The hammer of spring came down on me today. I can barely breathe. My eyes are fawcetts.

I took some Claritin Reditabs (or I took a Claritin Reditab, I should say), but it ain't working so well. What works for you? Is Allavert (sp?) any better?

HELP!Ë?

it's really ridiculous this year

gabbneb (gabbneb), Thursday, 29 April 2004 21:12 (twenty-two years ago)

Don't know about redtabs, but the regular Claritin usually needs a few days to kick in for real. Does wonders after that, though. Before, I used to just snurfle loudly and annoy people.

I really need one that works immediately!!!

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Thursday, 29 April 2004 21:18 (twenty-two years ago)

Not a fan of claritan myself. Benedryl will clear you up but zonk you out. Your basic psedoephedrine will clear you up and even make you happy and awake if you take enough...Sudefed, Tylenol Cold/Sinus/Allergy etc. I take the occasional Allegra, which is prescription, as well as sniff some Flonase, prescription also, and when it's really bad take the Tylenol Cold/Sinus/Allergy daytime version during the day and the nighttime version at night. This season, by the way, is unbelievable, and many people I know who've never even dealt w/ allergies are getting their asses kicked.

I have been enjoying Vitamin B6 + Advil Cold/Sinus + Ibuprofen. I have Claritin but I get heart palpitations from it (!!!)

Anyone tried Allevert?0

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Thursday, 29 April 2004 22:34 (twenty-two years ago)

claritin and allegra made my allergies worse and gave me migranes too, I hate them. I was using perscription beconase nasal squirt stuff, but it's not working this year; i've heard singular works great, but insurance doesn't cover it. alavert otc seems to be okay though. benedryl is still the king but it will knock you out cold.

kyle (akmonday), Thursday, 29 April 2004 22:37 (twenty-two years ago)

Quitting smoking helps too.

dean!dean!dean (deangulberry), Thursday, 29 April 2004 22:38 (twenty-two years ago)

Absolutely nothing has worked for me, and it looks like this is going to be the roughest season in years. I'm tempted to give Alavert a go.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Thursday, 29 April 2004 22:39 (twenty-two years ago)

i only tried the alavert once, I'm not sure how well it worked. I also took twice as much as I was supposed to.

does anyone see an allergist? I used to but never really thought I was getting much better, so I stopped. I vaguely remember hearing that allergies were treated entirely differently in the UK than in the US, and thought it might have something to do with US allergists drawing out patient's symptoms longer than they needed to because they could fleece the insurance companies.

kyle (akmonday), Thursday, 29 April 2004 22:42 (twenty-two years ago)

I think Alavert is one company's name for generic OTC Claritin -- if so, it probably won't help. Is your problem the allergic reaction itself, or other problems caused by the allergic reaction? (In my case allergies trigger annoying sinus problems. If I don't take antihistamines in time, I get clogged-up sinuses, which I treat with frequent doses of hot soup.)

j.lu (j.lu), Thursday, 29 April 2004 22:59 (twenty-two years ago)

alavert sucks. alex, you need to get a prescription for allegra.

lauren (laurenp), Thursday, 29 April 2004 23:35 (twenty-two years ago)

argh, i need to renew my prescription for flonase.

stockholm cindy (Jody Beth Rosen), Thursday, 29 April 2004 23:37 (twenty-two years ago)

Claritin and loads of pseudoephedrine.

miloauckerman (miloauckerman), Thursday, 29 April 2004 23:40 (twenty-two years ago)

This is the first year I've ever gotten allergies. Luckily, it was only for one day. Yet, my eyes and nose were burning, you could say. It was awful! I had gone to another school to play a basketball game and I guess they just had some plants I had never been around. I hate that place!

Aja (aja), Friday, 30 April 2004 00:30 (twenty-two years ago)

claritin and eyedrops - i never had a problem with pollen til last year

cinniblount (James Blount), Friday, 30 April 2004 01:02 (twenty-two years ago)

i glanced at this thread earlier, knocking on wood, feeling relatively superior to any seasonal allergic insurgence. ef me.

gygax! (gygax!), Friday, 30 April 2004 05:48 (twenty-two years ago)

Zyrtec is prescription only, though, right? What are the side effects (affects??) if any?

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Friday, 30 April 2004 14:22 (twenty-two years ago)

There are no side effects for me (which is not the case even with OTC allergy meds). My best friend is an MD so I don't have to worry about the Rx. :-D

gygax! (gygax!), Friday, 30 April 2004 14:44 (twenty-two years ago)

oh gygax, I have several things I think your best friend needs to prescribe for me....you see I have these muscle knots and this chronic pain.....

kyle (akmonday), Friday, 30 April 2004 18:04 (twenty-two years ago)

the Claritin is working okay for me here in the States. seems better than the Zirtek i use in the UK which i'm convinced has been weakened for economical purposes - i should've got a perscription already. Beconaise (sp) nasal spray also good.

stevem (blueski), Friday, 30 April 2004 18:06 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah me too, dude, I have serious problems getting HIGH

dean!dean!dean (deangulberry), Friday, 30 April 2004 18:07 (twenty-two years ago)

Claritin works vaguely well for me, but it doesn't seem to help the eye shit that well, which is REALLY ridiculous this year. I hate looking like I'm stoned and crying all day long; I usually try to reserve that for "me" time.

nickalicious (nickalicious), Friday, 30 April 2004 18:10 (twenty-two years ago)

reactine (10 mg cetirizine) tends to work ok for me!

s1ocki (slutsky), Friday, 30 April 2004 18:38 (twenty-two years ago)

four weeks pass...
I was perfectly fine all year until the other day and then suddenly BOOM! -- head clogged, sinuses fucked. My wastebasket is full of used tissues. The worst sympton of all is not wanting to listen to music.

Stacey Pollen (Andy K), Saturday, 29 May 2004 06:42 (twenty-two years ago)

Claritin is worthless. Taking two Benadryl before I go to sleep helps quite a bit, but I can't take them during the day.

Not wanting to listen to music, not wanting to read, etc., yeah - it feels like there's a white noise barrier between my senses and my brain.

miloauckerman (miloauckerman), Saturday, 29 May 2004 07:27 (twenty-two years ago)

Woops. This turned out to be an actual cold. So much for the three-day weekend.

Stacey Pollen (Andy K), Tuesday, 1 June 2004 00:21 (twenty-two years ago)

eleven years pass...

After I blow my nose, there is consistently a high-pitched whistle as air floods back into my sinuses. Been taking generic Flonase for three days but it hasn't started to work yet.

how's life, Thursday, 17 March 2016 18:49 (ten years ago)

Not actually stuffed up but getting that scratchy, gross feeling in my nose and throat since yesterday and feeling tired, having more trouble waking up.
