bagley might be a little slight for center on defense in the NBA but he seems like a smart & good kid who should be able to get himself to like... playable on that end. and the offensive potential seems limitless.

one of the enduring mysteries of the college to pro transition is that its common for an elite prospect to underperform their talent in some way then upon getting to the pros they do totally fine... or not, and its super hard to tell which player will succeed and which wont, all else being equal id take the player who has the tools and is underperforming over the one who has question marks over their fundamental abilities, of course maybe danny aigne takes a look at their mind types and choses bagley, i dont have access to the mindtype data

Ayton doesn’t play with much energy on defense. He rarely makes two efforts at contesting a shot, and he’s not particularly diligent about getting himself involved in a play when it doesn’t involve his man.

The frustrating part about the way Ayton plays is that it’s not due to any lack of ability. His defensive potential is off the charts. When he’s locked in on that side of the ball, he can be dominant. He made a few huge defensive plays in Arizona’s 67-64 win over Texas A&M on Tuesday, a game in which he significantly outplayed Robert Williams, another big man projected to go in next year’s lottery.

this prob comes down to a judgement call on personality and motivation but if i were a drafter and felt like i got a sense that those werent going to be an issue id feel fine writing off his college block numbers to the usual college bs

if bagley doesnt totally pan out i cld see him as a antwan jamison / ken faried type ie a player with a great feel for the game who just doesnt quite have the stuff to dominate

yeah i guess a lot of the ayton question comes down to answers about his personality etc that seem unknowable to the public

yeah it will be interesting, I think they lack the star power to really be on the houston/GSW level when the playoffs come but they're just below

depends on the leaps the young guys make

generally the nba is about star power but thats not the only way to do it, these celtics are kinda like a detroit style ton of really good players who play well together a, except they have more star power, theyre like detroit with more stars, bout to stomp all over the flawed lakers (rockets, dubs)

this is not directed at anyone here but one thing I think tends to be under appreciated is when teams like boston play well without a superstar player or players, there is only so much improvement possible from re-adding that superstar or superstars. the team dynamics change in ways that compensate for their absence, other players grow into roles, etc. adding these players back is not the same as just adding the value that was missing, it is a proportionately smaller improvement

that said the playoffs is where that will really matter so idk. celtics will def be east favorites next year (pending bron decision part 3) but healthy warriors and rockets teams still seem a cut above to me

Pacers looking good going into the offseason. Haven't really thought too much about what pieces they should add ... kinda intrigued to see if this team can just grow a bit. They m/l have everyone signed through one more year, then basically all of their olds (Bojan, Jefferson, Joseph, Collison, Young/Lance) are up, with the youngs Domas/Turner/Oladipo on team-friendly contracts. Glenn Robinson III in a weird spot ... was supposed to be the starting lock-down SF this year and kinda got derailed (and the Pacers were probably expecting to commit some money to him after that). Hope they figure out a way to sign him on a short deal this summer. Also unexpectedly fell in love with Trevor Booker as a bench dude, would love if they had a spot for him as well.

Kinda wish they'd managed to develop Ike Anibogu to the point where they could use him defensively in the playoffs. Really excited to see him and Edmond Sumner get playing time next year; both are more intriguing bench dudes than TJ Leaf. Wouldn't mind Leaf, Joe Young, and Poythress cleared out.

Klay Thompson’s professed dedication to the Warriors and the Bay Area isn’t just words. He said he wants to stay and he’s already taking the steps to do so.

According to multiple sources, Thompson and the Warriors have already engaged in discussions regarding a contract extension. If the sides agree this offseason, Thompson would not hit the free-agent market for up to another five years.

Signing an extension would significantly decrease the maximum Thompson could make — and save the Warriors millions in luxury tax penalties.

The most he could get in the first year of an extension is a 120 percent raise. With the highest annual increases allowed, that would put Thompson’s extension at four years and just over $102 million. Add the $18.9 million he is due to make in 2018-19 and Thompson is looking at a maximum five-year salary of $121 million should he sign an extension.

If Thompson were to play out his contract and sign a new deal with the Warriors before the 2019-20 season, the maximum he would be eligible for — based on current salary-cap projections — is five years, $188 million.

However, Thompson probably understands that the maximum is not really on the table. The Warriors would almost be forced to let him walk if he demanded a new deal averaging $37.6 million per year since Stephen Curry and, presumably, Kevin Durant would be making the maximum. Three maximum salaries — for players in their 30s — and luxury-tax penalties figure to be too high even for the Warriors.

However, if Thompson became a free agent and went elsewhere, he could sign up to a four-year deal worth $139 million. Adding next year’s salary and that’s $158 million he could make over five years.

The NBA rumor mill has the Philadelphia 76ers interested in Thompson, who would seem to be the missing piece for the burgeoning franchise. The Los Angeles Lakers are an obvious match for the SoCal kid. Several teams could use Thompson, which is why there is little doubt he could get the four-year max if he hits the free agent market.

But Thompson wants to remain a Warrior. And he has proven that by engaging in discussions that could leave at least $30 million on the table (over five years) to remain in the Bay through his prime.

“It would be hard for me to envision going anywhere else,” Thompson said in a profile by Bleacher Report.

What’s more, two sources said talks have included Thompson taking an extension with an average of around $23 million a year — which would come out to about four years, $92 million, nearly $50 million less than he could get on the open market — and puts his five-year total at $111 million.

The final numbers won’t be, and can’t be known until July as Durant’s contract status will impact Thompson’s extension. Of course, there is no guarantee the sides reach an agreement this summer.

But if Thompson does sign an extension, it would be his second consecutive team-friendly contract. Thompson signed a four-year, $69 million extension in 2014. That figure was an expectation of what his maximum would be under the projected salary cap. So when the cap turned out higher, Thompson was locked in, missing out on the four years, $73 million extension he could have gotten.

Thompson has said he cares more about his happiness than the extra money, and he is happy here. While many expected Thompson to want out of the Warriors, where at best he is No. 3, he sees the franchise as a place to spend his entire career.

The choice between $150 million in a place he doesn’t know or $110 million in a place he knows he loves — it isn’t that hard for Thompson, those close to him say. In the end, he is still set for life financially. And he still has a lucrative deal with China-based shoe company Anta, and other endorsements such as Chocolate Milk and Body Armor, to supplement his NBA salary.

Why not just play it out as a free agent and re-sign with the Warriors for more money, even if it’s not the max? No doubt, Thompson and the Warriors could find a number that is greater than $102 million but still below the max.

But Thompson hasn’t had a track record of prioritizing squeezing every dollar he can. Plus, he doesn’t really want a prolonged or contentious negotiation, or the stress that comes with his wealth of options.

Thompson likes peace. He likes easy. He likes what he has. An extension would get all this done, help the team and keep this train rolling.

like...i can see this argument bc as long as the hampton 5 is alive the chances of winning a title is small. but kawhi is still p young and theoretically in his prime for the duration of his next contract, and i think he can still be a cornerstone of a team that challenges for a title in that window. but if you have uncertainty about kawhi's health and commitment, you dont want that supermax deal eating up half the cap by year 5.

lma's contract isnt that bad bc he's actually a highly productive player who arguably just had his best season. he has 3 years left on his deal and the spurs dont have a lot of salary committed to anyone else in that third year. they could theorteicaly rebuild on the fly with LMA shouldering #1 duties while they pursue a youth movement around whomever they could bring in for kawhi plus dejounte, their #18 pick, and some other younger role players on the roster. but i can't really see pop doing that at age 69.

the pau gasol contract is truly atrocious bc his value only diminishes by the year and he's getting $32.8m over the next two. if they can find some team that needs to meet the salary floor while they tank, then they can clear space for lebron james this summer.

this is probably the most important offseason in spurs history though in terms of the range of possible outcomes. they could get kawhi back plus lebron and be a challenger to GS and HOU in the west. or they could trade kawhi and strike out on big free agents and struggle to make the playoffs next year. tony parker has said he would consider signing with another team. manu could retire. three rotation players have player options. or...they could bring back a really similar looking team next year. no idea.

These dance teams always struck me as having one basic move: they spread out their stance, bend over, put their hands on their knees, rock from side to side, and whip their hair around in circles. Some variation of that makes up about 75% of their dance routines as far as I can see. They do expend a lot energy but its hard for me to say they generate a lot of extra enthusiasm for the game of hoops.

EL SEGUNDO, Calif. -- With his brother Lonzo watching from the sideline, LiAngelo Ball went through a pre-draft workout with other prospects for the Los Angeles Lakers on Tuesday.

The second of three Ball brothers, LiAngelo isn't sure what his draft prospects are after leaving UCLA early during his freshman season to play in Lithuania with his younger brother LaMelo. But he is ready to tell NBA teams that he has closed the chapter on his brief, turbulent time with UCLA and that he has matured after playing pro ball overseas.

Ball said when teams ask why things ended at UCLA, he tells them, "I don't really remember too much about that. I just moved on, went overseas and just learned from over there and then came back and brought my talent back out here."
