I've never started a Torche thread yet? Shocking.
1st album is one of my fave albums ever and the new one is awesome. You gotta check it out!!! Actually the 1st album got remixed and rereleased. I think I prefer the original one though. New album is out on Hydrahead with vinyl coming on Robotic Empire.

saw torche open for isis last year and isis was a total letdown after these homies. they had energy and looked like they were having FUN, which is more than i can say for isis.
the first record was kinda samey for my tastes, i must admit. new one good, herman?
― BIG HOOS aka the steendriver, Monday, 24 March 2008 03:21 (eighteen years ago)
Very. 1st album was awesome though. Which version did you hear? The In Return ep was excellent too. New one is like heavier but poppier too.
― Herman G. Neuname, Monday, 24 March 2008 03:25 (eighteen years ago)
umm don't remember, hang on
― BIG HOOS aka the steendriver, Monday, 24 March 2008 03:27 (eighteen years ago)
the band prefer the remixed version which is a bit different, but i think the 1st album is perfect and didn't need remixed.
― Herman G. Neuname, Monday, 24 March 2008 03:28 (eighteen years ago)
what does the remix sound like?

This. Is. A. Torche. Exclusive.
― Whiney G. Weingarten, Monday, 24 March 2008 03:31 (eighteen years ago)
The vocals are up a bit and some lead guitar is louder. It works well on a few tracks actually It is worth owning both versions.
― Herman G. Neuname, Monday, 24 March 2008 03:34 (eighteen years ago)
yep officially no idea.
i loved the shit out of like half of it ("erase" is my fucking JAM and i totally wish it was longer but it's perfect as it is) and tbh the other half kinda bored me?
new shit on myspace sounds awesome though.
― BIG HOOS aka the steendriver, Monday, 24 March 2008 03:36 (eighteen years ago)
Make Me Alive is a bonus track on the remastered version.
― Herman G. Neuname, Monday, 24 March 2008 03:40 (eighteen years ago)
Do you have the album with that on it hoos?
― Herman G. Neuname, Monday, 24 March 2008 15:39 (eighteen years ago)
no
― BIG HOOS aka the steendriver, Monday, 24 March 2008 16:13 (eighteen years ago)
Then you have the 1st version. Maybe you would prefer the remixed one then?
― Herman G. Neuname, Monday, 24 March 2008 16:37 (eighteen years ago)
I didn't care much for the first album (I only heard the original version), but In Return surprised me and I really like this new one on first listen. Not sure why exactly but it reminds me of early Helmet, only the equation is weighted more towards metal and less towards hardcore.
I'll see what I think after a few spins. Very promising. Have to listen to the new Ufomammut (I'm so excited!) before I give this further time.
― EZ Snappin, Monday, 24 March 2008 19:05 (eighteen years ago)

― DJ Mencap, Thursday, 27 March 2008 17:02 (eighteen years ago)
I love these guys, especially that one note on their guitar or bass or whatever that is so low it can't be fully replicated on CD. We would listen to these guys at work sometimes and my coworker would pump his fist whenever they hit that note.

― jon /via/ chi 2.0, Tuesday, 1 July 2008 02:26 (seventeen years ago)
As I said on the Boris thread I'm going to the Webster Hall show! Meanderthal is one of my favorite albums of the year so far. And yes, that packaging is amazing. It's similar on the CD, except, you know, small.
I think "Fat Waves" is my favorite song of theirs. But that could change once I get some of their older albums. Are they just as good?
― jonathan - stl, Tuesday, 1 July 2008 02:32 (seventeen years ago)
will also play at ZXZW www.zxzw.nl
― joost666, Tuesday, 1 July 2008 11:07 (seventeen years ago)
after listening to them in myspace - dont they sound like million other bands around?
― Zeno, Tuesday, 1 July 2008 18:09 (seventeen years ago)
I don't think so, I think they've found a largely unoccupied niche. What bands are you thinking of?
― DJ Mencap, Tuesday, 1 July 2008 18:13 (seventeen years ago)
Yeah seriously? If there are other bands like this let me know because I would like them all. I'm thinking specifically of power pop harmonies over Sleep dirges.
― filthy dylan, Tuesday, 1 July 2008 18:18 (seventeen years ago)
for example: http://www.myspace.com/thelovedones
(a general 1st impression, though. i might not recognize the uniqueness after 1st listen)
― Zeno, Tuesday, 1 July 2008 18:20 (seventeen years ago)
for those that don't know they're playing the melvins/mike patton nightmare before christmas in minehead (UK) too.
is it me or is there a distinct whiff of foo fighters about torche, only a bit fuzzier? are they the arena rock band it's OK for the southern lord tribe to like?
― m the g, Tuesday, 1 July 2008 18:20 (seventeen years ago)
I reviewed the new Torche album and mentioned something about a couple of the songs having this skatepunk edge to them which I guess would link up with those guys, but no-one else seems to have spotted this, and it's also pretty atypical of their sound
― DJ Mencap, Tuesday, 1 July 2008 18:23 (seventeen years ago)
"those guys" = The Loved Ones. Have seen Foo Fighters bandied about as well but it's not something I specifically get from them
― DJ Mencap, Tuesday, 1 July 2008 18:24 (seventeen years ago)
Is is possible for a band to sound like MELVINS and ABBA???
― Whiney G. Weingarten, Tuesday, 1 July 2008 18:30 (seventeen years ago)
are you kidding me with that link to The Loved Ones?! I hear nothing in common at all. I thought you were going to link to some sludge band or something
― filthy dylan, Tuesday, 1 July 2008 19:46 (seventeen years ago)
it's too melodic to be sludge - sort of a poppy sludge, you might say:melvins,Queens of the stone age and foo fighters in a brain storm meeting. it sounds nice and they play well, but it's not something i havent heard before. but thats ok too i guess
― Zeno, Tuesday, 1 July 2008 20:06 (seventeen years ago)
anyway, they arouse the risk of deafness, opening for Boris.
― Zeno, Tuesday, 1 July 2008 20:11 (seventeen years ago)
I hear some queens of the stone age, a lot of melvins, and maybe foo fighters circa colour and the shape vaguely very very vaguely. a lot angrier though.
― filthy dylan, Tuesday, 1 July 2008 20:38 (seventeen years ago)
How on earth do you hear Torche as angry?
― call all destroyer, Tuesday, 1 July 2008 20:46 (seventeen years ago)
Yeah, I don't hear the "angry" in their sound either. "Aggressive," certainly. Sort of a mix of joy and frustration. They don't sound a thing like that myspace band Zeno linked to, but I understand the point he's trying to make; there IS a definite skate-punky element in the vocal style and the melodies. "Healer" sounds like it could almost be a Bad Religion song. Which is funny, because I love that song and I can't stand BR. I think that goes to show how much instrumental timbre/production style can sway opinions so easily. If it wasn't for their sludgy sonics, would the same people still like this band?
― telepathy_rock!, Tuesday, 1 July 2008 21:40 (seventeen years ago)
I think I hear the anger in that bomb note they use that sounds like an explosion and can't fully be replicated on CD
― filthy dylan, Tuesday, 1 July 2008 22:42 (seventeen years ago)
Have any of you guys heard his previous band Floor? They were an awesome band. I have both their lps but there should be a cd or vinyl set of unreleased stuff coming at some point which I am excited about.

I saw them in here Denver last week and finally figured out how they get so heavy. They've got a second guitar and bass with super heavy strings tuned really low and aluminum necks.
― Rotgutt, Thursday, 6 November 2008 01:55 (seventeen years ago)
I hate to come off like a moron here.. but.... How do you pronounce Torche?
I'm really liking some this stuff the faster ones on Meanderthal sound like a Big Drill Car/Carcass blend.
― chad, Thursday, 6 November 2008 04:08 (seventeen years ago)
My brother-in-law got me into this band, and after a couple listens I hear a bit of a David Lee Roth thing with the vocals. This isn't a bad thing, mind you.

― HOOS HOOS HOOS on the autosteen (BIG HOOS aka the steendriver), Thursday, 6 November 2008 09:05 (seventeen years ago)

walt mink was good! their drummer was amazing, he was lenny waronker the record company guy's sonand his sister was the main person of the band That Dogand he ended up being Beck's drummer for a long time

I mean, you have a band who has FooFighters-sized radio-ready hooks but is playing them with the textures of extreme metal and doom. It's not Shoenberg's 12-tone theory or something, but it's pretty unique.
― kschoice (Whiney G. Weingarten), Friday, 31 July 2009 14:21 (sixteen years ago)
The way I look at it is, if you saw a messageboard ad for a band described that way (which I don't think is too inaccurate wrt Torche) you would probably think 'fuck that noise' - but there's so many clever touches and awesome hooks being employed within that remit that it totally works. Also in a lot of ways it really is pretty original within the confines of heavy rock music
― splash the praying duck (DJ Mencap), Friday, 31 July 2009 14:21 (sixteen years ago)

A friend recommended Floor many years back. I finally checked out their 2002 album and it's tremendous. It, ahem, floored me on first listen. It took me quite a while to warm up to Torche, who incorporate a wider variety of influences. For pure, gorgeous, single-minded throbbing sound, you can't beat Floor. I only have MP3s and was almost tempted to pay a ridiculous price for the CD. But I look forward to hearing more from Torche. I hope the loss of the guitar player doesn't handicap them too much. They should only get more popular . . . and then reissue all the Floor stuff!

They are. It's a 10xLP set.
― pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Wednesday, 26 August 2009 11:49 (sixteen years ago)
To say the very least, it's been a long time coming. The long-rumored FLOOR box set is not only actually happening... it's nearly upon us. Years in the making, everything this seminal Florida outfit ever recorded is contained within this massive release, including hours of material never previously heard by the public. This insane 10xLP (and one 7") box set should include CDs of the same material as well as an extensive booklet of some lyrics, original artwork, band writings and tons more.
― pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Wednesday, 26 August 2009 22:28 (sixteen years ago)
Awesome! Looks like it'll be around November maybe. I can split it with a friend who prefers vinyl.

It's pretty rare when a band comes along that creates something truly unique. Scarcer still are multiple standout recordings from the same group. Rarest of all is one who amasses a large body of work that varies greatly, yet consistently remains impressive. Southern Florida's FLOOR were around for roughly 10 years and recorded well over a dozen times during their on-and-off existence. Nearly 100 tracks are the result of a decade of persistence amid overall underappreciation, and only in the wake of their demise did underground audio followers finally take note. Their huge body of work yielded only a few officially released records, and most of what the band recorded just collected dust in the vaults. Finally, everything ever laid down to tape by this truly ahead-of-their time(s) outfit has been compiled into one massive release. From the living rooms and basements of 1992 to the studios of 2001/2002, FLOOR had an incredible evolution from the GODFLESH and early-MELVINS-inspired sludge worship, to the unrivaled sugary doom/pop amalgamation which would eventually pave the way for TORCHE, HOUSE OF LIGHTNING and others. The changes in sound from recording-to-recording means the sheer variation of style (and audio fidelity) witnessed throughout this collection is astounding, and when dating these recordings against what would eventually follow, it becomes crystal clear that FLOOR were consistently operating on that fabled "next level".It is with great honor and elation that we are able to present the Below & Beyond Box Set to you. After many years in the making, FLOOR is finally able to conclude their existence with this extensive collection. Ten 12" LPs, one 7" EP, eight CDs and a (roughly) 32-page booklet of writings, photos, lyrics, artwork (and more) are all to be housed in separate jackets contained within a custom cloth-bound box. Each record comes on a different color of vinyl to match to the corresponding artwork, and two etchings accompany recordings that didn't have appropriate flipsides.

We are making 305 copies of this box set, and if the demand is there maybe more at a later date. It's hard to know what the response to this release is going to be, considering the band hasn't been active for over 5 years and had a varied fanbase during their actual existence... so 305 was the number chosen by the parties involved and we're offering up 275 copies to the public now. That all being said, the price for the FLOOR - Below & Beyond Box Set is $250 plus postage. We know this is a huge amount of money, so as a way of thanking those who pre-order, an exclusive t-shirt is being included (that's design+style will only be available with this preorder). If you purchase the box set PLEASE remember to include your t-shirt size in the "notes / comments" section at checkout... this includes any size you may normally be, from Youth Small to Quintuple Extra Large.PLEASE NOTE: An enormous amount of work has gone into this release, but not quite everything is fully ready to go into production. So THIS IS A PRE-ORDER, and we're *hoping* to have the release in your hands by Thanksgiving at the earliest, and Christmas at the latest. Because those purchasing this box set are spending a lot of money, we have built a website with the sole purpose of keeping people who buy this informed on the status of the production. Some details of the project may slightly change as we approach the final artwork adjustments, so please realize the above image is simply a mockup of what the final product will roughly resemble (also feel free to click here to check out a bigger version of the above graphic).Normally we do not like to take pre-orders for records because people (understandably) get impatient and often want to know what the status of the release is... and there are always the inevitable delays too. But due to the sheer cost of producing this beast, we have decided to break our "no pre-orders" rule on this rare occasion. We will do our best to get this done and in your hands as quickly as possible, but highly appreciate your patience and understanding that producing something this large can happen somewhat slowly. The "status" website link will be emailed to you if you place an order, so you can follow along as this beast gets closer and closer to full existence.SHIPPING & PAYMENT DETAILS: Because this is such an expensive item, we MUST ship this to a confirmed address (the same one associated with your PayPal or credit card account), and only via a shipping method that is trackable with a signature confirmation. That means ALL people in the USA must order this via UPS GROUND and be able to sign for the package. It is a bit more expensive and possibly a pain in the ass, but it is also more secure for both the buyer and seller. If you cannot deal with this, please do not order (or find a friend who can comply with this to order for you).ALL INTERNATIONAL ORDERERS: please choose USPS Priority Mail or any UPS shipping method & make sure your shipping address matches the address on your PayPal or credit card account. Please include your full telephone number in the "notes / comments" section as well. Also, we can NOT put a lower value on the customs forms, so please don't order if you can't pay any local taxes there may be on an incoming $250 US item. And last but not least, if you order other items along with this box set they will NOT ship until the box sets are finished. If you want other items in the immediate future, please place a separate order for those & we will get them out to you ASAP.A major personal thank-you is due to Anthony, Steve and Henry for braving everything that went into this, and for trusting us to finally do the band justice with this massive release. An additional thank you to everyone else who contributed as well (be it artwork, musicianship, moral support or otherwise), and to you for still being interested after all these years. Namasté!

They're opening for Coheed & Cambria in May at the Congress in Chicago. I hesitate to pay $40 with fees if they're just gonna play 30 min though. I'm hoping they'll headline their own shows at smaller venues. I guess it depends on if they have an album release coming...
― Fastnbulbous, Tuesday, 9 March 2010 18:13 (sixteen years ago)
Supposedly they do have a new album out later this year. Man, I don't know, I'm all happy for them getting the exposure but I don't know if I could pay that much to put up with Coheed & Cambria fans for a 40 minute or less Torche set. I think I'll wait for the inevitable headlining tour after the album drops.

feel totally bad for these guys, they're a good band & this sucks, but let me reiterate as I do every time this happens: if you tour, load everything out from the car into the room your'e staying in every night. I had a longer rant but fuck a lecture, it's not the band's fault somebody robbed them but seriously touring bands, keep your unreplaceables at line-of-sight at all times. at all times, ok? thank you.

This thing is great, love it from front-to-back. Could do without seeing the Foo Fighters pop up in nearly every Torche discussion though. Sure, there was a time when that kinda fit, but I don't hear anything on this one that sounds even remotely like them. Not calling anyone in this thread out solely, I've also seen this in quite a few reviews of this.

i like torche, a lot, but they sucked live last night. like, a whole set of thudding muddy sludge instead of the pop stuff. homeboy has never been great at the straight up thud and anyway this is new orleans and we have more muddy sludge than we know what to do with.
(kylesa were boring/pleasant as usual)
― adam, Thursday, 23 September 2010 21:00 (fifteen years ago)
i know people are big on floor or cavity or whatever but the best floor song is "downed star" which is basically a downtuned hum song.
new ep is really good though, wish they'd played some of that stuff.

Man, Torche ruled live when I saw them open for Boris. Very fun set.
I kinda like the Foo Fighters too, at least many of their singles, but I look for completely different things from each band. I won't hate on anyone for hearing a similarity, but "sounds like a sludgier Foo Fighters" has become sort of a lazy shorthand for Torche at this point.

― call all destroyer, Friday, 8 October 2010 02:41 (fifteen years ago)

the new one has more straightup melodic stuff but meanderthal has the better songs overall. i guess just listen to both. but the song markers posted is VERY reminiscent of "across the shields" which is one of the best two meanderthal songs.

Harmonicraft has become my go-to headphone record while working out at the gym. My gym is on the 2nd floor of a building across the street from a beach and has floor-to-ceiling windows that look out at the ocean.
This evening while on the cardio machine, with the sun setting and my heart rate way up, just as the chorus of "Kicking" dropped i saw a Humpback Whale breach and splash down in to the shimmering water. It was awesome.

new to Torche. obv into stoner stuff but I had a hard time convincing myself to listen to Torche because of the descriptions given of them; I like my sludge/stoner stuff to be dank and depressing and the idea of poppy melodies and shit didn't appeal to me.
they came by a few weeks ago and I was bored and it was $10 so I figured why not check it out and the opening strains of Meanderthal were like the coolest fucking thing ever and on listening to em this is pretty great stuff. really love the s/t and Meanderthal, still need some more time to determine what I think of Restarter.
also got the Floor box cos it was only $26 on Amazon, have enjoyed listening to each disc at random to see their progression. On Dove right now..

Like you, I was late to the party, mostly for the same reasons you mentioned. I've since converted big time and I think the new one is my favorite!

Wise decision to grab that Floor box, great stuff in there.

It took me a while to get into Restarter because I thought it wasn't poppy enough (I usually have the opposite problem) but it's pretty good. It's gonna sound REALLY good if/when the weather gets a lot warmer.

I think if it was poppier, I might not have given it a chance (I didn't like the previous stuff much, but now I'm going back to all of it). "No Servants" is my JAM.

Also, bought the deluxe edition of the vinyl direct from the label just for "Harmonslaught" - man, what a riff!
These guys have a real cool sound. You can definitely see where it might have come from but the mixing of those sounds is really unique. I'd definitely like to see Torche live to see how it goes over.

New album, Admission, out on Friday. First impressions are very good so far. Picking up where Restarter left off.
