this is from last year but i don't think i've seen it mentioned on ilx (maybe sandbox?)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t6Zz2mY8gR0

everything cottam does is good. the sounds just pop, spacious and dense at the same time, you just wanna drown in it (youtube doesn't do it justice.) kinda reminds me of terre thaemlitz at times.

i'm sure this was talked about on sandboxx during the downtime, but Kompakt has a recording of a live TWELVE HOUR SET by Michael Mayer up on soundcloud. It took me 2 days but i listened to the whole thing and it is fucking incredible. hearing a single DJ go 12 hours in one sitting is a rare treat.

http://soundcloud.com/kompakt/sets/michael-mayer-total-12-megaset/

Some of the individual pages for each segment have track lists in the comments.

⚓ (gr8080), Thursday, 12 January 2012 22:10 (twelve years ago) link

nice.

i'm liking the new terje ep a lot so far. he's definitely catering to the same folk who ate up "snooze 4 love" but i'm not sure that's a bad thing

psychgawsple, Thursday, 12 January 2012 23:48 (twelve years ago) link

I heard about that then completely forgot about it. Much appreciated, gr80!

the terje is marvellous

Number None, Friday, 13 January 2012 02:07 (twelve years ago) link

Yeah Terje is on fire right now, the two tracks I've heard from the EP are both lovely.

I did reasonably well at keeping up with bobbins last year but this thread always runs away from me so bookmarking now.

Any interest in supplementing this thread with a collaborative Spotify playlist?

Matt DC, Friday, 13 January 2012 09:56 (twelve years ago) link

I think "Inspector Norse" is better than anything for last year's EP, so immediate and full sounding - it seems so unfair that it's came out on the first fortnight of the year because I think it's going to stand tall over a lot of 2012. I don't massively care for the rest of the It's The Arps though, it's kinda boring?

matt2, Friday, 13 January 2012 17:42 (twelve years ago) link

Yeah Its the Arps is great, don't agree that its retreading the same ground as snooze 4 love. maybe in sort of a melodic/ harmonic way, buts its palette and feeling is totally different. while snooze 4 love had a 90s ambient house feeling, the Arps, i guess down to its minimally treated dry ARP synth sounds is all like popcorn/ Wendy Carlos novelty dicopop.

dsb, Friday, 13 January 2012 17:53 (twelve years ago) link

I posted another track from this on the sandbox thread right before we switched back over, but i have really been feeling the new Linkwood. Someone pointed out the melodic figure was very close to Pepe Braddock's Deep Burnt...

best part is how you can occasionally hear crowd noise-- in the last half hour he even has a damaged record/dusty needle/both on a song that he stops and restarts three times

⚓ (gr8080), Friday, 13 January 2012 21:04 (twelve years ago) link

It's like a low key cocktail party for you and Michael Mayer recorded it

mh, Friday, 13 January 2012 23:46 (twelve years ago) link

wait till you get to pts 3 and 4

pt 5 is probably my favorite-- def the "classics" segment and i'm guessing somewhere around 3 or 4am.

⚓ (gr8080), Friday, 13 January 2012 23:57 (twelve years ago) link

i don't think that "inspector norse" is necessarily a retread of "snooze" but i think using the palette of analog synths as opposed to endearingly goofy pianos or accordions or w/e is informed by its success. the new/original productions on 'remaster of the universe' sorta hinted that he might start doing the whole wacky live band thing a whole lot more... i'm glad he decided against that.

not sure if he used analog or digi synths for "eurodans" but i guess that's also got some novelty discopop appeal too

psychgawsple, Saturday, 14 January 2012 00:01 (twelve years ago) link

looks like both bradock and linkwood sampled freddie hubbard's "little sunflower". i feel like the same sample is used a lot in hip hop too... tribe called quest's "the love" for sure, probably others too

psychgawsple, Saturday, 14 January 2012 00:10 (twelve years ago) link

so i guess dilla is ultimately responsible for it

psychgawsple, Saturday, 14 January 2012 00:17 (twelve years ago) link

Nice, i actually know the milt Jackson version of that song, but had no idea it was from that. i'm starting on the Mayer Marathon as well.. so far so enjoying it, made me check wether Pop Ambient 2012 was out yet. (february)

helpful to think that 0:00 of that mix is likely somewhere between 7:00 PM and 9:00 PM and do the math from there.

Stuff from the end of 2011 that caught my attention ... Morphosis Morphosis Morphosis !!! Too Far EP with the Dettmann mixes is immense intense clanging dubby funkiness -

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NEcLa_IWQmU

ARP 3 by Floating Points is best thing he has done so far and it's very house with some great cat noises buried deep in the mix which can make for a slightly confusing listen for cat owners such as myself

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d38xbAFnCSQ

The Mike Huckaby SYNTH remixes of Sistol/Pole are absolutely wonderful too

out comes stanley, Sunday, 15 January 2012 21:42 (twelve years ago) link

Floating Points does a killer line in house/techno DJing, dig out his sets on Rinse with Kyle Hall and every time he appears on the Hessle Audio show and see for your self.

Anyway 2012 house yay!

Think of should go to one of FP's nights at plastic people one of these months... (is it selfish/gauche/RONG! of me to want him to just pump out nothing but house bangers like arp3 and vacuum boogie?)

That Sotofett is great. Expecting good things from the Sex Tags crew this year. Not exactly house I guess but I'm keen to get my hands on one of Rush Hour's James Mason reissues. Discogs prices have been crazy in the last few years.

Another belatedly discovery of 2011 but why didn't anyone tell me about the Margaret Dygas self-titled on Perlon? Very much a dry, skeletal affair, typical of the label I guess - I'm not the biggest expert but on at least a superficial level it's very much like Villalobos' "Alcachofa" texturally - but there's enough darkness to remind me of Chloe while moments such as the live drums on this remind me of Four Tet:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KIYXlDhb-hQ

I don't want to use the m-word but there's a reason that whole thing took off and stuff like this makes me kinda miss it.

what is the hot creations thing? i usually don't know what people mean when they say this. i believe there is a wolf + lamb thing that i also don't get

karl...arlk...rlka...lkar..., Tuesday, 24 January 2012 18:28 (twelve years ago) link

hot creations thing = lee foss "u got me", miguel campbell "something special", danny daze "your everything", hot natured "forward motion", clockwork "it's you again", etc.

it's not too crazily different than the wolf + lamb thing, but with (usually) more prominent vocals/pop hooks. it's lee foss and jamie jones' label idk

psychgawsple, Tuesday, 24 January 2012 19:21 (twelve years ago) link

no, i mean, i get that its a label with songs, i like a lot of them, but the way people talk about it leads me to think that it is something extra-musical which they don't like about hot creations

karl...arlk...rlka...lkar..., Tuesday, 24 January 2012 19:22 (twelve years ago) link

I don't get it either. Maybe it sounds better at a rooftop party in LA or poolside in Miami? The plodding house beats, grating vocals and corny R&B samples. All I know is to AVOID Hot Creations/Hot Natured nights in London LIKE THE PLAGUE. Topless, sweaty 17 yr olds in sunglasses pushing on the dance floor.. no thanks.

donna rouge, Tuesday, 24 January 2012 19:55 (twelve years ago) link

My experience with sweaty 17y/o Londoners has been more tedious and gross than anything else. Makes sense, since Hot Creations, Wolf and Lamb, et al make tedious and awful music that's by and large to be avoided like the plague, shirtless guys or no.

But that's just me.

has anyone heard some of the wolf + lamb mixes where they get on the mic? in theory i'm all for a bit of innovation in the dj box but it is incredibly cringey, sounds like a bad teen disco in suburban dublin when he's roaring "when the beat drops, i wanna see how low y'all can go!!" - albeit with jesse pinkman accents.

this hot creations/crosstown rebels sound was pretty refreshing when it first came out. "l word", "forward motion", "without you" are aces. but then they keep retreading the formula to the point that it became boring and predictable. I can't stand Maceo Plex.

re: Todd Terje

the new/original productions on 'remaster of the universe' sorta hinted that he might start doing the whole wacky live band thing a whole lot more

His remix of Bjorn Torske's Langt Fra Afrika is more along these lines - I hear a real bossa nova influence in it, it's fun enough but kinda disappointing in the context of his current run of original material.

my understanding is that soundso, soundstore and TSOS are all aliases of soundhack, maybe better known around these parts as the dude behind the sound stream records?

the soundstore track came out on the panoramabar 03 sampler

the TSOS track came out on the sound stream 2011 sampler

not sure when soundso is coming out ... could be untitled for a reason?

New Andres 12'' debut on his own label La Vida. Andres is one that really needs no introduction, but for those unfamiliar here it is: Andres, aka DJ Dez, is one of Detroit's unsung heros of underground music. Since the late 90's Andres has built up an extremely respectable catalog of that blurs the boundaries between genres, most notably his records on KDJ and Mahogani Music. Not to forget, DJ Dez is also Slum Village's DJ, has recorded many hip hop instrumental on Hipnotech Records, and his hand is on countless other Detroit records. Definitely one of the most consistent producers we've got here whose music can be summed up in one word: Quality!

and re the h-house thread: if you sift through the tired arguments about whether it's 'proper' dance music or not you will find strong recommendations for the new ital full length, and some talk about the blondes full length (which is also p good imo). also people seem to like those new peaking lights remixes on 100% silk.

i'm curious, would people call the Voices From The Lake album dub techno?

I wouldn't, personally, but I like the way that it mines some of the same territory.

lukas, Monday, 12 March 2012 22:47 (twelve years ago) link

think that album might be too subtle for me. Like it's cool when some chords come in or whatever but it's also just kind of a relief from the tedium

Number None, Monday, 12 March 2012 23:04 (twelve years ago) link

I haven't heard the full album, but the couple of tracks I've heard I've liked a lot. More than dub techno, they remind me of the "ambient acid" stuff that was coming out of Cologne in the mid-90s, like Khan & Walker's Empire State Building, or Air Liquide's early space epics. (And I think Mike Ink came from that scene too, so the Gas comparison is not out of place.)

Hi. i've been lurking around here for a while now and have a techno related question. Not sure where best to put it so I thought I'd start here.

I’m planning a trip to Berlin in April, specifically to see/hear Dettmann at Berghain. Frustrtingly, I can’t get any information from Berghain about when he is likely to be playing. The listing for the day in question (14th April) says the running order is Orphx LIVE, Mike Parker, Adam X, Fiedel, Marcel Dettmann. Presumably, Orphyx will kick off at 23:59 on the Friday. Do any of you know what time Dettmann is likely to play, based on this listing?

neilasimpson, Friday, 30 March 2012 13:05 (twelve years ago) link

you need to get in the berlin mindset

the late great, Friday, 30 March 2012 14:41 (twelve years ago) link

Yeah I'm a lurker on this thread and not some major league techno head by any account but o_O at someone going to Berghain wanting to know exactly what time a specific DJ is coming on.

Hey neilasimpson-

This was some time ago (2006) but I was able to get the schedule for the performers at Berghain from the Hardwax record store earlier that day. I remember there were flyers available for the night in question. I also asked one of the people behind the counter and he seemed to know all about it.

llooped, Friday, 30 March 2012 21:03 (twelve years ago) link

maybe if you go to hardwax you can ask dettmann in person

the late great, Friday, 30 March 2012 22:59 (twelve years ago) link

^^ pro tip

mh, Friday, 30 March 2012 23:14 (twelve years ago) link

If you want to visit record stores in Berlin, I'd totally recommend Spacehall, they have tons of cool stuff, especially if you want dig into older house/techno/trance/ambient. It's absolutely the best electronic music record store I've ever seen (Hardwax was a disappointment compared to it), everytime I've been to Berlin I've spent like 100-200 euros just there.

Tuomas, Friday, 30 March 2012 23:36 (twelve years ago) link

voices from the lake is a trip ... it's like four bars of acid house stretched out to six or eight minutes in a way that sometimes sounds like kompakt (prologue is german, right?) and sometimes sounds like pacou

the late great, Saturday, 31 March 2012 07:26 (twelve years ago) link

at the same time it also has this really awful world music / hippie drum circle thing happening on some tracks and it doesn't help that the background drones sound like digital didgeridoo after awhile

the late great, Saturday, 31 March 2012 08:11 (twelve years ago) link

Berghain posts the lineup (and start times) on their website, but maybe only closer to the date in question? And you're definitely better off trying to get in on Sunday morning (although I haven't tried it personally).

Cosign on Tuomas' Spacehall recommendation, if you're looking for two hundred 90's techno compilations you've never heard of before, that's the place.

big deal that's what my closet looks like

the late great, Saturday, 31 March 2012 09:16 (twelve years ago) link

ok, thanks! for all of your advice re berghain (and berlin).

"o_O at someone going to Berghain wanting to know exactly what time a specific DJ is coming on."

Basically, I'm well fussy about my techno, plus, I've seen Dettmann a few times now in Glasgow and am keen to see him specifically at Berghain, hence my hunt for specific info. I've heard his sets can be pretty legendary.

I had thought about trying hardwax so will do so if the info doesn't appear on the berghain page.

"Heh, I'm going to Berlin for the first time in about a month, was sort of wondering about that. How late into the afternoon do things run; i.e. does it make sense to just get up early and make it there for 10 AM?"

My understanding is that it runs from 23.59 on the Friday right through to some point on Sunday night. The main room was relatively empty on the Sunday morning but the panorama bar was pretty rammed. Advice from locals when I was there in October last year was that 6am is the time to go.

Yeah, the stuff Boys Noize does with Erol is a lot more Alkany than the usual BN schtick. I don't think it's that BN is inconsistent so much as he's really affected by who he's working with.

Love MJC, looking forward to hearing the mix.

Tim F, Thursday, 12 April 2012 21:46 (twelve years ago) link

it's really really really good

it does take awhile to warm up and there is some tubular bells type mellowness upfront but around the fifth track it starts to get jacking and gets more and more jacking until the end

this is probably my favorite commercial mix i've heard since the elijah and skiliam rinse thing and i keep up on that stuff

the late great, Thursday, 12 April 2012 21:54 (twelve years ago) link

that's probably not a good comparison

was trying to think of what traditional house mix i've enjoyed this much and i had to go back kind of far, maybe motor city drum ensembles dj kicks, but that's not as housey. the middle of this is really jacking, reminds me of labels like classic but with a lot more space and swing in the beats

the late great, Thursday, 12 April 2012 22:04 (twelve years ago) link

Folks, check out Ghilbi: http://ghibli.bandcamp.com/album/2011

I'd love to hear thoughts about this dude.

heiswagger (rennavate), Thursday, 12 April 2012 22:10 (twelve years ago) link

DL'ed the Ghilbi thing awhile back, dude really needs to take it easy with the harsh eq's and dynamics processing. There are some cool ideas on the album but it's impossible to listen to because it's brickwalled to shit.

All Flowers Must Fade, Thursday, 12 April 2012 22:33 (twelve years ago) link

what is brick-walled?

the late great, Thursday, 12 April 2012 23:32 (twelve years ago) link

i am assuming it means the waveform is one huge solid rectangle because its what it sounds like, and i agree, the idea seems pretty good if basic (its just bangalter-style filter house?) but i just want to turn it off

the late great, Thursday, 12 April 2012 23:38 (twelve years ago) link

brickwalled usually means compressed so that everything is max volume and/or clipping all over the place

mh, Thursday, 12 April 2012 23:43 (twelve years ago) link

btw audible clipping... well, I am sure it has been used as snd or Mark Fell solo or someone else as a cool effect, but it is bullllshiiiit

mh, Thursday, 12 April 2012 23:43 (twelve years ago) link

That's a fair point about the Ghibli. All of it is sampled from YouTubes, which is probably a big reason for its shitty mastering.

heiswagger (rennavate), Thursday, 12 April 2012 23:45 (twelve years ago) link

even so, just turning down the gain when mastering the track would probably help matters

the late great, Thursday, 12 April 2012 23:46 (twelve years ago) link

Yeah, it's partially a gain issue, and partially the fact that there's a filter people for some reason select that maximizes

mh, Thursday, 12 April 2012 23:48 (twelve years ago) link

In his defense, 2011 is "just a bunch of demos and beats that weren't mastered or anything," in his own words. Any mastering issues thus make sense. I think the songs that can be streamed from his upcoming album, Rare Pleasures, are a better indication of what he can do with a proper mix and master: http://ghibli.bandcamp.com/ I think "Sixteen Moons" is quite good.

So, my trip to Berlin didn't come off this weekend. Although Berghain did eventually publish set times on its website. Dettmann was on 8am-11am on the Saturday morning which is about the worst time imaginable, for me anyway.

Just listening to that Ewan Pearson mix. There's something about his mixes which I love, despite a lot of the tracks in isolation being ones I would probably avoid like the plague if I heard them, he's very talented weaving together a unified sound.

coal, Friday, 20 April 2012 08:48 (eleven years ago) link

I'm not saying there's a trainwreck but some transitions are just too fast and sudden, like track 1 to track 2. And the flow isn't so hot either. Maybe this is what happens when you plan to make a mix with your and your friends' tracks only.

dan138zig (Durrr Durrr Durrrrrr), Friday, 20 April 2012 08:54 (eleven years ago) link

To be fair, I think that's just how he mixes records, at least that's how he DJed when I saw him, although I wasn't so hot on it then either.

EDB, Friday, 20 April 2012 08:57 (eleven years ago) link

When I've seen him DJ in clubs I haven't got into him, but I've been liking this mix a lot. As someone who almost always goes for a long blend by default when mixing myself - and sometimes wishes I had the guts to just slam them next tune in, I always like to hear people mixing the other way and going for those 80s style quick transitions, they're what I found most interesting in people like Mala or Michael Mayer.

yeah, i wonder why i like it so much. i think its really just that opening. and honestly its probably just cuz it reminds me a little of the alan parsons project at the beginning. and i kinda gravitate toward progressive house (or trance) that reminds me of prog rock. i can see that guy providing good backing tracks for a pop singer. and making that work.

i know this is dec 2011 ... and i was not particularly expecting to be that impressed by this because hissing thumping greyscale post-berghain serious techno yadda yadda yadda ... mainly just bought it because i still have a boner for DELTA (the artist who did the cover, not the dj) and what the hell, i kind of have a boner for delta funktionen too

but damn ... this is THEE SHIT if you're still looking for something to match dettmann's immense berghain 02 mix

the late great, Saturday, 12 May 2012 04:55 (eleven years ago) link

whoops, well, click through to the pic if you like

i'm not sure what to say about it, i mean it's basically just straightforward contemporary techno and neither the tracks themselves nor the mixing are next-level in any obvious way you can point to but it's like, perfectly-formed or whatever, i just listened to it on repeat like three times in a row and did the same last night too (grabbed it on tuesday iirc) and it's been awhile since i've had that reaction to a straight-ahead techno mix

the late great, Saturday, 12 May 2012 04:58 (eleven years ago) link

not sure what to say about that mix. listened to it once and never have the urge to pick it up again. I just feel it's like a bunch of tracks mixed together without any real flow.

dan138zig (Durrr Durrr Durrrrrr), Saturday, 12 May 2012 13:44 (eleven years ago) link

well it depends what you mean by "flow", i mean it is called "inertia" and it has that endless cycling vibe of alot of my favorite machinic techno (things like mid-to-late period tresor recs that just sort of pound away like a well-tuned car engine doing a steady 100 mph on the freeway)

i have to admit i'm not necessarily a huge fan of 80-minute long build-ups and breakdowns and i suppose that's why i can listen to it three times in a row, it's much more about creating and maintaining a (steely-gray, polished but murky) atmosphere rather than masturbating the listener

the late great, Saturday, 12 May 2012 18:42 (eleven years ago) link

"i'm not necessarily a huge fan of 80-minute long build-ups and breakdowns"

hmmm maybe that's the key to our difference in appreciating this mix. I'm a fan of 20-minute buildups and then that "we're on" moment comes at the 25th minute or so.

dan138zig (Durrr Durrr Durrrrrr), Sunday, 13 May 2012 00:38 (eleven years ago) link

while this mix starts with a BANG from the first second. I wondered, seriously? where's the buildup?

dan138zig (Durrr Durrr Durrrrrr), Sunday, 13 May 2012 00:50 (eleven years ago) link

i understand what you're saying but personally i think that sort of things tends to work better IRL than in a recorded context, and certainly i wouldn't want to listen to stuff like that all of the time

what I've heard off the Justin Martin album is shaping up really nicely, the sound palette definitely fits into the last couple years of dirtybird's Metalheadz homages.

That is impressive to my ears. I had passed on checking it out til now because the Dirtybird sound had become so stale from what I heard. I should give them another shot. Did they explicitly say they were paying homage to Metalheadz? Kind of funny because I'm pretty sure the club where they got their start was formerly my home for many a boisterous evening of d&b supplied by various visitors from London, etc.

those steve pickton tracks on soul jazz are amazing. i keep planning to pick up his paul w teebroke album as well as "past movements" but never get around to it. really love "fromtheoldtothenew" and his mo'wax stuff is all-time. on the other hand i'm still not sold on the b12, a.r.t. or peacefrog material.

The new album by Lauer (one half of Arto Mwambe) is hitting the spot for me right now. The last track, 'Trainman' is particularly great.

I notice that Tensnake has done two remixes, one substitled 'Franceman' the other 'Tranceman'. Stoked for those.

For all the Running Back love around here, I am surprised no one has mentioned the B.D.I. record. It is the most interesting and adventurous music Gerd has released in awhile:

B.D.I. - Paper Tears (Same Victories Same Mistakes)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9DuqC5ljtaw

On related note, the new Citizen's Band record on Live at the Robert Johnson is worth looking into. Unfortunately, Broken Rome is not posted on youtube in it's entirety. It is a nice slice of claustrophobic house. It is a bit out of place from the usual "deep" sounds they release. I'd like to hear more of it.

"I totally get what you mean, I love new and old styles of house myself, but I can't stay repeating what I did and played in 1993, I feel so stagnant doing that. I try to still keep the groove of things I love, and I always keep a very open mind, there are serious soulful places I play like southportweekender, and I see just how far I can go before people start scratching their heads, and vice versa in other places that are a bit more techy. In saying this I have always played music I love, and I make music the same way. If I didn't I would stop today right now, It's all love for me, I have a lot of respect for other people and DJ's views who come to see and hear me, and I hope to continue to do what I love, and for people to enjoy it. Feedback is all always appreciated, it helps me improve. With Love and respect to everyone, Kerri"

Just finished a rum to KC's RA podcast, felt that the last 40 mins were better than the first hour. Possibly something to do with him pulling tracks that are 'a snapshot'. I read this as him not really planning in advance what he was going to play. I respect that, too many podcasts appear to be trying to capture someone's cool tastes. The Boiler Room mix he did retraced a lot of 90's music and was really fantastic.

coal, Saturday, 30 June 2012 10:20 (eleven years ago) link

i think we talked about that somewhere else too

i like all of the restoration EPs i've heard but they can sometimes be sort of monotonously banging and finding them is tough and pressings are maybe not the best i understand. the lucretio and marieu tracks are mostly awesome, i think it's the xenogears tracks and guest spots i'm not always convinced by

i think i would actually say i prefer the lucretio and marieu solo EP releases on range gate and machine state labels (respectively) i think a little more

hardhouse banter (tpp), Sunday, 1 July 2012 22:36 (eleven years ago) link

so what didn't you like about the manolo ep? "why you love me" is actually a bit of an outlier, most of the earlier stuff is less samples, more synths and 909, less house and more techno, less swing. more UR than moodymann. authentic shitty dry sound of crap pressings.

i would say my favorite thing so far w them is "quarto" from the blawan + cops thing, there are def marieu and lucretio solo tracks that compare favorably both on their individual labels and restoration but they aren't as heavy or swung as the new ones.

As it should be, too many DJs are precious and only allow super-slick polished mixes (probably cleaned-up after the fact or with edits) rather than keeping the raw energy of an in-the-moment recording.

Is this new Shed album as unimpressive to people as a review I skimmed implied? Starting to listen now and it's not grabbing me necessarily, but seems reasonable

your native bacon (mh), Thursday, 2 August 2012 14:54 (eleven years ago) link

This is obviously a superficial reaction, but calling your record "the killer" with a close up of a speaker smacks of disposable big room club albums. Seems kind of incongruous for a shed album. Oh yeah, the track and a half from it I heard in the record store yesterday sounded quite nice, at least to the extent that I went up to find out what it was.

EDB, Thursday, 2 August 2012 15:32 (eleven years ago) link

And good lawd does his ellipsis remix suck. Ok, it's doesn't suck, but given what Shed's capable of it should have been waaaaaaaaaaaay more interesting than a lot of unneccesarily skittery drum rolls over the same basic elemetns but made boring. True, you can't expect him to just keep making variations of big ass 4/4 beats over big ass piano/synth lines, but ellipsis could have gone from already achieving total heavyiosity to even heavier heavyiosity.

EDB, Thursday, 2 August 2012 15:45 (eleven years ago) link

I love that remix! It's way better than the original anyway

Number None, Thursday, 2 August 2012 16:04 (eleven years ago) link

nah the shed album is really good

he basically pulls this each time anyway - people who had been all over wax and eqd had the same reaction to the traveller, people who had been all over soloaction had the same reaction to shedding the past

i think as usual the production is amazing and the sound is super creative

On that note, can we talk about the total ace-ness that is Howling (+ Ame Remix).

The subtle bowl-you-over effect of Ame in their usual excellence. I remember being pretty indifferent to it when I first heard it, but hearing dixon play it a few nights later I (not recognizing it) Shazamed it four times just to find out what it was (rarely will I try more than twice).

Anyways, it's grown on me even more since, and yeah, it's gorgeous.

It's a beefier Middleton'd take, but the use of a gimmicky non-melodic hook and looping quasi-techno backing is exactly the kind of minimal tech-house crossover I got so bored of, just before the more deeper sounds in house started to gain traction again a few years back.

Quite amazed no-one has put this on Youtube yet as it's been out since January, but one my favourite house drops of the year is in this track:

dsb, Saturday, 13 October 2012 15:50 (eleven years ago) link

That Smallpeople clip is great, haven't heard anything else from the LP but looking forward to it. Ach those funky funky Germans. The STL song is a bit formulaic, but my impression could be limited by my crappy speakers. Andres 'Seasons So Long' is solid quality but the other two seem somewhat uninspired, harking back to the early-noughties lounge house that had me ready to renounce deep house forever.

I like this new direction FaltyDL is headed in, although his BiS mix was wildly inconsistent. He did admit he's not much of a DJ, more of just a producer:

"vatican shadow's ghosts of chechnya LP"

Without knowing anything about it, this already sounds like the most dreary and bleak record ever.

Matt DC, Thursday, 29 November 2012 12:22 (eleven years ago) link

xpost yeah it does sound a bit country and western to me. it's in that gerd panorama bar mix, pretty cool but given "it's you" is one of my all-time favourites it doesn't really do it. i can't get why people would pay so much as that's a record that you'll play once or twice and then never again, to me.

Heterocyclic ring ring (LocalGarda), Thursday, 29 November 2012 12:30 (eleven years ago) link

Prosumer really is the best, i nearly had a wee fit the other week when he dropped an m-series tune with a diva house tune on top for its entirity making an otherwise dreary night in hackney wick a bit magic (as long as i kept my eyes closed).

Whats the end of year feelings then? Ive not been DJing much this year so the compulsions to keep up has faded a bit. I do love a good december list frenzy, Ive been working in parties every weekend but theyve been of the tech house variety so pretty low on stand outs.
