C or D: Emitt Rhodes?

I've been listening to his first album for the past few days. Should I get his second? Is it as good as this one? I'm tempted to say Dud just because I want to play devils advocate, because I don't find very much strkingly original in his music. But it's very well done, the production is smart, he's got a nice voice, and the songs are pretty goddamn catchy. So it's not a dud, then, so it's gotta be classic.

But.. how about other stuff? I'm not a very big Merry Go Round fan, and like I said, I haven't heard the second album.

wierd..i just picked up his second album (mirror) the other day used on vinyl...it's pretty cool...his rockers are pretty hokey and don't rock, but all the depressing pretty songs are great...very mccartney solo type vibe on the one i've got...it's pretty good i think.

M@tt He1geson (Matt Helgeson), Tuesday, 31 January 2006 00:16 (eighteen years ago) link

I've been aboard for years and prefer "Mirror" over the first. If you can find it, I say buy it.

kwhitehead (stephen schmidt), Tuesday, 31 January 2006 01:16 (eighteen years ago) link

Total classic. I like the "The American Dream" best which has "Mother Earth" and "Mary will you take my hand?" which are two of my favorite songs by him. He gets knocked for sounding like McCartney. It's an obvious comparison and not so far off the mark but I'll take his stuff over Wings any day of the weak.

Does anyone know what ever happened to him? I think he's still alive and after a 4th album whose name escapes he pretty much disappeared from music. And considering he was a teenager when he started that must've put him in his early 20's at that point.

Jacobo Rock (jacobo rock), Tuesday, 31 January 2006 01:45 (eighteen years ago) link

I got Listen Listen, a Merry Go Round compilation, recently, and I really like it. His first album is good. I mean the self-titled one. I think it's his first.

youn, Tuesday, 31 January 2006 01:54 (eighteen years ago) link

I love love LOVE his debut (and Merry Go Round is great, too) -- I'm less hot on the followups. I read a feature in Big Takeover (yeah, sorry) sometime back on him -- I gather he's battled depression for several years to the detriment of his career.

Naive Teen Idol (Naive Teen Idol), Tuesday, 31 January 2006 03:09 (eighteen years ago) link

Classic all the way although the quality of the records did fall away as time went on, the s/t record is the best and Mirror/Farewell To Paradise less so. He had signed a deal where he had to deliver 2 records a year I think but because he was recording everything himself this was physically and mentally impossible which eventually led to him stopping releasing records and having some sort of a breakdown I think. Couldn't take the pressure that was put on him. Since then he has produced other people and continued to write songs and there have been on off rumours for a long time that he was going to release a record but due to bad luck or whatever it never makes it out. I read a

I have heard that Rhino Handmade or Hip-o-Select are working on a box of all his stuff which I'm looking forward to.

Finally, just found this interview from 1997 which might be of interest

Wow, a box would be great. As for how he'd be today, all I know is that the one song from 1980 on the Listen, Listen comp has the worst treacly sax imaginable...

i once had a long confused (maybe drunken) conversation with a friend where I said "this guy sounds more like mccartney than mccartney!" and my friend said "you think he sounds like mccartney? i don't hear that at all!" and we went back and forth for a long time. but it turned out i had been saying emmitt miller, the old minstrel "lovesick blues" guy and had completely confused my friend. true story!

I'd wondered for eons why this guy disappeared after 1973, and just read that his ABC contract demanded 6 albums over the span of 3 years and he couldn't keep up. They sued him and he started working behind the scenes instead. Imagine chasing a guy this talented away from a recording career because he worked slowly. jfc!

True but then I wonder why he didn't reduce his workload by just getting Leland Sklar and Waddy Wachtel and whoever to play on his records instead of trying to do everything himself - he'd even taken up the saxophone on his final (70s) album!

Sonny Shamrock (Tom D.), Sunday, 19 July 2020 23:42 (three years ago) link

He was really into doing stuff by himself. I actually was just looking at my vinyl Farewell To Paradise (his last album for ABC/Dunhill), and his liner notes are very defensive about controlling all aspects of his music as an artist.

"...And the Gods Socially Distanced" (C. Grisso/McCain), Sunday, 19 July 2020 23:54 (three years ago) link

I've always been amazed he never found work as a professional songwriter, but I guess he was a little too early for that to be a viable career path.

"...And the Gods Socially Distanced" (C. Grisso/McCain), Sunday, 19 July 2020 23:56 (three years ago) link

Farewell To Paradise liner notes (for context, I believe he already been sued by ABC/Dunhill for breach of contract before recording the album)

If gold is valuable because it is scarce, then sincerity must even be more valuable because there is so precious little of it. I'm seldom attracted to liner notes. I've only taken the time to read just a few...those I have, in so many words, praised whomever for his or her musical genius. I find it difficult to do the same.

If I possess a talent, it surely must be patience. Someone said something about the world stepping aside when a man knew what he wanted. I've known for some time and the world hasn't yet made it any easier for me. Those things I cherish most I worked long and paid dearly for. I am a recording artist not just a songwriter or musician. I have taken total responsibility of my art. Avoiding the temptation of using others to conceal my weaknesses. My works are sincere and entirety my own.

A few of the singles off the last album, none of which I have listened to yet, are credited to Emitt Rhodes, Richard Thompson and The Bangles. Not 100% sure what this means.

Left Eye Frizzell (James Redd and the Blecchs), Monday, 20 July 2020 04:45 (three years ago) link

Seems to mean backing vox by Vicki and Debbi Peterson and electric guitar by Richard Thompson. Pretty nice.

Left Eye Frizzell (James Redd and the Blecchs), Monday, 20 July 2020 04:52 (three years ago) link

They're stray singles from a project just prior to that last album, with Thompson & The Bangles featured guests.

The doc is kind of depressing and Emitt was depressed and yet the older Emitt doesn’t seem like a betrayal of the younger one, rather a natural extension thereof and there is something eminently lovable about his withdrawn yet warm presence, if I may allow myself to go there.

Naive Teen Idol, Tuesday, 21 July 2020 03:59 (three years ago) link

I think I expected that documentary to be more depressing than it was. Rhodes is a depressive but not smotheringly so. And hey, he did do an album, even if it’s hard for me to reconcile the “To Make You Feel My Love”-esque vibe of that material with anything he did earlier in his career.

Truth be told I don’t usually go for the one man band thing, for one thing in the case of Macca I’d prefer if he had somebody named Ringo or Jim on drums, and I resisted it in Emitt’s case quite a bit, but if that’s the way he wanted to go than I’ll have to take it, ultimately sounds pretty good. Splits the difference between Elliott Smith and Prince in their one man band incarnations.

The three Bangles/Richard Thompson recordings were an offshoot of the recording sessions shown in the doc which, as C. Grisso/McCain pointed out, were pulled because of litigation. Rainbow Ends was actually recorded a few years later, this time in Emitt's home studio but with outside musicians coming in.

The one-two closing punch on the Collected Contiguous Works of titular album closer "Farewell to Paradise" and the non-LP "Tame the Lion" is really strong. Vic Damone version of "Farewell to Paradise" is not bad either. And, sorry if I'm late to the party, but slowly starting to think his lyrics are pretty strong, sometimes seemingly formulaic at first blush, but open closer examination often a cut above.

Also, that makes sense re. Rainbow’s End being recorded later – the doc was 2010-11 and the record wasn’t released until 2016 or so. Seems fitting that he got fucked by the industry right to the end.

Re. his lyrics, I agree – one of my favorite tunes of his has always been “Live Til You Die,” but it was only this week that I really listened to the lyrics, poss. with an eye toward his innate unhappiness. In retrospect they feel a bit like him shouting into the abyss:

I have to say the things I feel, oh
I have to feel the things I say
You must live till you die, you must fight to survive
You must live till you die, you must feel to be alive
You must live till you die
See the sun rising in the east, welcome warm days
Feel my heart flying every time we're alone, babe
Everything around me has been changing so
I can't let go, oh no, no
You must live till you die, you must fight to survive
You must live till you die, you must feel to be alive
You must live till you die
Feel the earth trembling, have you heard distant thunder?
Everything's moving what's this feeling I'm under
Everything around me has been changing so
I can't let go, oh no, no
You must live till you die, you must fight to survive
You must live till you die, you must feel to be alive
You must live till you die, you must live till you die
I have to spin the spinning wheel, I have to kneel that way
I have to say the things I feel, I have to feel the things I say
You must live till you die, you must fight to survive
You must live till you die, you must feel to be alive
You must live till you die

I suspect, based on his fearful and pretty nasty homophobic comments in this and one other interview I’ve read online, comments uttered without any sort of “one of the boys” jokiness, that Rhodes went through or witnessed some physical abuse that fucked him up. Or possibly he was repressed? Who knows? And this is on top of all the record contract grief. He just reads like a heavily battle-scarred person. Sad.

i don't know emitt's life or what he went through.

i know there are many, many kinds of trauma and abuse - physical, sexual, emotional - and they are all damaging. i know that trauma and abuse is far more common, particularly in cishet-identifying men, than is readily acknowledged. i know there is a lot about rhodes' life that i have seen, uh, very commonly in, particularly, amabs who have gone through trauma and abuse, who are socialized to handle trauma and abuse in a certain way, for whom trauma and abuse are _normalized_.

i know that trauma and abuse is not a matter of "victims" and "abusers" but is a cycle, a pattern of behavior, that is instilled. i am not surprised to learn of the things that emitt rhodes has to say about gay people. whatever he went through, whatever brought him to that point, i think he is responsible for what he has said and done, and i do not think anything he may or may not have done exculpates him.

i very much enjoy much of emitt rhodes' music. i am saddened, but not surprised, to learn how difficult his life wound up being, how much hurt and pain he went through, and i am glad that he is not suffering anymore.

Time Will Show Leo Weiser (James Redd and the Blecchs), Sunday, 26 July 2020 17:24 (three years ago) link

On a lighter note, that interview also has this great exchange:

Kim: Your label mate, at the time, over at A&M was Phil Ochs, who was going kind of psychedelic…

Emitt: Nobody liked Phil Ochs. Did you like Phil Ochs?

Edwin: I loved his music.

Kim: I heard he was a horrible human being, by all accounts, but I still liked his records.

Emitt: You mean you liked him??
(The waiter walked up at this point to ask if we needed anything and Emitt addressed him.)

Emitt: Ever heard of Phil Ochs?
Waiter: Uhhh…

Emitt: How old are you?
Waiter: I’m nineteen.

Emitt: No, you’ve never heard of Phil Ochs. Forget it.
(The waiter left and we continued this thread)

Naive Teen Idol, Sunday, 26 July 2020 17:42 (three years ago) link

Kim: But you’d go back in time and kill Hitler?

Emitt: (chortling) Oh, I’d kill Hitler, no prob! I’d kill Saddam Hussein. Show him to me, I’ll go for him. (drives his butter knife against table repeatedly)

Kim: Put the knife down.

Relatedly, there was this in that interview:

Edwin: What other instruments do you play besides guitar, piano, bass and drums?

Emitt: Nothing. Is there anything?? For me it’s one-four-five. It’s Pythagorean Theorum. For me it’s mathematics. I love Pythagoras. Everybody else in rock and roll loves Pythagoras, too, even if they don’t know it. I’m just telling you that Pythagoras was a wonderful guy. He lived a long time ago, nobody knows him and nobody cares. He gave us do re mi fa sol la ti do. Without him… somebody else would have had to do it. I love math. I love science. I love that stuff.

Edwin: Yeah, math and music are pretty much synonymous.

Emitt: It’s Pythagoras. You split the string in half and you get an octave. You split it into thirds and you get a third.

That interview with Scram magazine is pretty horrific. The whole sexual abuse story he tells, the bit about the guy who was abused getting arrested outside the club where they had played as teenagers with a bomb or explosives, wtf? Also, though they've censored the names of the people involved it's fairly easy to find out who they are - and the guy he accuses of the abuse is still alive.

Sonny Shamrock (Tom D.), Monday, 27 July 2020 18:28 (three years ago) link

I saw that. He was named after Gary Cooper!

Time Will Show Leo Weiser (James Redd and the Blecchs), Monday, 27 July 2020 18:29 (three years ago) link

The interview is from 2016, so nothing seems to have happened about these accusations. Not that Emitt Rhodes in 2016 is any kind of reliable witness on anything. judging by that interview.

Sonny Shamrock (Tom D.), Monday, 27 July 2020 18:30 (three years ago) link

i started reading a lot about the palace guard, orange-empire records, and the hullabaloo to find out more about the scene that was going on. it's particularly disturbing how much the contemporary promotion hypes the fact that it's a place for the TEENS, where the KIDS can finally come hang out after hours and see their favorite pop groups.

Seems like with the political references being made that Scram interview was from the mid-2000s, possibly around the time the Rev-Ola Merry-Go-Round comp came out.

"...And the Gods Socially Distanced" (C. Grisso/McCain), Monday, 27 July 2020 19:23 (three years ago) link

these two quotes appear right next to each other in kate sullivan's 2001 oral history of KROQ:

GARY BOOKASTA (founder, KROQ AM and FM): We wanted to call it "KROK," but it was already taken. It was [DJ] Humble Harve's idea to use the Q. He ended up killing his wife, but Phil Spector and I went to bat for him in court. He only got two years [for manslaughter].

SHADOE STEVENS (DJ, 1973-74, 1976-79): KROQ was the inspiration of Gary Bookasta. Gary was a con man. He had an almost mystical ability to make people believe in him. He pulled together 13 partners, who built this radio station in Burbank. It took off like a rocket.

budo jeru, Monday, 27 July 2020 19:26 (three years ago) link

Self-XP I see on the Scram site that the interview was put online in early '16, but issue of the mag it appeared in was published in 2003.

A lot of these things were an open secret – Bob Markley and the West Coast Pop Art Experimental Band, Kim Fowley and the Runaways. I keep hoping Ugly Things will do an exposé on sexual abuse in 60s garage rock circles. It’s def. a part of the history.

Back in the day, Fowley came over to hang out in Glasgow for some reason and had all these indie rock scenesters from the Pastels and Teenage Fanclub running about after him like he was some fucking genius - while he was trying to touch up all their girlfriends. He played some shit gig with Norman Blake on guitar and somebody from the BMX Bandits on bass or whatever and I remember someone saying after it, "Do you want to hang out with Kim?" and I was like, "I'm not going anywhere near that talentless cunt".

That almost sounds like it inspired the That Thing You Do! scene where the band is doing this revue-style tour of county fairs and one of them falls in love with the just-about-past-her-prime Dusty Springfield/Jackie DeShannon-esque singer.

I think every music scene ever has had creepy, manipulative older guys who hang around it - Markley and Fowley are textbook examples.

To some extent, sure. But I suspect there was something about that scene’s outsider aesthetic in the midst of the sexual revolution that those kinds of characters were really able to take advantage of.

Naive Teen Idol, Monday, 27 July 2020 23:05 (three years ago) link

not only were there aspects of that scene that might have encouraged the presence of predatory behavior, it's precisely that, for fowley, being a sexual deviant / creep who bragged about hanging around high schools trying to pick up underage girls, that was all self-consciously part of his image / "appeal"

cf. the fugs' "dirty old man"

I read the 2012 LA Beat interview (2 Parts, BTW). It's a bit different than the Scram one, way more deep-dive discussion about musical theory and science. Extra-Value stuff on the background of and what went wrong with the Bangles/Thompson singles, plus complaints about how poorly mastered he felt the Hip-O Select comp was.

Re. his lyrics, I agree – one of my favorite tunes of his has always been “Live Til You Die,” but it was only this week that I really listened to the lyrics, poss. with an eye toward his innate unhappiness. In retrospect they feel a bit like him shouting into the abyss:

Wish NTI would come back and type in the lyrics to "Ever Find Yourself Running," which are hitting me right now.

Time Will Show Leo Weiser (James Redd and the Blecchs), Thursday, 30 July 2020 19:29 (three years ago) link

It's not typing! Google is my co-pilot:

Ever find yourself running, running, running away
Ever find yourself hiding from the things that you feel
Ever hear yourself crying, crying, crying to someone
Won't you look down from Heaven, won't you prove you are real?
Ever lose yourself searching, searching, searching in darkness
With your questions unanswered, never knowing the truth
Ever feel yourself dying, dying, dying a slow death
Heavy laden with burdens that are stealing your youth
Ever find yourself running, running, running away
Ever find yourself hiding from the things that you feel
Ever find yourself running?

And I would agree ... one of the things I love about his lyrics is that they convey really heavy emotions and thoughts with an economy of vocabulary. So when you come across a couplet like "Heavy laden with burdens that are stealing your youth" you almost catch yourself to make sure you heard it right.

Naive Teen Idol, Thursday, 30 July 2020 21:30 (three years ago) link

Time Will Show Leo Weiser (James Redd and the Blecchs), Sunday, 2 August 2020 02:18 (three years ago) link

I’ll def. give it another chance – I hadn’t realized this but the supporting cast alone is insane (Hoffs, most of Jellyfish, Aimee Mann – according to a review I saw).

Isn’t It So finally clicked with me a week or so ago – the version I have on the Listen, Listen comp (recorded in 1980) has some questionable sax but a great chorus, and kind of suggests an alternate career as an MOR hitmaker. But the version on Rainbow Ends is nice as well, the strings give it a sadder, more elegiac feel.

Tim, Friday, 7 August 2020 17:53 (three years ago) link

Thanks. Saw that a couple of, um, songs, from that session made it onto Songs, maybe they were even re-recorded, didn't know about bonus track reissues in the interim.

Time Will Show Leo Weiser (James Redd and the Blecchs), Friday, 7 August 2020 17:56 (three years ago) link

So do you guys know where that house is on the self-titled cover?

Time Will Show Leo Weiser (James Redd and the Blecchs), Saturday, 8 August 2020 13:16 (three years ago) link

Also, um, one of Emitt's ex-wives seems to be a member of the Fan Forum.

Definitely her.

that's interesting and also weird. will she tell her story ? will the fans be kind to her ?

the woman who took the photograph on the jackie deshannon album cover was married to composer teiji ito, maya deren's widower, and was the administrator of the deren estate until her death in 1999:

No to the first question. To the second question, they mostly turn a blind eye if they are aware of it at all. Although one person posted this on a thread she started:

So as this posthumous boom of interest is winding down for me, not much more info is emerging, mostly some intriguing photos from a friend Emitt had given them to, who is turning them over one by one like playing cards. Well, there was that one Xmas card from Emitt, his wife and first son posted by a guy who played with Billy Joel in the early ( Attila?) days. There is still the ever-present curious cat part of me that wants to hear the gory details of all of his family troubles but highly doubt these will come to light. Do feel after extensive (re)listening that despite the way his career played out his musical legacy is strong, that he was much more than just a stuntman, a footnote, a might-have-been, currently residing in the where-is-he-now file.

Isinglass Ponys (James Redd and the Blecchs), Sunday, 16 August 2020 08:09 (three years ago) link

There’s always a temptation to want to know more with these guys – to learn where and why things went off the rails and how it all maybe kind of could’ve ended differently. But I almost always find that when I do learn more—say, reading the Gene Clark, Dennis Wilson and Billy MacKenzie biographies—while I’m glad I dug deeper I’m invariably kind of bummed out and feel like I need to take a shower. Mental illness sucks that way.

I feel comfortable concluding that learning more about Emitt would almost certainly end the same way.

There are a few nice pictures that keep emerging from various shoeboxes in the other place, including one of Emitt with what seems to be Jack Nitzsche along with this guy, https://hitsdailydouble.com/news&id=288534&title+Harvey-Bruce-RIP, the man who signed Emitt and introduced him to Keith Olsen.

Isinglass Ponys (James Redd and the Blecchs), Tuesday, 25 August 2020 18:27 (three years ago) link

Nitzsche earlier arranged and/or produced one of the Palace Guard singles, which iirc he was dismissive of in the big interview/discography overview he did in the late '70s in BOMP!.

Tribute was kind of touching if a little thrown together. In other news, pictures are showing up of Emitt's induction into the Hawthorne Hall of Fame, courtesy of his ex-wife and others. Most interesting is a picture of Emitt and his fiancée at a restaurant she liked- at LAX!

that was presumably the proud bird, which is actually next door to lax, with a view. a strange little la landmark.

Some people keep referring to the earlier version of "Isn't It So" as one of three songs, but I think they are confusing this with the three songs with Richard Thompson and the Peterson sisters.

New cover of "Promises I Made" by Black Keys guy mentioned here.

Feels a little too slow to me upon first listen, but the story is nice.

“And of course the Emitt Rhodes song at the end [Promises I’ve Made]. I think that was the first song I recorded, and it was on the day that Emitt died. That was what set the fire for everything because I liked this new recording set-up and how it turned out, so I just kept going”.
