deej,

what's the best Do Or Die album?

whats serg's email?

what do you think of shaq's 'strait playin' (prod dj quik)

and what, Saturday, 21 July 2007 17:22 (sixteen years ago) link

my favorite do or die album is the first, but headz or tailz and back to the game ("Diamenz"!) are both pretty great, victory is inconsistent w/ some good moments and one great one ("can u make it hot") and the newer one was trash (save the b-sides collection tho, its called 'get that paper'). I haven't listened to 'pimpin aint dead' more than once but i need to. Belo's solo album has some great shit on it too

deej, Saturday, 21 July 2007 17:28 (sixteen years ago) link

scott - timex soc club

jk i havent heard the others, i don't think.

deej, Saturday, 21 July 2007 17:29 (sixteen years ago) link

to Al, i shd also mention that any do or die song feat. johnny p will probably be classic

Serg's email should be on his site isn't it? he's been using a couple of them, i assume the current one is there.

deej, Saturday, 15 December 2007 09:31 (sixteen years ago) link

deej, when ilx was down a few weeks back (for some gawd awful reason i don't remember) i ended up at the soulstrut forums and you were in some argument over the pretty toney album and said some stuff about Tush (i'm with you on it btw, great song). you mentioned the patrick adams musique album. you're just mentioning that he says 'push push push', right? not that it's the sample source? because i need to know what the fuck they sampled in that song. the one time i met ghostface, i seriously should have asked him that. it's killing me.

jaxon, Saturday, 15 December 2007 18:16 (sixteen years ago) link

hah i figured out the sample source very recently ... i forget how i found out but i do know it! Its from some mid 70s r&b album that is fairly obscure (could have guessed right?) Let me see if i can figure it out again

deej, Saturday, 15 December 2007 18:21 (sixteen years ago) link

BIG HOOS aka the steendriver, Saturday, 15 December 2007 19:56 (sixteen years ago) link

jordan - no idea.

moonship - good q, i'm not quite sure what you mean by 'post dance hipster' but if you mean it like ... the method of exploring music? imaginary revivalist community of internet-linked connoisseurs or something, then nah i would say that message boards and internet nerdery are basically the 5th element of modern rap at this point, nothing pomo about it. ive also compartmentalized my rap listening and my disco listening w/ the sole exception of the dj quik overlap so it doesnt really feel like there is much removal, i'm basically following the same channels i did when i was 16 via napster. any shifts are a function of age.

maybe i dont understand the question

I love naipaul even though he's politically gone to shit I guess, although area of darkness didn't seem like some racist manifesto when I read in college. Guerillas is good if disturbing & the essay about the source incident is good too. I'll take practically anything from a stylist as good as Vidya tho.

NWA vs. Run DMC is crazy -- i think obv NWA had a larger impact, or impact over a larger time (assuming we include solo careers here), but i do think that a lot of the credit given to NWA for breaking street rap the way they did is really more about an abstract hardcore vibe that run dmc had too .... id rather listen to NWA but Run DMC are underrated bcuz their stuff dated more quickly & they didnt have the productive solo careers (jam master jay aside!) that NWA did

my take:

N.W.A. felt more like the straw that broke the camel's back in terms of street talk coming into the mainstream of hip hop, like it made it a phenomenon...but they far from the first...obv, they did it in a more compelling and visceral (and well produced/polished way thanks to dre)...

Run-DMC to me is still THE event of hip hop because yah they did have a street vibe, the way they dressed, the more angry yelling tone, the stripped down beats...everything before them seemed old fashioned after them...

it's almost a beatles/50s rock n' roll thing...like the beatles were more sophisticated musically and probably have more influence on stuff that is happening today...but the 50s rock n' roll guys created the environment that made the beatles even possible....they really changed the world more than the beatles did IMO.

iirc it first came up when i observed a positive consensus towards 'fuck you' by cee lo.

al disagreed & he or someone linked to the singles jukebox as evidence

i said that, like, in my anecdotal experiences, it was kind of universally liked, (more than even say the kanye record is now), implying that this was an ilx / critnerd bubble that suggested the song was getting mixed reviews.

i think this is a solid argument. one of the things that i think about a lot though (cue GZA thread clusterfuck), is how stuff sounds in today's context. You can still drop Eazy E in clubs & people go nuts for it ... his voice really feels relevant today. Other than throwback nights, though, I cant see people dropping too many run dmc songs. it was funnier when i was snapping on whiney for saying diplo knew about baltimore club, but yall still deleted that entire series of posts because hes butthurt

I wasn't butthurt, I was banned during that whole exchange, so i didn't even care

hes had a series of posts (see what i just posted on 'ws 10 for an example) where he was trying to get on me for some bullshit -- it wasnt about 'lol deej said "world of young people"' and never was about that ... it was whiney on some insecure racial b.s. that ive called him on a number of times

Yeah, I remember I said something like that WS, and you defended yourself very quickly and articulately and I basically never came back to it because I think my argument was stupid. So if i haven't said sorry about that officially, then I'm legitimately sorry.

yeh i see how it can be but i wasn't thinking in terms of aesthetics really, like u seemed concerned that ofwgkta was being plucked from obscurity by "the only tastemaker", it's not like they were hood superstars. or that gibbs was being listened to only by p4k readers at the expense of ppl like idk wiz & currensy who were selling out shows or some better example. just a bee in my bonnet i had that doesn't seem to be founded on much.

zvookster, Friday, 17 December 2010 17:43 (thirteen years ago) link

my issues with odd future vs. freddie gibbs are importantly different

i like / have no problem w/ odd future (or lil b) & like some songs by both. they're just not v. close to my particular aesthetic wheelhouse.

i think it totally *makes sense* that pfork cover them & that they be acclaimed. its just not something im personally drawn towards. the only thing i would resist is these artists -- who are, it must be said, marginal, outsider-type performers -- start being treated as if they are central to what rap is about in 2010, or are seen as true 'visionaries' of rap etc. instead of outsiders w/ a weird/unique perspective. over rappers who imo are doing the most interesting/important stylistic work as rappers right now -- husalah jacka gucci currensy whoever else (& fyi wiz is an example of a rapper i like at pretty much just a popist level -- love a few of his songs but i dont think hes nearly on the level of the rappers i mentioned)

roach gigz isnt on the level of those guys either but i feel like hes moving in that direction on his best stuff

freddie gibbs is an entirely difft issue -- he makes wayyy less sense to me as a critical darling. it comes down to crit insecurity about not being down w/ gangster rap x fetishism of skills x the fact that his first record was really well constructed x narratives about major label fuckups

*plop*ism rules (deej), Friday, 17 December 2010 17:48 (thirteen years ago) link

i mean what i liked about the first gibbs album was that it felt like an anonymous major lable gangster record from '99 or something ... but gibbs remains anonymous to me & as a character what is there to say about him?

*plop*ism rules (deej), Friday, 17 December 2010 17:49 (thirteen years ago) link

so it is after all down to aesthetics. the only problem there is that there's no onus on a critic to act as if an artist is marginal and outsider if the artist feels central to him.

zvookster, Friday, 17 December 2010 17:55 (thirteen years ago) link

well idk if there is or not the thread is "ask deej"

zvookster, Friday, 17 December 2010 17:58 (thirteen years ago) link

well i think all critics should also be working as historians to some degree ... like, there are certain kinds of aesthetic progress critics value heavily & some they ignore. do u think the first dude to play drums in a disco style is given the reverence he deserves for so massively shifting musical history?

imo saying lil b is a bigger deal that gucci in terms of his impact on the art form is like saying sun ra is a bigger deal that duke ellington. just being radical doesnt make u inherently more significant (this is the problem w/ the 'progress' narrative in gen)

*plop*ism rules (deej), Friday, 17 December 2010 19:00 (thirteen years ago) link

i was mostly just kidding deej but i do think that analogy sorta underestimates Sun Ra IMO...mostly because i think in the long term lil' b has actually ZERO impact on the art form, and i think sun ra had a real significant impact

overall tho yes ellington was probably more impactful

in my world of Hmong ppl (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Friday, 17 December 2010 19:02 (thirteen years ago) link

i dont think lil b will have zero impact tho i do agree ... but yeah i dont think gucci's importance to rap is as large as duke's to jazz either ... this was more about the artists importance relative to each other than comparing them in terms of their impact on respective art forms

*plop*ism rules (deej), Friday, 17 December 2010 19:07 (thirteen years ago) link

I think arguing about significance is basically bullshit and I think that anyone can make any argument they want and Sun Ra's "contributions to jazz as an art form" (seriously lol at this, hilarious stuff) are probably great enough that I could see someone making a reasonably credible argument on his behalf.

Fig On A Plate Cart (Alex in SF), Friday, 17 December 2010 19:12 (thirteen years ago) link

*plop*ism rules (deej), Friday, 17 December 2010 19:19 (thirteen years ago) link

to zvooster -- i do think i have a pretty strong antipathy to critics trying to think they can tell rap fans what they 'should' be listening to. that following rap is as much about covering the history of music as it is about expressing subjective opinions & that writers have a historical responsibility to 'get it right,' that u cant ignore how the audience for music is interacting w/ it. also, i do like the 2nd half of the krit album a lot. (or any of the traxx that have him in more reflective mode) (country shit is still balls to me tho)

*plop*ism rules (deej), Friday, 17 December 2010 19:25 (thirteen years ago) link

I dunno Ra's influence has filtered down to a lot of unexpected places that Duke has not. Duke is largely forgotten/immaterial to the vast majority of music being made today. Sun Ra, on the other hand, is referenced/cited/serves as inspiration for a pretty broad range of active musicians.

(this is all immaterial of course I just like thinking about Sun Ra)

twat dust and ego overload (Shakey Mo Collier), Friday, 17 December 2010 19:33 (thirteen years ago) link

u cant ignore how the audience for music is interacting w/ it.

twat dust and ego overload (Shakey Mo Collier), Friday, 17 December 2010 19:34 (thirteen years ago) link

sun ra & charles mingus -- the two artists who many rock / non jazz artists seem to cite that im assuming you're referring to -- were both huge ellington disciples

*plop*ism rules (deej), Friday, 17 December 2010 19:35 (thirteen years ago) link

sun ra's early stuff was extremely ellingtonesque. compositionally

*plop*ism rules (deej), Friday, 17 December 2010 19:36 (thirteen years ago) link

of course. everyone in jazz was an Ellington disciple to some degree or another! He was massive, no doubt about it. But he was confined to his genre in a way that Sun Ra was not, and in that sense Sun Ra's impact could be argued to be broader. Because jazz is pretty much dead now, and what is still left of it owes just as much to Ra (if not more) than Ellington, if only by virtue of the fact that no one runs big swing bands anymore - it's all small combos.

im not -- i take issue w critics ignoring huge audiences for rap & writing off large swaths of the music as being generic or rote or boring compared to the fascinating work of odd future & lil b. i dont think gucci fans are 'more legitimate' -- i do think theyre more numerous & that his musical contributions are underheralded

I don't even know how you estimate audience size in this day and age tbh

twat dust and ego overload (Shakey Mo Collier), Friday, 17 December 2010 19:41 (thirteen years ago) link

i dont think that sun ra's impact is 'broader' beyond a niche of artsy folks who enjoy the outsider-ness / weirdness / spectacle of his stuff. of course he was a great artist w/ lots of great songs ... but his impact on the structural nature of the genre is much smaller. what exactly has his influence been? what are ppl taking from him? does it really compare to ellington's 20s-30s innovations in terms of songwriting, textural use of instruments, innovations in voicings & ability to write songs around the instrumentalists themselves rather than generic parts for any performer?

a brief list of artists that take sonic inspiration from/sample/reference/or otherwise are indebted to Sun Ra:

Parliament-Funkadelic
the MC5
Wooden Shjips
MF Doom
Spiritualized
Outkast
a bazillion noiserock acts
Yo La Tengo

and I'm sure this list is much longer, this is just off the top of my head. Ra's influence over the last 30 years of music eclipses Ellington's easily. Now if you want to talk STRICTLY JAZZ, Ellington is the bigger giant no question, if for no other reason that he started working 2 decades earlier than Ra did, and by the time Ra was peaking, the genre was already in a state of diversification and decline.

this argument is besides the point anyway -- lil b hasnt had any impact on music-outside-rap yet & if he does he'll STILL be a marginal rap artist relative to gucci. similarly duke ellington is more important to jazz. i dont really care how many indie artists (p-funk is basically the only group u listed to even be popular in any conceivable way, and it basically comes down to what ... all the space-themed shit? couldnt that as easily have been influenced by star trek? i dont hear the musical influence at all) are influenced by sun ra. this is an attempt to turn jazz into music that exists only to benefit the narrative telling me that the MC5 are more important than any of the countless artists influenced by ellington in the last 30 years then fuck that

ok well if you mean 'andre from outkast dresses up funny & sun ra did too' then im gonna argue that this is a correlation =/= causation issue

once again tho your entire argument is a red herring -- unless you think indie's narrative is more important than jazz's, theres no reason that sun ra being more popular w/ the MC5 & noize bands = hes had a larger impact on music at large. this is basically white privilege shifted to music (w/ token black artists who used space- & comic book themes shoehorned in to suggest otherwise) -- 'jazz' is a genre in a shoebox, while 'everything else' is a narrow band of marginal rock artists & andre 3000 wearing fuzzy boots

similarly, lil b is 'important' to ppl outside of rap ergo he's given a more privileged spot in mainsstream crit canons -- rap is treated as a single stream, so being a weird outsider who isnt working w/in rap's framework makes you that much more valuable to mainstream critics who dont care how rap's own narratives develop. then a narrow strain of pfork readers & ilx posters & bloggers can pretend lil b is a big deal, which makes him so. gucci is more important to the development of rap, but lil b is a weirdo!! next thing you know, 100 years from now shakey mo jr. the III is arguing that lil b is a more important artist than gucci was, bcause rap is dead now but the long-running narrative of white ppl biting black forms is still going

i think sun ra has had an influence! but it seems self-evident to me that ellington's towers over it in terms of 20th century music in the long view. this was why i made the comparison -- if id realized ppl here honestly believe sun ra is a bigger deal, i wouldnt have made the comparison for gucci vs. lil b!

i think 'marginal' outsider artists are important, have their place, should be celebrated. but they often are used, imo, to denigrate the importance of art forms like jazz or hip hop that have their own narratives & values that dont fit into the same ones that allowed, for example, my dad to think pfunk were cool but disco was trash, or that made sun ra a countercultural hero but sees duke as some old jazz guy. it doesnt acknowledge what these artists do that is so different because it doesnt recognize the values that jazz & hip hop frameworks are based around

Fig On A Plate Cart (Alex in SF), Friday, 17 December 2010 21:40 (thirteen years ago) link

yeah but imo critics already privilege shakey's definition of influence over mine;

it's not an either/or thing, the kinds of influences are just DIFFERENT. Ellington's influence was primarily formative and musical. He changed the way music was made, the way it was arranged, the way it was structured. But his influence is limited largely to his own genre: jazz. Sun Ra's musical influence is harder to parse because he was so diffuse and difficult to imitate. But where his influence is much wider is at the conceptual level - and this was kind of the whole point of his career. He was deeply invested in his personal mythology/philosophy and in so doing he created a narrative vehicle that has proven to be an exceptionally rich vein of material for other people to mine, primarily outside of his chosen genre of jazz. That being the case, his concepts have spread much farther afield than Ellington's, which are now kind of set in stone and relegated to a specific era. This is not to say that he is somehow a bigger figure in jazz than Ellington (he isn't). But insofar as what he did is still impacting a wide range of musicians working today (while Ellington is not) and will probably continue to do so in the future, I am arguing that in that sense Sun Ra's influence is more pervasive and, perhaps, even longer lasting. This is because I think the afro-futurist concept that Sun Ra invented is some incredibly deep, broadly appealing material that will continue to transcend genre boundaries in a way that Ellington does not.

that's about as clear as I can be.

I'm about 99% sure that this post has been entirely pointless and that deej will misrepresent it/misunderstand it entirely

^^^the problem i have here, shakey, is that you're relegating jazz to a supporting player in music history, instead of one of the 20th century's most significant (if not its most significant) movements in music. saying sun ra's influence was more 'diffuse' -- crossing more social boundaries -- is possibly correct, but that doesnt mean hes actually more significant, because those artists might have crossed boundaries but im not sure that they covered the breadth of music culture the way ellington & jazz did

like, bebop wouldn't have happened without it, the emergence of rock and roll would have been very different and the entire doo-wop genre may not have existed, which would have had implications on a lot of the British Invasion bands, and so on and so on

Basically, without Duke Ellington the modern musical scene would not exist; something different would be in its place.

lay it down, the el debarge/faith evans, the miguel despite jcole, window seat ... i feel like im missing some obvious ones, ill have to check my list when i get home from work

actually since PF didn't post ballots maybe deej should just post his EOY lists here?

im gonna post them on my blargs, trying to downplay the connection between my boarding here & my irl life for maybe obvious reasons

*plop*ism rules (deej), Friday, 17 December 2010 21:49 (thirteen years ago) link

but im not sure that they covered the breadth of music culture the way ellington & jazz did

they span one of the hugest and most influential r&b acts of all time (P-funk) to British drone rock to chart-topping hip hop to underground noise acts. I dunno dude that's a pretty broad swath of the culture. Afrofuturism is ALL over the place.

"my complaint would be that, just like w/ rap now, mainstream jazz crit is relegated to a feeder-genre for the central narrative around certain kinds of art rock & etc. that critics obsess over"

But those music critics are contemporary art-rock critics?!?! I mean quite obviously they are going to be more interested in artists/sounds that are more directly influential on the stuff they are currently interested in, right?

Fig On A Plate Cart (Alex in SF), Friday, 17 December 2010 21:50 (thirteen years ago) link

like, why is ellington's influence on jazz "just" influencing jazz less of a big deal than ra influencing a handful of artists that happen to be from a diverse range of genres, but on a much much smaller scale?

because jazz is dead. altho Dan has a fair point that there's kind of a domino effect into how jazz's developments rolled over across other genres (which raises the question of where do you draw the line cuz if you keep going all the way to British invasion bands... I can't really think of one that bears any sonic resemblance to Duke Ellington)

I would be more interested in knowing deej's indie rock singles of the year.

not sure about singles but i really liked the ariel pink (aside from the two out-&-out punk-ish songs 2/3rds through) because it sounds like steely dan imo, also dig girls compositions altho im not as into dude's singing voice i can put up with it alright cuz the songs are good. as usual though i havent heard a lot of indie though. oh and there are some jams on the LCD album esp "home."

i like some DFA stuff too if that counts -- "since we last met" "static on the wire" black van

*plop*ism rules (deej), Friday, 17 December 2010 21:52 (thirteen years ago) link

jazz is pretty dead but i still feel like it has a history that im invested in & that the entire story of jazz, rise & fall, is still relevant to us today i guess.

*plop*ism rules (deej), Friday, 17 December 2010 21:54 (thirteen years ago) link

i always resent when ppl say jazz is dead...it's not dead, it's music that's so of the moment to me, esp more free/improv stuff, it's always alive when you are seeing a great jazz group playing, it's never the same

in my world of Hmong ppl (upper mississippi sh@kedown), Friday, 17 December 2010 21:56 (thirteen years ago) link

from a narrative perspective its pretty dead

i do agree that its innovations in that regard are as alive as ever, though @ m@tt

altho Dan has a fair point that there's kind of a domino effect into how jazz's developments rolled over across other genres (which raises the question of where do you draw the line cuz if you keep going all the way to British invasion bands... I can't really think of one that bears any sonic resemblance to Duke Ellington)

Well, "British Invasion" is misleading there; I'm really thinking of the reintroduction of more complicated doo-wop-esque harmony back into rock music, which was really more of an American thing with The Beach Boys and The Byrds but happened at about the same time as the British Invasion and was processed by a lot of the bands that came after them.

The basic point is that Ellington introduced a harmonic language that was embraced, transformative, and is still in use across multiple genres including pop, classical, R&B, hip-hop, etc. None of what we listen to today would exist without what he did; this is why he is a larger, more important influence than Sun Ra (who is a pretty big influence! We may be saying similar things about him in 30 years but I don't know that he's baked deeply enough into the musical infrastructure to reach the same level of stature).

Also really the only reason jazz is dead is because people keep saying it is.

Tina Tina Cheneuse (DJP), Friday, 17 December 2010 22:01 (thirteen years ago) link

suxx that james moody died this year -- saw him play back in like 2000!!

*plop*ism rules (deej), Friday, 17 December 2010 22:01 (thirteen years ago) link

the other thing ellington did that was incredible was how he found this apex of the point where individuality meets group dynamic during jazz's most popular era ... that he would compose pieces specifically for individual artists in his band, taylored for their respective styles, it captures the central tension of jazz's relationship w the music it was rebelling against

*plop*ism rules (deej), Friday, 17 December 2010 22:04 (thirteen years ago) link

i mean you could say kind of blue reached a similar apex but jazz as a populist movement was already on the wane at that pt

*plop*ism rules (deej), Friday, 17 December 2010 22:04 (thirteen years ago) link

well fwiw, in strict musical terms yeah Ra's influence will never approach the scope of Ellington - his shit is just too weird, too dissonant, too idiosyncratic.

funnily enough while I am sure Dan is correct about the formal impact of Ellington's innovations still being felt in contemporary music, I bet the percentage of currently performing artists who are actually familiar with Duke's music is probably roughly analogous to the number who are actually familiar with Ra's lol

basically that site is a full-on stats boner

xp: yeah Louis; possibly Scott Joplin if you are looking at ragtime? Also I tend to think of Dizzy in the same breath as Miles and Charlie; maybe Dave Brubeck as an outlier

Tina Tina Cheneuse (DJP), Friday, 17 December 2010 22:26 (thirteen years ago) link

i remember a fascinating piece in one of the jazz mags talking about how there were no white jazz artists who really created a sea change as far as style, could be considered up w/ the greats in terms of being sea change-type performers, with the possible exception of bix biederbecke. it was an interesting piece

*plop*ism rules (deej), Friday, 17 December 2010 22:27 (thirteen years ago) link

eh I think that is a standard critical position. the guy who taught my history of jazz class in college said the same about Bix. he def. has his adherents.

joplin registers way at the bottom

i think brubeck is probably a bit overrated, biederbeck a bit underrated

wasnt brubeck one of the first jazz dudes to like tour colleges & shit ... i mean he even had a 'live at oberlin' album

yeah, his Wooster performance is basically the reason why my dad likes jazz today

Tina Tina Cheneuse (DJP), Friday, 17 December 2010 22:32 (thirteen years ago) link

fats navarro & tadd dameron cd i have is one of my favorites ever. highly recommended

*plop*ism rules (deej), Friday, 17 December 2010 22:32 (thirteen years ago) link

this actually brings up something interesting about 'influence' arguments ... how some artists are influential by dint of popularity vs. others who are influential by doing something so structurally significant to the art form ... that sort of stuff is fascinating to me. its like 'deep' influence vs. 'wide' influence or something

*plop*ism rules (deej), Friday, 17 December 2010 22:33 (thirteen years ago) link

well it's only gonna be structurally significant if other artists pick up on it and run with it

twat dust and ego overload (Shakey Mo Collier), Friday, 17 December 2010 22:36 (thirteen years ago) link

trying to think of artists who are popular among musicians but were never popular commercially (probably applies to a TON of rap dudes. also to Sun Ra lol)

Fig On A Plate Cart (Alex in SF), Friday, 17 December 2010 22:38 (thirteen years ago) link

wasn't brubeck kinda influential in that whole button-down "third stream music" thing that supposedly was taking classical type hongro compositional shit and marrying it to jazz?

(tho ellington already did that i guess)

ellington depends on what era u are looking for ... his most influential / significant stuff was cotton club era -- where they started calling his style 'jungle music' -- 1927-1932. i think ppl consider his most influential stuff to go into the early 40s

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=80cTeLCcHOo

bubber miley on tpt!!

a lot of folks will rep for his 'comeback' live cd at newport, which is cool, or 'far east suite' which is awesome. 70th birthday party cd has some insane stuff. money jungle trio records w/ mingus & roach are incomparable esp 'fleurette africain' which is probably the most beautiful song ever made. my mindgarden fav is 'side by side' w/ johnny hodges, partic. 'stompy jones' which has an incredible solo from sweets edison

but his real impact was in the late 20s / thru the 30s. this is probably a great comp, i just have a bunch of cds the un-comprehensively cover this era: http://www.allmusic.com/album/creole-rhapsody-duke-ellington-in-the-thirties-r942498
