The ballots have been counted and verified. It's been a tremendous amount of fun and hard work, which unfortunately coincided with very busy couple of weeks for me. I had big plans for Johnny Fever-style pictures to go with the results but it turns out I didn't have the time, patience or talent to make that happen. So feel free to pepper this thread with pics as appropriate.
But I am 100% confident that these results are 100% accurate and that's the main thing, really.
Let's start with the top 5 videos!

I'm not sure I've ever seen that video!
How many times did they use the "band plays in cramped place, hilarity ensues" theme, anyway?
(I'm guessing that one of those videos is a good bet for #1)

The first time I saw the video for "Inbetween Days" I was eating a plate of fries while sitting on my bed and when the green-faced RS appeared I suddenly felt very nauseous. I have a hard time watching that vid since then, though I do like when he gets kicked in the ass by the cartoon sock.

I must've watched the Staring At The Sea video a thousand times between the ages of 14 and 16. I can still remember some of the funny little home movies between the videos of them messing about in car parks quite clearly. If that was on BluRay I'd be out buying it right now.

Have I got this right, you've scored these ballots 50-46-43-40-38? Isn't that kind of elaborate and a lot of work?
― Ismael Klata, Wednesday, 15 August 2012 21:49 (eleven years ago) link
Yeah that's right. It's not really that much work though, just one spreadsheet with a lot of lookup tables and pivot tables. The most work was correcting peoples spelling and formatting mistakes. What other way is there to do it? I used the same spreadsheet that (I think) everybody running these polls uses, just tweaked it a bit.
― nate woolls, Wednesday, 15 August 2012 21:52 (eleven years ago) link
I guess not; I imagine most polls just go 5-4-3-2-1 though, so hats off for weighing them so precisely

A bit late now, but I remember when the "Never Enough" video came out. On Musique Plus (the québécois Much Music), they had made a big deal about airing it for the first time. I programmed the VCR to record it while I was in school. I couldn't wait to come home and watch it! And it didn't disapoint :-)
― LeRooLeRoo, Wednesday, 15 August 2012 22:05 (eleven years ago) link
I think Three Imaginary Boys vs Boy's Don't Cry might've split some votes but with the points combined either one wouldn't have made the top 5.

My ballots for the results posted so far:Videos:1. Close to Me2. Pictures of You3. Never Enough4. High5. The Lovecats
Albums:1. Seventeen Seconds2. Faith3. Bloodflowers4. The Head on the Door5. Wish
I did have a hearty chuckle at the one joker that put 'Charlotte Sometimes' in their top videos.
Leaving Disintegration out of my top albums was intentional because I figured it was going to be an instant lock at #1 (it still would only have been #5 on my list otherwise).

Three of these are duds? Not sure why anyone who sees no value in these records would be interested in anything else the Cure has to offer.

I'm of the opinion that while there are higher pop highs on the albums following the glum trio, those 3 are more consistent. Basically I get dismissing them and I get rating them above everything else. I do the latter.

Lol looks like he's a pretty good drummer there
I think Lol was a perfectly fine drummer for the type of music the Cure was making. Live tapes from 79-82 are always a lot more exciting to listen to for me than the more polished live band of later years, and I don't recall hearing too many mistakes. That being said, the drum parts of several songs from Pornography are much too similar, and this perhaps reveals his limitations etc. Or it could be exactly what Robert wanted at the time - I dunno.

I for one really love the live versions of 'Why Can't I Be You?' where they stretched it out to an almost improvised jam and Bob added a bunch of verses.
I just wish the studio recording was that good.

Although my life is (I hope) much less goth than it was when I was first into the Cure, I find it's the heavier stuff that's stuck with me. Instead of sounding too adolescent, records like Pornography and Faith engage me more than ever while the whimsical pop songs irritate me way more than they did. I have no interest in hearing Love Cats, Friday I'm In Love, Why Can't I Be You, etc ever again.
― Get wolves (DL), Thursday, 16 August 2012 14:36 (eleven years ago) link
I just listened to High for the first time in ?? years and you summed up my feelings perfectly. Chirpy pop about "me and you" was NOT what I was not looking for in this band then or now. That said, I had my first public dancing experiences to some of those songs and all of my best friends have been the type to dance to "Just Like Heaven" at their wedding receptions, so they have a bit of sentimental value.

No, it's the rhythm section talking. You really can't fuck with the piano, bass and drums on that song, plus the arrangement is sublime.
"Mint Car", OTOH, is a big wet fart and one of the worst things they ever did.
― Lil Swayne of Pie (DJP), Thursday, 16 August 2012 15:12 (eleven years ago) link
Huh, never thought of "Six Different Ways" as cute, tho I guess I can see lyrically. Musically it has one of my favorite grooves of theirs, that syncopated 6/8 is pretty killer.

― something of an astrological coup (tipsy mothra), Thursday, 16 August 2012 15:18 (eleven years ago) link
"Mint Car" is stupid but harmless, I wouldn't change the station if it came on the radio. "Love Cats" is a stupid song with a boss arrangement, but once you move past the gimmick of the Cure doing jazz, there's nothing about it that is characteristic of their best work. Maybe that's an unfair criticism, since it was really just a one time only thing, but I'm sick of "Why Can't I Be You" for similar reasons.
― NoTimeBeforeTime, Thursday, 16 August 2012 15:26 (eleven years ago) link
The thing that got me hooked on all the 80's CURE was robert's voice. It was like another instrument. I mean the song writing was great, but then the delivery added so much more. Whether the song was morose or giddy, smith created so much with his inflections, etc...
― nicky lo-fi, Thursday, 16 August 2012 15:28 (eleven years ago) link
And while I might prefer their Pornography/goth side, I definitely don't hate their poppy stuff (I voted for plenty of it).

I wasn't saying that Mint Car >>> Love Cats. But I think that some people give '80's pop Cure a pass while saying that their 90's pop stuff (which could be just as twee and ridiculous) is unlistenable.
― NoTimeBeforeTime, Thursday, 16 August 2012 15:39 (eleven years ago) link

One is arguably more novel, one is arguably more universal
TS: Long patter-style phrases with few pauses for breath vs simple stop-start 2-bar phrases with gigantic 2-bar pauses for breath in between
TS: Crisp-sounding engineering vs "you know what would make this song pop is if we put the 'ass-muffle' filter on it"
take out the phrase "ass-muffle" and this is tech talk that suggests the difference without actually making one objectively superior. I like both and totally see the argument for why lovecats is more "impressive" but at the same time I can see enjoying "Mint Car" more.

It has nothing to do with one being more twee and ridiculous. I think we all know and love that side of Robert. It's in the execution. "The Lovecats" is pop genius musically and lyrically. "Mint Car"'s chorus is one of the most boring they ever did.
Also it seems the production of their post-Wish output is just really messy and hard to listen to. I just re-listened to "The Only One" since it was mentioned as breezy and effortless on this thread and I agree the songwriting is there, but they insist on making it sound so muddy and unpleasant.

I was the other #1 voter for The Figurehead. Its close relative and near-equal Siamese Twins was my #5. All of Pornography was in my top 30. In fact, my ballot was overwhelmingly tilted towards the run of albums between 17S and The Top, which is the Cure that's stuck with me the most, possibly because I was introduced to it very young, or possibly because its deep and mysterious poetry still makes me shiver and dream
But yeah, The Figurehead - the way it emerges from the raging instrumental torment with each new revelation ("I could lose myself..." and "Too many secrets...") - some of the greatest lyrics ever written, no doubt. Would agree with Dan about that run of tracks, albeit I'd probably extend it two in either direction. Pornography is probably among my top 5 records of all time - it's absolutely monumental, every track is great. That said, the two aforementioned centrepieces really do stand above and apart - holy hell, what music
My breakdown, then
Pornography - 8The Top - 7Faith - 417 Seconds - 3Bloodflowers - 2The Cure - 2 (really! Yes, they were Labyrinth and The Promise! Obviously!)KMKMKM - 2 (probably should have been 3 as I forgot to include The Snakepit)Wish - 13 Imaginary Boys - 1The Head On The Door - 1
THE TOP IS FUCKING AMAZING BTW

It probably is not helping that I am watching a Richard Herring live show as I type.

TY Pandemic. To EGREGIOUSLY TRADUCE my posting code, I'd add that I actually voted for 4 tracks off 17 Seconds, not 3, because I snuck At Night in at the bottom at the last second
...and to explain my lack of Disintegration voting - it's a good album but its very consistency means that I can ignore all of its tracks, happy in the knowledge that everyone else will vote for the right ones. Plus I just don't like it as much as I probably should. That's not really putting it right. I don't need to listen to it, ever, although I recognise its brilliance.
Whoever can guess my #2 wins a prize or something idk (clue: won't place)
Oh! Oh! Much Pornography!
My ranking of the album was

With "Push" it's like they came up with a decent 2-minute instrumental demo, then recorded Robert trying out some vocal ideas over it. Then decided to play both back-to-back and call it a song, rather than just selling the instrumental to an advertising agency like they should have.

LESS "PUSH" MORE "FAITH"
One of my brother's friends in college had a bunch of Cure bootlegs and taped live versions of "Three Imaginary Boys" and "Faith" onto a cassette for me in the summer of 1988; that bass line has been a total earworm for me ever since and led to me being obsessed with the idea of becoming a bass player all through high school
20+ years later, I'm finally learning how to play guitar; the seeds of that were planted by this song
xp: oh this is bad-ass too

My 10th grade English teacher was really confused as to why I wanted to read The Stranger for extra credit until I played her this song; the way the lyrics are directly lifted from That Scene makes for a chilling moment, both in the book and the song.

didn't vote in this (too much and I'm not THAT huge a fan to expend the effort) but pleased to see the results
I would have liked to see what Robert Smith's record collection looked like in the late 70s through the 80s - his range of influences has always seemed a bit inscrutable to me (Barrett, Bowie, probably some krautrock - altho the Cure doesn't really sound like any of those things in and of themselves)

I got Boys Don't Cry for Christmas in 1992, and sometime in the next month I had it on the family stereo while my mom was taking down Christmas decorations. "F-I-R-E-I-N-C-A-I-R-O" finally made her demand it be turned off.
I got over it pretty fast myself.
― da croupier, Friday, 17 August 2012 17:13 (eleven years ago) link
do you mean just whatever top 40 stuff was current at the time in the UK...? This is one of the most curious things to me about Smith's ouevre, that he has very clear pop smarts for hooks, arrangements, song structures, etc. but they're filtered through this bizarre (or at least highly unusual) stylistic tics - his voice, odd instrumentation, broad swathes of digital reverb, strange effects, harsh synth and guitar tones etc. The pop angle was mostly dormant for a lot of their overly goth period (Faith, Pornography etc.) but it really came to the fore later obviously.

?? Can see no argument for "Killing an Arab" over the much better "Fire in Cairo." "Cairo," like "Grinding Halt," has feeling and mystery; "Killing an Arab" has feeling but opens up to say "hey look I'm name-checking stuff from a book" -- plus "I'M ALIVE. I'M DEAD" is too on-the-nose as far as I'm concerned. Not saying it's a bad song, just that it's below the median for early Cure.
(To be fair, "Boys Don't Cry" is pretty lyrically on-the-nose too, but dude, those triplets!)
― Guayaquil (eephus!), Friday, 17 August 2012 17:49 (eleven years ago) link
well... "Killing An Arab" is going to be pretty on-the-nose considering the lyrics are taken pretty much verbatim from the book, so that doesn't bother me
"Lullaby" is fantastic and, looking back at my ballot, I am astounded that I didn't vote for it

IIRC my dad really liked all of their albums up through Disintegration except for Pornography which he just thought was tuneless whining with no real songcraft; the closest he got to liking that album was "Siamese Twins" and even there the meandering vocal melody drove him insane.

I had "Lovesong" low on my list, but couldn't leave it off. Apart from being a fine pop tune, I remember how weird it seemed that the Cure had a top 10 hit. A significant moment in that late '80s wave of "college rock" taking over.

I didn't remember it reaching #2, but I do remember that a lot of people who made fun of newwave/postmodern/weirdo rock before that were all of the sudden very into that song (in my own sphere, natch, but I bet that was the case in a lot of places). the drumming on the original is great but I really dig the guitar/bass interplay and how the synths divebomb in on it, and then the counterpoint between everything as every instrument noodles along on its own complimentary melody line while Robert floats his vocal line over the top
I also love how, in the remix, this organized chaos drops in and out over the dub beat
it was not on my ballot but I totally love it

Just catching up on this poll. Great list so far, they really have a ridiculous amount of brilliant songs.
I'm kind of surprised nothing later than Wish has made it, thought something would sneak in from the later albums.
Any more B-sides to place? I was hoping Throw Your Foot would make it but the only one I can still see placing would be maybe This Twilight Garden.
Glad to see wo much love for A Night Like This, I ended up putting it as my number one. That sax solo gets me everytime, it's one of his best vocals too. I'm fairly sure my number two will be in the top ten, maybe as their highest album track.
Biggest surprise is Lovesong not being in the top ten, I thought that was one of their most universal songs.

kind of sorry that transcendent stuff like "the drowning man", "faith" and "disintegration" didn't crack the top 10, but very happy with how the list is unfolding otherwise.
― charlie h, Saturday, 18 August 2012 03:10 (eleven years ago) link
i'm listening through the Disintegration album right now. certain parts of this still really get under my skin. there's the unyielding romance of "the same deep water as you", the dream fragment ghost assembly of "last dance" and the unstoppable title track, which is just anthem-like in its hysteria.
― charlie h, Saturday, 18 August 2012 03:19 (eleven years ago) link
The only b-side I see placing now is "10:15 Saturday Night". It's also better known because it's on Three Imaginary Boys, Boys Don't Cry, Staring At The Sea, and Join The Dots! So really, it's like a b-side/album cut/single. (x-post)

End and Apart are the only Wish tracks I voted for. (End is so much better than Open, which has already made the poll.)
― Chick-on-Chick-fil-A (Johnny Fever), Saturday, 18 August 2012 04:02 (eleven years ago) link
i dunno man, while it's easy to compare "open" and "end", because they're kind of like flipside responses to the same situation, i find it hard to say that one is better than the other.
― charlie h, Saturday, 18 August 2012 05:00 (eleven years ago) link
i think Wish will be subject to revisionism some time soon. i mean, i'm looking at the tracklist and there are honest to god six or seven stone cold classics on there.

I mean, I like it, it's no Mint Car, but one of their 40 best? nah
Wish is great. I just think there's something about the production that makes them sound more like a normal band. Less reverb or echo or something. Less keyboards, more accoustic sounding. But it's full of great songs. "To Wish Impossible Things" is often overlooked, and any band would kill to have recorded "Trust".
― LeRooLeRoo, Saturday, 18 August 2012 05:52 (eleven years ago) link
It is excellent. At first glance it looks like a New Jersey but that's really unfair. It's more that fashions changed under them than because of any drop in quality.
― Ismael Klata, Saturday, 18 August 2012 06:13 (eleven years ago) link
I never liked "Lovesong" all that much. It's sweet and simple, and "Disintegration" (the album) needed a break from all the heaviness in the middle, but it's not that great a song, and they wrote *much* better love songs elsewhere (no pun intended).
"Fascination Street" was my #3. It came out just as I was getting into the Cure, and so for the longest time, that song *was* the Cure for me (I wasn't a big fan right away and didn't start listening to their entire albums until months later). Cheers for the "Trilogy" version too, that's probably my favourite live recording of it.
I don't have my ballot in front of me, but I voted for "Push", "Faith", "Pictures of You", "Fascination Street", "One Hundred Years", "Disintegration", "Jumping". I knew my songs would start showing up eventually ...
― NoTimeBeforeTime, Saturday, 18 August 2012 06:41 (eleven years ago) link
Is anyone else a bit surprised that nothing post-1992 will make the poll? I figured a track or two from "The Cure" or "Bloodflowers" would sneak in around #30. At least that's what I thought before I saw the results of the albums poll.
― NoTimeBeforeTime, Saturday, 18 August 2012 06:44 (eleven years ago) link
One more thing about "Fascination Street" ... DJP wrote on the polling thread that people would like more of their post-'92 songs if Boris Williams had drummed on them, which was very OTM. I don't think there's another Cure song that relies on the interplay between bass and drums more than "Fascination Street". It could have been a very ordinary song without an extraordinary drummer playing on it.
Eighteen individual #1 votes have placed so far, that's about half the participants? So that leaves about an equal number of #1 votes to be spread among the top ten songs. That's some interesting non-consensus, which probably means the points in the top ten will be really close?
― NoTimeBeforeTime, Saturday, 18 August 2012 07:06 (eleven years ago) link
I don't think it's giving too much away this late in the game if I tell you that the highest placed song from The Cure was (I Don't Know What's Going) On at #110 and the highest Bloodflowers song was Watching Me Fall at #109 (the highest 4:13 Dream song was Underneath The Stars at #127 and the highest Wild Mood Swings song was The 13th at #91).

I thought "Want" had an outside chance of making it from WMS. Not surprised that "Underneath the Stars" and "Watching Me Fall" were the favourites from those albums (although it's hard to judge "favourites" when probably three people voted for them).
"(I Don't Know What's Going) On" was my #19 or #20. I knew it had no chance of making the top 50, but thought that "End of the World" or "Lost" had an outside shot.

I'm not really, when I see all the great pre-WMS songs that aren't gonna make it like, "Just One Kiss", "How Beautiful You Are", "2 Late", "Sinking", "A Few Hours After This", etc...
― LeRooLeRoo, Saturday, 18 August 2012 11:04 (eleven years ago) link

― LeRooLeRoo, Saturday, 18 August 2012 12:28 (eleven years ago) link
xpost I can't really disagree ... if we had 80-song ballots and a top 100 then it's more likely someone would throw a bone at something from WMS, but not with only 40 picks and too many good 80's songs to choose from.
I picked a few post-"Wish" songs, partly out of a notion that I wanted to be "fair" toward their later career (whatever that means exactly) because I do think they've done some excellent stuff in the past fifteen or so years. But I'm far from certain that those songs are really better than the more than half the songs on the poll that I love and didn't vote for.

Actually, I voted for all of 52, 53, 54 and 56.
On the other hand I seemingly gave "I'm a Cult Hero" its sole vote plus one of only two votes for "Carnage Visors". Haha.

Cool, I had "Plainsong" at #1 but really wasn't sure it would be top 10. Nice to see it so high. Also glad to see my highest-ranked non-finisher landed just outside, at #51.

Close To Me being one place higher than All Cats Are Grey just seems wrong but apart from that no complaints. Great top two and I'm pretty sure I love about 47 of the songs in the top 50.

didn't vote in this, not sure what i would've had #1 ("disintegration"? "inbetween days"? "primary"? "high"? "the walk"?), strangely happy to see "a forest" win though. the nouvelle vague cover of it is one of the few times where i think the nouvelle vague concept is worth it.

Didn't vote in this because I wouldn't have voted for anything post-Disintegration (because I'm not familiar with it, not because I don't like it.) Looks like I would have been in the mainstream of this poll so I guess I should have voted!

Gah, things like this make me wonder if I should rethink my "not having ILM in my site new answers" stance. Would love to have voted in this. May even have given "Lament" #1. Or "all cats".

I was really surprised to see "10:15 Saturday Night" and "All Cats Are Grey" finish so high (but surprised in a good way).
"Just Like Heaven" and "A Forest" finished way ahead and were the clear "consensus" favourites even though they got just zero and one first place vote respectively. I'm not sure this happened in any of the other polls, where the first place votes were so spread out and weren't concentrated at the top of the list. Two-thirds of the first place votes went to songs that finished outside the top ten!!
Thanks for the poll, Nate, this was a lot of fun.

So long as I know 20 (or 40) songs well enough to put them in some kind of order I usually vote.
Gah, I can't believe that happened! I ran through the list 4 or 5 times looking for vote splitters before doing the final tally.

Haven't got my ballot handy but I voted for 24 tracks, most of which placed. The ones that didn't:
The Blood - in my top 5. Genuinely surprised more people don't rate this.Screw - again, in my top 5.Seventeen Seconds - my #10 or thereabouts.Accuracy - ditto.Carnage Visors - mid table or just below.

closest thing to a surprise in the top 20 is Play For Today
BTW all nothing-past-Disintegration listeners should check out 2001 anagrammatic single Cut Here posthaste, it's one of Robert's most open and honest and touching songs ever, and a great pop tune, and can make you blub too.

it's a bit of a mess tbh, especially disc 4. but if you rip it as mini-albums based on eras and leave out a bunch of the latter stuff it's a wonderful resource

oh disc 4 is clearly the weakest, but it has "Home", "Waiting" and "A Pink Dream" on it (btw any one of those songs should have replaced "Mint Car" on WMS)

I'm surprised by "Close To Me" in the top 5. I didn't realise it was a bigger single than "In Between Days" or "Boys Don't Cry". "Primary" beating "Boys Don't Cry" is kind of a surprise too.

I think it's fair to say at this stage that Robert isn't particularly arsed about finishing up 4:14 Scream, and nor does he seem to be particularly interested in making any more new music. Having said that, for all that they've done since, they coulda split up in 2000 circa Bloodflowers like they were going to and it wouldn't have made much of a difference.
― Turrican, Thursday, 8 October 2015 17:59 (eight years ago) link
He said in an interview early last year when he announced the 4:14 Scream release plans that he wanted to do a new album with the current lineup but I don't know if that'll ever happen because it doesn't sound like it did this year when they weren't touring

With more than 100,000 votes cast — 101,336 to be exact — it’s time to reveal Slicing Up Eyeballs readers’ rankings of all 225 original songs officially released by The Cure over the past four decades...Fun fact: The No. 1 and No. 2 songs, after earning nearly 3,000 votes apiece, were separated by a single vote. The song that finished second was leading the way for much of the balloting, then the two switched positions near the end, and flipped back and forth a few more times before the poll closed.

a few thoughts: 100,000 votes, wow. with most of these polls the songs outside the Top 30 are a bit better as they are deeper cuts, i think our poll come out better, ranking songs seems to provide better results and wasn't so single heavy at the top. i did submit two ballots myself and what i did was take my ballot from this poll for PO25 and then used the last 15 to round out my ballot from there added 10 other songs with no repeats on either ballot. i should have just started over as i'm sure things have changed but used my ILM ballot anyways.

100 000 votes is incredibly impressive. It's nice to see "Charlotte Sometimes" so high. “Plainsong”, “One Hundred Years”, “From the Edge of the Deep Green Sea”, “A Strange Day” and “Push” are all great selections as non-singles in the Top 30.

“From the Edge of the Deep Green Sea” to this day is still my favorite Cure song.

It's also definitely up there for me as one of the finest things this band ever did.

just one vote difference between "a forest" and "just like heaven", that's nothing. i am surprised votes were that dispersed and that "a forest" didn't get more votes.

Showed my wife the clip and she asked if they’d been indoctrinated into the rock and roll hall of fame, which made me laugh as much as the original clip.
