!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!I VOTED IN THE 2008 ILX ALBUMS & TRAX POLL AND I LIKED IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! (poll now CLOSED)

Message Bookmarked

How it works:

You can vote for up 20 albums AND 20 tracks. That's 40 total. They are not transferable, so you cannot vote for 1 album and 39 tracks.

You may vote in one of two ways: ordered and non-ordered. You can order your list, and I will give 20 points to your #1 ranked item and 1 point to your #20th ranked item. Be sure when sending me your ballot that your top-ranked item is at the top of the list. If you can't be bothered, you can submit an unranked list and each item will receive 10.5 points.

http://photofabrique.com/images/alerts/stop.gifhttp://photofabrique.com/images/alerts/stop.gifhttp://photofabrique.com/images/alerts/stop.gifDO NOT NUMBER YOUR BALLOTS!!! Just tell me that they are ordered (Number one pick on top) or not orderedhttp://photofabrique.com/images/alerts/stop.gifhttp://photofabrique.com/images/alerts/stop.gifhttp://photofabrique.com/images/alerts/stop.gif

Blurbs, anecdotes, etc are welcomed. I will not be emailing people after I tally the votes to solicit blurbs, so if you have something please send it with your ballot. <-----------------this is different than before so please keep it in mind.

http://www.nomaas.org/images/drudge_siren.gifhttp://www.nomaas.org/images/drudge_siren.gifhttp://www.nomaas.org/images/drudge_siren.gifDO NOT FREEFORM TYPE YOUR VOTES; COPY AND PASTE THEM FROM THE NOMINATION LIST INTO YOUR EMAILhttp://www.nomaas.org/images/drudge_siren.gif

I'm not trying to threaten people but I cannot guarantee that your votes will be counted if you don't do the above, because the formatting gets screwy and the find duplicates function ceases to be functional. Since not numbering your ballots and copying and pasting are both less work for y'all so I don't get why people still number their ballots and type them in manually all the time. I'll email you if I get an improperly formatted ballot to ask you to resubmit but still, please, just do it correctly the first time.

Due date: Thursday, January 22nd, 2009, 11:59pm.

Send your ballots to seattleDOTmaryATgmailDOTcom

now get voting! This thread can also be useful for repping and lobbying those with extra votes available, etc. I hope to start the trax results the last week of January and the album results the first week of Feb.

oh christ, the due date is 2009, not 2008, i'll just assume that most of you would pick that up.

Hey, Geir (assuming you read this thread), I'll vote Coldplay on my ballot if you include Kathleen Edwards on yours.

Mordy, Thursday, 15 January 2009 04:28 (fifteen years ago) link

In general, if anyone has a fave band they need a vote for - and I'm already considering them on a shortlist - I'll bump them onto my list for a Kathleen Edwards vote.

Also, Panic! At the Disco is listed by their full name on the tracks list, and by P!ATD on the albums list.

Mordy, Thursday, 15 January 2009 04:43 (fifteen years ago) link

Alright. My ballot is pretty much ready to go. I'll hold onto it a few days, tho, just in case someone wants to do a Kathleen Edwards trade with me.

Someone Still Loves You Evan and Jaron (Tape Store), Thursday, 15 January 2009 05:22 (fifteen years ago) link

Man, I did not have my singles ears on at all last year. I easily found more than 20 albums to rep for (Free Gold! In The Future! You And Me Cherry Red!) but outside of a handful of tracks (Milli, Blind, etc.), I just didn't get enough exposure to have strong opinions on anything… And because I was late whipping up a best-of-08 mixtape, I didn't nom anything as singles (and forgot about that Crystal Antlers EP that I meant to nom for albums, but held back because I thought that maybe EPs didn't count for some reason).

So, assume I'm ignorant but totally willing to listen and link me to some singles so I can hear 'em, because otherwise my ballot's gonna be limp like lettuce.

Man, I did not have my singles ears on at all last year. I easily found more than 20 albums to rep for

I actually have a theory about this. See, this year, I had plenty of singles worth listing and very few albums. And last year I had the same. But the year before I had tons of albums and not enough singles. I don't think it's that the year changes, or even that necessarily my listening habits change. I think it's more like one of those animated jpegs where you can see the dancer moving clockwise, or counterclockwise, but you can't see the dancer move both ways simultaneously. You can either remember albums, or remember singles primarily, but you can't primarily remember both. (Also, I suspect that the years that I can list mostly albums are years that I'm less picky about album filler, and years that I mostly remember singles are years where I want my few albums to be 100% perfect.)

That Cole Medina track is actually called Cole Loves Your Insides Out, and I'm voting for it.

I thought the rules said that there wouldn't be separate votes for remixes, but, for example, Blind and Paper Planes are listed alongside their remixes. I thought votes for all different mixes were meant to just go for the song. (I want to vote for the Club Mix, anyway!)

Matt, what's that Raveonettes album you're voting for? Isn't it called Lust Lust Lust?

i wanted to vote for lust lust lust, but itunes said it was 2007!

the one i voted for is an itunes only EP that came out about a month ago...they also did another one called "wishing you a rave christmas" that is great as well....

but basically beauty dies is great, def in the vein of lust lust lust if a little more cocteau twins-ish

btw here's nomo live, they didn't seem to get much love on ILM and i was suprised, awesome afrobeat type stuff....they are a little weirder/more krautrock on the album, live is much more of a party vibe like this:

***I WOULD LIKE TO ENCOURAGE YOU TO VOTE FOR THE SONG "START SOMETHING" BY MORTEN SORENSEN***

here's what RA had to say about it (and you know you love RA):

When he's done with his day job as one-half of the mega-successful dance act Groove Armada, Tom Findlay sits down and indulges his underground jones as Sugardaddy for Tirk Records. Here, on the mysterious Morten Sorensen's debut EP for the label, you can also hear his smooth hand behind the boards.

I say mysterious not simply because this is Sorensen’s (very) accomplished first 12-inch. But more because his bio reads like a ridiculous Maurice Fulton-esque joke. Chalk it up to my heightened sense of suspicion when it comes things like this, but see if you agree: "Hailing from a small mackerel fishing village in southern Norway, 22-year old Morten Sorensen enjoyed a ten year spell spent in New York whilst his dad worked for the UN’s international maritime commission developing a love of dusty old NY disco that was to irrevocably shape his future."

Bottom line, though? The music's good. The EP's title track rescues a Chic sample from the shelf of almost any disco lover and throws a shriek, synth and bassline underneath. Deep and epic, the track is a seamless cut-and-paste.

[...]

Goddamn illiteracy! I somehow missed Fucked Up and Nomo on the nom list (they woulda easily bumped the last two albums—Grails and Mae Shi—from my list).

That Nomo album is the third solid one from them, but I wish they didn't seem so conservative on their records. They're fucking awesome live, and skronk out a lot more. I mean, I give 'em points for making a third album that's just, like, good-to-great the whole way through, but I wants more!

And seriously, that Vampire Hands album is pretty damn fine. I really want more people to hear it. I found it through Hegelson up there, and have been loving it nearly the whole year now.

Part of the fun of these polls is the slow reveal of the results, and if everyone posts their ballots, some OCD internerds will do the maths and work out what has won, killing the suspense (this has happened before). Why not keep this thread for PIMPIN' TRAX, and people can post their ballots when the results are in, should they wish?

Also, Get Myself Together is indeed great, and there's a nice Todd Terje edit of Glad To Know You on the B-side (which bizarrely I heard playing in Dudley's Pancake House near Finsbury Park - is it on a comp or something?). I'll check out that MORTEN SORENSEN song, too.

I like that his dad worked for the UN’s international maritime commission developing a love of dusty old NY disco . Cool job.

Late pimping for the Zoot Woman single "We Won't Break", which otherwise might be lost given it is a free digital-only teaser from an album which has been delayed two years.

I'd absolutely love this decade of music if this was in fact the sound of today.

Also, I'm feeling old. Given that I've spent the year exploring ethnic and modern academic music, I've only heard 24 of the nominated albums, and only 12 of which I'd be excited to see on a year-end best of. I'm just sending in a list of those, and forgoing additional votes that would say more about my corner of ILM's demographics than exceptional music of the day.

Gah!

I might actually delete this thread temporarily after the ballot has closed, partly to preserve a bit of mystery but also to stop endless personal lists appearing.

Matt DC, Thursday, 22 January 2009 12:27 (fifteen years ago) link

xpost to Lex

(Although I think "doing our lists at the same time" is possibly the only way we'll be thinking alike on this one. Especially given the number of times the words "Animal" and "Collective" appear in close proximity in mine.)

Special topics: Disco, The Common Market (grimly fiendish), Thursday, 22 January 2009 12:28 (fifteen years ago) link

I know that release dates are considered somwhat passe these days but wasn't the Animal Collective album only released last Monday?

Billy Dods, Thursday, 22 January 2009 12:51 (fifteen years ago) link

ILM: always ahead of the curve.

TBH, I think it's a bit too late to worry about that at this stage.

Special topics: Disco, The Common Market (grimly fiendish), Thursday, 22 January 2009 12:52 (fifteen years ago) link

i approve of animal collective votes being split across 2008 and 2009 - hopefully this means the disgusting thing won't appear in either.

Sorry, it's little more than 1. Maybe 4-5? Still, nestled in the bottom of those lists. That's not enough to hit the top 10 (I don't think).

Mordy beware the lurkers. Some people wont admit to voting for certain albums simply because they know they will take abuse from some posters for being "corny indie fuxors".
Animal Collective is a 2009 release, but if it places this year it shouldn't be allowed in next years. Otherwise it will end up like that Annie album(which will probably still end up being in next years poll)

Pfunkboy Formerly Known As... (Herman G. Neuname), Thursday, 22 January 2009 18:16 (fifteen years ago) link

I know I moan like fuck about the NME/Kerrang polls, but on ILX ones I try to stay away from that. I might not agree with some of the albums voted for on the metal poll I'm running, but I'm not going to give abuse to people who took the time & trouble to compile a list and email it in. I appreciate the fact that ilxors take the time to do this. I don't think ilxors should be ridiculed for what they vote for which then makes them to scared to admit it publicly.

gonna rep for bohren un der club of gore here

shook pwns (omar little), Thursday, 22 January 2009 19:09 (fifteen years ago) link

I'd second that

Pfunkboy Formerly Known As... (Herman G. Neuname), Thursday, 22 January 2009 19:19 (fifteen years ago) link

Maelstrom: Hello. Let's please start by discussing the name of your wonderful band. I understand that "bohren" is German for "to bore" or "to drill." (although I'm sure some people might find the irony or the other mening of "bore" too great) Then you have this club of gore thing. What's up?

Morten Gass: The band name has no real meaning in the first place. It just happens the way a lot of band names had their origin from: we were drunk!!! But besides the fact that we had a few beers too many, we managed to put some important words in this name. "Gore / Bohren" stands for horror movies (especially the Italian stuff like Fulci, Bava, Argento, where you can find some pretty nice drilling scenes as well). Gore is also a secret hidden link to a genius Dutch instrumental band called Gore. The first two Gore albums had a big influence on us. "And the Club of" just means that we wanted to be a jazz band. Playing in smoky, dirty nightclubs, just like Sade. Well, as I said, we were drunk.....

shook pwns (omar little), Thursday, 22 January 2009 19:29 (fifteen years ago) link

TVotR is on my list. Obviously. Animal Collective, too: hell, if it's there, I'll vote for it. And I'll vote for it next year, too, because it is fucking awesome (am slightly drunk, on a bus, and listening to it, once again, this time after several pints' worth of reappraising Freud). Fuck iconoclasm in all its many forms.

try posting on the metal poll and see if people there will post. plenty of people there who like more than just metal so would vote in this poll. Ask them nicely and see!

haha, otm. my general boredom with tvotr is unrelated to their critical standing, which surprises me anew every time they end up on all these top 10 lists.

my attitude towards animal collective isn't iconoclastic, it's just total contempt for them

lex pretend, Thursday, 22 January 2009 22:47 (fifteen years ago) link

I liked their old stuff a lot, not heard their new album, but I dont see why anyone would hate them so much. Esp when Kings Of Leon and Coldplay are around.

Pfunkboy Formerly Known As... (Herman G. Neuname), Thursday, 22 January 2009 22:51 (fifteen years ago) link

i'm not exactly fond of them either, but shit like animal collective really does make me realise that they're fundamentally tolerable and not worth hating on

lex pretend, Thursday, 22 January 2009 22:56 (fifteen years ago) link

i like some animal collective stuff, but i can definitely understand someone feeling outsized antipathy for them the same way i do for the flaming lips.

reason to hate kings of leon more than AC: i hear the former somewhere, somehow pretty much every day. don't think i've heard an AC song in several years.

That I can understand. I've never heard Animal Collective on radio or on tv.

I imagine if people haven't voted it's not because they missed this thread the 1000000000000 times it was on the front page, it's because they don't plan on voting or they have been putting it off. if you fall into the latter category then for shame!!! submit now!!

Pfunkboy Formerly Known As... (Herman G. Neuname), Friday, 23 January 2009 00:57 (fifteen years ago) link

Two hours, I'll do it!

i have 87. i'm not going to stop taking ballots until midnight my time so technically there is still 7 hours left.

Come on ILX we can make it to 100. Still 7 hours left!!

Musically you should try asking on the metal poll thread. More chance of them listening to you than me :)

yeah, no prob, i was asleep at midnight so it's all good.

anyway, as it's 7 hours and 18 minutes past midnight for me, i am closing the poll. thanks to everyone who participated. i'll post little updates over the weekend, and hopefully if everything goes according to schedule i'll start the trax results on monday.

If people can't wait to see results, then head over to ILX METAL ALBUMS OF THE YEAR 2008 RESULTS the top 10 is being announced today. Will be interesting to see if (m)any of them crossover to musically's poll.

BALLS. Not only did I miss the noms, but I wasn't online at all on thursday, and barely any yesterday, so I completely missed this. I somehow doubt that a ballot quite this late would be accepted. BALLS BALLS and thrice BALLS.

emil.y, Saturday, 24 January 2009 14:00 (fifteen years ago) link

noms started in December, so that must have been a long vacation

miss precious perfect (musically), Saturday, 24 January 2009 20:28 (fifteen years ago) link

Hmph. Well, that's quite clearly sarcastic (especially seeing as I have already posted to this thread), but I will clarify: I was offline throughout most of the nomination period due to the utter shiteness of Virgin, and thus missed that round of voting entirely. I have been compiling my list, and was intending to get it in on Wednesday or Thursday, but due to unforseen circumstances I couldn't get online on those days either, so have completely fucked it up.

The only thing that I really care about is that people add 20 extra points to El Guincho and 19 extra to the Chap.

emil.y, Sunday, 25 January 2009 01:53 (fifteen years ago) link

I've made a "controversial decision".

I wish someone had pointed out that Merriweather Post Pavilion was a 2009 album earlier. It really has no place in the poll so I am taking it out. For those of you who voted for it, I will sent you an email and if you respond by tonight you can swap something else in for it. Otherwise, I am going to finish this today so I can start tomorrow.

miss precious perfect (musically), Sunday, 1 February 2009 19:56 (fifteen years ago) link

When I run down the results I will include a little placeholder for it. I don't have anything against telling you now but I'm not quite there yet in the tallying process.

miss precious perfect (musically), Sunday, 1 February 2009 20:13 (fifteen years ago) link

lex pretend, Sunday, 1 February 2009 21:03 (fifteen years ago) link

Lex, speaking as a fellow Animal Collective/Panda Bear hater, I gotta say; You should give Merriweather another chance. Cause it's either great, or I somehow became brainwashed enough to like it.

Mordy, Sunday, 1 February 2009 21:08 (fifteen years ago) link

Yeah, I'm on board with stripping it from the 2008 poll. I'm also on board with loving it, despite hating all the other Animal Collective records.

Johnny Fever, Sunday, 1 February 2009 21:12 (fifteen years ago) link

i gave it one chance and it made me feel nauseous, maybe even worse than that gross panda bear solo record, which i didn't think was possible

lex pretend, Sunday, 1 February 2009 21:21 (fifteen years ago) link

I listened to "My Girls" and I like the synth arpeggios and stuff, cause you know, that's totally my thing when done right, but then they ruin it with Beach Boys vocals, which always make me want to curl into the fetal position. Nauseous is absolutely right.

TACO BIZZLE (The Reverend), Sunday, 1 February 2009 21:23 (fifteen years ago) link

that is a very good controversial decision imo

k3vin k., Sunday, 1 February 2009 21:27 (fifteen years ago) link

xp

subatomic dawg (Ioannis), Sunday, 1 February 2009 21:29 (fifteen years ago) link

the vocals are probably the biggest turn-off for me but i don't know how people can take the shoddy basic-photoshop-filter production, the queasy infantilism or the meandering, aimless, pointless remedial melodies, repeated inanely as though any of them were hooks you needed to hear more than once.

but yeah, his voice. dude cannot sing, like not at all, and it's painful to listen to. and i don't think i've ever seen anyone defend it, which means that even AC fans know deep down how shitty it is.

lex pretend, Sunday, 1 February 2009 21:32 (fifteen years ago) link
