n/a - don't look at it as 'stoner metal,' because that will lead you down a path of lots of crappy music. Just buy two or three Electric Wizard albums and be done with it. THOSE records ALL fucking SLAY

Maybe I just don't like stoner rock.

Also, does it seem like this is everywhere all the sudden, or am I just sinking deeper into stoner culture? I've heard several different people talking about it, plus its appearing on BROKEN FLOWERS OST (oh no!)

Yeah, a bunch of stoner and doom bands. The phenom that the practice and style has been everywhere all of a sudden has been everywhere all of a sudden for a few years, minimum.

The version on Broken Flowers OST is between four and five minutes long, so I assume it's an edit.

Fact of the matter is, it's not particularly great. Its mythology exceeds its listenability. The story of "Jerusalem" and "Dopesmoker" is much better in the telling than in the listening and that will always be a substantial part of its appeal. The genre's "Tales of the Topographic Ocean," maybe. Hampton-Grease Band's "Music to Eat?" In any case, if you have the patience to pick and choose in stoner and doom records, there are quite a few that are preferable to anything Sleep's catalog.

In the sense of insurmountable-object, maybe. But TFTO has the advantage of actually being good.

NO WAY.

For my money, though, I still say Electric Wizard.

i always enjoyed listening to it. I have no problem with the length. I'm kinda lazy, so I'm not big on getting up anyway. i was never fanatical enough to buy the later dopesmoker version though. i never cared for the first sleep album. that one bored me, not as good as st. vitus, etc. but, yeah, jerusalem is funny and cool and it is nice and heavy. great riffs. what's not to like? the latest high on fire, i think, is the best thing the dude has ever done. i didn't really like either of the other high on fire albums i had. just sold the first one on ebay with the 45 in it where they cover celtic frost. got all of 5 bucks for it. of course, the new HOF "sounds" great and the first two sounded horrible, so that might have something to do with it.

Speaking of Grief, buyabiznatch would probably like that band. Go for any of the albums on Pessimiser or Theologian, Torso probably first followed by And Man Shall Become the Hunted. That's slowed down drawn out riffing, recorded heavy with a vocalist who sounds like he has a torn throat. It's pretty monolithic and would have a high probability of appealing to fans of Dopesmoker. I listen to Grief way more often than Sleep.

Cheesy's no obstacle to liking lots of forms of metal, or just about any other genre. I find very little entertainment that's actually
cheese free. It's one of the fundamentals, like hydrogen on the periodic table.

I'm a fan of Trouble but my favorite albums are their last two -- Manic Frustration and Plastic Green Head. Right now, PGH is probably my fave. Their version of "The Porpoise Song" kills for incinerating wah'd guitar solo. Heavy psyche influence and Beatles/Monkees/Donovan love in late period Trouble.

Nebula was a highly regarded stoner rock band for awhile. Never was able to capitalize. Spirit Caravan catalog is good early (Jug Fulla Sun), falls apart toward the end. The Obsessed, another earlier Wino band was virtually identical. Hidden Hand is up and down. Did an album with Victor Griffin in Place of Skulls. Man, he does a lot of stuff.

i already bought jerusalem so i ain't picking up dopesmoker unless'n i see it for cheap. but jerusalem's ok, i guess. holy mountain is way better - though i think the genius doesn't really kick in until the second half of the album - as is OM.

and as much as saying things are overrated is overrated, i tend to agree with roger about saint vitus these days. reagers period is best, though the wino era has some killer tunes here and there it's really in essence a compromise between the best of vitus and the best of the obsessed which makes a kind of boring muddle at times.

Sleep's entire output is great.

I was a fan of Asbestos Death and Sleep Volume I. When Holy Mountain came out, I initially felt like it was a tasteless Sabbath rip-off.

Years later, I've come to realize that Sleep does a lot of things Sabbath never did. Sure there are some very obvious riffs/nods, but it's in tribute. There are all kinds of techniques and directions employed on Holy Mountain that Sabbath never would have touched.

Having said that, I think the first High on Fire record is the best thing any of these guys has ever done.

it's funny cuz i initially (for years!) tended to agree with those who found it it bit dull/underwhelming, relative to holy mountain. the idea was always cool, but the execution didn't do much for me. the more time i've spent with it, though, and the more familiar the procession of riff has become, the more i love it. and it's not always about the act of listening to it, exactly. sometimes it's just a nice thing to put on, a comfortable sort of din.

Holy Mountain is the one that has been done to death reissue wise. Discogs show just one proper 2xLP issue of Dopesmoker, in 2003, on Tee Pee. One of the copies is listed for ~$80.00. I'm fine with this reissue and will probably buy it.

i bought jerusalem on cd when it came out and it always sounded fine to me. little did i know it wasn't the REAL version. and yeah vinyl kinda defeats the purpose.

So four versions have been released: one is a promo, one is a bootleg, and one is an "unauthorized" edit. The other one is out of print and came out ~10 years ago. Not really seeing the issue here. I mean there are 36 versions of My Aim Is True.

this is better, but the green does not work. it should either be shade of green from the robes, or shade of the brown from the sands. and the font does not encapsulate the tone of the band at all.

the contrast works for me, what can i say? i like a little bit of pop in my graphics.

See, to me, the font evokes something good-natured, friendly, and somewhat futuristic. But it should evoke something mysterious, elaborate, hallucinogenic, and vaguely threatening. This was better communicated by the font on "Sleep's Holy Mountain," though even that album's art looked somewhat amateur and probably could have been greatly improved.

How's the remaster? I only have the "legit" release with the burning bush/hemp sweater cover.

I've just ordered the CD + T-shirt + Poster combo. Am tempted to get a vinyl copy for the awesome artwork too.

The remaster sounds pretty fantastic on CD, it's tastefully done. Hope to hear the LP soon.

gotta say i'm not that into the reissue. it does sound a lot clearer but i think that basically just accentuates matt pike which pushes it into HoF hesher territory as opposed to the plodding doom territory the early mix sits comfortably in.

the first "dopesmoker" CD (three headed horse) is a different recording from the original "jerusalem" release. it is also louder and bassier than the original jerusalem release. i think it is not as "clear" in the mid- and high-range as the dopesmoker reissue, but like i said i prefer the original versions (both jerusalem and dopesmoker) to the new one

Yeah, drummer from Neurosis drums on the live line-up. I saw them in, 2010 I guess, when they first started doing the live shows again. Bummed that I'm going to miss them this time. Positively titanic.

They absolutely destroyed at Roadburn last month. I'd never seen Sleep in person before, and was floored by their two-hour set.

played at a festival w/them in 2010 iirc & they were directly after us and opened right with a crushing Jerusalem/Dopesmoker riff section for about five min damn right I'm bragging, I got to geek out w/Pike & his son backstage afterwards

Saw them last week and it was uniformly excellent. No trouble hearing Cisneros either. Dopesmoker and Sonic Titan were the highlights.

Don't miss them if you get the chance.

And i still think Dopesmoker is better ;-)

So, that was special. I can't be the only person who thinks that. Equally so for Melvins and Yob as well. Just on fucking fire. Slayer put in a really good gig as well. Not 100% convinced by your man from Exodus but his guitar work on World Painted Blood was fucking ridiculously good and they played Die By The Sword.

The room where Yob & WITTR played didn't seem to have very good sound and it was way too small for Yob, I could hardly get in. The main stage bands were all great though.

I managed to get down to the front for the second half of Yob and it was better but I think Mike's genuinely uplifting stage persona and having the crowd really behind them made it for me. It's a real breath of fresh air having a very positive doom metal band just as light relief I think. I don't feel the same way about Black Metal though.

they seemed to be ironing out some sound issues while A Storm of Light were on cos they kind of sounded like ass but I thought it was fine by the time WITTR were on certainly

my brother visited a couple weeks ago and we were pretty high and we put on "jerusalem / dopesmoker" and while it is prtty good i honestly think the first three om albums are better. the riffs are better, the drumming is better, and the stoner mysticism is better, too.

there are many folks who might say "om > sleep" is heresy but fuiud imo. om > sleep

I dunno, I think I say Om > Sleep, too. Sleep has one good album, which means Sleep has one good song. Om doesn't have any bad songs.

Om is the worst.

I prefer Holy Mountain to Dopesmoker tbh. More fun, more of a variety of sounds, better lyrics like WITHIN THE OAKEN TOWER or RIDE THE DRAGON TOWARDS THE CRIMSON EYE.

First song on SHM is great; after that, it's a steep decline imo.

I like Sleep but find Om really boring.

God Dopesmoker is so fucking grand. I love that the first guitar solo doesn't show up for almost 15 minutes.

I love the way this is recorded and mixed -- I agree it's their best-sounding album

feels like they bridged the gap between Holy MOuntain and Dopesmoker a bit. there's nothing as drawn out as the latter obv, but they haven't really returned to their Sab-worship of HM outright either.

The new album was released here yesterday. Amazing. Tempted on first listens to call it their best. So well recorded. Listening to Al Cisneros' bass is such a joy.

Have seen both Om (twice - including the show Ned was at iirc) and High On Fire - the former more hypnotic and the latter more pummeling/shredding but both were good. Sleep is obviously somewhere in the middle
