Why does Lady Gaga get a free pass from hipsters?

Lady Gaga is basically singing Britney Spears songs (I actually though it was Britney the first time I heard Poker Face), but since she dresses like Fischerspooner and acts like an "artist" she's given a free pass? Sure, she might actually be able to sing, but I don't see the Cobrasnake crowd championing Christina Aguilera.

it should be a policy to not respond to makeitpop threads but the answer to this one is easy: besides not knowing what you even mean by hipsters, or even if hipsters are giving a free pass to gaga, or if anyone should even care, i think the answer is largely because for a long while before she was a pop star gaga was a performer in presumably hip nyc clubs doing burlesque stuff and the like. she has street cred to put it one way, as opposed to brit or xtina

Most of the really big boosts of Lady Gaga I've seen have come from critics who both like chart-pop and like the idea of a performer with a story, a self-determined visual aesthetic, a backstory, a soundbite-friendly interview style etc.

These aren't Geir-people (they still listen to Britney regardless) but the "she's the new Madonna" claim doeshave traction for these types.

They're both gay and straight. My tl;dr post about vacuous pop didn't really go into why people would like gaga (or why gay people would) but I would say a specifically or self-consciously "gay" appreciation of Lady Gaga would also include an in-built appreciation for her ridiculousness - the fashion shoots and photographs that go beyond wacky and into disastrous territory, the ludicrousness of her claims for herself, the way her music can seem generic and idiosyncratic at the same time etc. etc.

Whereas the not-specifically-gay version would usually play down the appreciation-of-failure side of things.

Having said that, I don't think her commercial success is founded on either types of people.

no her commercial success is founded on the fact that she was the first woman to successfully plant her flag at the top of Mount Hipster, apparently

The gays are okay with her. It's enough.

Why does ilx hate her so? Is she really overexposed in places that aren't Australia? Because here she can be one of the handful of songs occasionally played on commercial radio that you don't mind.

i find her interesting because she's become famous without being particularly good looking. until she arrived, the pop world was pretty straightforward in terms of the importance placed upon one's looks. it doesn't seem to matter with her, which i guess is either a marketing triumph, or a testament to her abilities as a performer, or a bit of both, i suppose.

I think deej is otm here, at least in my hometown people only listen to her because they play her at clubs. So it's the sort of shit I've heard my friends play while dressing up before going to the club. I haven't met noone that really knows her backstory or owns her record. "Yesterday in the car ride home from daycare, "Poker Face" came on and my four-year-old said, "I hate this song. When she says pa-pa-pa-poker I think she is going to poke me wif a screwdriber." First, I had never heard him use the word hate. Second, I'm a fan of the song but I kinda think his description tells a deeper story of why many are not.

Does anyone else remember being bombarded LG with full page ads on the myspace login screen for like a month and then huge banner ads after that?

Some folks are making it sound like she had some kind of organic home grown success. You don't get that kind of promo without a lot of corporate PR dollars behind you. It seems like they have spent a lot of money to push her image and her single into Clear Channel radio. Not that it is shocking or unusual for this to happen with pop music, but in her case it seemed really evident in a way that you wouldn't see with a Britney.

Lady Gaga's all woman.

That's what her manager's asserting after an up-skirt photo of the pop star sparked rumors that she's a hermaphrodite. The photo, taken from video shot at England's Glastonbury festival, reveals a bulge between Gaga's legs -- a bulge that could have been caused by undergarments, a bad angle, or, as some blogs would have you believe, a penis.

Bossip.com alleged that Gaga said this when asked about the subject:

"It's not something that I'm ashamed of, just isn't something that I go around telling everyone. Yes. I have both male and female genitalia, but I consider myself a female. It's just a little bit of a penis and really doesn't interfere much with my life. The reason I haven't talked about it is that it's not a big deal to me. Like come on. It's not like we all go around talking about our v***. I think this is a great opportunity to make other multiple gendered people feel more comfortable with their bodies. I'm sexy, I'm hot. I have both a **** and a p*****. Big f******g deal."

ABCNews.com asked Gaga's manager if the "Poker Face" singer is a hermaphrodite and if she said the above quote. His reply:

"This is completely ridiculous."

Gaga's sexuality has been the subject of intense speculation ever since she told Rolling Stone magazine that she considers herself bisexual, though her attraction to women is purely physical.

"I think I'm changing what people think is sexy," she told the magazine in May.

In June, she elaborated on the issue to USA Today, saying, "I don't think being gay or being bisexual or being sexually free is anything that should be hidden. Everybody has a right to their secrecy, of course, but I don't feel particularly shy about it. It is who I am. I sing very openly about it in my music, so I suppose I could say that I choose not to hide it in interviews because I don't care to hide it and, two, because it is very obvious in my music that I like women."

But apparently, that doesn't mean she's toting a disco stick of her own. Consider the Glastonbury festival photo a wardrobe malfunction, not a coming out.

I like Scott's review, a few minor quibbles aside (for example, the Krusty good/evil switch at the start is rather far fetched, but will resonate with Pfork readership who are used to seeing Gaga as a disposable, "evil" pop star and are now faced with seeing "Bad Romance" and "Paparazzi" in Pfork's Top Tracks of 2009, then a 7.8 rating for her newest EP).

What I found most immediately telling, though, was the blurb on the main Pfork page, which more or less validates Geir Hongro's view that OMG you guys, she is not just a pop star, she is a SONGWRITER, goddamnit!

Lady Gaga's second record, containing "Bad Romance" and "Speechless", finds her coming into her own as both a songwriter and a pop star.

Makes me wonder if the blurb wasn't written by Scott, given that he doesn't mention a damn thing about songwriting in his actual review...

Salvador Dali Parton (Turangalila), Wednesday, 13 January 2010 21:16 (fourteen years ago) link

i.e. not from Scott's review.

What Scott does say is that Gaga draws from a variety of pop divas including Britney:

"In "Bad Romance" she alters whoever Lady Gaga the Pop Star might be into any number of female types-- at times recalling Britney Spears, Madonna, an Anime character, Angelique, Christina Aguilera, and Amy Winehouse. In that sense, she's a perfect 21st century pop icon-- a regular person willing to manipulate herself into whatever it takes at any given moment to be a star."

...

"Elsewhere on The Fame Monster, she morphs into other stars-- Freddie Mercury on "Speechless", ABBA on "Alejandro", Madonna on "Dance in the Dark", Britney Spears on "Telephone", Kylie Minogue on "Monster", and Christina Aguilera on "Teeth". Yet instead of hopelessly retro, it comes off very modern, in part because U.S. pop and hip-hop is currently drawing heavily from Europop, hi-NRG, and dance music."

Lex if you could control your nausea when clicking on a pitchfork link I reckon you'd find that your and Scott's takes on nu-Gaga are actually very close to one another. Scott's Krusty the Clown opener is basically a variant on your Trojan Horse metaphor - though of course it doesn't imply the sense of strategy which the Trojan Horse model contains.

Tim F, Wednesday, 13 January 2010 21:43 (fourteen years ago) link

where did this britney stuff come from?

Well, to quote two passages from today's Pfork review, for starters:

In "Bad Romance" she alters whoever Lady Gaga the Pop Star might be into any number of female types-- at times recalling Britney Spears, Madonna, an Anime character, Angelique, Christina Aguilera, and Amy Winehouse.

Elsewhere on The Fame Monster, she morphs into other stars-- Freddie Mercury on "Speechless", ABBA on "Alejandro", Madonna on "Dance in the Dark", Britney Spears on "Telephone", Kylie Minogue on "Monster", and Christina Aguilera on "Teeth".

I think lex is probably right to at least some extent-- seems at least like a change in opportunity coupled with a need to play safe at the start. Whether she assumed from the first move it would all work out like this or pounced when the time was right are two different things, but not sure it matters much in the end. She was savvy and smart either way.

scottpl, Wednesday, 13 January 2010 21:47 (fourteen years ago) link

Don't think many of you give her debut album enough credit; it's not like The Fame Monster is a HUGE leap forward, more like a subtle and effective refining of her modus operandi per se.

I just wish he hadn't adopted the "ilxor" moniker (ilxor), Wednesday, 13 January 2010 21:48 (fourteen years ago) link

isn't the trojan horse a common interpretation at this point? i mean she went on SNL and sat at a piano improvising a bluesy thing - "i used to be a waitress look at me now i heart NYC!" - and lotsa people went oh ok she's a conventional musician, bet she's just doing this pop shit to gain a foothold before expressing herself

zvookster, Wednesday, 13 January 2010 21:54 (fourteen years ago) link

As per ilxor, I imagine she's also learning on the job, getting a better sense as time goes on of how to combine the various elements, which haven't really changed so much as become more elegantly (though not less bombastically) intertwined.

e.g. one clever aspect of "Bad Romance" vis a vis its predecessor "Pokerface" is that the lol-u-weird component (the "rah rah" bit) is deployed discretely as a kind of announcement, leaving a chorus that just shines on its own, meaning you can choose which part of the track you will allow to become yr earworm. Whereas with "Pokerface" the "p-p-p-p-p-p-p-po-pokerface" kind of retroactively bleeds into the otherwise harmlessly tuneful chorus that precedes it, making the chorus seem less memorable by comparison but also making the ostentatious (or fauxstentatious) oddness of the stuttering a more invasive proposition, its edge of annoyance made sharper through mental repetition (you can't help but hear it in your head whenever the song is mentioned).

Tim F, Wednesday, 13 January 2010 21:58 (fourteen years ago) link

Salvador Dali Parton (Turangalila), Wednesday, 13 January 2010 22:04 (fourteen years ago) link

people pick the worst possible threads to bump here all the time (for instance, "Haiti: WTF?" became the post-earthquake thread and "If you hate J.D. Salinger sooooooo much" the official RIP thread), at least with this one it's funny to keep reviving it.

We’re slap-bang in the middle of a pop era which is seeing singers knowingly redefining themselves and creating personas. Every single one of them is aping GaGa’s moves. Beyonce wanted a piece of the GaGa action and Rihanna went from being the archetypal ghetto hustler to someone between the two.

The most obviously stupid thing about it is that all of the Gaga fans I know are white. Very white.
Is 'the ghetto' currently full of black folks who really 'get it' and are rollin with Just Dance pumping out of their car stereos, laughing at all of us whities who only get down to Tom Petty and Joanna Newsom? :-(

unpredictable johnny rodz, Monday, 1 March 2010 08:47 (fourteen years ago) link

Generally I find this whole discussion about what black and white people listen to boring (why do they have to listen to different stuff in the first place?), but I still find that black people don't deserve to be underrated in that one believes they are only interested in manufactored and mass produced corporate pop. I would choose to believe black people are also able to understand artistic value in pop music, and pop music as having actual artistic merit rather than just business.

And Lady Gaga's fans are probably mostly white anyway.

Tied Up In Geir (Geir Hongro), Monday, 1 March 2010 09:23 (fourteen years ago) link

And btw I also hope the same goes for white middle class people. That they don't let the upper class moneymen steal all their money with manufactured plastic pop, and that the middle class aren't alone in actually preferring more artistically thought out music.

Tied Up In Geir (Geir Hongro), Monday, 1 March 2010 09:25 (fourteen years ago) link

I'm still laughing/offended at the term 'archetypal ghetto hustler' that's some bullshit...
The argument that black people do not really appreciate music with actual merit is totally false, you just have to look at the history of black culture and music to see that.
As for Rihanna, she is only able to be 'weird and edgy' because she's been so successful and has such an aggressive and smart marketing, production team etc. Plus other artists clearly paved the way like Grace Jones, Kelis, M.I.A and if anyone is aping Lady GaGa it is only because that is what is selling right now. If you don't really write your own lyrics (LIKE BEYONCE) or generally have any creative input into your music/style/image/personality (like Rihanna) then clearly you're only going to be about what will make you lots of dollar. It really just comes down to money imo.

Alternatively, it is a take it or leave it from the big A&R guys at the record companies: "Either you perform the manufactured stuff that we have made for you to top the charts with, or just forget about the entire deal".

(For the extremely slow witted: we publish pieces designed to kick up a fuss about four times a year. The last one was on Florence and the Machine. The Guardian does it many, many, many times a day.) I didn't really think that much of the Mof piece, it just made me laugh out loud so I published it. If I were you I'd probably want to exercise my right by not clicking on my site. I'll really be suffering that 0.00001 pence pinch in my wallet until you and Dom Pass "accidentally" find yourself reading my us again.

But. We're not an indie site. We barely cover any compared to what we do (features wise) on leftfield music, post punk, synth pop, dubstep, metal, electronica. In comparison we barely cover it.

That's all.

Jack White 'Got Quite Into Being Lady Gaga' While Writing New Song

Lady Gaga is a lot of things: songstress, trend-setter, lover of little monsters, and, apparently, an inspiration to White Stripes singer Jack White. He said he thought about how she writes music and "got quite into being Lady Gaga" while writing a track for his band The Dead Weather, called "Sea of Cowards."

Jack said: "I was thinking of the type of song a contemporary musician would write, so I started thinking about Lady Gaga. I started thinking of how she would write the music to this song and got quite into being Lady Gaga in an odd way."

Despite Jack's foray into Lady Gaga musical territory, the rocker insists the group's second album builds on the sound established on their debut, Horehound, which was released last year and was recorded quickly in order to capture the band's energy.
