Weird. I wonder how this 3D would work gamewise on a handheld. It's one thing when you're sitting still in a theater looking at a screen, but on a small mobile device - I'm just having a hard time picturing what kind of experiences it would offer and how good it could possibly work. Will be interesting to see (supposedly I'll be spending a day at E3 this year, so hopefully they'll be demoing something). Even though the PR comes from the main Nintendo site, a part of me wonders if it's just bullshit to make Sony shit all over themselves and freak out over their psp2 plans.

Seems like Nintendo of America wouldn't be pleased that the same week they're finally launching the XL in NA, Nintendo of Japan announces they are going to announce the DS successor.

I'm still very doubtful of 3D gaming (especially on a handheld) being anything other than a useless gimmick. I'm definitely interested to see what they're doing and how it's going to work, but I'm feeling really skeptical. I guess my main worry is that whatever they do will end up being especially hard on the eyes. I already find it hard to look at a small DS or PSP screen for extended amounts of time and adding in effects that are tricking your eyes seems like it might make headaches come even faster...

Jeff LeVine, Wednesday, 24 March 2010 14:49 (fourteen years ago) link

according to unconfirmed reports the 3D in the screen can be turned off, so not every game will have to incorporate it. the same reports seem to suggest that the two screens will pretty much join up and the graphics will be bumped up to gamecube levels, both of which will be much more useful in the long run. its all guesswork at this point though - nintendo have said its going to be playable at E3 so we only have to wait 3 months to find out.

serious nonsense (CaptainLorax), Friday, 25 June 2010 04:30 (thirteen years ago) link

I like everything about it except that you can only look at it from one angle. Wld much rather have a DSi XL than this for that very reason.

breaking that little dog's heart chakra (Abbott), Friday, 25 June 2010 04:31 (thirteen years ago) link

you can turn off the 3D easily, though, so no probs

Nhex, Friday, 25 June 2010 04:38 (thirteen years ago) link

Yep, little worried about this:

The screen has a terrible, terrible angle of viewing

The elephant in the room, and the reason Nintendo was adamant that no one film 3DS games directly off the screen. This is going to be the system's make-or-break issue. The trick to the 3DS's visualization technology is that it (apparently) layers two screens one on top of the other. When you look at it straight-on, it looks like 3D! But tilt the machine even just a couple of degrees from dead-on and suddenly the illusion shatters and what you see is two ghost images rather than a single unified "solid." Look at it from a side-on, over-the-shoulder perspective and it's even worse. In a sense, the 3DS is the conceptual opposite of the DSi XL; the latter was purportedly designed to be a system that encourages people to gather round a single system and watch, but try doing that with the former and everyone's going to see something very ugly unless the depth slider is set to "off." More crucially, though, the 3DS's visual effect can break even for the person using the system if they don't hold it very, very carefully. I found that the natural movement of my hands and head during a fast-paced action game like Starfox 64 caused the system to move out of alignment for me. I wonder what impact this will have for long-term play; if you have to hold the system very carefully at a precise angle, it's going to become very tiring very quickly... to say nothing of the fact that the games which stand to benefit most from 3D visualization are the ones most likely to cause you to get you into the action and let your angle of viewing drift.

Still, I'm pretty pumped about the 3DS

Come along, we shall dine at an expensive French restaurant. (Z S), Friday, 25 June 2010 04:41 (thirteen years ago) link

It occurred to me that this reaction (while very sober and reasonable) is probably the most negative hands-on I've read about the 3DS. I have this suspicion that due to the press' tepid reaction to the original DS and opposite predictions for the PSP (as Parish mentions), perhaps the journalists would rather praise it now rather than looking foolish later (as it'll be easy enough to trash if it releases badly which is pretty unlikely) - but for now they're hesistant to point out shortcomings. Though of course, there's also the reason that Nintendo is strictly claiming that the system's far from finalized, in both hardware and software.

Also it's possible that there'll be a lot of launch titles that overuse or badly use the 3D (like the touch screen in the first gen DS games) and that'll change over time as developers get more used to it.

Nhex, Friday, 25 June 2010 05:46 (thirteen years ago) link

don't think i've ever thrown my head about when playing a handheld game, so i can't imagine that being a problem. more worried about me being lefthanded & there being games that use a analog nub + stylus in right hand control system (although if you can use a finger maybe it would be like dual analog?).

yeah, that's quite a lot! I mean, more than a 360 or a ps3 - kind of mind boggling (even if they get it down to $250 in NA). Depends on the games for me, but I'm not really interested in 3D effects or a gameboy virtual console, they're going to have to be something really special & special isn't more Mario Kart and Zelda remakes and Animal Crossing again.

Given how deep the DS catalog is, I can't see any possible reason for wanting the 1st gen version of this, given the $ & battery life.

Euler, Tuesday, 11 January 2011 21:01 (thirteen years ago) link

does look excellent, no doubt

just don't get what's the use of a handheld with that kinda battery life; I guess it's mostly for playing at home?

one reason it bugs me is that I get paranoid about how many charges my portable batteries are gonna take before dying.

Euler, Tuesday, 11 January 2011 21:08 (thirteen years ago) link

this is a really strong lineup but I can't help but think about how this is the end of one of the last bastions from 2d gaming. :-/

original bgm, Wednesday, 12 January 2011 16:05 (thirteen years ago) link

Last I saw the region-lock wasn't confirmed - has anyone seen a solid confirmation yet? That really sucks. And along with that battery life :( Wah.

I'm afraid they've sucked me into being a first-gen sucker with Nintendogs/cats and a Professor Layton alone :( But oooh, Paper Mario 3D, holey moley.

I don't see my actual DS languishing in the corner though - if the battery life is that crap it still looks as if the DS will be coming out and about with me. I also need a new special library card since my other one broke (my fix isn't it good enough).

Anyone else get the feeling that they are rush releasing this to get it out before the end of the financial year?
most the games that are ready at launch are cheap ports, features like the VC shop and video playback aren't gong to be ready for launch & will come with a firmware upgrade at an unspecified date - in fact if you want to transfer the DSiware games you bought to the 3DS so you can sell your DSi the promised software solution to that is not going to make launch either.

zappi, Thursday, 20 January 2011 13:31 (thirteen years ago) link

I wanted the new game to be more like Mario Galaxy, I guess. A 3D game world that still evokes the old game. But instead they made it in an anime style that feels weird to me with that property.

Of course I'd also like an updated sidescroller but I know those don't tend to sell well.

OTM; this is what I'm doing (except for Ghost Recon, which I will be buying even though it's basically just a DS game). Devil Survivor and OoT 3DS are supposedly aiming for June release dates, though, so it shouldn't be TOO long before there's a bunch of stuff I covet. plus it's not like I don't have 43843546843413547311327 DS games to work through in the meantime.

Ok, spent about an hour with one of these this morning. The 3d sweet spot is a lot less restrictive than I'd feared it'd be, you can actually move left to right a good couple of inches before it blurs. The 3D effect seems to work best with the slider at 30-40%, beyond that it gets hard to focus (for me). The analogue slider control is fantastic. 3D camera is a bit wow too. Pilotwings is really lovely, but that island feels pretty small, not sure how long it'll keep being fun to fly round. AR and Face Raiders are fun for about 3 minutes each, but pretty pointless really (the face recognition in face raiders decided I was a baby boy, despite the beard).

It's definitely a big step up, also disregarding the 3DS. You're going from Playstation 1 graphics to Wii graphics (the Conduit guys ported their engine w/all assets directly to the 3DS to test). Some things even look better than on the Wii, like the lighting (see Resident Evil gif above).

And that's much more important to me than the 3D, to have a Nintendo handheld capable of delivering beautiful 3D games, something the DS never could do.

abcfsk, Thursday, 24 March 2011 11:04 (thirteen years ago) link

and the analogue stick

avant garde a clue (Autumn Almanac), Thursday, 24 March 2011 11:13 (thirteen years ago) link

You're going from Playstation 1 graphics to Wii graphics

It doesn't look like that though, because the increase in screen resolution really isn't that noticeable.

PS1 was 320 x 240 (76.8k pixels)
Wii is 853 x 480 (409.4k pixels, so about a 5x improvement)

DS was 256 x 192 (49.1k pixels)
3DS is 400 x 240 (96.0k pixels, so less than a 2x improvemet)

I mean sure, it can throw round more polygons and better textures...but I expect the majority of games on here are going to be flat-textured primary colour nintendo titles, and I think getting those to look better really just comes down to rendering them in higher resolutions.

JimD, Thursday, 24 March 2011 11:45 (thirteen years ago) link

yeh it can push a lot more polys & has modern shaders etc. whether developers take advantage of this or not well who knows? Capcom seem to be making some effort though.
3DS is 800 x 240 on the top screen btw

zappi, Thursday, 24 March 2011 11:48 (thirteen years ago) link

xp That's not true at all. The horrible texture capabilities, lighting and blocky polygons of the original DS ruined every 3D game's aesthetic appeal. Not sure you remember how DS games look, but Pilotwings (which, despite your remarks that it doesn't take advantage of the hardware, looks exactly like Wii Sports Resort and uses its assets) and especially Street Fighter 4 definitely look generations removed, not to mention the upcoming high-polish games like Resident Evil.

Yeah, but you only see 400x240 with each eye, so that doesn't really count for anything.

You never wanted to see a 3D game on DS. They were all butt-ugly.

Oh I dunno, not all of them. Just the ones that overstretched. There were plenty that looked fine.

The point though is that 3D games were very much in the minority, maybe because the machine was underpowered, but more (I think) because nintendo core audience doesn't care about fancy graphical abilities anyway. I mean, what proportion of wii games really take advantage of its increased power over, say, an N64? So I'm not saying the 3DS isn't capable of more powerful stuff than older machines, I'm saying that it having those capabilities doesn't mean people will bother to make use of them.

(c/w iphone gaming at the moment - it's capable of infinity blade, but 99% of the titles on there look like angry birds, cos that's what portable and/or casual gamers seem to want more of, plus they're a shitload cheaper to develop).

JimD, Thursday, 24 March 2011 12:09 (thirteen years ago) link

JimD, Thursday, 24 March 2011 12:24 (thirteen years ago) link

probably a mix of both. anyway my 3DS has finished charging. here we go!

zappi, Thursday, 24 March 2011 12:27 (thirteen years ago) link

I mean, what proportion of wii games really take advantage of its increased power over, say, an N64?

All the 3D games I'd say. Mario Galaxy is a graphically fancy game that's pushing the hardware, and that's a big part of the reason it's good and popular. If anything, a game like Metroid Prime 3 demands a more powerful hardware.

Also, while the 3DS launch software selection is so-so like launches often are, none of the games are Angry Birds-like and Nintendo made a whole speech at GDC rejecting the micro-priced model. The iphone example won't fit, that's why they put visuals to the forefront with this system. That's why they're putting out a 3D epic as the first Mario game, and not another 2D throwback.

And 3D games are in the vast majority for this launch (14 out of 15), and will remain so through the system's lifetime, so already we're seeing why the new hardware makes a difference.

abcfsk, Thursday, 24 March 2011 12:30 (thirteen years ago) link

Nintendo made a whole speech at GDC rejecting the micro-priced model

Micro price isn't actually their problem though, it's the £15-£20 price point that their huge mainstream audience expect to pay for wii or DS games. I don't think devs can afford to make complex fancy-looking games unless they're going to be able to pump them out at £40 each. And I'm sure they'll try doing that with 3DS to begin with, but I don't know whether nintendo handheld owners are going to accept those prices, at least in big enough numbers for that model to stay viable. It just feels more likely to me that, as happened with DS, the vast majority of 3rd party releases will end up aiming at mid-price while ignoring most of the hardware's potential. Just seems naive to me to believe that developers are going to go into development thinking "what's the prettiest game we can make?" rather than "what's the most profitable?" (First party stuff is different obviously, because then it's in their interests to sell the hardware too).

I'm fighting a corner I don't actually want to be in, here. I'd much rather see 3DS succeed as a proper current-gen console with proper current-gen games. It's just a while now since Nintendo have managed that, and meanwhile they're making a LOT of money out of not even trying to. So why change?

JimD, Thursday, 24 March 2011 13:30 (thirteen years ago) link

first impressions - i like it, but i have my doubts that its the world beater that Nintendo hopes it is.
hardware is a little bit ugly, what were they thinking with that top lid? - AR games are charming but a little janky - 3D takes a little bit to get used to but works great, the 'sweet spot' has a lot of latitude moving back & forward, not much left to right - 3D slider is more of a focusing thing than a strength thing - battery takes far too long to charge - analog stick is awesome there should be two #lefthanded - Pilotwings looks like Wii Sports Resort, including the jaggies - upscaled DS games look kinda blurry, you can force 1 to 1 mode but that looks kinda small.

zappi, Thursday, 24 March 2011 14:00 (thirteen years ago) link

xp I'm not sure I follow your DS analogy. The DS is generally praised for its amount of 'traditional'/meaty hardcore games in genres like RPG and strategy, even getting main series exclusive releases like Dragon Quest IX.

There's a lot of cheap shit on Wii and maybe we'll see the same on the 3DS. I wasn't really speaking of how well 3rd party developers will do. All I can speak of so far is what we've seen, and what we've seen makes me really happy the 3DS is a much more capable piece of hardware. That was the outset of this discussion, our own impression of the graphics. Imagining a SSFIV port on the DS makes me ill. Actually, outside of Ubisoft, the 3rd party developers seem to embrace the meatier hardware nicely so far. It's the games themselves that haven't been particularly exciting and mostly ports.

i'm skeptical about that - especially comparing the last several DS hardware releases vs. the last several PSP releases. the DS prices keep going up, sadly

i'm PSP2 will be a nice system, but I'm not sure what Sony can do differently in terms of marketing strategy to fight Nintendo, they don't seem to be able to fight Nintendo on one side nor Apple on the other

of course, there's always the possibility that 3DS will underperform due to the price, but maybe that's why they released it in march instead of november...

one thing that i've noticed is that films & photos have a preset level of 3D, you can't use the slider to alter them - games manage this cos the game engine is being processed in realtime. but one persons comfort level of 3D effect is different from the next eg. i have it at a very low level with the games so far - the nature film that comes with the first firmware upgrade in the EU has some scenes that look great to me but others that just do not work for my eyes, double images and eyestrain agogo, so there's no way i'm going to be able to watch a whole film on this thing.

zappi, Saturday, 26 March 2011 18:57 (thirteen years ago) link

based on my own anecdotal experiences today, i don't predict a rousing success for this system, at least immediately. i was able to walk into two stores that had plenty of stock of the system. Best Buy didn't even bother putting up a section with the games - they just threw them onto a wheeled cart with no signs or anything

i dunno, could very well be my own stinginess but i think Nintendo kinda shot themselves in the foot with the $250 pricing

I agree; there was only one GameStop in LA which had enough preorders to do a midnight launch, and when I walked by around 7 PM there were only 2 or 3 people in line. I was there when the Wii launched and let me tell you, this was no Wii launch.

personally I think the launch software (both in terms of game availability and system functionality) did more to cripple interest than the price. rabid diehard fans will pay $250, but it's a much harder sell when you're asking that much for something you're pushing out early to make your quarterly earnings statement look robust. plus a lot of people pay for things like these by trading in their old systems, but anyone with any DSiWare basically has to hold on until May if they want to keep all the stuff they've bought.

the DS had a similar launch line up iirc. can't remember how well it sold initially but I don't think it printed money from launch. they need to get demo units in stores, the concept is neat but it's not till you see it in action do you appreciate actually how nifty it is

mine just showed up at the office! I just spent the last hour showing it off to some work folks, one of whom is going to Gamestop straight after work to get one, so I guess that's going to be this thing's viral trajectory rather than everyone going I WANT IT all at once.

fuccin AR shit is OUT OF THIS WORLD though. I was seriously not expecting it to be so impressive but the moment I realized you could walk around the target I damn near filled the cup. Face Raiders owns too; it is a monstrous amount of fun to run around shooting Jibjab-style floating versions of your own fat head. and they REALLY need to be working on an AR Pokemans Snap RIGHT NOW.

also the build is way more solid than the blue outer casing would have led me to believe; the analog pad in particular feels REALLY solid, like what I wish the PSP's felt like. loving the dashboard update too where you can actually go back to software (at least 3DS software, haven't tried a DS game yet) instead of hard-dropping out of whatever you're playing.

tl;dr: I was fully prepared to be a skeptic but as it turns out this thing owns immensely.

The tv ads in the UK are soooo rubbish. "Numpty from Penge" sez "omg! it's like... 3d... and stuff..." and then gurns a bit? I know I know you can't really show the actual 3D really well, but unconvincing numpties in a white room looking a bit simple? I R not advert guru but...?!

I have taken about 100 pics of my Nintendog (Mrs Gale, she responds to Cathy!) and next is a fun game called 'figure out how to move them from 3ds to real world'.

The AR stuff is absolutely sweeeeeeeeeeeeeeet, face raiders is terrifyingly good and will work even better in the pub. A personal highlight was putting a Zelda hat on Mrs Gale but then again give me that option and it's not like I'm NOT going to fall over howling in glee, is it...

I'm hoping that the March release is for fanboys and there will be a $50 price drop for November.

I haven't played the 3DS yet but I'm not too impressed with the launch games. The highest scores on metacritic are 85 and 77 (Street Fighter and Ghost Recon). Also, I don't care at all about a remake of Ocarina - been there, done that. And what's up with some of the launch games being dumbed down? I thought 3DS was the capable of pushing dynamic street fighter backgrounds. I've read that Lego Star Wars 3 was completely dumbed down for the 3DS. I was hoping that 3DS would be a good system for me to finally play a Lego game after enjoying the same game at a PS3 kiosk in GameStop. And they cut out multiplayer for the Lego game. Pshaw!

cold hands of monkeys on my heart (CaptainLorax), Thursday, 31 March 2011 22:44 (thirteen years ago) link

rating be damned, if you like turn-based strategy games Ghost Recon is a winner winner chicken dinner. it's pretty obviously an DS game fancied up with some subtle-but-cool 3D effects but the gameplay is tremendous; it reminds me of epic GI Joe battles back from when I was but a wee bairn.

w/r/t the launch lineup I'm good w/ just Ghost Recon & Pilotwings and then just gameflying the rest (besides, I have Radiant Historia and Monster Tale to play through anyway). if the release calendar for June is accurate then we're supposed to be getting OoT 3DS, Devil Survivor Overclocked, and Cave Story 3DS then so I should at least be good until then (not that I expect the latter two to come through on that schedule).

re: OoT, I had always regarded it as the first shot across the bow of Actual Gaming - e.g. the trailblazer for never-ending side-quests padding the length of the game/infuriating "helpers" bothering you every four seconds with instructions/items you use once and then never again - but playing it again now I have to say it's refreshing how little it holds your hand. I mean, Navi gonna Navi but it's not nearly as irritating as it used to be now that other games have pushed that paradigm to the nth degree.

You know this resident evil thing isn't as bad as it sounds, it's not like you can finish then game then that's it, it's never playable again. The impression I get is that it's more like the whole structure is a set of timed missions which are designed to be played over and over, and it's just your cumulative stats that aren't deletable. Which sure, is still a pain in the arse, but it's not an entirely new thing - I remember not being able to wipe the high score table on tetris DX for the gameboy colour, for example. It's just that kind of level, really.

Anyone who owns a 3DS system and connects to the Nintendo eShop at least once before 11:59 p.m. EST on Aug. 11 is eligible for the following:

1. Starting Sept. 1, Nintendo 3DS Ambassadors will be able to download 10 NES™ Virtual Console™ games at no charge and before they are available in the Nintendo eShop to the general public. These games, including Super Mario Bros.™, Donkey Kong Jr.™, Balloon Fight™, Ice Climber™ and The Legend of Zelda™, are slated to become paid downloadable games, but Ambassadors get them early for free. Once the paid versions of the games are posted to the Nintendo eShop later in the year, the updated versions will be available to Ambassadors for download at no cost.

2. By the end of 2011, Nintendo will provide Ambassadors with 10 Game Boy Advance Virtual Console games. These include games like Yoshi’s Island™: Super Mario™ Advance 3, Mario Kart™: Super Circuit, Metroid™ Fusion, WarioWare™, Inc.: Mega Microgame$ and Mario vs. Donkey Kong™. These games will be available exclusively to Ambassadors, and Nintendo currently has no plans to make these 10 games available to the general public on the Nintendo 3DS in the future.

this sucks donkey balls. "sorry you wasted seventy bucks - here, have some ROMs!"

it would have been much smarter on their part to give early adopters like fifty bucks in credit on the eshop - admittedly they would have still had to pay the publishers for downloaded games rather than giving out first-party shit exclusively, but unlike with the PSN the install base is super-low so it might be worth it just for the brand equity and to get users involved in the eShop economy. instead they're going with "exclusivity!!!!!" when nobody with a brain could possibly think that they're going to keep stuff like Mario Kart or WarioWare just for folks who bought in early.

in other news, I started a new job which necessitates a long-ass bus ride, so I picked up one of these and urge anyone with a 3DS (or really even just a long commute and a bunch of battery-powered devices - this thing's been a lifesaver for both my Kindle and my iPhone too) to do the same.

And we were wearing a lot of athletic shorts. (jamescobo), Thursday, 28 July 2011 17:26 (twelve years ago) link

it did kind of own to have one at E3 and get a fuckton of street passes every second; I filled out all the puzzles and got all the way through the Find Mii game once. probably not $70 worth of ownage though.

the really weird thing here is that historically Nintendo's always been the most resistant to price drops - back during 2009 and early 2010 when everyone was calling for them to cut the price of the Wii they held steady and talked about how a price drop would just devalue their unique entertainment opportunity; IIRC they even outright rejected the idea that it would help them get new fans and would only actually attract bargain-hunters. for them to slash so much off the price this early in the 3DS' lifecycle is pretty striking.

And we were wearing a lot of athletic shorts. (jamescobo), Thursday, 28 July 2011 19:53 (twelve years ago) link

you are probably better positioned to know this but i thought there was a ~lot~ of consternation amongst snr execs @ nintendo about the success of the iphone/ipad/other devices & what it meant for the continued profitability of the handheld division? im not surprised theyre being v aggressive w/ the 3DS a large user base seems p vital to them

the success of the handheld division has to be of p strategic importance to the company overall as well, theyre not sony, & getting the 3DS into consumers hands is the first step so

I dunno, seems like a dying platform. I was at toys r us over the weekend and they were selling 3ds games buy 1 get 1 free, meanwhile the equivalent DS games were still selling fullprice.

interestingly enough, there have been a couple of tech sites reporting today that Apple's going to be making both the iPad & iPhone a lot cheaper starting later this year, so it's certainly possible Nintendo might cutting prices to cut those moves off at the knees rather than to go hard against the Vita. I do know that every time Nintendo's talked about iOS & Android games in the past they've always talked about them as completely different sectors of the market that they don't see as releasing a competing product (e.g. "They're making games you can buy for a dollar, we're making ~Entertainment Classics~ like Mario and Zelda games which people don't dispose of so easily"), so if this move is going after those games then it's a pretty striking about-face for them. of course, their revenue's down by more than half from last year - maybe they've just been dickslapped out of complacency w/r/t the gaming market. I personally still think it's a move against the Vita since everyone walked out of E3 talking about how great a value it is at $250 especially in comparision to what you get at that same price point with the 3DS, though.

I really can't wait to read what Malstrom has to say about this; he's been shitting all over the 3DS as something the market's going to reject since forever ago.

And we were wearing a lot of athletic shorts. (jamescobo), Thursday, 28 July 2011 20:19 (twelve years ago) link

this sucks donkey balls. "sorry you wasted seventy bucks - here, have some ROMs!"

Bit disappointing to see tech companies work their arses off to convince us that software is a commodity and copying is theft, and then every time there's a sign of trouble they give them away because it's the cheap way out.

xxpost +1 for his writing being the opposite of great but I dunno, I don't mind repackaged theory if it makes sense. I also don't really think he's saying that games were better back in the day so much as that Nintendo's biggest success stories all involve them making ballsy moves to differentiate themselves from their competition; whenever Nintendo's M.O. is to follow industry trends but (a) make them technologically superior in some way and (b) give them that ~~~~NINTENDO TOUCH~~~~, they invariably shit their pants in front of the entire market.

And we were wearing a lot of athletic shorts. (jamescobo), Friday, 29 July 2011 19:45 (twelve years ago) link

Virtual Boy was a ballsy move and a disaster.
SNES followed market trends & was a success.

both 3DS & Vita are going to struggle long term as they fight over a niche audience. gonna get ugly.

zappi, Friday, 29 July 2011 20:09 (twelve years ago) link

yeah fair enough his explicit argument is not that the games themselves were better but that console retail packages were better...

but i think its stupid to compare retail strategies btw a time when the industry was in its infancy and when theres a mature market for the product, also i think consumers perception of value is different now than it was in 85 but im sure any co. could move more units w/ a more attractive out-of-the-box package, but theres a trade-off there too. youd also have to convince retailers, who make most of their money on peripherals (partic. 3rd party peripherals), that they should still essentially take a loss on console sales by packaging fifty controllers and a power pad in box.

id also like to know what finance textbooks specifically cite 2012 as difficult economic year (intro to mayan finance?) & i think his grasp of recession-spending patterns is... uneducated? if anything i think the real problem (as above) w/ the 3DS isnt the handheld price but the software price which he spends v. little time on, or on the underlying factors that drive development costs (and hence retail price for games) upwards.

his argument dismissing the influence of inflation is also p lol

· — · · · — — — · — — · (Lamp), Friday, 29 July 2011 20:16 (twelve years ago) link

I see what you're getting at but the counter-argument is Wii Sports. Wii + Wii Sports may not have been as generous an offering as NES + SMB/Duck Hunt/Track & Field + 2 controllers + light gun + power pad, but it's still a clear concession to out-of-the-box playability and it's safe to say it was pretty instrumental to helping the Wii catch on. Malstrom's point is that these days console manufacturers don't even try to hook you up - their entire sales pitch is CHECK OUT THIS THING - BETCHA CAN'T WAIT TO BUY IT AND THEN SPEND SOME MORE MONEY IN ORDER TO HAVE ANY FUN WITH IT, and exigencies of the industry or not I agree with him that that kinda sucks.

it's also worth noting that at launch the 3DS actually bent over backwards trying to provide entertainment options which don't require a cart (Face Raiders, Find Mii, the puzzle-piece swapping, the music player) but none of them took off because the games were all shallow & lazy as shit and only ever succeeded in spite of themselves (and I like all those games! just couldn't in good conscience ever endorse anyone buying the system just to play them). kinda striking to see the company which recognized SMB and Wii Sports as killer apps throw out the equivalent of Carl Lewis' first pitch.

youd also have to convince retailers, who make most of their money on peripherals (partic. 3rd party peripherals), that they should still essentially take a loss on console sales by packaging fifty controllers and a power pad in box.

(a) retailers make their money on used games, which is why you can even get them at Best Buy now
(b) retailers made money hand over fist off those big ass Guitar Hero games back in the day

I'd bet most prospective 3DS shoppers don't even know about Face Raiders etc. (it's certainly not being demoed at Best Buy/Gamestop). I can't help but agree that the "out of the box" playability did help the Wii a lot, people were able to play it and try it much more easily than say, this Xbox 360 I just got which came with one controller and a 15 minute demo of Modern Warfare 2.

The original DS had a pretty boring line-up too, but it had no competition for those 6 months or so it took to get some decent games out.

The retail strategy thing seems loaded with assumptions. It was the system price that stopped me from buying one at launch (the game prices didn't help). If they had launched at $180, they'd already have my money. Now that Vita is on the way and I need a new iPod Touch, I don't even know if I'll bother at this price.

Does make me wonder though - did Carnival Games sell better than Super Mario Galaxy?

Nhex, Saturday, 30 July 2011 14:12 (twelve years ago) link

did Carnival Games sell better than Super Mario Galaxy?

nope; it sold around 7 million copies compared to ~9 mil for SMG1. it's ahead of SMG2 (~6 mil sold) right now though. Wii Play, however, has sold like 28 million copies, mostly to folks who needed a second wiimote and figured they might as well get a game with it too.

in other news, Wal-Mart is apparently going to start selling the 3DS at the new price starting on the 9th, which gives you a few days to snag one for cheap AND register so's you can get 20 ROMs. Devil Survivor Overclocked is supposed to be out later this month too, although its release date has been bumped like three times already so who knows.

It's also now been sufficiently long since I played it last, let alone completed it last, that I'm really enjoying it.

Got SFIV on the way, then I think it's really only Steel Diver (kinda) and Pilotwings that I'm interested in until some more stuff drops, Cave Story 3D in particular, as long as they don't charge silly money.

First batch of free games just went up. This is what happens:

- you read the notification that tells you how to download the games
- you have to write down or memorise the instructions which are (I might have the names wrong but I don't care):

1. open the eshop
2. tap "settings / other" in the menu thing
3. open "titles you've downloaded"
4. keep tapping down until you get to the first free game
5. tap "re-download"
6. download the game
7. the system takes you back to step 2 and you have to do THE WHOLE THING 10 MORE TIMES

Right at the very bottom of the free games there's a thing called "Nintendo 3DS Ambassador Certificate". It's five times bigger than any of the games because it's a video. This is what's in the video: four minutes of SIDE-SCROLLING TEXT, with REALLY BAD CHEAP MUZAK, that tells you HOW TO DOWNLOAD ALL THE GAMES YOU HAVE JUST DOWNLOADED. It's four minutes because after 30 seconds IT DOES IT ALL AGAIN IN LIKE FIFTY DIFFERENT LANGUAGES.

I hope a hoos reads and enjoys this because it is seriously THE STUPIDEST THING I HAVE EVER SEEN, EVER, including PT Cruisers and wars.

I ran all the way back to this thread (ilx in general!) in flapping excitement as I see there is a 999: 9 hours, 9 persons 9 doors sequel coming to the 3DS!

I knooooow that 999 was a game where you essentially made four choices and played some slightly rub puzzles (and saved the world with a sudoku hurrah!), but I flipping loved the story with all its ridiculous twists, and it was full of excellent jokes so A+ on the old localisation thing. I hope it will be the same with the localisation for the sequel! Which will happen! And I will look forward to playing! Heck yes! (etc etc will that do, please localise it o decision makers).

No idea where the Phoenix Wright/Layton game is (my 3ds is sitting at home whilst I am playing pokemon emerald on a DS phat - games?! please?!). Oh, I lie, I play Mario Picross on it...

That analogue bolt-on was confirmed. By Nintendo. As a first-party peripheral. I don't even.

Autumn Almanac, Tuesday, 13 September 2011 10:38 (twelve years ago) link

Thankfully. Launching it with a single stick was laughable. Now any genre can conceivably be played with optimal controls.

abcfsk, Tuesday, 13 September 2011 10:43 (twelve years ago) link

I like the idea of a 2nd stick - still slightly baffled how they could miss the last ~7 years of people saying how shit it was that the PSP had only one analog stick yet think that was OK, but it'll be a welcome addition I'm sure, giving better flexibility as to what games could be put on the system. Can't say I care for the aesthetic, but I also don't care about the aesthetic that much either, especially if it makes the DS more comfortable. Can't believe how much the swap from DS Phat to 3DS is crippling my mitts.

In other news, "Four Swords coming in September" apparently means 28th of September. Jerks.

I just played Mario Kart 7 online for the first time. Unfortunately you can't just race against people on your friends list + bots, you and friends have to race against other randoms from around the world. In a way it's more interesting cos other players are more brutal than bots (they'll bash you out of the way without hesitation) but not the greatest if you just want to have a private game with someone. Booo.

You can switch between innie and outtie 3D on Mario 3D Land - maybe try switching? I have the 3d effect fairly low - maybe about 1/3 of the way, as I find that's the best look. Love being able to judge whether a long jump will actually take me far enough to stomp a goomba, with the extra perspective it gives.

As it stands, the XL is just a larger 3DS, nothing more. And it is a lot larger - try and see one IRL, it's huge, and pushes the boundaries of acceptable size for a portable system IMO. Unless you have really bad eyesight, save £40-50 and get the regular 3DS.

zappi, Friday, 24 August 2012 10:44 (eleven years ago) link

im thinking of grabbing one.. what are some of the best games for the system? i'm looking at super mario 3d land, pushmo, ocarina of time, and maybe theatrhythm

diamonddave85, Friday, 24 August 2012 15:32 (eleven years ago) link

I definitely want to upgrade to a 3DSXL. For me, the regular 3DS is way too small. After picking up a DSiXL a few years back, I can't play on those tiny screens anymore - it feels like shit. Admittedly, I only play my portable consoles at home or in a hotel room when on the road, so portability isn't really a consideration. I'm trying to hold out until we get a better color here in the US as I don't really want a blue or red one.

But one of the problems with the 3DS remains that the games library is still really lacking after a year and a half. I mean, I sort of love the Mario stuff (kart, land), but it's not exciting the way it once might have been - not innovative enough - too many formulaic releases in too few years. I still buy and play regular DS games (such an amazing library) a lot more than any game that has been released for the 3DS. And the cross platform stuff, like FIFA, is always going to be better on VITA with the higher resolution screen, multi-touch and the second stick. The other main problem is that 3D pretty much sucks (I almost always have just switched that off).

JCL, Friday, 24 August 2012 16:16 (eleven years ago) link

xp
yeh those are solid choices, Kart 7 is prob the best in the series due to the online & lack of snaking
one big plus of the XL i forgot to mention is it makes the 1-to-1 pixel versions of DS/GBA/GB games playable, as the reg 3DS versions feel like the screen sizes are as big as postage stamps

zappi, Friday, 24 August 2012 16:19 (eleven years ago) link

The main reason I want to upgrade to the XL is to play the ambassador games on a decent sized screen.

Essential 3DS games list...

Mario Kart 7
Super Mario 3D Land
VVVVVV

JCL, Friday, 24 August 2012 16:24 (eleven years ago) link

the game library has been lacking in the west though, localizations are taking a long time to trickle through - so many games out in Japan that i want to play that have no western release yet. region locking was such a poor decision ugh.

zappi, Friday, 24 August 2012 16:25 (eleven years ago) link

re: VVVVVV, i've played the PC version already.. is it a pretty straight port?

diamonddave85, Friday, 24 August 2012 16:28 (eleven years ago) link

VVVVVV is a straight port (minus the level editor, but does come with a bunch of bonus levels). I also have it on PC, but for me it was easier on 3DS (I disliked using the arrow keys and spacebar controls, which always felt a little laggy on my PC for some reason). A normal person doesn't need both versions though.

JCL, Friday, 24 August 2012 16:35 (eleven years ago) link

super mario 3d land is excellent. new super mario brothers 2 is way better than internet people would have you believe.

kid icarus would be flat out astonishing except for the cruelly twisted control system.

adam, Friday, 24 August 2012 16:55 (eleven years ago) link

Yeah I got the XL. If you're thinking of getting a 3DS, XL is the only way - seriously. System size really isn't an issue since we're not dorks who put these things in our actual pockets, but the size of the screen is. The original screen was just too small too appreciate the vast 3D games ala Ocarina, and 3DLand looks AMAZING on the screen. Seriously such a visually pleasing game and maybe the best Mario ever made..? NSMB2 is lacking in challenge and challenging creativity, though. Hoping for another 'Land'.

Also if Monster Hunter ever gets localized a smaller screen would be blasphemous.

tried for first time both 3DS and 3DSxl. For me XL seems miles better, in fact the normal 3DS seemed almost too tiny.

Very impressed with the 3D effect, although I was trying this in store and so the thing was nailed down which meant a very steady view. I don't know how well it would look if it was mobile and moving around a lot.

Do all normal 3DS titles work for the XL then?

Playing the Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate demo on my 3DS XL this weekend. Get it there or on the Wii U.

Controls really well with the new "monster targeting" camera (not a lock on). 2nd joystick add-on which I bought is not supported by demo and an unfriendly "the circle pad pro is not supported by this software" message greets you without letting customers know the final game does. That's typical - the weapons aren't explained unless you go into the digital menu, you're given a shorter time limit than in the real game and one of the two missions is the notorious asshole Plesioth, dubbed the most annoying monster in the series for his 'hip checks'. No noob will have a good time with him for a while.

http://www.extagia.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/11/Monster-Hunter-3-Ultimate-Plesioth.jpg

Anyway it looks gorgeous on the handheld. A good step up from the Wii version.

I'm curious how well this new release does here. I think some markets in Europe are prepped for it like the particular German market. I hope the localization of MH4 is already decided on regardless of sales because it looks crazy.

Quite a few people seem head over heels about the EO series. What's its big draw?

abcfsk, Saturday, 23 February 2013 13:27 (eleven years ago) link

its just a really really hard old school dungeon crawler, you draw the layout of each floor of the dungeon on the lower screen as you progress. super niche but if you are a fan of the genre its one of the best. EO2 & EO3 never made it to EU so expectations were low - there is the possibility that it will be digital only, but i can live with that.

I tried the MH3 demo and either I totally didn't get it, or the gameplay in that series can't have changed since, like, PS1 days. It felt massively simplistic and clunky and I had HUGE 3D CAMERA ISSUES for the first time in years etc.

JimD, Thursday, 4 April 2013 15:08 (eleven years ago) link

ah yeh, the demo doesn't really give the best impression. The controls are little clunky and take a little getting used to, but once you get the hang of them it becomes second nature. i get round the 3D camera issues by the power of Frankenstick.

<i>i know MH3U on 3ds was massively popular in japan, were they all using circle pad pros or just making due with the bottom screen camera controls?

― diamonddave85</i>

I bought a cpp for this game and I've only used it once and discarded it so far, 30 hours in. The new target camera makes it almost obsolete for land battle. Underwater there are still times where you'd like a second stick. So no, you don't really use the touch camera except when navigating the map, where it works pretty decently.

Monster Hunter is definitely a portable series for me. The series is 80% of my game life but I'v been so busy i haven't really gotten deep into Ultimate yet. Enjoy most of the changes, though.

Donkey Kong Country Returns is a masterpiece. Truly exceptional level design both from a gameplay perspective and a visual one. Puts the NSMB series to such shame I'm not sure I can even hold on to the positive things I've said about certain entries. Ironically, as a 2D platformer it captures many of the strenghts of the Galaxy-games that NSMB never were close to: Mainly making each level a world of its own, with new mechanics, skills to master, visual treats and delicious details.

I will say this is (was, 3 years ago) a return to Retro making GOAT contenders. Don't know why I didn't buy it back on the Wii but sure makes playing the 3DS version now even sweeter.

For sure one of the best 2d platformers of all time.

Tempted to get an XL for $150 this weekend.. or the new Zelda and M&L editions at regular price. Is it still a bad idea?

Nhex, Friday, 22 November 2013 19:22 (ten years ago) link

Personally 3DS has been killing it software-wise this year, bought a lot of games and almost all have been brilliant (fuck NSMB2 though). Most of the special editions come with a download code or the game preloaded rather than a physical game, which is a bit of a problem as Nintendo refuse to set up an account system. I'd wait for Black Friday deals on an XL and buy the physical games that you want rather than deal with their crazy digital strategy.

( X '____' )/ (zappi), Friday, 22 November 2013 20:55 (ten years ago) link

i made the mistake of early adopting and buying a fresh off the line 1st edition and that fucking thing has never felt right in my hands. Way too sharp edges and bad ergonomics; can't hold it for more than twenty minutes. Will getting an xl or 2ds solve this problem?

or maybe i should get a new hobby

XL feels much much better ergonomically, ymmv so try one out in a shop I guess? Haven't tried a 2DS yet.

NI, Monday, 16 December 2013 22:26 (ten years ago) link

3DS has much less software than DS, but the quality is just as good if not better. Most of the shovelware manufacturers have moved over to iOS, but big Japanese publishers (Square, Capcom) are beginning to invest heavily in mobile as well. Well-known brands (Mario, Zelda etc) get physical & digital releases, whereas more niche games (e.g. Phoenix Wright) are starting to get a digital only release in the West. Newer IPs and indie games also get a cheaper digital only release, even Nintendo have wised up to this (e.g. Pushmo/Pullblox, Harmoknight, Dillon). Virtual Console has been pretty lackluster so far, although Sega have been putting out a lot of arcade/genesis ports in the past few weeks including the amazing Galaxy Force II.
lots of deals on 3DS hardware around atm, don't know how much cheaper 2nd hand would be tbh. if you can, try a 3DS and an XL out for ergonomics first, some people like one and hate the other (for me XL is a vast improvement).

i like the sound of 3d, just for the weirdness (imagine it being like those 90s magic eye posters?). had a quick go on my 6 yr old nephews today but only on this crappy teenage mutant ninja turtles game - for some reason he thought i'd rather play that than mario or anything actually good. also didn't get to see 3d capabilities because it needs a pin number to access and he doesn't know it, just "press all the buttons til it works."

what are the standout games for it? paper mario sounds decent. are there any new laytons/hatworthses?

NI, Tuesday, 17 December 2013 00:27 (ten years ago) link

tbh i hardly use the 3D
2 new Laytons out already & the Layton/Phoenix Wright crossover sometime in 2014
Mario 3Dland v good, i thought NSMB2 was boring tho.
new Zelda best one since Wind Waker imo, no tutorials or annoying helper, can explore & tackle dungeons in pretty much any order.
i mainly play RPGs, Atlus games have been excellent & Squares Bravely Default is basically a modern FFV/FFVI so far (about 5 hours in)

NI, Tuesday, 17 December 2013 20:08 (ten years ago) link

eh ymmv, i think the 3D is kinda pointless and no game really needs it as such
for me 3DS is an upgraded DS with less overall software, like Vita is a fancy PSP with (a lot) less software

Personally I love the 3d but I know I'm very much in the minority. And I've been a sucker for any artificial 3d ever since my first viewmaster.

JimD, Tuesday, 17 December 2013 23:58 (ten years ago) link

ooh jimd saying what i want to hear, what do you reckon are the killer 3d games?

NI, Wednesday, 18 December 2013 02:35 (ten years ago) link

Mario 3D Land, Zelda OoT, Pilotwings, Luigi's mansion. And the built in video player which auto-downloads a new 3d video clip every few days is often great too, though the fact you can't choose to permanently keep any of them is frustrating sometimes.

JimD, Wednesday, 18 December 2013 07:22 (ten years ago) link

Oh and Mariokart.

JimD, Wednesday, 18 December 2013 13:15 (ten years ago) link

Bravely Default is sooooo good, every part of it is so well thought out e.g. tapping on the right of dpad during a battle speeds it up, tap again it goes even faster with a >> sign like you are fastforwarding through a video. tap left to slow down or pause ||. little conveniences like this really add to the experience.
one of those Directs in 30 mins btw, hoping for an EU SMT4 date to be finally announced :/

Question: so should I go out and get a 32GB SDHC card right now? I think my system comes with M&L pre-installed, but I don't know if it's on the system memory or the included card yet. Am I going to have to go through any weird transfer hassles?

Nhex, Friday, 20 December 2013 16:17 (ten years ago) link

if you intend to buy full games digitally then yes buy a 32GB card. transferring from one SD card to the other on the same machine is just copy & paste via yr PC. make sure you create a NNID & link to Club Nintendo before buying any games though.

( X '____' )/ (zappi), Friday, 20 December 2013 16:27 (ten years ago) link

thanks, will do. i was afraid that would be some kind of DRM-restriction in transferring stuff to a new card, assuming I pick one up in a few weeks. I'll definitely be picking up some of the DSiWare and download-exclusive stuff like Phoenix Wright

Nhex, Friday, 20 December 2013 16:32 (ten years ago) link

the only restriction is the NNID being tied to the hardware, so you can't sign in on someone else's 3DS. you can transfer the lot between machines, but if your 3DS gets lost/stolen you have to call them up to unbind your NNID so you can bind it to a new machine & get your digital games back - at least that's the theory, hope i never have to find out :/

( X '____' )/ (zappi), Friday, 20 December 2013 16:44 (ten years ago) link

so i can't transfer the games between 3DS systems, but I can backup my card and just recopy the files over as long as I dont lose my original system?

Nhex, Friday, 20 December 2013 16:53 (ten years ago) link

you can transfer everything in one lot to another system, which wipes the original system.
but yes keep a backup of your cards contents on your PC, also best to take a note of the 3DS serial number!

just finished Bravely Default, much better than any recent Final Fantasy but without going into spoilers i have some serious reservations how they handled the second half of the game. still, a lot of positives (battle & job systems, all the customization while still keeping a sense of balance, a real sense of challenge!), hopefully they structure the next game a bit better.

The amount of time I spent dicking around with the Repton 3 level editor probably, well it probably doesn't rival the amount of time I've spent dicking around on ILX, but you get the idea. I have a clear memory of 14 year old snoball sitting indoors on a sunny summer's day, making Repton 3 levels with custom sprites etc. instead of going outside and hanging with my friends. Because I had no friends. But that's beside the point.

abcfsk, Monday, 5 May 2014 16:12 (nine years ago) link

Is it generic Mario Golf (i.e. the GameCube/Wii versions) or is it the RPG-style version Mario Golf (the old GBA game)?

Nhex, Monday, 5 May 2014 16:26 (nine years ago) link

I loved the RPG style Mario Golf on the GBC & GBA. I would totally buy the new one if it's in that style.

treefell, Monday, 5 May 2014 16:37 (nine years ago) link

I was thinking about getting that but then Everybody's Golf on Vita turned out to be one of this month's PS+ games. It's by the same people and is apparently pretty much the same game minus the nintendo skin.

JimD, Monday, 5 May 2014 16:42 (nine years ago) link

i've been playing it and it's been fun so far with loads of content. basic game has 4 more normal 18 hole courses and 6 more wacky 9 hole courses, more 18 holers available via DLC. its part typical Mario Golf (GC/Wii), part kind-of-rpg mode where you use the castle clubhouse as your Mii and play against others online while buying equipment to change basic stats (e.g. you might buy a club that lengthens your range but tightens the sweetspot of the hit mechanic). you can compete with other people thru regular tournaments you either set up yourselves as a community or ones that Nintendo run (you can also just search thru a list of ones that people have set up). the Nintendo run tournaments give you equipment for entering (e.g. the one at the moment gives a full set of NES themed clothes) and are both regional and worldwide, have a set date that they finish on & leaderboards. when you play online you see the ghosts of other peoples balls flying around the place. basically the online modes are really well done.
only annoyance so far is the inability to switch off voices, hearing Mario way "wahoo" every 10 seconds drives me up the wall so i'm playing it with the sound off already :/

( X '____' )/ (zappi), Monday, 5 May 2014 16:52 (nine years ago) link

abcfsk, Monday, 5 May 2014 19:23 (nine years ago) link

Hotshots is a perfectly good golf game, prefer the PSP version to the Vita game and not a big fan of the overall visual aesthetic personally but they are both v solid, if you want a golf game to play around with then a free PS+ HSG works fine.

I bought a 3DS XL two days ago. I have been glued to Fire Emblem and A Link Between Worlds. This Zelda instalment is so delightful that I actually feel like savouring it, whereas I know the FE is going to take about 50 hours so I'm willing to keep playing.

On that note, why is Fire Emblem so punishingly difficult? Anyone care to chat about this game with me in a general, spoiler-free way? I'm not really looking for strategies or anything, more just a feeling of commiseration with anyone else who has been as horrified and fascinated by this game as I am.

fields of salmon, Tuesday, 24 June 2014 00:29 (nine years ago) link

Can I also just mention the superb soundtrack in both games I happened to pick up for my maiden voyage into 3DS land? Fire Emblem in particular...

fields of salmon, Tuesday, 24 June 2014 00:35 (nine years ago) link

My fav game of 2013! I thought the difficulty was balanced just right, but then I like them on the difficult side. Are you playing with permanent death on or off?
Also worth noting that Ubisoft are having an eshop summer sale - most of their 3DS games are terrible but the diamond in the rough is Shadow Wars for $7.50. Shadow Wars is a SRPG and plays like Fire Emblem with guns - the story and characters are daft but the gameplay and map design are excellent, having been overseen by Julian Glossop of XCOM fame.

( X '____' )/ (zappi), Tuesday, 24 June 2014 00:43 (nine years ago) link

I bought a 3DS last week with those two games also, along with Animal Crossing and Mario Kart 7. Zelda is absolutely great. I whipped through it pretty fast. It was probably the most fun I've had with a Zelda game since Wind Waker.

Fire Emblem seems great, but I really don't know how to play it. It ramps up the complexity pretty quickly. I need to watch some videos and see how people play this game. I'm determined not to lose any characters.

For soundtracks, Animal Crossing is very pleasant after 11 pm.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xbjbGNa-7eE

jmm, Tuesday, 24 June 2014 00:48 (nine years ago) link

@zappi: thanks for the tip re: Shadow Wars. It looks very good, but I won't use this sale because I'm a physical media holdout. But I will buy a boxed version of this because it does look good. In Fire Emblem I have turned permanent death off because the game contains no convenient way to reload from a save without quitting and relaunching (something that caused me to give up on the Wii one a few years ago).

@jmm: That Animal Crossing thing sounds great. When you said it is "pleasant after 11pm" I was assuming you were euphemistically referring to the game being well-suited to a few beers and some cannabis. On that note, I must admit I'm hesitant to purchase an Animal Crossing game as I feel slightly weird being a male in my thirties playing games that were probably intended for 11-year-old Japanese girls... Now that I'm back in the Nintendosphere I'll probably have to deal with this a fair bit. But yeah, that music is awesome.

fields of salmon, Tuesday, 24 June 2014 01:12 (nine years ago) link

there is a quick reload option that they don't tell you about (lol), i will have to google it though - holding L+R and Start apparently

It's an excellent localization, you're right, but thankfully it localizes rather than americanizes. There's still something awkwardly Japanese about it, which I love. And again, the soundtrack is just incredible.

Nhex, Monday, 21 July 2014 16:17 (nine years ago) link

Currently playing Bravely Default, about ten-fifteen hours in.

Good things:

- Appreciate the difficulty, even early battles are by no means a hold-down-the-X button walk in the park
- Difficulty is largely well-calibrated as you move into new areas. I get cocky, then get my ass kicked, which is how RPGs ought to work
- Job selection mechanic recalls some of my favourite games. Allows a pleasing level of tinkering, inventory faffing and general customization—both for the game as a whole and for individual bosses or areas
- Impressively ugly and threatening monsters
- Beautiful hand-drawn towns that are worth turning on the 3D for
- Dungeon design suits the handheld scenario (individual floors are easy to clear within one session, which sidesteps Why Am I Here? syndrome)

Not as good things:

- Plot is a bit too 80s (defeat the four crystals or whatever), but with layers of tedious innuendo
- Prefer JRPG plots that are more "mature" (ie. incomprehensible political maneuvering between kingdoms)
- Plays better with the sound off (voice acting is unnecessary and overwrought, music is not varied or sophisticated enough—my benchmark for RPG soundtrack is now Fire Emblem: Awakening, which was the last game I played)
- Wailing electric guitar in battle music (big turn off where RPGs are concerned)
- Bosses have more HP than cunning
- Sexist, puerile (at best) representation of female characters. Would young Japanese males (presumably the original target for the game) really care if their video games didn't contain scantily-clad adolescents? Something tells me not much is being gained by Japanese publishers here, while this is actually hurting sales and credibility of the genre in the west more than anyone realizes.

fields of salmon, Monday, 21 July 2014 17:25 (nine years ago) link

Oh they realize it - they're actually slightly more covered up in the NA version

Nhex, Monday, 21 July 2014 17:49 (nine years ago) link

I read that. They toned it down, but then went and put some really embarrassing cover art on it. At least the EU release cover had the party posed in a strong and defiant way, with Agnès in the lead instead of just looking on in a servile way like some Japanese games (as recent examples, the "Tales of..." series and the "Rune Factory" series routinely have the most abysmally dopey cover art).

Actually, based on the EU cover art and the name, I didn't realize Ringabel is male—his hairstyle rather resembles La Roux's Elly Jackson—and thought maybe the Japanese are starting to get it. Also there are some strong, interesting female characters in the Fire Emblem game like the bookish ice queen Miriel and the courageous tomboy Sully. Based on what I've played of Bravely Default so far (no spoilers), I'm not holding out hope for Ringabel's amnesia to extend to some sort of, uh, gender amnesia, but that would be a pretty cool plot twist based on the overdetermination of his innuendo.

Come to think of it, based on how much I loved the Fire Emblem game, I think I finally get this whole "fanservice" thing. I adored Miriel and Sully immediately and married them off promptly to Virion and Stahl respectively—two of my sturdiest and most reliable henchmen—whereas blonde doe-eyed Lissa was eventually paired off with the Guy Fieri of Fire Emblem, the hapless and similarly blonde Vaike. If this is "fanservice" I dig it, and Fire Emblem has done ridiculously well in North America possibly in part because it hasn't grossed out North Americans.

I think the developers of the Bravely Default series should probably take note. BD succeeded in North America based on hype, mechanics, and a general starvation for JRPGs. But if they want to excel, they'll deal with some of the representational issues head-on. (They won't, I know.)

So... should I play Shin Megami Tensei IV next? Based on the video reviews I've seen, that seems like a morbidly sexless dungeon crawl that couldn't possibly offend North Americans. Right?

fields of salmon, Monday, 21 July 2014 22:25 (nine years ago) link

funny you should mention that, was just thinking the other day what would happen if the Christian Right in the US somehow stumbled upon SMT - the outrage would be pretty hilarious

( X '____' )/ (zappi), Monday, 21 July 2014 23:57 (nine years ago) link

Would I like SMT IV?

fields of salmon, Tuesday, 22 July 2014 02:34 (nine years ago) link

Have you played a SMT game before? There's a lot of fun to be had if you like seriousbusiness dungeon crawlers with minimal plot. Choices you make during the game put you on one of three endgames, two of these are heavily signposted though (I deliberately chose the Chaos ending and was not disappointed!). There is no "fan service" that I can remember. The only real complaints I would have about it were the balance felt off, the tutorial rips your head off but the game gets easier as it goes on - and it expects you to have some familiarity with how Tokyo is laid out, I found myself looking up real maps at the beginning when someone said "go to Shibuya" so I knew to head East or whatever.
The soundtrack is excellent, loved running around post apocalyptic Tokyo fighting demons while listening to synth Krautrock http://youtu.be/SG_gB4kb2oA

"New 3DS"; huh?

Well my xl screen has been mishandled and suffered from it so I'll prob get this next year when MH4U comes out. I mean.. I will definitely get it because that's how I am, but retiring my frankenstick for a new MH seems like a good enough reason.

The exclusive game thing is weird because obviously the audience will be vastly smaller than for regular 3ds games. With the n64 expansion pack at least you could upgrade to play Perfect Dark.

On the other hand it is probably a sound way to push the 3DS series to signficantly bigger sales in total. I'm guessing a handheld successor is a ways off, 2016 holiday maybe, and they need some action.

Exclusives like Xenoblade aside they say upcoming 3ds games may have improved graphics on the new system.

abcfsk, Saturday, 30 August 2014 16:38 (nine years ago) link

i get the idea of games running better on the iterated device, but exclusive games seems silly, will probably just be a few quick ports though. Xenoblade looked like it ran terribly, and bang goes any hope for an HD version :(
interesting that the control layout now almost exactly mirrors the WiiU gamepad, wonder if you'll be able to use the new 3DS as a WiiU controller?
would not be surprised if they start selling SNES & GBA games exclusively on the new 3DS, those coloured buttons must be there for some reason!

Now sitting sealed on my desk. Waiting for the weekend. Also haven't been sober enough to play a JRPG for the past couple of days.

addicted to Fantasy Life at the moment. I saw someone call it "a cute Skyrim" which is funny but not totally wrong. It feels a bit like Animal Crossing but with a massive actual gamey game added in - a simple action RPG like Rune Factory or Ys, but with jobs, quests, equipment etc and a main storyline you can dip in and out of.

( X '____' )/ (zappi), Wednesday, 8 October 2014 10:02 (nine years ago) link

Very happy with my purchase of SMT IV. For some reason I thought it had just come out (August 2014 instead of August 2013) so was initially feeling baffled at a) how hard it was to find, and b) why nobody was talking about it.

This is absolutely great stuff about 6-7 hours in. It's one of the most batshit game world concepts I think I've ever played... App Store? Medieval France-Japan? A weird sky tunnel that goes from Medieval France-Japan to a weird contemporary Tokyo? I'm also really enjoying how stupid, funny, and plain weird some of the demons are. At some point I feel I'm gonna go up against a tea kettle with wings and a bag of goldfish crackers. (Of course ending up in a ruthless total party kill that causes me to hurl verbal abuse at my 3DS. Goldfish crackers smirks.)

The dialogue is weirdly stilted. "Hey, do you know about demons? I hear there are demons under the city, do you want to find these demons?" But actually I find this is adding to the creepy, hallucinogenic experience.

SMT IV is still great 20–25 hours in. I've been doing side quests and occasionally getting stuck in the main story. One of the great things about this game is how it refuses to hold your hand with regard to progression through the story quests. It feels very old school to have to remember dialogue with NPCs and not have a big blinking quest marker in your face at all times...

Well done, ATLUS! I had always shied away from this series, but I am now legitimately interested in Persona Q and I wish there was more information out there (in English) regarding the gameplay... If it's anything like SMT IV, they've won me over.

I started as an Alchemist in Fantasy Life and now I'm trying to decide what I want to add to that. With Alchemist I'm finding I can make money very quickly just buying materials through the artisan district and selling back potions. But taking on monsters in the field is a slog. Something like Hunter/Alchemist/Angler might be fun.

I started as Alchemist as well, then went Mercenary then Blacksmith. It's nice that they let you skip the tutorial for every Life after the first one, without any punishment. Reached the end credits at about 40 hours, but feels like I missed about half the content. Game is huge!

homebrew channel is going to be released in a couple of days for the 3DS, and about 12 hours ago the developer let everyone know that it exploits the game Cubic Ninja - yesterday you could buy it for £2.50 from CeX but the price has been going up all day, at the moment the cheapest copy on Amazon is £59.95! Apparently the game is needed to launch the homebrew every time so prices are not going to drop unless Ubisoft who published it reprint the game.

We don't have a Prof Layton or Ace Attorney thread anywhere do we? Has anyone played the Prof Layton/Ace Attorney crossover game?

I finished it over the weekend but I'm still trying to sort out how I rate it. Good things: integration of art/design styles into one world, interaction of characters from the various games, courtroom bits. Not as good things: Luke's voice acting (the accent is even worse in this game), way too easy puzzles, a bit too long (longest of any Layton game I've played), absolutely ridiculous storyline (I haven't played much Ace Attorney to know if they usually go for wacky storylines, but Layton games definitely do - and this one is more absurd/potholed than any of them).

salsa shark, Wednesday, 26 November 2014 22:10 (nine years ago) link

I'm playing that as we speak, I hadn't played any games from either series so it's pretty fun and different from what I'm used. On that note, I'm not sure I would play a tremendous amount more of either series, since my attention span seems to max out around 30 mins in this game.

About 20 hours into Persona Q. They did a really good job of fusing the Persona battle system into the Etrian setup, and there is a larger amount of puzzle solving than in either series which adds a lot to the dungeon crawling. Really enjoying it, the only downside is the dialog - groanworthy fanfic which goes on and on hammering the same one note jokes, hey let's pause halfway through this dungeon floor and listen to Chie talk about how much she likes meat ffs. Luckily you can hold down x and fast forward through this garbage.

Are any of the SMT games marked at 50% off in the eShop worth picking up? I was eyeing SMT4 and the Hackers one because yay cyberpunk but it seems very easy just to splurge on all of em.

Delbert Gravy (kingfish), Friday, 16 January 2015 08:17 (nine years ago) link

Soul Hackers feels very 90s in its design, I love it but they've not done much to make it accessible to modern audiences and some of its systems can seem quite opaque. Short for an Atlus game though, maybe 20-25 hours long? Very 90s idea of virtual reality, quite funny script at times.
SMT4 is a lot more friendly and has a great soundtrack, only problem I had with it was the balancing where it felt incredibly difficult at the start and too easy towards the end. Oh and the overworld map revealed after about 10 hours can be frustrating if you don't know it's real world counterpart (Tip: print one out so you know where you are supposed to go.) Script is a lot more serious except for the demon conversations which are hilarious.
People love DSO but I can't get into it, battle system felt so slow. Neat idea though.
EO4 is the most accessible EO game, these games are like crack to me and this is probably the best of them. There's a demo I think so try it out to see if it sinks its hooks into you.

I bought a used DSI XL offa Craigslist just to play DS games, and I'm glad I did. I didn't have a handheld after selling my DS lite in mid-07 during unemployment, so I've missed out on a lot of games. The shitty pixel magnification factor on the 3ds blurred everything out and made look horrible.

Now I just need to find a way to play fan-translated roms on there and run Fire Emblem 12.

Say, whatever happened to G-kit? He post here anymore?

Delbert Gravy (kingfish), Wednesday, 4 February 2015 22:37 (nine years ago) link

fwiw the pixel magnification can be turned off by holding select or something during startup

for fan translated roms etc you'll need a flashkart, i used a cyclods back in the day on my ds-lite and currently use a dstwo on my 3ds and would recommend them both

The monster design in MH4 is out of this world. I fought an acrobatic monkey-like creature swinging on vines and a creepy crawly web slinging spider clad in the remains of another monster, the Gypceros, which I'd also fought earlier. The fights are wildly unpredictable now, all sorts of verticality going on.

abcfsk, Sunday, 15 February 2015 12:34 (nine years ago) link

Yeh a few hours in to MH4, excellent stuff so far and improves on nearly every aspect of MH3. Initially wasn't sure about that new nub thing but now grudgingly appreciating it as a camera controller - can't see it being much use for anything that requires more accuracy tho.

xp New save point system? That sounds great. Last time I tried to do MM on the GameCube version, the long stretches were annoying me too, until the game kept fatally crashing on the same temple and I gave up altogether. Waiting for a sale.
I should really crack open Monster Hunter anyway....

Nhex, Tuesday, 3 March 2015 19:44 (nine years ago) link

"crack" being the operative word, I just looked at my play clock and it says I've played more than 50 hours of MH4 in the last couple of weeks 0_o

( X '____' )/ (zappi), Tuesday, 3 March 2015 19:49 (nine years ago) link

xp Yeah, you can do a hard save at the owl statue warp points now, as well as at a bunch of new non-warp save points. It makes the game a bit less tense, maybe, but if you ask me it's the tension of having to complete a goal within the 72-hour period that makes the game fun, not the frustration of having to do it in one go.

Another nice change is that the bank is now right next the warp point in Clock Town. And they modified the boss fights in some interesting ways. Not many big changes, but it all feels a little more streamlined.

jmm, Tuesday, 3 March 2015 20:23 (nine years ago) link

I'm sort of interested in MH4, but not 100% sure I'd like it. I love RPGs and I like the idea of a big, patient investment in gameplay but, depending on the game, I don't always like boss fights. And this game is just boss fight after boss fight. I lack dexterity and reflexes so some boss fights where you have to dodge, arcade-style, whatever the special attack is... Will I like this game?

fields of salmon, Wednesday, 4 March 2015 02:46 (nine years ago) link

Playing thru DQ9 lets me now see how Level-5 transitioned between the huge PS2 Dragons Quest game and something like Fantasy Life for the 3DS. Only the bones of the latter are built from MMOs, and not the standard DQ-type jrpg.

I had forgotten how much the DQ series had punny portmanteau, Pokemon-like monster names, or how much I really don't like Toriyama's single-note character design style

Delbert Gravy (kingfish), Thursday, 5 March 2015 13:16 (nine years ago) link

I don't care for the character design either, at least as far as people go (the monsters are great). But I forgive that because of the excellent puns and quality script localisation. I really liked DQ9.

two weeks pass...

been traveling a bunch lately so I've been getting a lot more 3DS time in.

- Shovel Knight: very good although I still feel like I'm absolutely shit at it. I love everything I see in it and badly want to see more but some parts are just such bullshit and the only way through them is to accept it
- Streetpass games: between Find Mii II, the puzzle piece exchange, Mii Force, the rock-paper-scissors one, and the haunted house one, I can count on these to take up at least 30 minutes of my time in a chunk (and more if I have a bunch of visitors). that's like Tetris levels of handheld game domination. my respect for these games continues to grow.
- Kirby Triple Deluxe: of course it's easy as shit, but the 3D is integrated really well and there's tons of stuff to do. I'm enjoying it more than any Kirby game released since Canvas Curse.
- Steel Empire: 3D port of a Genesis shmup which is just fun as balls. I am objectively terrible at these games but this one's quite approachable.
- Smash 3DS: this is still a quality game but if you have access to a WiiU get that version instead unless you absolutely demand the ability to play Smash whilst shitting.
- Theaterhythm: the best rhythm game I've played since EBA (or Ouendan 2, take your pick); I can't wait to beat it so that I can move on to the sequel, which I hear is even better.

also I got a New 3DS and while overall I love it to death, (1) I wish I could have gotten the SNES buttons and (2) I keep hitting the power button with my little finger while playing Shovel Knight.

did anyone else get the new Streetpass games (the fishing game and the zombie game)? they are both pretty good! in both cases there's tons of shit to do, fun integration of other people's Miis, and just generally fun to play - I probably like them less than Find Mii and the shooter game, but each one is at least as good as the haunted house one from the last batch of new games.

by comparison, the "Streetpass Plaza Upgrade" pack which is also available now is a stiflingly fetid pile of shit. $5 gets you another new (but really low-impact) game where you check off people's birthdays, a VIP room where you can keep all the best Miis you get (handy but eh), the ability to speed up the process by which people show up at the gate (EH), and some other stuff which is even less interesting. easily the most skippable Streetpass purchase since that stupid-ass flower-growing game.

in other news I got a Mii of Hank Hill which is just spot-on; the greeting is even "BOBBY!"

I've been looking for a Nintendo equivalent to the Trigger Grip PDP makes for Vita - basically a shell that improves the ergonomics of the system (albeit at the cost of portability). someone on SA pointed out that this dude on eBay is selling a highly-regarded model that's compatible with US New 3DSes (since we only got the LL size) for a pretty decent discount when you add in shipping from Japan. mine showed up earlier this week and I've been loving it; my only gripe with the design is that it doesn't have triggers on the top end so you still have to fiddle with the actual shoulder buttons, but it's comfortable as hell and I haven't accidentally powered off my system once since starting to use it (the location of the power button is my only gripe with the New 3DS). highly recommended if you find yourself playing for long stretches.

I am as restlessly snooty with my video game accessories as you might suspect but unless this thing bursts into flames it goes on the shortlist of my favorite 3DS add-ons, along with the official DSi XL styli (I seriously bought like eight of these things, tried plenty of knockoff pen-sized DS styli and after using this model no substitute will do) and Penguin game cases, the Waterfield Designs system case (if you are genuinely allergic to money), and the charging cradle.

sorry, the first link in the second paragraph of that post should go to this official page on Nintendo's webstore since I don't know where else you can get these specific styli anymore: https://store.nintendo.com/ng3/us/po/browse/productDetailColorSizePicker.jsp?categoryNav=true&navAction=jump&navCount=0&atg.multisite.remap=false&productId=prod10109&categoryId=cat10120

also I still really enjoy Kirby Triple Deluxe, I pick it up, play for a while, put it down for a few weeks, and can come back to it effortlessly. plus it makes GREAT use of 3D.

I got a digital copy of Mario Kart a while back and since I forgot to transfer my save before selling the cart I've been going back through the single player so that I can re-unlock all the shit. it really calls into high relief how ungodly awesome MK Wii U is because as much as I enjoyed blasting through MK3DS the first time, it feels tiny next to the Wii U version.

I think I like Shovel Knight better on Vita; cross-save is a godsend. if the Nintendo version had cross-save with the Wii U version I would probably love it most though; I found the second screen to be super useful.

also what is the consensus best 3DS flash cart? I still have my old 3DS even though I only play on my New 3DS, so I was considering never updating it again and getting a flashcart to play DS titles which never made it stateside and have fan translations. I know Soma Bringer is supposed to be awesome and if a fan translation of Rocket Slime 2 ever came out I would play the FUCK out of it - are there other fan-translated candidates worth considering?

The only game case I've got is the one they were selling through the stars catalogue a while back (seems to be gone now but they're probably still on ebay), it's just a regular 3ds case but with 9 slots on each side instead of one slot and a ton of wasted space.

Haven't ever considered a grip case or anything like that for the machine itself. Though given that I'm still on an original 3DS and can't play more than 20 mins before it starts to feel painful, I really should do.

Streets Of Rage 2 may be my favorite 3D classic released so far, although Gunstar Heroes comes out next month so it probably won't hold on to that title for too long

also my DSTwo showed up and I was pleased to discover that it works on my New 3DS (running on the most recent firmware revision). apparently Nintendo has given up on trying to rein in DS flash carts so that they can focus on 3DS models so all the good flashcarts are getting bought up, so thank u based ilx for helping me pull the trigger when I did. ultra stoked to play Retro Game Challenge 2 at last! and the Ni No Kuni DS game has been successfully translated into Spanish via fans, so there's got to be an English version coming at some point.

Is there anyway at this point to buy Fire Emblem Fates: Special Edition? I just want all three games on one cartridge, seems like the pre-orders sold out super fast everywhere. Eh, maybe it'll all be on sale digitally a year from now...

Nhex, Tuesday, 26 January 2016 15:27 (eight years ago) link

I thought the only single-cartridge version of the complete game was exclusive to the limited edition, the one whose preorder slips are currently going for fuck-off money on eBay. my guess is that I'll end up waiting for opened, played versions to start hitting the internet before picking one up; I too would rather keep track of one cartridge than keep track of three.

anyone get the new Mario & Luigi game? I'm holding off on tearing into it over a long flight this weekend, but I hear they fixed a bunch of annoying stuff about earlier iterations and god I have so much love for both of those series.

so I have a copy of Project X Zone 2 coming in the mail in the next few days; it sounds like a batshit Smash Bros-y take on the SRPG that integrates action elements and all kinds of crazy stuff. it's turn-based, but the phases play out like an action game. v excited for this one, suffice it to say. I still haven't ordered either Fire Emblem: Lots Of Crap To Buy or the new Bravely Default (still slogging away at the original whenever I get the chance) yet either. there are a lot of good games to play.

( X '____' )/ (zappi), Wednesday, 24 February 2016 11:36 (eight years ago) link

yes that is an excellent way to think of it. I am that fool who bought Codename S.T.E.A.M.; Steamworld Heist is everything that that game should have been in every possible way. more fluid, more fun, just better. if you like SRPGs you will like it.

actually as long as you're in the market for a SRPG, I will go ahead and seize the mic to urge you to consider Project X Zone 2. it is basically the SRPG version of Smash Bros, except for considerably less fun (although not as much as you might think - most games are less fun than Smash Bros, but this game is considerably more fun than most games due to SXZ2's hybrid action/turn-based combat scheme). the writers also get a lot of genuinely funny humor out of all the crossover enterprise. it's not a perfect game by any means but it's worth a look if you like the genre and feel like playing a finely-honed version of a very specific idea for a game. EG's review does a pretty good job of describing it, although obviously I endorse the game a little more urgently than they do:

http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/2016-02-22-project-x-zone-2-review

but yes, get Steamworld Heist

i kinda came to this conclusion after hoarding a dozen or so 3DS games that I never ended up playing over the last couple of years

Nhex, Thursday, 25 February 2016 23:00 (eight years ago) link

I could buy / download for free phone games I never play, or I could buy a few 3DS/console games per year that I know I will spend a lot of time with. Something about the structure of android/ios store and wide availability of all kinds of crap makes me not spend any time with the games I get. Partly because I sit down and make the decision to spend 10s of dollars on a 3DS game I will explore the game for what its worth. I spent 100s of hours on some of my 3DS games, don't see why they should be cheaper.

Nintendo's own games tend to hold their value no matter what platform they are released on. Having said that I've picked up most of my retail games for £5-10 each, you just need to keep an eye out for sales (e.g. thegamecollection.net in UK regularly put up good 3DS games for sub £10)

( X '____' )/ (zappi), Friday, 26 February 2016 16:07 (eight years ago) link

xp
Depends. Lots of rpg, tactical, rogue stuff I don't know well. Monster Hunter 4 U is an amazing, huge package and the easiest to get into of the series. Type of game you won't find on any other system (unless you buy older, inferior Monster Hunters).

If you didn't play it on the Wii, Donkey Kong Country Returns is one of the all time great 2d platformers.

abcfsk, Friday, 26 February 2016 16:58 (eight years ago) link

my vote for 3DS Starter Pack:

- all of the StreetPass games (some are bullshit but who cares; just spend $20 or whatever to get them all and find out which ones you like and which ones you don't. and the good ones are insidiously excellent.)
- Smash 3DS (duh)
- Mario Land 3D (also duh; I liked NSMB2 a bunch but this is the 3DS Mario game everyone ought to own)
- all the Zeldas - Link Between Worlds and the 3D remakes of Ocarina and LTTP (and Hyrule Warriors if you have 2 friends with 3DSeseseses to play with)
- Mario Kart (although the 3DS will feel palpably slight if you've played the world-conquering Wii U version)
- Mario Golf (best sports game on the system? PERHAPS)
- Final Fantasy: Theaterhythm Curtain Call (best rhythm game I've played since the saintly and unfuckwithable Elite Beat Agents)
- Bravely Default although you are completely allowed to abandon ship when (not if) it gets tedious
- DKCR if you want a hard-as-balls traditional platformer or Kirby Triple Deluxe if you want a platformer that grants anyone who plays it the satisfaction of beating it
- Kid Icarus: Uprising (although if you didn't have carpal tunnel before, here's the game that will give it to you)
- Fantasy Life (best single-player MMO that I've ever played, although if I'd sunk more time into MH4 I might feel differently)
- Fire Emblem: Awakening (I haven't played the new one yet but this was exactly the right FE for me; I hear the new one's even more refined though)
- Steamworld Heist (probably the closest SRPG to XCOM on the system)

and perhaps most importantly: get a whole bunch of pen-sized DSi XL styli; if you must interact with the touchscreen, this is the only way to do it comfortably for any significant duration of time. it baffles me that they took these out of production after the DSi got cycled out because they are perfect in every way. don't cheap out and go for a third-party pen stylus off Amazon, either; they feel chintzy and flimsy in every possible way, like the kind of shitty pen you accidentally steal from a hotel. the official ones are as close to Mont Blanc as we're likely going to get. spend the money, you'll be glad you did.

there are plenty of other lesser-but-still-excellent games I could wax rhapsodic all night about (Paper Jam! Xenoblade! Ghost Recon: Shadow Wars!), but the games listed above (AND THOSE STYLI) are the essentials IMO.

^ thank you so much for this!! once i need something else to play aside from this balls-hard fire emblem (why did i try to be a hardman and buy th tough version whyyyy~) and the pokemon picross i found for free on the store?, i will dip into that list frequently and with reckless abandon

Worth Taking from Little Kid (Will M.), Monday, 29 February 2016 15:44 (eight years ago) link

That definitely covers most of it but also, if you've got any affection at all for pokemon or animal crossing, X/Y and New Leaf are both near perfect renditions of their respective series.

Picross 3D 2 came out in Japan late last year so there's a decent chance that'll get a western release at some point too, if you're tempted to actually spend money on pokemon picross it's probably worth waiting for that instead.

Nhex, Monday, 29 February 2016 19:06 (eight years ago) link

I love them (or at least, the one I've been able to play so far), the logic's maybe a little simpler but they're really pleasingly tactile, I just really enjoy rotating the block and chipping away at it until you've got a recognisable little object left. Picross 3D is to sculpture as Rock Band is to music. Think I placed the original first in my P+C ballot the year it came out.

JimD, Monday, 29 February 2016 19:13 (eight years ago) link

BTW if anyone's thinking about picking up Fire Emblem Fates, I gotta repeat what I've been hearing around since I bought it: pick up Birthright. You can buy the other paths as DLC, and Birthright is the easiest/most straightforward path. I'm playing Conquest now, it's tough, and I know I'll get pretty bored when I go back and do Birthright second because it's more remedial.

I bought a 3DS grip and while I feel somewhat silly playing what appears to be a batarang in public it's worth it simply because of how much more comfortable the system is to hold & use with a grip in the mix. make sure you get one that will fit your system; not all grips are created equal

+1 for Rhythm Heaven Compilation; people on SA who imported it said there's a story you have to slog through, but I have faith that they'll do the localization proud. also stoked for SNES VC games to be released, particularly Earthbound and LTTP which I believe I get for cheaper since I had already bought both on Wii U? who knows. the idea of having to continue to buy these old ROMs is infuriating and insulting but I will keep doing it if only to signal to Nintendo that they should definitely keep cranking out ports like this; we might even get Mario RPG.

in other news, HNNNNNG: http://www.polygon.com/2016/3/3/11158320/super-famicom-nintendo-3ds-limited-edition

I'm perfectly happy with my New XL, but every time I see those colored XYBA buttons I get a burning urge to get one of those. that's a piece of consumer electronics with hellacious visual appeal. apparently the non-XL is only available as part of bundles so I'd have to get ANOTHER 3DS and go through the whole system transfer rigamarole. but damn some of these faceplates look nice as fuck; I really like the one made of wood (even if it costs $50 - although at least that's not as bad as the glow-in-the-dark Boo one which goes for $200ish).

grinding like a jolly elf (jamescobo), Friday, 4 March 2016 06:53 (eight years ago) link

Yeah part of the reason I went for the n3ds non-xl was those colored buttons. It's just too good a look.

More hardware-locked virtual console is a bit eeeh, but also yes, I will buy those SNES games for my n3DS. I hope / think the NX will be a shift in terms of logical account sharing across systems and also cross-buy handheld/console.

Nhex, Friday, 4 March 2016 09:29 (eight years ago) link

Yeah I've seen a bunch of people trying to convince themselves that it's justified because the emulation needs the extra CPU, but when the first gen 3DS was handling GBA emulation just fine that's clearly bollocks.

the uniqueness of our billionaires (bizarro gazzara), Friday, 4 March 2016 13:21 (eight years ago) link

To be fair the first gen was running the GBA games natively the same way they run DS games natively, they boot up in a different mode. Emulation is a lot more CPU intensive. The lack of crossbuy is however utterly laughable in 2016, and the pricing of these games is crazy. £8.99 for a 20+ year old ROM?!?

You'd probably pay more for the carts on ebay to be fair... after a few shitty years i wouldn't blame them for not glutting the market
with ultra cheap fantastic older games that will fill up peoples consoles in place of newer premium ones that they have more reason to sell

jamiesummerz, Friday, 4 March 2016 13:48 (eight years ago) link

To be fair the first gen was running the GBA games natively the same way they run DS games natively, they boot up in a different mode.

Couldn't they just do that for the SNES games too though? I mean even if that locks out your streetpasses while you're playing or whatever. I'm sure people with older hardware would rather put up with that than feel they're being encouraged to buy a whole new machine just to play pilotwings in 2016.

JimD, Friday, 4 March 2016 13:58 (eight years ago) link

No, the 3DS contains a DS chipset which incorporates a GBA chipset, so when GBA games are played they are run natively using a GBA hardware chip. There is no SNES hardware chip in the 3DS so they can't be run natively, they would need to be emulated by the 3DS CPU. Presumably the OG 3DS CPU is not powerful enough to run SNES emulation.

Pocket Card Jockey is legit, one of those perfect "just one more" portable games.
It's a solitaire horse racing hybrid, where you race horses around a track by playing games of simplified solitaire to a time limit. Yes really.
If you lose too many races your horse gets sent to the farm and you try again with a different horse. Horses at the farm can be paired off to breed the next generation of horses, inheriting characteristics of their parents.
The presentation is simple but cute, reminds me of the Rhythm Heaven games in its flat cartooniness.
Oh yeh and it's made by the Pokemon people, there's a lengthy free demo available. Try it!

whole bunch of 3ds news worth bringing up:

- stoked for the imminent release of the DQ7 remake (even though it apparently requires you to go through an eight-step process every time you want to save), but nowhere near as stoked as I am for Natsume's port of River City Tokyo Rumble. naturally that one isn't available for preorder for some unfathomable reason, though.

- played a whole bunch of the crossword puzzle game on a train ride up to SF recently; it really is quite excellent, even though its handwriting recognition is kind of questionable at times (although then again so is my handwriting).

- I also plan on picking up Rhythm Heaven Megamix (which apparently has been out for months and I just never realized it) and Picross 3DS in the very near future.

- I guess the real big news is the recent expansions to the Streetpass games, which I am beginning to love all-encompassingly. the new games are all pretty great, as is the ability to get more puzzle pieces from StreetPass folks and bank up to 100 StreetPass instances at a time. I really ought to start taking my 3DS with me whenever I go out walking around the neighborhood if only to rack up connections.

also super stoked for DQ7 which hopefully turns up in the post tomorrow.Have been playing 3D Outrun quite a bit as it was on sale last week, a perfect pick up and play game and the 3D really enhances the game imo.

Man, I am totally being suckered into buying River City: Tokyo Rumble now for that stupid keychain. If I can find it in stock anywhere...

Nhex, Wednesday, 28 September 2016 21:23 (seven years ago) link

um, is that a River City Ransom redo?

thrusted pelvis-first back (ulysses), Thursday, 29 September 2016 05:52 (seven years ago) link

Full blown sequel as I've heard :)

Nhex, Thursday, 29 September 2016 05:54 (seven years ago) link

man i bought a first gen 3ds and quit playing as it hurt my delicate little hands but that might make me bust it back out

thrusted pelvis-first back (ulysses), Thursday, 29 September 2016 05:55 (seven years ago) link

The lack of hand comfort is one of the excuses I give myself for barely having touched the system

Nhex, Thursday, 29 September 2016 09:08 (seven years ago) link

Never had any comfort issues, can play for hours at a time. Maybe I've got weird hands tho.
DQ7 is a total treat if you like old school JRPGs, love the way you visit an island in the past, solve a problem and then visit it in the present to see how it changed - not all happy endings either.

( X '____' )/ (zappi), Thursday, 29 September 2016 09:39 (seven years ago) link

1st gen system is very boxy and has sharp edges, they promptly rounded off and made it more grabbable for the update

Even the XL I have still feels like you're grasping a slippery cigarette case

Nhex, Thursday, 29 September 2016 15:16 (seven years ago) link

physical copies of River City Tokyo Rumble sold out in less than an hour, although it appears that fart-huffing ebay flippers bought a statistically significant number of copies. luckily I managed to get my order in during that brief window (although they're pressing a second run, complete w/ the Kunio keychain that came with initial copies); it showed up today so I haven't gotten to sink my teeth into it yet. unfortunately no co-op mode, though.

in other news, a game I've been playing a bunch lately is Gotta Protectors:

thos beads (jamescobo), Friday, 30 September 2016 06:39 (seven years ago) link

Tokyo Rumble is the shit, it's basically a Yakuza game drenched in 8/16-bit charm. hopefully the demand is sufficient to convince Natsume to bring other Kunio games stateside; there's already a 3DS collection in Japan compiling basically everything as well as romhack translations of a few titles (although not the basketball game, unfortunately) that they could use as a reference:

thanks for making my decision easier! i can' tell from the list, but i hope the samurai version is in that comp

Nhex, Thursday, 6 October 2016 03:24 (seven years ago) link

I hadn't even heard of the samurai Kunio, but from what I understand the collection is pretty comprehensive so if it came out on NES it should be on there

thos beads (jamescobo), Thursday, 6 October 2016 04:19 (seven years ago) link

ok i checked and it IS on there. man i hope this comes out here

four months pass...

to the great surprise of nobody, Kirby: Planet Robobot is pretty great. I'm only a couple of worlds in, but so far it's at least as good as Triple Deluxe (which also rules).

I played through the demo for Miitopia (the Tomodachi Life RPG) in one sitting; that game appears to be extremely my shit.

I already picked up Radiant Historia - haven't played any of these though. I'm surprised the SMT IV games haven't been ported to Switch already

ten months pass...

I picked up a 3DS XL recently. Hacked it and have been dumping 3DS, DS, and GBA game on it. Lovely, fun little device.

I mostly just wanted it to play Dragon Quest 8, but there really is a wealth of other great stuff in those libraries to explore. I’ve kinda scoured the “best games for _____” lists, but if anyone has any good recs I’m all ears.

circa1916, Sunday, 26 February 2023 22:41 (one year ago) link

any preferred genres?

( X '____' )/ (zappi), Sunday, 26 February 2023 22:44 (one year ago) link

Not particularly. I picked up a bunch of Mario, Castlevania, and Metroid stuff, always a safe bet. Got some DQ games, Fire Emblem, Shin Megami Tensei 4, even some Pokémon. I suppose I should just take the time to just read through this thread too. Just curious if anyone had any in particular that stuck out for them.

circa1916, Monday, 27 February 2023 00:24 (one year ago) link

OK some less obvious 3DS games off the top of my head:
Pocket Card Jockey - very addictive card based horse racing game, made by Pokemon people
Fantasy Life - Level 5 action RPG, has become a cult hit and a Switch sequel finally got announced recently
Ever Oasis - a Nintendo published action adventure game that somehow passed everyone by
NES Remix - kind of like a Warioware game that takes NES games and mashes them up for quick challenges
Attack of the Friday Monsters - really charming adventure game made by the "My Summer Vacation" guy. explore a small town in 1970s Japan as a kid, play card games, investigate giant kaiju footprints on the edge of town etc. makes you nostalgic for a childhood you never had.

could go on for hours about the incredible weirdness that can be found in the DS library, almost rivals the PS2 for the amount of creative madness that went on

( X '____' )/ (zappi), Monday, 27 February 2023 01:02 (one year ago) link

i second the ^ pocket card jockey & attack of the friday monsters recs
assuming you have FBI running, it's pretty straight forward to find a QR for mother 3
kid icarus: uprising is good fun
sega arcade classics and things like 3d outrun are worth an install
inazuma eleven is a high school soccer rpg
dillon's dead heat breakers is a lot of things mixed together in a fun weird way
on the DS bangai-o spirits is something to behold, i mean again i'm repeating what zappi says but there's a ton of great DS games

bridge of donkeys, Monday, 27 February 2023 02:16 (one year ago) link

I'm just finishing Devil survivor 2,both of those games are decent smt x tactics games, not mind blowing but solid

Potemkin Mystery Dungeon (Will M.), Monday, 27 February 2023 08:16 (one year ago) link

thanks all! will be checking all these out. it is kind of a crazy library, 3DS, DS, and GBA all together, figured there had to be plenty of off-the-beaten-track titles worth exploring.

circa1916, Monday, 27 February 2023 13:25 (one year ago) link

not to derail but zappi, i'd love to hear your DS recommendations

bridge of donkeys, Monday, 27 February 2023 17:08 (one year ago) link

I'll do one later! was thinking a lot last night about the DS library before falling asleep: playing stuff like Ouendan, Trauma Center, Layton etc for the first time and how amazing that was. also Bangai-O Spirits is a good shout, forgot about that one

( X '____' )/ (zappi), Monday, 27 February 2023 18:20 (one year ago) link

also just checked and no one has done a translation patch for the Mushishi DS game ;_;
