Honestly TOMBOT, I think you're out of your gourd.
But convince me: what is there POSSIBLY to dislike about Kid Icarus?

I can't help you there, but I can tell you something that was awesome about it:

TURNING INTO AN EGGPLANT

Seriously, who came up with the eggplant wizard and what were they smoking, because I'd like to try it. Somewhat tangentially, how great was it when the eggplant wizard was made a major character on the Captain N cartoon series?

awesome design. the grim reaper was creepy, with her/his creepy music/sound effect.

Oh that fuckin' reaper and the little reapettes. I can still hear that bullshit tinkly deedy deedy warped piano music as she unleashes the fury.

I always enjoyed it when the "komayto" showed up.

I used to love this game so much, though it was my first exposure to the term "mick" as a derogatory term for Italians (my dad informed me of this, probably when he heard me talking about killing Micks or something. It wasn't until I was older that I understood that the Micks had anything to do with the Rolling Stones.

I think you mean the Irish.

Laura H. (laurah), Sunday, 25 September 2005 22:06 (twenty years ago)

haha. or them.

I think the music was underwhelming, the difficulty was cranked higher than typical Nintendo fare at the time (which made it beyond frustrating for my unexceptional thumbs), the character design seemed subpar, and after Zelda + Metroid I was ready for more non-linear exploration and discovery, not more sequential stage-based gameplay. Out of the trilogy of NES's first "Adventure" titles it's easily the weakest, if not just flat-out irritating.

TOMBOT, Monday, 26 September 2005 15:20 (twenty years ago)

I _LOVE_ the music (I actually listen to it on occasion); I remember beating it in about four days, so while it was reasonably hard, I didn't find it too much so; I thought the character design was astonishingly original, innovative and silly (flying noses!); loved the rpg elements of building up for battle and the dungeons as well as the upward crawl; great boss battles... I dunno.
Comparing this to Metroid and Zelda is, I think, unfair; contemporaries or not, they are OBVIOUSLY better games. I would argue KI is a closer third than its lack of sequels and mainstream love would suggest.
I really really like it.

If asked nicely, I will host a few mp3s.

Yes it does. That's why all first-person shooters are crap.

TOMBOT, Wednesday, 28 September 2005 13:55 (twenty years ago)

That's why you need to hate the player, not the game.

N-Sider.com has an interesting article that explains why there was never a console sequel to Kid Icarus:

Gunpei Yokoi's team was delegated to support the Game Boy, while Shigeru Miyamoto's team was catapulted to rock stardom as the premier design group on the Super Nintendo home console.

This also explains why the Mario Land games were so weird (although I do like them, as well as Kid Icarus), and why Wario eventually became the protagonist, to the exclusion of Mario.

eight months pass...
I have the main theme in my head now.

I saw a 30+ minute "speed run" on YouTube.

This game was awesome.

I still have to remember to put up some music for this.

Forksclovetofu (Forksclovetofu), Monday, 19 June 2006 20:03 (nineteen years ago)

This game is hard but fun. Also it's the only cart I have that wants to work on the first try.
