Let me get this straight: nu-ILX coders have actually created invite-only secret boards for select people?! Sound incredibly divisive and elitist. If this is true, I'm sorta disappointed. Seems like the last step to the balkanization of ILX, except that unlike with regional threads it is totally intentional to create such divisions, and people aren't even free to join them if they wish.

I kinda hope this is a joke or something and not really true.

I think Stan has a very good point: people actually donated money for the ILX server because they felt ILX as a community was worth preserving. I assume many of them would feel that this was not their idea of a new ILX community.

as a site mod I would like to just go ahead and throw the idea out there that the ILX community has not suffered in the least from the addition of a very small number of boards that aren't open to the general public. While resentment from some at-large users who have yet to be invited to any of the "secret" (lol good job folks) boards is completely understandable, I think the result in the long run is going to be an improvement. Certainly it allows for the accomodation of many longtime users who've recently found the public boards less enjoyable than in the past.

I have nothing against private conversations, but having private boards under the supposedly "open" ILX site feels like against the whole idea of this message board. Whatever sense of community there is to this place would be eroded by such boards, in my opinion. The worst case scenario is that every ILX regional and other click will have their own private board, and only folks like me who don't happen to belong to these special clicks will be left on the main board. I thought the regional threads were a good enough way for people from the same area to have some local chatter, I don't see much trolling on them.

If people want to have private conversations, there are other places to do that, I don't see why it needs to be on "special" ILX boards. And like I said, folks actually donated a lot of cash to build up this site. I wonder if so many contributions would have been made if someone had said, "Oh, by the way, the new site will have invisible boards only select few can join."

Really, I don't see any way this will improve ILX in the general. Maybe a few people will be happier, but they could just as easily have their private conversations somewhere else.

Nothing at all, it's just that they cease to become 'private conversations' when there's just enough reveal to make people feel either excluded or vulnerable, which seems to be the intention behind the revelation.

I wonder why - irony being a pathetic excuse - there is a trend for this particular cohort to express itself like frat boys who haven't quite given up the latency phase, so much do they revel in the 'butthurtedness' of others.

Dude, the sub-boards have never really affected the number of threads on ILE, the regional threads might as well be secret boards for all the interest they hold for most non-regional people. I find it somewhere between funny and sad that the private board thing has happened but I don't see what the problem is with it. You donated towards keeping a website running, not to demand that x number of people talk publically on it at all times. Chill. This is a tiny little storm in a novelty teacup.

Why not make these boards open then? Yeah, no doubt the secret boards don't affect the main board that much (at this point), but it's the basic idea of secret elitist boards that I'm against. There's been a lot of talk of the balkanization of ILE throughout the years, it's weird that whoever came up with this idea wouldn't see that it could have an negative effect on the whatever sense of community there is to ILX.

People keep bleating about elitist, and maybe I'm misunderstanding the timeline here, but I thought these boards were being tried out for people who wanted to avoid the hurly burly of being zinged in public and just wanted to carry on their tea party in peace and quiet. You can't enforce community, if people wanna secede they're gonna do it one way or another. This seems like a relatively harmless way of that happening.
