase, if they have it over there - it has the antihistamine, and a 12 or 24 hour slow release sudafed as well. Sends you completely loopy with speediness, but damn does it work.

Trayce (trayce), Tuesday, 31 May 2005 00:34 (twenty-one years ago)

i get a headache everytime the fucking weather changes.

latebloomer: B Minus Time Traveler (latebloomer), Tuesday, 31 May 2005 00:35 (twenty-one years ago)

Texas just passed a law that's going to require all pseudoephedrine-based (eg Sudafed) products to be sold by pharmacists to cut back on speed freaks cooking meth. Wouldn't it have been easier to just say "don't sell forty boxes to the same person"?

milozauckerman (miloaukerman), Tuesday, 31 May 2005 01:28 (twenty-one years ago)

Fucking allergies *@()#*@()*#@(). I'm a little stuffed up right now.

I've been buying my advil cold+sinus from drugstore.com because Rite Aid around here wants a drivers license to buy a single box. I think it's been handed down to them, but it's stupid.

lyra (lyra), Tuesday, 31 May 2005 01:54 (twenty-one years ago)

fuck, i can't tell if my out-of-it-ness today is allergies or if i caught a cold from the girl i hooked up with on saturday, who had a cold for a while.

jaymc (jaymc), Tuesday, 31 May 2005 01:56 (twenty-one years ago)

Pseudoephedrine has only ever been available behind the counter at pharmacies here... and in fact even then it is often hard to buy. Can you buy it in supermarkets in the US or something!?!?

Trayce (trayce), Tuesday, 31 May 2005 01:58 (twenty-one years ago)

(mind you we can get codiene meds real easy here =))

Trayce (trayce), Tuesday, 31 May 2005 01:59 (twenty-one years ago)

Yes it's OTC

Orbit (Orbit), Tuesday, 31 May 2005 01:59 (twenty-one years ago)

Supermarkets and drug stores, some convenience stores, yeah. I used to get a bottle of 100 60mg pills from my school pharmacy for $3.99 that would last me a couple of months.

milozauckerman (miloaukerman), Tuesday, 31 May 2005 02:00 (twenty-one years ago)

The candles on the horse chestnuts are doing it for me right now, those bastards.

Madchen (Madchen), Tuesday, 31 May 2005 19:04 (twenty-one years ago)

claritin does the trick for me, but it's so expensive - hence: HI DERE I'M IN HELL. WATCH AS I CLAW MY EYES OUT IN ORDER TO SCRATCH THEM BETTER. LISTEN AS I SNIFF EVERY 15 SECONDS TO STAVE OFF THE FLOW OF MUCUS

Amon (eman), Tuesday, 31 May 2005 22:59 (twenty-one years ago)

I take the walmart generic (equate?) 24 hour allergy pill (I think it's like $17 for 60) and they work really well.

luna (luna.c), Tuesday, 31 May 2005 23:00 (twenty-one years ago)

two months pass...
My head is killing me and it happens way too often.

Rockist_Scientist (RSLaRue), Saturday, 6 August 2005 21:28 (twenty years ago)

So what is it that gives vicious allergice reactions in August? Seriously, advice hugely appreciated.

Markelby (Mark C), Saturday, 6 August 2005 21:57 (twenty years ago)

ragweed season!

mike h. (mike h.), Saturday, 6 August 2005 21:58 (twenty years ago)

For me, it is primarily mold. Where do you live?

Rockist_Scientist (RSLaRue), Saturday, 6 August 2005 21:58 (twenty years ago)

Ragweed comes in to it too, generally late in August around here (Philadelphia).

Rockist_Scientist (RSLaRue), Saturday, 6 August 2005 21:59 (twenty years ago)

Even if you don't know what it is causing the problem, you could experiment with only going outside during certain parts of the day and see if some times of day are worse. (They usually should be.) Of course, staying in-doors may not be a choice, or may not seem worth it. I seem to generally have less problem being outside in the evening.

Rockist_Scientist (RSLaRue), Saturday, 6 August 2005 22:01 (twenty years ago)

i have no idea what my main triggers are, but my allergies have been terrible all summer. they haven't been this bad since i was a kid and according to all the information i've seen there hasn't been particularly high levels of anything around here this season. it's driving me crazy.

La Monte (La Monte), Sunday, 7 August 2005 01:23 (twenty years ago)

Did you check the mold count? And where are you?

Rockist_Scientist (RSLaRue), Sunday, 7 August 2005 01:26 (twenty years ago)

four weeks pass...
O"IHY*({*(H:JKLH:HUIPUGPIVGUBVFU^R&(%$*^%#$*$&%R&%*(%^*(&^R&%ED(%&(^*D^*RCDYCR(&%

OTM. I was outside to go from my apartment to the gym and then back again (with a short detour to a drug store), about 12 blocks in total. Now I have a headache. We are being told it will be a very bad month for ragweed.

Rockist_Scientist (RSLaRue), Tuesday, 6 September 2005 19:49 (twenty years ago)

"seasonal"

Rockist_Scientist (RSLaRue), Wednesday, 7 September 2005 12:51 (twenty years ago)

burning throat, sinus headaches, runny nose - it's all the perks of having a bad cold except that it never gets better

just like Christopher Wray said (brownie), Monday, 29 April 2024 14:41 (two years ago)

medicine makes it better for me. flonase and the meth one. claritin-d.

but if nothing works you might want to get those shots that doctors give.

scott seward, Monday, 29 April 2024 14:46 (two years ago)

definitely worse for me after it rains.

"When rain hits grass and weed pollen, it can break up the pollen into smaller particles. This makes the pollen spread more easily and can lead to worsening allergy symptoms, particularly with heavy downpours. Rain can also increase mold and dust allergy symptoms, as mold and dust mites thrive in warm, humid conditions."

scott seward, Monday, 29 April 2024 14:48 (two years ago)

fyi several pharmacists and RNs have told me that claritin is a pretty mediocre antihistamine and is actually only effective for 25% or less of people at the normal dose. at an effective dose, it's not non-drowsy. so they market claritin-d hard

zyrtec/xyzal are a bit better (I use the latter) and I believe they're both available in generics now. you can always supplement them with a generic sudafed decongestant

I try to not take all the things all the time but xyzal+sudafed every morning and maybe a little generic flonase to supplement

if I do yard work or spend a bunch of time outside I obviously shower later and burn my clothes (j/k)

ɥɯ ︵ (°□°) (mh), Monday, 29 April 2024 15:25 (two years ago)

i just buy claritin-d for the meth properties. it keeps me upright. it mostly works. the flonase does seem to help with my nose/eyes/throat.

stuff like zyrtec make me sleepier. allergies make me VERY tired. like, falling down tired.

scott seward, Monday, 29 April 2024 15:35 (two years ago)

this is the dustiest town i've ever lived in. tons of trees. tons of dirt. they don't really clean the streets. we had boxes of books out on tables Saturday and Sunday at the store and I was going through them inside here this morning and they were just covered in dust/dirt. so, you know, i'm surrounded.

scott seward, Monday, 29 April 2024 15:41 (two years ago)

xp I hear that. I get this weird fatigue by evening some days this time of year and every time I'm just "why do I have no energy? I must be old or dying"

ɥɯ ︵ (°□°) (mh), Monday, 29 April 2024 15:41 (two years ago)

what's weird - it IS fatiguing but I have a hard time sleeping when I'm going through it.

just like Christopher Wray said (brownie), Monday, 29 April 2024 16:46 (two years ago)

I've had fairly good luck with cheap generic Claritin (loratadine) - I had absolutely horrible allergies as a kid when there was only Dimetapp and Benadryl, the meds today are much better
Cheap generics mostly keep it at bay until some unknown tree comes online in June, but that generally lasts just a week or two - no idea what's the source, but no amount of pills will save me

Andy the Grasshopper, Monday, 29 April 2024 16:59 (two years ago)

two weeks pass...

bad this year. yeesh. i feel like i'm in the poppy fields with dorothy and the scarecrow. this town is so fucking fecund. its like a jungle out here. i swear everything just became impossibly green and lush in one week. which, you know, is a good thing. just complaining. nobody else wants to hear it! i nap a lot when i can. go home early. its so nice out and i feel crap. oh well.

scott seward, Monday, 13 May 2024 17:34 (two years ago)

At least one study has indicated that the more carbon there is in the air, the more potent the pollen itself is.

scott seward, Monday, 13 May 2024 18:50 (two years ago)

The top 10 most challenging places to live with seasonal allergies are:

Wichita, Kansas
Virginia Beach, Virginia
Greenville, South Carolina
Dallas, Texas
Oklahoma City, Oklahoma
Tulsa, Oklahoma
Richmond, Virginia
Des Moines, Iowa
Raleigh, North Carolina
Fayetteville, Arkansas

scott seward, Monday, 13 May 2024 18:50 (two years ago)

now i'm not moving to des moines!

scott seward, Monday, 13 May 2024 18:51 (two years ago)

Least challenging (#96) on that list is Cleveland! I live there and would probably die if I lived in Wichita.

just like Christopher Wray said (brownie), Monday, 13 May 2024 19:39 (two years ago)

brutal right now

brimstead, Monday, 13 May 2024 20:01 (two years ago)

here you can type in your zip to find out what's causing the itchy eyes and sneezing

Ragweed has always been my chief nemesis

Andy the Grasshopper, Monday, 13 May 2024 20:06 (two years ago)

ooh, this one has a sinister name: Five-Horn Smotherweed

Andy the Grasshopper, Monday, 13 May 2024 20:08 (two years ago)

It's highly toxic to horses, not sure about grasshoppers though xp

Bernard Quidbins (NickB), Monday, 13 May 2024 20:09 (two years ago)

Brownie - my birthday twin iirc - I work for a big employer based in your city and someone brought me buckeyes recently! They are DELICIOUS. I have nothing to add about allergies - don't have any. Sorry for all who are suffering tho.

can confirm, not a great city for avoiding allergies

seven months pass...

this year is starting early... I think it's these acacia-like trees with bright yellow blossoms (silver wattle?), plus the winds

I have some Claritin lozenge things that seem to be working

Andy the Grasshopper, Monday, 13 January 2025 18:20 (one year ago)

Ragweed pollen, why u break sinus?

Nicholas Raybeat (James Redd and the Blecchs), Friday, 17 October 2025 10:13 (seven months ago)

truly one of the worst pollens

mh, Friday, 17 October 2025 13:40 (seven months ago)

fwiw the reason I tested myself for covid a couple of weeks ago was because I *don't* have seasonal allergies but had a relentlessly stuffy nose. I sort of figured, hmm, with global warming and weird weather in general, maybe there was something in bloom in mid-October that I don't usually encounter, and my nose was reacting. But no, it was covid. In fact, it's remarkable how many people I know that have had similar allergy-like symptoms the past week or so, too, though as of yet none of them have tested positive for covid. Just strange stuff in the air all around. Pollen, smoke, covid, tear gas, etc.

Josh in Chicago, Friday, 17 October 2025 13:44 (seven months ago)

It is happening again!
