In his first 50 innings he hasn’t been that wild, but he doesn’t top tier command yet. I think Maddon let him pitch a little further so that he could gain confidence, which resulted in more walks than anticipated but also that great strikeout turned 2 runs sequence.

Did not realize until a couple days ago that Naquin had ended up a Red. The two times I saw him play live for Cleveland he had great games both getting a couple hits and making really nice plays in the outfield. Seems like a guy that had the talent to make that next step but it never happened.

Of the five guys who got there first (2,000 games), three are in the HOF (I-Rod, Fisk, Carter), two aren't (Bob Boone, Jason Kendall). I thought that might be in and of itself decisive, but no. He's almost dead-even with Kendall in bWAR, so who knows.

kendall's HOF case suffers from playing for small market teams, and not having a HOF-level standout skill. his defense was always good, but i'm not sure he was ever regarded as elite like the current hall of famer yadier molina(i could be wrong)

One thing that Molina might have going for him is that he's the first to do it with one team; probably my own bias speaking, but I think at the margins HOF voters are a little less enthusiastic about itinerant careers.

So I'm watching a lot of Angels game (blame Trout and Ohtani) and one thing Girardi has done often is have Ohtani batting 2nd, Trout 3rd, someone with a terrible OPS at 4th and Walsh (1.063 OPS) at fifth.
Forgetting dealing with the psychology of players: is having a gap like this some sort of sabermetrics thing I missed? Would my instinct to have Walsh batting 4th straight after Trout and Ohtani be right?

has anyone else gone to a game in person this season, or are you planning to? i just bought a ticket for a cubs game in a few weeks. i'll be fully vaxxed, and the article in fangraphs this week about going to a cubs game showed me they've made more changes at wrigley than i realized to prevent crowds gathering in the concourse for extended times. so i'm not really too worried about the COVID aspects.
i'd rather go to a white sox game and not give the ricketts my money, but i can get to wrigley without taking public transportation, which i feel less comfortable about still, especially a potentially crowded train to the south side.

It's less impressive given that batters are swinging for the fences more than they used to, but more impressive because modern pitchers throw faster and with more movement.
― reggae mike love (polyphonic), Saturday, 24 April 2021 17:23 (two years ago) link
a little. but it's still amazing, especially the efficiency of it. i mean he only threw 109 pitches to get 15 strikeouts, and he got more swinging strikes (29) than balls (25)!

Or to put it another way: he's struck out 50 of the 101 batters he's faced this year.

As a comparison: the year Ryan struck out 383, he faced 1355 batters. Which I realize is far more impressive in terms of value, but just as a percentage, Ryan was at 28%. Aroldis Chapman is at 922/2222 for his career, 41%.

There's a chart in there that shows "Most Starts with Chance To Win When Leaving Game Since 2014," and how unlucky deGrom's been compared to the others. So above and beyond the lack of run support, his bullpen makes the situation that much worse.

i'm not *mad* because lol yankees, but this was the bottom of the 10th today in baltimore with the game tied 3-3
Jonathan Loaisiga pitching.Ramon Urias placed on second.- Pat Valaika batting Pitch 1: bunted foul Pitch 2: sac bunt 2-4 at 1B; Urias moves to third- Cedric Mullins batting Pitch 1: called strike Pitch 2: sac fly to center; Urias scores, BAL wins 4-3
- Pat Valaika batting Pitch 1: bunted foul Pitch 2: sac bunt 2-4 at 1B; Urias moves to third
- Cedric Mullins batting Pitch 1: called strike Pitch 2: sac fly to center; Urias scores, BAL wins 4-3
so the guy threw four pitches, all for strikes, did not allow a hit, and took the loss. at least the run is unearned, but jfc

― Zach_TBD (Karl Malone), Thursday, 6 May 2021 17:54 (two years ago) link
cardinals broadcasters say "they've heard word that albert wants to keep playing, continue his journey", so hopefully that's a good sign for that.
at the same moment, they played a recent clip of him hitting a HR, and it really did look like he was painfully limping out of the batter's box for his 40-45 second HR trot
there's an alternate history out there where injuries didn't destroy him so early. even his early-on destroyed version from the early Angels years were pretty great, considering
― Zach_TBD (Karl Malone), Thursday, 6 May 2021 17:57 (two years ago) link
I guess outright release is best option? Sitting him down doesn't work--Pujols wouldn't accept it--and even the Cardinals won't offer anything in a symbolic trade. Feels strange, though...Must have happened to other HOF'ers.

― Zach_TBD (Karl Malone), Thursday, 6 May 2021 22:05 (two years ago) link
can’t charge an error for mental mistakes/poor positioning! kind of a bad play by the catcher, who was never going to beat gleyber to third yet went so far that he couldn’t then beat gleyber home. but the real culprit is the pitcher, who just watched the whole thing.

― Zach_TBD (Karl Malone), Thursday, 6 May 2021 22:49 (two years ago) link
i know it's just anecdotal, but even factoring in normal early-season weirdness, players getting into mid-season form, etc, it seems like this year has been _exceptionally_ sloppy in the field. way more "little league" plays than i'm used to, at least for cardinal games, and it's on all sides

why don't pitchers throw strikes to Grandal? is his plate coverage so good?
― parenthetically yours, (Karl Malone), Friday, 14 May 2021 18:07 (two years ago) link
yeah, he has the 8th lowest zone% in the majors, which is weird because he isn't particularly amazing at making contact when swinging at strikes. he's above average but not by much
he just doesn't swing at pitches. lowest swing% in the majors by a good margin (25.5% to max muncy's 31.2%), lowest z-swing% (swings on pitches inside the zone) by a mile (39.6% to david fletcher's 48.6%), second lowest o-swing% (swings on pitches outside the zone) after muncy
so pitchers avoid the zone even though he barely ever swings when they put it in there (second highest called strike rate) and he barely ever swings on balls.
― ✖, Friday, 14 May 2021 19:16 (two years ago) link

Relent to me. Attack the zone. Throw strikes. If he hits a HR I'll buy you a beer. But he's not gonna hit it. Because I put a curse on him. I'll tell you about it after the strikeout. Throw strikes."

after boasting a bit about the Giants before heading into last weekend series against the Dodgers, the Giants ended up getting swept at home. even though they were in two of those games. this weekend the lose the fist game, had to come back in the second game where they stole a home run from Pujols and ultimately win the game. the Giants get to Kershaw on Sunday with five runs and take three out of four in Los Angeles. the Giants also have a winning record, so far, against San Diego...

Who this fuck is this Adolis García dude?!
― FRAUDULENT STEAKS (The Cursed Return of the Dastardly Thermo Thinwall), Tuesday, 1 June 2021 22:06 (two years ago) link
I'll do one of my periodic cut-and-pastes from Posnanski (I didn't know him either):
El Bombi!
OK, so there’s not a lot of great stuff going on with the Texas Rangers. But, seriously, how can you not get fired up about Adolis García? I mean, this guy has lived a baseball life. He was a star in Cuba, and then he defected to Japan, where he made almost no impact. The Cardinals signed him in 2017 based on his tools — great speed, quick bat, strong arm, etc.
But here’s a little secret that I’ve heard from baseball scouts: When you hear about a player being “toolsy,” it’s often code for “can’t hit.” Before he created Moneyball, Billy Beane, famously, was toolsy. Couldn’t hit. The Kansas City Royals used to have an outfielder named Alexis Gómez, and every year you would hear about this guy’s incredible tools. “He’s a center fielder who can run and throw, and he put on a power display in batting practice,” Baseball America gushed. He also had a great work ethic and was willing to do anything and everything to get better.
Unfortunately, as you guessed, he couldn’t hit.
García, for all his tools, could not convince the Cardinals of his ability to hit either. He did hit 22 homers in Triple-A Memphis in 2018 and 32 homers in Memphis in 2019, but he had a mindblowing 249-36 strikeout to walk ratio over those two seasons. The Cardinals first designated him for assignment and then made the best deal that they could, which meant trading him to the Rangers for $100,000.
But the Rangers found themselves equally unimpressed and also designated him for assignment, inviting anybody who wanted García to just claim him. When nobody did, they brought him to spring training, where he tore things up. The Rangers still didn’t have any room for him, so they left him back in Arizona … until a series of injuries inspired them to give El Bombi an opportunity.
He thought he homered in his second game … twice. The first time came as the ball crashed off the bat, a long fly ball to right that he and pretty much everyone else thought was gone. But this was in Tampa Bay, where the strangest stuff happens, and the ball apparently bounced off the top of the wall. But García was booking, he’s got a lot of speed, and he raced around the bases and was called safe at home, meaning he thought he’d hit an inside-the-park home run.
But that wasn’t true either, as, on replay, he was called out. The hit was ruled a triple.
So the next day he just homered conventionally off Tampa Bay’s Cody Reed.
Still, he always seemed to be on the brink of being dumped from the lineup. On May 2, he was hitting .233/.378/.479, and the dream sequence seemed to be ending for him.
In the three weeks since then, he’s hitting about .350 and slugging about .750, and he’s smashed 11 homers in 21 starts. As I write these words, El Bombi is tied for the lead in home runs.
I know that stuff like this does happen in other sports — a player will emerge from nowhere and outperform all expectations — but it’s particularly wonderful when it happens in baseball. When a Yermin Mercedes or Jesse Winker or Adolis García just starts playing at this crazy level, even if it doesn’t last, it’s so fantastic.

I don’t think any of the ideas in the article are particularly great. I don’t mind 7 inning doubleheaders though, because it speeds up the pace of play and makes those games a little more unique.

looks like only 4 of the runs were earned, though. and i'll still take that over Mike Mayers' debut in 2016 (1.1 IP, 9 ER)
Manager Mike Matheny, desperate for innings coverage, stuck with Mayers until the righty completed the 45-pitch frame. Once Mayers allowed three more runs in the second, his manager left for the mound to make a pitching change and offer a message."What I told him when he came off was that he's done a great job, had a great season, and that's a tough assignment he just walked into," said Matheny. "Hopefully he uses that as a learning experience and builds off of it."

TVT: Pardon the pun, but this question might seem like it’s from out of left field. Most if not all of today’s 4K TV sets have powerful upconverters built in. Why not simply produce and distribute a 1080p show and let the audience’s 4K TVs do the heavy lifting to convert the 1080p feed while also distributing a down-converted 720p show for the mass audience?BC: That’s a great question. For us, our goal is to provide 4K. That’s what the distribution networks are looking for as they continue to provide this kind of programming. So, our goal is that when we switch over to full 4K production that it is transparent to the home viewer.

idk. also they apparently delayed the start an hour, during which it did not rain, then played for a while in a downpour until the yankees got the lead, then called it after 50 minutes despite it having stopped raining
tbf there are a lot of storms in the area, but the whole thing at least *looks* sketchy

The name Guardians is a reference to well-known Art Deco statues located on the Lorain-Carnegie Bridge, which spans the Cuyahoga River and connects downtown Cleveland to the city’s trendy Ohio City neighborhood. Those statues are known as the “Guardians of Traffic.”

very consistent pattern this deadline of teams willing to give up touted prospects w/ many years of control for less than a few seasons of a high level player in order to try and win it this year. maybe a one year blip or perhaps a shifting in valuation a bit of what a push for a title is worth vs the allure of prospects w/ only a handful or so of teams really even trying to go for it
jesus luzardo for starling martejosiah gray & kiebert ruiz for scherzer/turnernick madrigal for craig kimbrelaustin martin & simeon woods richardson for jose berrios spencer howard for kyle gibson/ian kennedy

baez is a super-fun player but he also has a career 102 wRC+ and .303 OBP. a *lot* of his value depends on his defense. i'd be leery of signing him long-term.
it made sense for the cubs to trade those guys today; the real capitulation was when they dumped darvish.

sheehanWhat made last night’s game great wasn’t Kevin Costner or the corn stalks or the emotional manipulation. What made it great was Aaron Judge and Giancarlo Stanton and Eloy Jimenez and Jose Abreu and, oh man, Tim Anderson. What made it great was Michael Kopech pitching out of a jam, Luke Voit turning an unassisted double play, Tyler Wade mixing in some of that Deadball smallball with a bunt single and a steal. What made it great was baseball players playing baseball. Some people came away from last night saying baseball should have more events like this. I came away from it wondering what it would be like if the other 2,429 games on the schedule got this kind of treatment. You know why last night’s game looked so good? Because Fox produced it like an NFL game. It treated it like an NFL game. It celebrated it like an NFL game. It’s funny, after baseball spent decades turning itself into a television afterthought, we’ve now had two games on broadcast television, outside of normal windows, in five days. The Cubs and White Sox were on ABC Sunday night, and the Yankees and White Sox were on Fox last night. This used to be more common, of course; NBC started showing night games regularly in the 1970s, and ABC picked up that baton in 1976 but slowly backed away from prime-time baseball over the course of the 1980s. The CBS deal, which started in 1990, included no weeknight prime-time games on network TV, and the feature games of the week shifted to ESPN.The story of the last 40 years has been baseball becoming a lesser presence on network TV and the NFL becoming a TV behemoth. That’s not something that just happened, though. MLB chose this path, chose to partner with networks that treated the sport like an afterthought for six months, chose to diminish itself on the national stage, chose to regionalize itself. It’s time to make different choices. Last night's lesson isn’t that events are cool, but that baseball is cool. Hell, forget what happened in Iowa. Last night, Shohei Ohtani threw six innings, allowed one run, and hit a double. Home Run Derby champ Pete Alonso walked off the Nationals to create a virtual three-way tie atop the NL East. The Giants, an incredible story, won again to stretch their NL West lead to five games. If you can’t find three hours a week to put those stories and a hundred others on prime-time television, you’re not a partner. For three decades MLB chose to let television treat it as a stepchild. What we saw last night is what happens when a baseball game gets treated like a football game, promoted as a game you have to see, produced with the best of everything, selling superstars you have to watch.MLB has to stop apologizing for itself and demand that kind of treatment all the time. What we saw from a cornfield in the middle of nowhere last night could just as easily be broadcast from Chavez Ravine next week and Citi Field the week after that and the Trop the week after that. Big games between contending teams featuring huge stars, buried not on channels 206 and 587 but on 5 and 11, promoted and broadcast proudly the way Packers/Cowboys or Patriots/Steelers are. The signature scene in “Field of Dreams” is a speech by James Earl Jones’s Terence Mann. “The one constant through all the years, Ray, has been baseball.” In just three minutes, Mann makes the case for baseball more passionately than anyone in baseball has made for it in fifty years. The game needs that now. It doesn’t need gambling partnerships and crypto deals and NFT plays. It needs the game’s stewards to stand behind its game and its players and proudly demand what it got last night, all the time.

this afternoon I took a nap and had a dream about a bar poker game that I did not go to (it was last Friday and I really wanted to play but backroom bar games are kind of a dicey proposition right now). in this dream a guy is telling me about the cash game and who was all there and he mentions that the big winner in the cash game was Barry Zito. I have not thought about Barry Zito in years, never really paid much attention to him, and now he's like the one guy named in this random dream of mine? was he in the news or something lately? how did this get caught in my subconscious?

Reds just pulled Antone with a 3-2 count after he injured himself...I knew you could do this, but I've never actually seen it done. Does he get charged the run if the batter scores or does it go to the new pitcher?
― frogbs, Wednesday, 25 August 2021 03:38 (two years ago) link
I’ve seen it where the batter is injured mid-at bat and the new pinch hitter inherits the same count. The pinch hitter then struck out but the K was charged to the injured hitter.
― Michael F Gill, Wednesday, 25 August 2021 03:46 (two years ago) link
this suggests that, given a 3-2 count, if the batter walks and later scores, it would be charged to antone. any other method of him scoring would be charged to the reliever
Rule 10.16 (h) The procedure when more than one pitcher is involved in giving a base on balls.A relief pitcher shall not be held accountable when the first batter to whom he pitches reaches first base on four called balls, if such batter has a decided advantage in the ball and strike count when pitchers are changed.(1) If, when pitchers are changed, the count is:2 balls, no strikes2 balls, 1 strike3 balls, no strikes3 balls, 1 strike3 balls, 2 strikes, and the batter gets a base on balls, the official scorer shall charge that batter and the base on balls to the preceding pitcher, not to the relief pitcher.(2) Any other action by such batter, such as reaching base on a hit, an error, a fielder's choice, a force out, or being touched by a pitched ball, shall cause such a batter to be charged to the relief pitcher.(3) If, when pitchers are changed, the count is:2 balls, 2 strikes1 ball, 2 strikes1 ball, 1 strike1 ball, no strikesno ball, 2 strikesno ball, 1 strike, the official scorer shall charge that batter and the actions of that batter to the relief pitcher.
A relief pitcher shall not be held accountable when the first batter to whom he pitches reaches first base on four called balls, if such batter has a decided advantage in the ball and strike count when pitchers are changed.
(1) If, when pitchers are changed, the count is:
2 balls, no strikes
2 balls, 1 strike
3 balls, no strikes
3 balls, 1 strike
3 balls, 2 strikes,
and the batter gets a base on balls, the official scorer shall charge that batter and the base on balls to the preceding pitcher, not to the relief pitcher.
(2) Any other action by such batter, such as reaching base on a hit, an error, a fielder's choice, a force out, or being touched by a pitched ball, shall cause such a batter to be charged to the relief pitcher.
(3) If, when pitchers are changed, the count is:
2 balls, 2 strikes
1 ball, 2 strikes
1 ball, 1 strike
1 ball, no strikes
no ball, 2 strikes
no ball, 1 strike,

it helps that that wainwright's been throwing against the pirates a lot recently, but he's been solid all season. a real surprise that he is still the legitimate "ace" of the cardinals. his last 9 starts: 1.55 ERA, 2.44 FIP, 58.0 IP, and he went through at least 7 innings in all but one (which was 6 innings).
he's second in baseball in innings pitched this year (169.2 right now, behind only Zack Wheeler at 176.2).
i'm a big doofus for calling for his retirement a few years ago. after 2015-18 i really thought he was done. in interviews and such, he always mentions that his arm was really hurting badly during that entire time (duh), but that he legit feels much better now. he always says stuff like "it's nice to not be in terrible pain!" or whatever. makes sense!
yadi is supposedly retiring after 2022, it would be fitting for wainwright to go as well, if he wants to sync up the retirement party train with his pal

the dodgers pythagorean record is 90-45, on pace for a 107-game winning season. irl they're 85-50, on pace for a 103 game-winning season, and in second place to the giants, who are also irl on pace to win 103 games. plus it's an odd year. giants for the WS, i guess.
also, adam wainwright continues to bizarrely be one of the most effective pitchers. he was pitcher of the month for september, and last night tossed a gem over 7 innings that was only slightly spoiled by the relief pitcher allowing a couple of wainwright's inherited runners to score. if that wouldn't have happened, i think he was about to break his PR of 26 consecutive scoreless innings, back in 2010. not bad for an old guy

also, the top 2 contenders for AL ROY are adolis garcia and randy arozarena, both of whom were talented cardinals outfielders a few years ago. garcia was traded to the rangers for cash considerations. arozarena was traded (along with jose martinez, one of the most entertaining baseball players of this century) for matthew liberatore, who will hopefully be like jack flaherty someday, but probably will not.

― mookieproof, Thursday, 9 September 2021 20:50 (two years ago) link
I can at least relate some of the Giants' individual performances (fluke or otherwise) to their record. They've got two guys who should be top 5 or 10 in Cy (Gausman) and MVP (Crawford) voting, and also an HOF-bound player (Posey) having a very good year. The Rays have a catcher with 30 HR, great, but barely hitting over .200; a second baseman with 33 and not much else; an all-time defender in CF who doesn't hit much at all; and no one all that notable on their pitching staff that I can see. Cruz has been pretty good since coming over, but there's been some decline.
Franco looks great, and he broke a record belonging to Mickey Mantle. But even there, he's great for a 20-year-old; I'm not sure you'd take much notice of his season if he were 27.

bauer is now on "administrative leave" for the season, and ozuna has also been put on administrative leave. first for 7 days, then revisiting afterward.
"The league has the authority to unilaterally place players on administrative leave for up to seven days, per the MLB – MLBPA Joint Domestic Violence, Sexual Assault and Child Abuse Policy. The leave can be extended thereafter by mutual agreement between MLB and the Players Association. Placement on administrative leave is not a disciplinary action and does not reflect any sort of finding in the league’s investigation. Players placed on administrative leave continue to be paid and to accumulate Major League service time."

I posted a comparison somewhere a couple of years ago of how close Goldschmidt and Freeman were statistically. Freeman seemed to overtake him for good, and I kind of forget about them. But I noticed Goldschmidt hit his 25th tonight, and also that he played well enough last year to get some MVP support.
They're still amazingly close (and each other's #1 Similarity Score, 953.6--very high):
PG: 273 HR, 910 RBI, .292/.388/.518, 141 OPS+, 49.4 WARFF: 270 HR, 935 RBI, .295/.383/.509, 138 OPS+, 42.5 WAR
The WAR difference is mostly explained by Freeman being two years younger (31/33). At the end of his age-31 season, Goldschmidt was at...42.5 WAR!
I think you'd be hard-pressed to find two contemporary stars so in lockstep.
― clemenza, Tuesday, 14 September 2021 02:16 (two years ago) link
Actually, Freeman broke in a year earlier, so that doesn't explain the WAR difference--it's all defense.

the story of last night's game, up until the O'Neill HR, was the home plate umpire. that was one of the worst called games i've ever seen. the strike zone extended about 4 feet outside, for both teams

“It’s sports” just comes across a lot like “boys will be boys” to me. Maybe they both settle down and Tatis gets whatever message he needs to get. Maybe they don’t. Maybe you don’t want it to become a pattern of confrontations in the dug out. If machado wants to set him straight, fine - but if he can’t do it in a way that doesn’t lead to shouting and shoving, I’m not sure that’s the best quality leadership. I’ll have to watch the clip again maybe and see if it’s Tatis over reacting to machado approaching him, or if Manny was the one going over and escalating things.

Marcus Semien needs another double for 40 HR/40 doubles. That was a big deal when Willie Stargell did it in 1973--it had already been done ~ten times, but not for a while. Semien will be about the 40th guy to do it (or at least the 40th season; a few guys, like Pujols, have done it more than once). The great Chris Davis had 50 HR/40 doubles in 2013.

One absolutely bonkers thing I noticed today - this season could very well end with no hitters over 7 fWAR. Going all the way back to 1884 when the NL expanded beyond 112 games, I can only find 2 seasons where that happened, 1900 and 1918. Didn't even happen in the strike seasons. Most seasons it doesn't come remotely close to happening.

what the fuck Devin
Devin Williams is being placed on the 10-day IL with a fractured right hand. He told us he had too much to drink after Sunday’s celebration, got upset about something and punched a wall with his pitching hand. He will need surgery. “If I could take it back, I would.”— Adam McCalvy (@AdamMcCalvy) September 29, 2021

Brewers have weird luck with that sort of thing. Grienke missed his first month because of a pickup basketball game during Spring Training. Lucroy dropped a suitcase on his hand. Chris Narveson cut one of his fingers open trying to re-lace a glove. JJ Hardy hurt his hand in a walkoff celebration. If I recall correctly we also had a guy drop a bowling ball on his foot

so the sox and yankees will take the wild cards with wins on sunday; with losses, they'll at least get a game 163
boston won the season series against each of the other three, so should play at home in case of ties
chris sale is slated to pitch for the sox tomorrow in what is not now a must-win game -- but if they lose they could face two straight must-win games instead of one. do you still start him?
also the yankees are facing michael wacha tomorrow, which would seem to bode well for them

The Jays did great to get back in this, and great to sweep the Orioles. no one even made it to 6.9. honestly wild. even if trout/acuna/tatis had all been healthy enough to make it to 7, that still would've been a really light year. in 1999 no one had more than 8, which is rare in itself, but 6 players had 7+.

correa led position players with 7.2 bWAR. by my quick research the last times no hitter had at least 8 was 1981, 1971, and 1940, and 7.2 is the lowest leader I can see since george sisler led with 6.6 in 1918

speaking of stats/records like this: the triple
Pour one out for … the triple? For the first time in the history of baseball (not counting last season’s 60-game mess), nobody reached double digits in baseball’s most exciting play. No one got all that close, either; the year ended with David Peralta, Bryan Reynolds and Shohei Ohtani all tied with eight. We came awfully close to the same happening in 2019, when four batters tied for the MLB lead with ten, but it’s been only 14 years since each league had a hitter with 20-plus in Jimmy Rollins and Curtis Granderson.
