Do I own too many Acid Mothers Temple albums?

Maybe not, because I only have five. And they all sound pretty good, too. But damned if I could tell them apart in a blindfold test; they all seem pretty interchangeable, near as I can tell. Though maybe I'm wrong. Which of these are the best? And how are they different?

1. Pataphysical Freakout Mu!
2. Mantra of Love
3. In C
4. Electric Heavyland
5. New Geocentric World

chuck, Wednesday, 28 April 2004 21:46 (twenty-two years ago)

And which AMT album should I buy tomorrow?

stephen morris (stephen morris), Wednesday, 28 April 2004 21:49 (twenty-two years ago)

I got a mainliner album today, they are super!

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Wednesday, 28 April 2004 21:49 (twenty-two years ago)

Get the triple disc thing Do Whatever You Want, Don't Do Whatever You Don't Want! It's the best (except for maybe La Novia.)

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Wednesday, 28 April 2004 21:51 (twenty-two years ago)

I think I have 10. But I stopped counting. I just keep buying them and throwing them in a drawer. Last one i got: The thing with the 3D cover that collects the 3 e.p.'s.

scott seward (scott seward), Wednesday, 28 April 2004 21:52 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh that one's really good too Magical Powers From Mars.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Wednesday, 28 April 2004 21:54 (twenty-two years ago)

Get the triple disc thing Do Whatever You Want, Don't Do Whatever You Don't Want! It's the best (except for maybe La Novia.)

Oh that one's really good too Magical Powers From Mars.

Heh -- I was about to post the exact same thing! In C and Electric Heavyland are also keepers, and that gets you five total.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Wednesday, 28 April 2004 21:55 (twenty-two years ago)

Someday I will ask the same question about Caroliner (and/or Caroliner Rainbow) albums, and Destroy All Monsters albums. (I know somebody just put up a thread on the latter, but I forget what all the albums I own by them are called.) (Actually, re: ATM, I DO know that *In C* is a Terry Riley cover version, duh. One of these days I'll figure out whether it's better than the Styrenes version.)

chuck, Wednesday, 28 April 2004 21:56 (twenty-two years ago)

one AMT album is too many.

hstencil (hstencil), Wednesday, 28 April 2004 21:58 (twenty-two years ago)

Another important point to consider is that the Angel in Heavy Syrup album I own is much better than any of the Acid Mothers Temple ones I own. At least in my humble opinion. For whatever that's worth.

chuck, Wednesday, 28 April 2004 21:59 (twenty-two years ago)

how many have you listened to in the past 12 months?

gygax! (gygax!), Wednesday, 28 April 2004 22:01 (twenty-two years ago)

in entirety?

gygax! (gygax!), Wednesday, 28 April 2004 22:01 (twenty-two years ago)

Um...Does listening after I fall alseep count??

chuck, Wednesday, 28 April 2004 22:04 (twenty-two years ago)

Do the murders my split personality commit count?

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Wednesday, 28 April 2004 22:06 (twenty-two years ago)

Sounds like you just increased your trading pile (unless you have trouble sleeping to anything excepting mild jap-psych). There may still be a market for those albums (???).

gygax! (gygax!), Wednesday, 28 April 2004 22:07 (twenty-two years ago)

I keep meaning to buy the live one with the 70's-era bootleg cover. Just for the cover.

scott seward (scott seward), Wednesday, 28 April 2004 22:07 (twenty-two years ago)

I think I own 10 Sun City Girls albums.

scott seward (scott seward), Wednesday, 28 April 2004 22:08 (twenty-two years ago)

I don't know if that's too many.

scott seward (scott seward), Wednesday, 28 April 2004 22:08 (twenty-two years ago)

Probably.

scott seward (scott seward), Wednesday, 28 April 2004 22:09 (twenty-two years ago)

But fuck the CDR shit. I'm not that insane.

scott seward (scott seward), Wednesday, 28 April 2004 22:10 (twenty-two years ago)

Hstencil OTM. Never saw the appeal. But then again I like Blue Oyster Cult, so maybe AMT isn't for me. Though I do really like Kawabata's Taj Mahal Travellers tribute band, Toho Sara.

10 Sun City Girls albums is definitely not too many. 5 Caroliner albums might be too many, but I won't be sure until I buy another one.

Chuck I should make you a copy of this disc by these japanese greasers Subvert Blaze, if you don't already have it (same label as the, yes great, Angel in Heavy Syrup.) They do a great cover of "Politician" by Cream, except they change the title. Or maybe they just rip off the riff. You'd like it.

Broheems (diamond), Wednesday, 28 April 2004 22:10 (twenty-two years ago)

I'd probably take the one and only Marble Sheep album I have over just about any AMT album, but I do dig them. And the 3D cover one is pretty friggin' great. I like that long-ass shit. I don't have anywhere to be in a hurry.

scott seward (scott seward), Wednesday, 28 April 2004 22:16 (twenty-two years ago)

The best AMT related album i've heard is the Kawabata/R.Youngs collaboration from a few years ago, all fuzzy/blurry accoustic guitar/electronics that the Animal Collective hyped youth would probably go bonkers for.

gygax! (gygax!), Wednesday, 28 April 2004 22:17 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah, oddly enough, having no AMT albums, I do have two Kawabata solo albums including the Richard Youngs collaboration. They're both pretty much amazing, so the only thing holding me back from the AMT dive is being completely unsure where to start.

stephen morris (stephen morris), Wednesday, 28 April 2004 22:27 (twenty-two years ago)

actually i think absolutely freak out & universe zen or the 2 with the most varied wackiness.i'd check them out

evan chronister (evan chronister), Wednesday, 28 April 2004 22:38 (twenty-two years ago)

But then again I like Blue Oyster Cult, so maybe AMT isn't for me.

Hey wait a minute, I like BOC as much as nearly anybody! And why do AMT remind you of BOC? Although that's actually a great anti-AMT headline: Harvester Of Lies! I might use that if I ever change my mind about them.

scott seward (scott seward), Wednesday, 28 April 2004 22:39 (twenty-two years ago)

AMT >>>>>> BOC

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Wednesday, 28 April 2004 22:46 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh, that was just a lil' wink-wink *nudge* at Alex in SF, who was running down the Long Island crew on some other thread. In favor of something Simon Reynolds likes, I think.

Broheems (diamond), Wednesday, 28 April 2004 22:47 (twenty-two years ago)

ha, x-post

Broheems (diamond), Wednesday, 28 April 2004 22:47 (twenty-two years ago)

I put on Secret Treaties once every year just to see if I'll like it and I never do.

I do like "Don't Fear the Reaper" though.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Wednesday, 28 April 2004 22:49 (twenty-two years ago)

What about "Burning For You"? "Doctor Wu"?

gygax! (gygax!), Wednesday, 28 April 2004 22:49 (twenty-two years ago)

BOC are beyond genius. Everybody knows that. there must be a good thread on them, no? I've never looked for it. Maybe I will.

scott seward (scott seward), Wednesday, 28 April 2004 22:52 (twenty-two years ago)

Not particularly.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Wednesday, 28 April 2004 22:54 (twenty-two years ago)

"Doctor Wu" is Steely Dan.

hstencil (hstencil), Wednesday, 28 April 2004 22:55 (twenty-two years ago)

Actually though, when BOC do the four guys on "stun guitar" thing, they kind of look like AMT. Doesn't AMT usually have like 20 guys on stage?

Broheems (diamond), Wednesday, 28 April 2004 22:55 (twenty-two years ago)

get the singles with the hologram covers! gotta catch 'em all! (tm)

geeta (geeta), Wednesday, 28 April 2004 22:55 (twenty-two years ago)

I LIKE HIGH RISE A LOT.

NUMBER 1 TERRY RILEY FAN (ex machina), Wednesday, 28 April 2004 22:55 (twenty-two years ago)

Was that a trick question, Gygax?

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Wednesday, 28 April 2004 22:56 (twenty-two years ago)

Funny, I was just thinking the same thing about the No Neck Blues Band (3 recs) and Arthur Doyle (5 I think). Ok, with Arthur Doyle it's pretty obvious, but I can't help thinking that there are better NNCK records than the ones I have (Live At Ken's Electric Lake, Letters From the Serth, Kindom of the Ghost or something - new one).

Daniel DiMAGGIO (Daniel DiMAGGIO), Wednesday, 28 April 2004 22:58 (twenty-two years ago)

La Novia is the best, fellas. I'm also in agreement with Ned re: Electric Heavyland and In C.

Ian Johnson (orion), Wednesday, 28 April 2004 22:59 (twenty-two years ago)

High Rise is much better than AMT, in my opinion.

hstencil (hstencil), Wednesday, 28 April 2004 22:59 (twenty-two years ago)

I like Amon Duul better than Blue Cheer and I always will.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Wednesday, 28 April 2004 23:00 (twenty-two years ago)

get the singles with the hologram covers! gotta catch 'em all! (tm)

Geeta, dude, have you heard that 3D thing? It's nice and crazy. You might like it.

scott seward (scott seward), Wednesday, 28 April 2004 23:01 (twenty-two years ago)

Steely Dan > Amon Duul > BOC > High Rise > Blue Cheer > AMT

hstencil (hstencil), Wednesday, 28 April 2004 23:01 (twenty-two years ago)

yes I am crazy, no I do not care.

hstencil (hstencil), Wednesday, 28 April 2004 23:02 (twenty-two years ago)

i don't get steely dan.

i think i'm too young.

Ian Johnson (orion), Wednesday, 28 April 2004 23:02 (twenty-two years ago)

I think I have 20 Felt records if you count 12 inches. But maybe you don't. Whoever "you" are.

scott seward (scott seward), Wednesday, 28 April 2004 23:02 (twenty-two years ago)

The singles with the hologram covers are all compiled on the 3D thing (aka Magical Powers From Mars.)

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Wednesday, 28 April 2004 23:03 (twenty-two years ago)

Ian, you haven't had yer post punk rock steely dan mid-life crisis yet. You will. It's inevitable.

scott seward (scott seward), Wednesday, 28 April 2004 23:03 (twenty-two years ago)

Gygax's Boredoms collection is enough to make women run to the hills, I wager

NUMBER 1 TERRY RILEY FAN (ex machina), Wednesday, 28 April 2004 23:04 (twenty-two years ago)

AMT > Amon Duul > Blue Cheer > High Rise > Steely Dan

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Wednesday, 28 April 2004 23:04 (twenty-two years ago)

I'd put Felt after Amon Duul and before BOC.

hstencil (hstencil), Wednesday, 28 April 2004 23:04 (twenty-two years ago)

20 Felt records is still not too many.

HOW MANY LOREN CONNORS RECORDS IS TOO MANY? I only have four and I may have already reached my limit.

Ian Johnson (orion), Wednesday, 28 April 2004 23:04 (twenty-two years ago)

Alex is far crazier than I am, obv.

hstencil (hstencil), Wednesday, 28 April 2004 23:04 (twenty-two years ago)

How many Led Zep bootlegs is too many? Ok, I may have said too much.

Broheems (diamond), Wednesday, 28 April 2004 23:05 (twenty-two years ago)

Loren Connors is like Derek Bailey: five max, but it's a pretty good five.

hstencil (hstencil), Wednesday, 28 April 2004 23:06 (twenty-two years ago)

AMT and Amon Duul are actually about tied, but I listen to the first disc of that 3CD thing and La Novia more than anything by Amon Duul so there ya go.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Wednesday, 28 April 2004 23:06 (twenty-two years ago)

I only have one Mott The Hoople bootleg. And that's 50 too few.

scott seward (scott seward), Wednesday, 28 April 2004 23:07 (twenty-two years ago)

do you listen to the last Ghost album more than you listen to Wolf City?

scott seward (scott seward), Wednesday, 28 April 2004 23:07 (twenty-two years ago)

No way are Bailey and Connors about equal, stence!! It's like

Takayanagi > Bailey > Rowe > Kaiser> Mazzacane Connors > Basho Junghans

Broheems (diamond), Wednesday, 28 April 2004 23:08 (twenty-two years ago)

haha, woah... i have had too much caffeine, i'm dismissing myself from ILX for the day.

gygax! (gygax!), Wednesday, 28 April 2004 23:08 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm not saying they're equal, just that you don't need more than five records by either of 'em.

hstencil (hstencil), Wednesday, 28 April 2004 23:09 (twenty-two years ago)

I listen to Tanz Der Lemminge the other day for the first time since December!

NUMBER 1 TERRY RILEY FAN (ex machina), Wednesday, 28 April 2004 23:09 (twenty-two years ago)

and "Basho"-Jungans sucks donkey balls, in my opinion.

hstencil (hstencil), Wednesday, 28 April 2004 23:09 (twenty-two years ago)

"Concluding with the groovy good-time "Sleepwalker's Timeless Bridge," including some fantastic e-bow guitar work, Wolf City works the balance between art and accessibility and does so with resounding success." — Ned Raggett

Ian Johnson (orion), Wednesday, 28 April 2004 23:10 (twenty-two years ago)

That's why I put him last!!

Broheems (diamond), Wednesday, 28 April 2004 23:10 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm changing my name to Scott Sandybull-Seward

scott seward (scott seward), Wednesday, 28 April 2004 23:12 (twenty-two years ago)

Steely Dan > Amon Duul > Takayanagi > BOC > Rowe > High Rise > Bailey > Mazzacane Connors > Blue Cheer > Kaiser> AMT > donkey balls > "Basho"-fuckface-whatever-Junghans

hstencil (hstencil), Wednesday, 28 April 2004 23:12 (twenty-two years ago)

h kottke-stencil.

hstencil (hstencil), Wednesday, 28 April 2004 23:12 (twenty-two years ago)

Steely Dan > Amon Duul > Takayanagi > BOC > Rowe > High Rise > Bailey > Mazzacane Connors > Blue Cheer > Kaiser> AMT >
donkey balls > "Basho"-fuckface-whatever-Junghans

where's Felt?

scott seward (scott seward), Wednesday, 28 April 2004 23:13 (twenty-two years ago)

John Fahey > Steely Dan > Amon Duul > Robbie Basho > Rakim > Takayanagi > Felt > BOC > Rowe > High Rise > Bailey > Mazzacane Connors > CCR > Blue Cheer > Kaiser> AMT > Justin Timberlake > donkey balls > "Basho"-fuckface-whatever-Junghans

h kottke-stencil (hstencil), Wednesday, 28 April 2004 23:14 (twenty-two years ago)

20 Felt records? The Television ripping off, English Felt? That's crazy talk. (I think one of those 2 albums on one disc things is more than enough.)

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Wednesday, 28 April 2004 23:14 (twenty-two years ago)

The last Ghost really did have some good Duul2 moments.

scott seward (scott seward), Wednesday, 28 April 2004 23:14 (twenty-two years ago)

hstencil make me a mix tape ok? you know more about things than me.

Ian Johnson (orion), Wednesday, 28 April 2004 23:15 (twenty-two years ago)

The Television ripping off, English Felt?

that's honestly the first time I've ever heard that! Television? Huh, whaddyaknow.

scott seward (scott seward), Wednesday, 28 April 2004 23:15 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah, the psych Felt only had like one album i think.

scott seward (scott seward), Wednesday, 28 April 2004 23:16 (twenty-two years ago)

Ian btw did you get a party invite? Or see my friendster bulletin?

hstencil (hstencil), Wednesday, 28 April 2004 23:16 (twenty-two years ago)

scott, ye olde Trouser Press compared Felt to Television way back when.

h kottke-stencil (hstencil), Wednesday, 28 April 2004 23:16 (twenty-two years ago)

I even have the first noise/lo-fi/diy Felt single.

scott seward (scott seward), Wednesday, 28 April 2004 23:17 (twenty-two years ago)

Felt > Television btw

But the geeeetar is totally a Television rip on those early records.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Wednesday, 28 April 2004 23:17 (twenty-two years ago)

I never read that. I guess I can see it. The last issue of Trouser Press I bought had Chrissie Hynde on the cover.

scott seward (scott seward), Wednesday, 28 April 2004 23:18 (twenty-two years ago)

sorry, I meant the old TP guide, not the magazine.

h kottke-stencil (hstencil), Wednesday, 28 April 2004 23:19 (twenty-two years ago)

The only Television i have any use for are the live versions of MM & LJJ on the RIOR thing. Sorry. Spit on me if you must.

scott seward (scott seward), Wednesday, 28 April 2004 23:19 (twenty-two years ago)

I've never even seen an issue of Trouser Press.

Also Television > Pretenders.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Wednesday, 28 April 2004 23:20 (twenty-two years ago)

I have an old 80's TP guide. I think they liked Peter & The Test Tube Babies okay.

scott seward (scott seward), Wednesday, 28 April 2004 23:20 (twenty-two years ago)

They were a little hard on the 4-Skins though.

scott seward (scott seward), Wednesday, 28 April 2004 23:20 (twenty-two years ago)

worst pun ever, scott.

h kottke-stencil (hstencil), Wednesday, 28 April 2004 23:21 (twenty-two years ago)

I really hope we get some Basho-Junghans googlers to come on this thread and honour the fire.

Scott, not even the Marquee Moon lp? Wow.

Bro-Faheyms (diamond), Wednesday, 28 April 2004 23:21 (twenty-two years ago)

-- Bro-Faheyms

Haha! That works really well.

scott seward (scott seward), Wednesday, 28 April 2004 23:22 (twenty-two years ago)

Marque Moon bores the hell out of me. Fuck Tom Verlaine and his lame ass poetry.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Wednesday, 28 April 2004 23:23 (twenty-two years ago)

Alex in Verlaine-SF.

h kottke-stencil (hstencil), Wednesday, 28 April 2004 23:23 (twenty-two years ago)

It's weird, I know. Maybe it's tied into me never caring for Mission Of Burma. Although I don't know how. I'm usually a pretty good knee-jerk critic's fave lover.

scott seward (scott seward), Wednesday, 28 April 2004 23:23 (twenty-two years ago)

Side 2 is definitely a let-down.

Bro-Faheyms (diamond), Wednesday, 28 April 2004 23:24 (twenty-two years ago)

But those two songs on the ROIR thing? I could listen to them over and over all day long! And i have.

scott seward (scott seward), Wednesday, 28 April 2004 23:24 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm not a dream syndicate fan either.

scott seward (scott seward), Wednesday, 28 April 2004 23:27 (twenty-two years ago)

Hmmm .. how many Television records is too many? Counting bootlegs I think I have like 8. And I don't even have that new Rhino Handmade live thing yet! But I fully admit that is too many.

Mission of Burma never connected very strongly with me either.

Bro-Faheyms (diamond), Wednesday, 28 April 2004 23:27 (twenty-two years ago)

MOB were too anal or something for me. Which doesn't make any sense either cuz i'm a big Feelies fan.

scott seward (scott seward), Wednesday, 28 April 2004 23:28 (twenty-two years ago)

Dream Syndicate have like one good song.

Mission of Burma, on the other hand, have a bunch of great songs.

None of these bands are as good as their English counterparts for some reason.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Wednesday, 28 April 2004 23:29 (twenty-two years ago)

The Feelies were so great live with the fidgety perpetual anal thing.

scott seward (scott seward), Wednesday, 28 April 2004 23:30 (twenty-two years ago)

Where's my friggin' feelies reunion? to hell with fat black and his crew of misfits.

scott seward (scott seward), Wednesday, 28 April 2004 23:30 (twenty-two years ago)

I wanna make a "greater-than" flowchart for like everything.

h kottke-stencil (hstencil), Wednesday, 28 April 2004 23:31 (twenty-two years ago)

haha do it stence

mullygrubber (gaz), Wednesday, 28 April 2004 23:32 (twenty-two years ago)

I have a lot of free time, but not THAT MUCH.

h kottke-stencil (hstencil), Wednesday, 28 April 2004 23:33 (twenty-two years ago)

Gygax's Boredoms collection is enough to make women run to the hills, I wager

whatever dude, i know plenty of girls who are into boredoms. their later krautrock-bliss stuff is great make-out music (some of their side-projects are bad make-out music, tho: dj carhouse and mc hellshit, for instance)

geeta (geeta), Wednesday, 28 April 2004 23:40 (twenty-two years ago)

I said it the other day on here, but again, that first Dream Syndicate EP on the Down There label is cool.

Tim Ellison, Wednesday, 28 April 2004 23:51 (twenty-two years ago)

The only e.p. i had was the live one, but i don't remember the label. I bought it cuz my local college radio station was always playing that live version of "tell me when its over" and i liked that song.

scott seward (scott seward), Wednesday, 28 April 2004 23:57 (twenty-two years ago)

Hmmn that's the Dream Syndicate song I like too.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Thursday, 29 April 2004 00:03 (twenty-two years ago)

And i don't even like the studio version half as much as the live version.

scott seward (scott seward), Thursday, 29 April 2004 00:08 (twenty-two years ago)

They always struck me as a much more boring Jesus and Mary Chain.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Thursday, 29 April 2004 00:09 (twenty-two years ago)

I think it was just the Velvet's thing though, cuz really they don't sound very much alike.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Thursday, 29 April 2004 00:10 (twenty-two years ago)

They were no Bizarros, lets put it that way.

scott seward (scott seward), Thursday, 29 April 2004 00:13 (twenty-two years ago)

this thread is crying out for more greater-than flowcharts!

h kottke-stencil (hstencil), Thursday, 29 April 2004 00:14 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah, no, that first DS EP was done in some cheap studio and released on a small label that had psuedo-Impulse graphics. I wasn't talking about that live record. That label also put out a Green on Red EP.

Tim Ellison, Thursday, 29 April 2004 00:21 (twenty-two years ago)

BTW, that first Dream Syndicate EP DOES sound like the Velvet Underground (first two albums), actually! Like I say, a cool record.

Tim Ellison, Thursday, 29 April 2004 00:38 (twenty-two years ago)

I believe it. I don't think they were untalented, the other stuff just never did anything for me.

scott seward (scott seward), Thursday, 29 April 2004 01:05 (twenty-two years ago)

WHARE ARE FL0WCH4RTZ>>>?

Ian Johnson (orion), Thursday, 29 April 2004 01:08 (twenty-two years ago)

Animal Collective hyped youth

ha, this is how you know you're a rock critic (or thereabouts), as very few of my friends have even heard of AC. Acid Mothers on the other hand, are one of the few bands I'd be sure to see play whenever possible (granted, I'm in Texas). As far as the albums go, yeah, you don't really need everything. In C = my fave, though have yet to hear new one. I like it better when they do hazy and mysterious better than overdriven and chaotic. High Rise is the master of that shit.

dleone (dleone), Thursday, 29 April 2004 01:35 (twenty-two years ago)

I've seen both high rise and amt...and think amt pull off the overdriven chaos better than amt, but not as good as comets on fire.

ddddddddddb, Thursday, 29 April 2004 01:40 (twenty-two years ago)

which of those amts is supposed to be mainliner?

i saw comets on fire in my friend's old space in providence w. sunburned hand of the man last summer, so drunk & stoned. the days of the $10 thirty pack of genny cream ale are long past, for better or worse. comets on fire were amazing. it was perhaps the only time i bought a shirt from a band and the small was actually too small for me. so now i have this rad shirt that i stretched all out and never wear. bummer.

Ian Johnson (orion), Thursday, 29 April 2004 01:44 (twenty-two years ago)

yes, and mainliner I think is on par w/high rise for the crazy stuff.

dleone (dleone), Thursday, 29 April 2004 01:46 (twenty-two years ago)

You'd probably like Mainliner's Mellow Out, which is Kawabata of AMT & Nanjo of High Rise.

Kawabata says he wants to be Zappa, hence the millions of records. I'm starting to burn out and only keeping a choice few, trading in the others towards a Tomokawa box I think.

Brian Turner (btwfmu), Thursday, 29 April 2004 01:54 (twenty-two years ago)

whatever dude, i know plenty of girls who are into boredoms.
Where can I meet these sorts of women??

Barry Bruner (Barry Bruner), Thursday, 29 April 2004 01:57 (twenty-two years ago)

For what it's worth though, AMT still throw some curves and offer ideas I've yet to hear from them. The last time at North Six when it was the Acid Mothers Collective (i.e. three sets of either solo or duo/trio type set-ups within the band) I was pretty into it. Seeing the one-time-only NYC Mainliner show was a big thrill back in 98 or whenever. I like up-and-comers in the Japanese psych scene Miminokoto and Uptight quite a bit at the moment...

Brian Turner (btwfmu), Thursday, 29 April 2004 01:58 (twenty-two years ago)

Do you guys like MONG HANG?? Saw them on their firrst us tour last summer (same summer i saw comets on fire!) in another loft in the same building. wooooaooh. crazy costumes, funky rhythms, crane poses & weird rock grooves. the drummer drank TONS OF BEER.

Ian Johnson (orion), Thursday, 29 April 2004 02:02 (twenty-two years ago)

Mong Hang. Great drummer, I think the band is a notch more prog than AMT and this ilk. Reminded me of Gentle Giant w/more psych tendencies.

dleone (dleone), Thursday, 29 April 2004 02:06 (twenty-two years ago)

Ian Johnson (orion), Thursday, 29 April 2004 02:13 (twenty-two years ago)

Koenji Hyakkei are an amazing prog-worshipping band from Japan. Members of Ruins, who are already kinda Magma-ish, getting TOTALLY Magma-ish with big crazy vocal ensemble and more instrumentation. I just downloaded a live thing that was pretty fantastic...

Brian Turner (btwfmu), Thursday, 29 April 2004 02:16 (twenty-two years ago)

Hey, since Brian's here it reminds me that the Janitor From Mars needs some love. His premium give-away CD is one of my all-time top Japanese records! Seriously, he plays tons of this kind of stuff.

Broheems (diamond), Thursday, 29 April 2004 02:23 (twenty-two years ago)

Koenji = one of my all time faves. seriously, their first two records are greatness. ¢¾ ¢¾ ¢¾

dleone (dleone), Thursday, 29 April 2004 02:25 (twenty-two years ago)

those are supposed to be hearts

dleone (dleone), Thursday, 29 April 2004 02:26 (twenty-two years ago)

Is that the 100 Sights of Koenji? Or something like that? I heard that one is awesome but it's o/p -- if you're up for a cdr trade I'm sure I can dig something out you might want?

Yep, The Janitor's Japanese CD premium was great (always great) --- last year there was a Golden Cups track that kicks my ass every time.

Brian Turner (btwfmu), Thursday, 29 April 2004 02:30 (twenty-two years ago)

Yeah, Koenji's discography is:
Hundred Sights of Koenji (1994)
II (aka Viva Koenji) (1997)
NIVRAYM (2001)

One of the coolest bands ever, IMO Yoshida's best band. All oop, perhaps except last one. II is in my top ten all time. email if you want to trade

dleone (dleone), Thursday, 29 April 2004 02:36 (twenty-two years ago)

AMT never got more than an eyebrow rise out of me until I saw 'em live. That I would do again in, um, about 17 days. But I still only own [Electric Heavyland]. Oh, and some split thing with Kinski that's on the endangered-disc list.

Dock Miles (Dock Miles), Thursday, 29 April 2004 02:40 (twenty-two years ago)

where is jon williams???

Ian Johnson (orion), Thursday, 29 April 2004 03:02 (twenty-two years ago)

God, I forgot about the Kinski thing. I say dud, but I'll listen again. First time I played it it bored me to tears. And not the good kind of tears.

scott seward (scott seward), Thursday, 29 April 2004 03:06 (twenty-two years ago)

the Mainliner and High Rise show was one of the most amazing things ever.

hstencil (hstencil), Thursday, 29 April 2004 03:12 (twenty-two years ago)

I HATE YOU.

(back to the bonghits now!!!)

Ian Johnson (orion), Thursday, 29 April 2004 03:14 (twenty-two years ago)

High Rise are definitely in my top ten live shows of all time. If I had such a list of ten shows.

scott seward (scott seward), Thursday, 29 April 2004 03:14 (twenty-two years ago)

But then so are Ghost. And Lonnie Mack. And The Feelies. And Verbal Assault.

scott seward (scott seward), Thursday, 29 April 2004 03:15 (twenty-two years ago)

And Swans. And George Crumb. And The Residents.

scott seward (scott seward), Thursday, 29 April 2004 03:16 (twenty-two years ago)

my roommate's lap steel is made of aluminum, and he often plays it with an ebow.

Ian Johnson (orion), Thursday, 29 April 2004 03:16 (twenty-two years ago)

And Throwing Muses. And Willie Nelson. And Dog Faced Hermans.

scott seward (scott seward), Thursday, 29 April 2004 03:19 (twenty-two years ago)

And Rush.

scott seward (scott seward), Thursday, 29 April 2004 03:19 (twenty-two years ago)

Wait, that's 12. And I forgot Dizzy Gillespie.

scott seward (scott seward), Thursday, 29 April 2004 03:21 (twenty-two years ago)

Dizzy Gillespie > Willie Nelson > George Crumb > Dog Faced Hermans > Lonnie Mack > Ghost > Swans > High Rise > Verbal Assault > The Feelies > The Residents > Throwing Muses > AMT > Frank Zappa > donkey balls > "Basho"-fuckface > Eric Clapton > Ringo

Swans > AMT > The Feelies > Dizzy Gillespie > High Rise > Lonnie Mack > Ghost > Dog Faced Hermans > Willie Nelson > Verbal Assault > The Residents > donkey balls > Throwing Muses > Frank Zappa > "Basho"-fuckface > Eric Clapton > Ringo

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Thursday, 29 April 2004 03:30 (twenty-two years ago)

where's George Crumb?

hstencil (hstencil), Thursday, 29 April 2004 03:31 (twenty-two years ago)

I don't know who he is.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Thursday, 29 April 2004 03:32 (twenty-two years ago)

Actually I don't know who Basho is either, but his last name is fuckface so he can't be good.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Thursday, 29 April 2004 03:33 (twenty-two years ago)

trust me, "Basho"-fuckface is very very bad.

George Crumb, on the other hand, is very very good.

hstencil (hstencil), Thursday, 29 April 2004 03:33 (twenty-two years ago)

Swans > AMT > The Feelies > Dizzy Gillespie > High Rise > Lonnie Mack > Robert Crumb > Ghost > Dog Faced Hermans > Willie Nelson > Verbal Assault > The Residents > donkey balls > Throwing Muses > Frank Zappa > "Basho"-fuckface > Eric Clapton > Ringo

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Thursday, 29 April 2004 03:34 (twenty-two years ago)

at least as good as the Residents, which makes him better than donkey balls and Frank Zappa.

hstencil (hstencil), Thursday, 29 April 2004 03:34 (twenty-two years ago)

Robert Crumb > donkey balls > cartoons for the New Yorker Robert Crumb draws with his wife

hstencil (hstencil), Thursday, 29 April 2004 03:35 (twenty-two years ago)

I don't get the New Yorker.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Thursday, 29 April 2004 03:35 (twenty-two years ago)

more people get it in California than New York now.

hstencil (hstencil), Thursday, 29 April 2004 03:36 (twenty-two years ago)

I do find Aline Kominsky-Crumb's art um somewhat difficult to get into.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Thursday, 29 April 2004 03:36 (twenty-two years ago)

I'm thinking of catching the AMTs for my birthing day, fancy a gig?

Leeee > birthing day > fancy > catching > California > AMT

er, what now?

hstencil (hstencil), Thursday, 29 April 2004 03:38 (twenty-two years ago)

I drank way too much coffee today.

hstencil (hstencil), Thursday, 29 April 2004 03:38 (twenty-two years ago)

Where are they playing, Leeeee?

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Thursday, 29 April 2004 03:38 (twenty-two years ago)

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Thursday, 29 April 2004 03:45 (twenty-two years ago)

First Friday & Saturday of June.

Leeefuse 73 (Leee), Thursday, 29 April 2004 03:53 (twenty-two years ago)

you're so grasping.

hstencil (hstencil), Thursday, 29 April 2004 04:02 (twenty-two years ago)

hstencil (hstencil), Thursday, 29 April 2004 04:03 (twenty-two years ago)

You like Chicago a lot

dleone (dleone), Thursday, 29 April 2004 04:03 (twenty-two years ago)

hey man, they got some good tunes.

hstencil (hstencil), Thursday, 29 April 2004 04:04 (twenty-two years ago)

dude knows his jazz

cinniblount (James Blount), Thursday, 29 April 2004 04:04 (twenty-two years ago)

and they did free-form guitar freakout LONG before your Japanese bands, pal.

hstencil (hstencil), Thursday, 29 April 2004 04:04 (twenty-two years ago)

"Wishing You Were Here" has sentimental value, the rest can take or leave

dleone (dleone), Thursday, 29 April 2004 04:05 (twenty-two years ago)

does anybody REALLY know what time it is?

hstencil (hstencil), Thursday, 29 April 2004 04:06 (twenty-two years ago)

it's some heavy shit

cinniblount (James Blount), Thursday, 29 April 2004 04:06 (twenty-two years ago)

does anybody REALLY care?

hstencil (hstencil), Thursday, 29 April 2004 04:06 (twenty-two years ago)

c'mon people or I'll start into "Saturday in the Park." You don't want that.

hstencil (hstencil), Thursday, 29 April 2004 04:11 (twenty-two years ago)

actually, 80s Chicago has stuff to offer. "Stay the Night" affected 9-year-old me.

dleone (dleone), Thursday, 29 April 2004 04:13 (twenty-two years ago)

now that's just sad, son.

hstencil (hstencil), Thursday, 29 April 2004 04:14 (twenty-two years ago)

I was 9. It was either that or the Hill Street Blues theme.

dleone (dleone), Thursday, 29 April 2004 04:16 (twenty-two years ago)

Hill Street Blues > donkey balls > "Stay the Night"

hstencil (hstencil), Thursday, 29 April 2004 04:17 (twenty-two years ago)

I mean that's a no-brainer.

hstencil (hstencil), Thursday, 29 April 2004 04:17 (twenty-two years ago)

mike post represent!

cinniblount (James Blount), Thursday, 29 April 2004 04:18 (twenty-two years ago)

what about Hard Habit to Break?

dleone (dleone), Thursday, 29 April 2004 04:18 (twenty-two years ago)

is that the bauhaus one?

cinniblount (James Blount), Thursday, 29 April 2004 04:18 (twenty-two years ago)

"Hard Habit to Break," now you're talkin'!

hstencil (hstencil), Thursday, 29 April 2004 04:19 (twenty-two years ago)

still no "25 or 6 to 4," tho.

hstencil (hstencil), Thursday, 29 April 2004 04:19 (twenty-two years ago)

Well, we're talking different eras. 80s drama gets rarely better than "Hard Habit to Break". I mean, why do you think they got Peter Cetera to do the theme song to Karate Kid II??

dleone (dleone), Thursday, 29 April 2004 04:24 (twenty-two years ago)

because whomever did the theme to part 1 wasn't available?

hstencil (hstencil), Thursday, 29 April 2004 04:25 (twenty-two years ago)

what was the theme to part I? I can only remember "Cruel Summer".

dleone (dleone), Thursday, 29 April 2004 04:26 (twenty-two years ago)

when i was a kid, ten or so, i doubted i would ever hear a slowdance song better than "you're the inspiration"

john lennon did the theme to the first one

cinniblount (James Blount), Thursday, 29 April 2004 04:26 (twenty-two years ago)

this is just wrong.

hstencil (hstencil), Thursday, 29 April 2004 04:27 (twenty-two years ago)

I have to readjust my rankings for John Lennon now, thanks a million blount.

hstencil (hstencil), Thursday, 29 April 2004 04:29 (twenty-two years ago)

What the hell is going on? I just tried to download Stay the Night, and it disappeared. What was really the theme to part 1?

dleone (dleone), Thursday, 29 April 2004 04:31 (twenty-two years ago)

haha, this thread is great. geeta, you know you wanna check out my collection! ;-D ps: is the wire out yet?

gygax! (gygax!), Thursday, 29 April 2004 04:32 (twenty-two years ago)

I dunno, IMDB doesn't list soundtrack info. MAJOR flaw.

hstencil (hstencil), Thursday, 29 April 2004 04:33 (twenty-two years ago)

you are all fuckers.

Ian Johnson (orion), Thursday, 29 April 2004 04:35 (twenty-two years ago)

Angel in Heavy Syrup

Great band.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 29 April 2004 04:36 (twenty-two years ago)

I am so listening to Wishing You Were Here now. Featuring the Beach Boys. This is a great song. *heart*

dleone (dleone), Thursday, 29 April 2004 04:38 (twenty-two years ago)

This thread is fucked. No love for Steffen Basho-Junghans? Inside is terrific. He's moved well beyond the early Basho worship, some of the stuff he's now doing reminds me more of Hans Reichel I guess...

Chuck, La Novia and Absolutely Freakout! are the two best AMT records I've got. La Novia is one long Steeleye Span-meets-Amon Duul II type jam thing inspired by Provencal folk music and featuring some amazing throat singing by Tsuyama Atsushi. Absolutely Freakout! is more varied with bigs chunks of psych-noise plus a lot of electronic experiment and Terry Riley worship.

Talking of Tsuyama Atsushi - this looks like fun:

http://www.japanimprov.com/indies/fmn/humanhorse.jpg

Anyone heard it?

NickB (NickB), Thursday, 29 April 2004 08:07 (twenty-two years ago)

this thread is like the music office of a college radio station. in a good way, i think.

Dave M. (rotten03), Thursday, 29 April 2004 08:21 (twenty-two years ago)

Hey ho, and BTW Scott - steer clear of the Live in Occident double if you're interested in anything other than the sleeve. It's alright I suppose but the sound is terrible.

NickB (NickB), Thursday, 29 April 2004 08:28 (twenty-two years ago)

agreed, that one is not so good. i only have New Geocentric World and pull it out every fourteen months or so, thinking "this is awesome. i should listen more often!" and then put it away for fourteen months or so.

Dave M. (rotten03), Thursday, 29 April 2004 08:49 (twenty-two years ago)

This thread could be final proof that I'm on the wrong timezone.

I guess I sorta hinted at it but I don't get the fuss made about AMT. I think kabawata really cut the good stuff when he's with Nanjo in mainliner and high rise is just as good.

I better not get into some of the other tangents this thread went into cause I could be here all day.

Julio Desouza (jdesouza), Thursday, 29 April 2004 10:27 (twenty-two years ago)

Gasaneta - High Rise playing guitar solos with oven mitts with the fidelity of mud. Anything available besides the PSF disc?

Brian Turner (btwfmu), Thursday, 29 April 2004 12:36 (twenty-two years ago)

He's moved well beyond the early Basho worship, some of the stuff he's now doing reminds me more of Hans Reichel I guess...

Maybe he should call himself Steffan-Hans Basho-Reichel-Jungens-fuckface, then.

h kottke-stencil (hstencil), Thursday, 29 April 2004 12:37 (twenty-two years ago)

I actually like Basho-Junghans albums quite a bit, but that's just me maybe.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Thursday, 29 April 2004 12:59 (twenty-two years ago)

The theme to Karate Kid I was You're The Best....AROUND! NOTHINGS EVER GONNA TAKE YOU DOWN! Don't ask me who sang it.
High Rise "Durophet" live lp is one convincing document of the power of that particular group.
I saw AMT at Terrastock. It was cool, but they were the last band of the whole three day shindig, and thus had to be somewhat anticlimactic. Looking forward to seeing them headline a show on this upcoming tour.
I saw Mong Hang in 99 in NYC as part of a CMJ marathon. This thread really is like the office of a college radio station.

Sean Witzman (trip maker), Thursday, 29 April 2004 13:00 (twenty-two years ago)

Ned, what I've heard hasn't excited me, but what really ticks me off more than his music is the pretentious naming.

h kottke-stencil (hstencil), Thursday, 29 April 2004 13:01 (twenty-two years ago)

I think the name was more of a tribute than anything else.

NickB (NickB), Thursday, 29 April 2004 13:07 (twenty-two years ago)

it reminds me of Mormons reclaiming dead people as LDS.

h kottke-stencil (hstencil), Thursday, 29 April 2004 13:08 (twenty-two years ago)

I only have three AMT discs now. I decided, after much thought, that I didn't need to own both Electric Heavyland and Mainliner's Mellow Out, so I kept the Mainliner. Their PSF album, Imaginative Plain, is great, too.

The AMT stuff I own: Live In Japan (the one in the white Mothers-ripoff sleeve), Univers de zero zero or whatever, and Magical Power From Mars. In addition to Electric Heavyland, I got rid of the new one on Alien8 after writing it up for The Wire (June issue, I think). I also have Kawabata's solo disc Hot Rattlesnakes, which is mostly worthwhile.

I just got a double CD set by that Basho asshole the other week. Gah. Awful stuff, even worse than most acoustic guitar music (a guitar without an amp is a guitar not living up to its potential, as far as I'm concerned).

Phil Freeman (Phil Freeman), Thursday, 29 April 2004 13:11 (twenty-two years ago)

you should really hear some Fahey or ROBBIE Basho, you might rethink your position on acoustic guitar.

hstencil (hstencil), Thursday, 29 April 2004 13:13 (twenty-two years ago)

Talking of Tsuyama Atsushi - this looks like fun

Yes, this is a good record - very folkish, not heavy like AMT. It's kind of a cross between acoustic Brit psych-folk and traditional Japanese music.

dleone (dleone), Thursday, 29 April 2004 13:16 (twenty-two years ago)

it reminds me of Mormons reclaiming dead people as LDS.

This is funny. Robbie Basho was actually named Daniel Robinson as a kid and changed his name to Robbie Basho as a tribute to the Japanese poet. I guess that's the same thing.

NickB (NickB), Thursday, 29 April 2004 13:36 (twenty-two years ago)

Thanks Dominique. Might pick it up - sounds similar to the other solo thing of his I have (Is This A Pencil Or Is This A Sheep?).

NickB (NickB), Thursday, 29 April 2004 13:38 (twenty-two years ago)

>you should really hear some Fahey

I admit I've only ever heard one Fahey track, but that one sucked. It was a "piece for detuned acoustic guitar" on a CD that came with an issue of Halana, and the worst Jandek song I've ever heard sounded like Steve Vai in comparison.

Phil Freeman (Phil Freeman), Thursday, 29 April 2004 14:05 (twenty-two years ago)

phil -- search fahey's transmogrification of blind joe death album.

Ian Johnson (orion), Thursday, 29 April 2004 14:20 (twenty-two years ago)

>unless you have trouble sleeping to anything excepting mild jap-psych<

Well, sometimes, believe it or not, it helps cure insomnia a LOT. And I mean that as a compliment! Let's just say I've listened to way more BEGINNINGS of mid jap-psych albums than ENDS of same. (See, Michael Daddino HAS taught me a thing or two about what counts in music.)

Anyway, it's funny how long this thread got after I left work last night. It was supposed to be a joke, or something. And I actually prefer Ghost to ATM. But still: thanks, everybody, for all the help!

chuck, Thursday, 29 April 2004 15:09 (twenty-two years ago)

See, Michael Daddino HAS taught me a thing or two about what counts in music.

Hurrah!

It was supposed to be a joke, or something.

On ILM, nothing is a joke. Alternately, everything is.

I think "Magical Power" is my favorite, and I have six. Seven if you count the split with Kinski.

On the other hand, I have 25 NNCK albums. And I've listened to all of them a lot. Uh...anyone ever needs recommendations there, I can give em.

trees (treesessplode), Sunday, 19 March 2006 23:17 (twenty years ago)

Does anybody know if AMT collaboration with Afrirampo is any good???

xgurggleglgllg (xgurggleglgllg), Sunday, 19 March 2006 23:34 (twenty years ago)

i was collecting their hologram covers for a while. thank god i stopped.

geeta (geeta), Sunday, 19 March 2006 23:39 (twenty years ago)

from the rolling metal thread:

Acid Mothers Temple and the Cosmic Inferno *Starless and Bible Black Sabbath* sounds exactly the fucking same as every other Acid Mothers Temple album I've ever heard (well, except for the one where they covered Terry Riley's *In C,* since that one also kind of sounded like Terry Riley), For all I know, they just release the same album over and over again in new cool covers. (This one has a *very* cool cover, for whatever it's worth. And a cool name too, obviously.) As I believe I posted somewhere else on here once, they are sort of a conundrum in that it makes no sense whatsoever to own more than one album by them, but at the same time, their albums always seem to cool to get rid of. Oh well.
-- xhuxk (xedd...), February 17th, 2006.

(and not just "cool" by the way; also *beautiful*. Just made it through the the new one's 32 minute or so title cut -- 1 of only 2 cuts on it -- while puttering around the house {putting away CDs, washing dishes, getting pork stroganoff ready for tomorrow's lunch, cracking open a cold one} and it was quite relaxing. Basically 31 minutes of lovely feedback improv bullshit followed by 1 minute of dub echo and horror voices bullshit. nice! but if the phrase "guilty pleasure" means anything, this stuff is filed in that category in my book.)
-- xhuxk (xedd...), February 17th, 2006.

i always end up buying Acid Mother's tour only stuff - even though it's more expensive than anything i ever see in stores. who's putting out this new record?
-- blackmail (blackmai...), February 17th, 2006.

Just made it through the the new one's 32 minute or so title cut -- 1 of only 2 cuts on it -- while puttering around the house
You gotta be kidding me. They backed David Allen for a Gong record -- Acid Mothergong, I think -- and he made them stick to mostly three and four minute numbers.
Now technically, there are a couple twenty minutes numbers on Emerson, Lake & Palmer's Then & Now but they're really not one long number, but a series of shorter tunes, some of which got passed off as pop on the radio. Like twenty minutes of "Take a Pebble Suite" has "Still You Turn Me On," "Lucky Man" and a couple other things in it.
-- George the Animal Steele (george_the_animal_steele...), February 17th, 2006.

One of the reason's I got off the bus for Yes' Tales of the Topographic Chinchbug. One song per side, if it hadn't been vinyl and physically limited in terms of inner groove distortion, they easily would have went to thirty minutes. Vinyl was good for some things!
-- George the Animal Steele (george_the_animal_steele...), February 17th, 2006.

>who's putting out this new record?<
alien 8 (out of, uh, quebec i think.) doubt i'll listen to it again, to be honest. life is short.
-- xhuxk (xedd...), February 17th, 2006.

AMT = the new Fall? a new label puts out every other record! this one has a cooler title than most...i wonder if it's like what people say about star trek movies, you know, that every even numbered one is o.k.
-- blackmail (blackmai...), February 17th, 2006.

Trying to put together and number an AMT discography at this point seems like one of those brain-shattering tasks that drive Lovecraftian narrators mad.

xhuxk, Sunday, 19 March 2006 23:54 (twenty years ago)

I heard the new album at my college radio station director friend's house the other day and it's pretty great, though probably not top five. I'll probably be making the pilgrimage to the Chicago show.

ghost dong (Sonny A.), Monday, 20 March 2006 02:16 (twenty years ago)

"Starless and Bible Black Sabbath" is freakin' awesome. i've listened to it 3 times since i got it 2 days ago.

My favorite is probably "Wild Gals A Go-Go"

Mantra of Love, excellent.... I'd also nominate some of the music that falls within the "Acid Mothers" family but not is the Temple themselves, such as Uchu, their limited releases "uch 1st" and "buddha" are excellent, I think they were being re-pressed on CD though who the hell knows. Also the floating flower is amazing, why won't they re-release that on CD?

Instead, another week and a new AMT album is released, and I can't help buying it. I do not know why.

Xanadu, Saturday, 22 April 2006 07:43 (twenty years ago)

they did rerelease both of the floating flower recordings on cd a while back. or do you mean rerelease the rerelease?

and yeah, they were amazing and kind of got lost in the shitstorm of AMT releases.

GOD PUNCH TO HAWKWIND (yournullfame), Saturday, 22 April 2006 11:27 (twenty years ago)

Yeah I did mean that. I see Black Plastic Sound (USA) reissues their first and second CDRs on one CD in 2002.

There was some talk on the AMT BBS in march of this year about re-issuing both the Floating Flower CDs and the Uchu CDs, though I do not know if it will happen. Correction, it appears as if the Floating Flower CDs will be re-issued again: http://www.featheredspiritofmother.com/upcoming.html

Xanadu, Saturday, 22 April 2006 21:34 (twenty years ago)

i only own ONE amt album, a random tour release, and it's fine, but to me they're mostly a live band. i've seen them the last 3 times in nyc, which isn't much but it's more than i've seen any other band in the last 3 years. at this week's i realized that what is true of their albums is true of their shows too -- they're all more or less the same and they're all great fun. one of my friends called it the happiest loud music he's ever heard, which is right, and is why i think there's this lurking suspicion that it may be more soporific than revelatory. but you know, a good soporific has its place.

gypsy mothra (gypsy mothra), Saturday, 22 April 2006 22:52 (twenty years ago)

Oh, I forgot to mention that I own 25 AMT albums (excluding 7 or so releases by other AMT-related bands/persons), and no I do not consider it to be too much. Their new relese 'Have You Seen The Other Side Of The Sky?" is a bit different than their other releases, though it is comparable to 'Does The Cosmic Shepard Dream of Electric Tapir?" (nice PKD reference).

I would have to agree that they generally do not push their music in any new directions, but they are about the only band that I can think of whom I don't mind releasing similiar sounding music over and over again, because generally they do it very well.

I think I'm going to buy some more today! AMT start their UK tour in Bristol this evening. Anyone going? I'm stupidly excited at the moment.

Joe Grassby (sloejoe), Tuesday, 7 November 2006 09:54 (nineteen years ago)

Acid Mother Temple playing with Voice of the Seven Woods in a secret basement space in Manchester on the 18th with Andy Votel, B-Music buddies, Graham Massey and Mushrumps crew playing prog disco until the early morning. Yes i'm very excited indeed!

Tickets a tenner from www.mushrumps.com *ahem*

Ashley Kennerley (ForrestShrump), Thursday, 9 November 2006 14:46 (nineteen years ago)

Shit that sounds outrageously good. I saw AMT / VOTSW playing last night, really fun night it was too

Feargal Hixxy (DJ Mencap), Thursday, 9 November 2006 15:29 (nineteen years ago)

Dayamn... I just saw them last night in Glasgow and they were spectacular.

Here's their UK tour list: http://www.acidmothers.com/Cgi-bin/index_pre061209/latesttourdetails.html

Everyone go see them!

Magnakai (Magnakai), Wednesday, 15 November 2006 10:32 (nineteen years ago)

that they were...and their stall added handsomely to my already arguably excessive AMT collection.

mister the guanoman (mister the guanoman), Wednesday, 15 November 2006 11:12 (nineteen years ago)

Maybe one of you could answer a question. A couple of years back at ATP in Camber, AMT did a live pysch-madrigal thing which included some acapella parts of Steeleye Span's Gaudete. Apparently it's something they do every now and again.

Has anyone any idea what it is called? Is it available on any live tapes (date and venue would be good)? Cos it was absolutely phenomenal and I would love to own a version. I know of at least one other ILXor who would also appreciate it.

Thanks

Guilty Boksen (Bro_Danielson), Wednesday, 15 November 2006 12:49 (nineteen years ago)

Maybe a version of 'La Novia'? Its an Occitan piece that starts with three-way harmonies.

Joe Grassby (sloejoe), Wednesday, 15 November 2006 15:10 (nineteen years ago)

Thanks, Joe. I've got a couple of live versions of La Novia that I downloaded a couple of weeks ago but haven't checked out yet. I'll give it a go.

but i didn't even BUY this one! it was in my mailbox!!! I'm listening though. Sounds about right. is there a random AMT title generator? i can't remember. i'm down with a title like "Pussy Head Man From Outer Space", but "Crystal Rainbow Pyramid"? Come on, dudes...

hahaha, that would be a good premise for a short film. gnomes who leave acid mothers temple CDs in people's houses. NOT ANOTHER ONE! AHHHHHHHH!!!

scott seward, Saturday, 28 April 2007 21:44 (nineteen years ago)

Send your copies you don't want to me! I'll give it a good home!

Ned Raggett, Saturday, 28 April 2007 21:46 (nineteen years ago)

I think a certain record store employee should post what albums they bought today ;)

JW, Saturday, 28 April 2007 21:54 (nineteen years ago)

i had forgotten how much fun this thread was! ah, good times...

scott seward, Saturday, 28 April 2007 21:59 (nineteen years ago)

my ipod crashed, 2 weeks ago. i lost a little more than 40Gb's of music, including all of my AMT albums.

funny farm, Saturday, 28 April 2007 22:02 (nineteen years ago)

This is a tragedy, sir. And this is why it is always important to have backups.

i like this idea.

I initially read that as "my spacepod crashed, 2 weeks ago".

Matt #2, Sunday, 29 April 2007 08:01 (nineteen years ago)

one year passes...

I now have the following and enjoy them all greatly (and more or less equally):

• Electric Heavyland
• Just Another Band from the Cosmic Inferno
• Recurring Dream and Apocalypse of Darkness

What should i look out for next? Preferably in-print, easy (relatively speaking) to find and domestically (USA) released. But I can be flexible on that, if it's worth checking out something else in particular.

And of course I've read/skimmed the thread, I just wanted some direct recommendations.

stephen, Sunday, 3 August 2008 22:33 (seventeen years ago)

Nam Myo Ho Ren Ge Kyo and Crystal Rainbow Pyramid etc are great, they keep getting better as a band, but i could listen to him play guitar all day, so you might say there's too much stuff on all their records that's not a guitar solo.

people explosion, Monday, 4 August 2008 00:01 (seventeen years ago)

i sold all my amt CDs on ebay. and i traded in the new one about a month ago. now i own...zero.

scott seward, Monday, 4 August 2008 00:05 (seventeen years ago)

but scott! why!!>>?!?!

stephen, Monday, 4 August 2008 00:19 (seventeen years ago)

picking my jaw up off the floor now, dont mind me....

stephen, Monday, 4 August 2008 00:19 (seventeen years ago)

i don't really listen to CDs that much. and i needed money.

pretty much the only CDs i listen to are metal CDs that i get in the mail.

scott seward, Monday, 4 August 2008 01:02 (seventeen years ago)

do you still have AMT vinyl?

stephen, Monday, 4 August 2008 01:22 (seventeen years ago)

i could listen to him play guitar all day, so you might say there's too much stuff on all their records that's not a guitar solo.

wow. this is sort of exactly the opposite of how i feel about AMT. and it's why i pretty much stopped buying their stuff a few years back.

GOTT PUNCH II HAWKWINDZ, Monday, 4 August 2008 01:44 (seventeen years ago)

Was really into AMT circa 02/03. Bought a bunch stuff: Absolutely Freak Out, 41st century Splendid Man, In C, New Geocentric Worlds, Pataphysical Freak Out Mu and Electric Heavyland, as well as the 3 Magical Power CDEPs, all in the space of about 18 months. Saw them a couple times, too. Phenomenal live -- varied, virtuosic, clear (rather than "blown out"), and one of the most psychedelic experiences I've had undrugged. But the records, even the best of them, only half worked for me. Sometimes I'd enjoy them, but more often they'd bore me. Eventually, like Scott, I moved on and sold/traded nearly everything. Kept and still listen to the Mainliner LP every once in a while, though I prefer High Rise.

IMO, though they've got a great sound, they don't do enough with it (in the studio, at least) to justify the endless torrent of STUFF they put out. They're not a band who write songs or even compose albums -- instead, they're a band who do this (insert furious jamming noise). And it's not enough. Les Rallizes Denudes did it much, much better, and they at least had the good sense to make themselves scarce.

As a curiousity, AMT are cool enough to warrant some investigation, especially if you're into endless psyche jamz. But unlike, say, Zappa, The Fall or Pollard/GBV (who also seemed to release everything they ever recorded), dealing with AMT can't be reduced to cherry picking the "good stuff". Some moments are definitely more appealing than others, but there isn't a big difference between the wheat and the chaff. As a result, you're stuck with this massive, unweildy totality, and it's admirable in some sense, but it's also not quite worth the price of admission, in $$$ or in time. Still fantastic live, though.

contenderizer, Tuesday, 5 August 2008 16:58 (seventeen years ago)

Saw AMT and the Cosmic Inferno tonight. Their merch stand was enormous.

MacDara, Wednesday, 6 August 2008 23:37 (seventeen years ago)

I nearly bought the new one the other day on vinyl, but it was $50!

wilter, Wednesday, 6 August 2008 23:41 (seventeen years ago)

Contenderizer exactly articulates my thoughts there.

NickB, Thursday, 7 August 2008 13:57 (seventeen years ago)

Enjoyed them, like I always do, when I saw them on Sunday. Didn't feel inclined to take any merch home with me.

If I was gonna buy a chunk of their stuff it would be the ones with a lot of doomy/proto-metal riffs, which is my favourite AMT mode

DJ Mencap, Thursday, 7 August 2008 14:02 (seventeen years ago)

none of you are religious are you?

i think you would all like the Crystal Rainbow Pyramid album anyway, it's way together and kind of kraut-groovy and way mind-bendy.

people explosion, Thursday, 7 August 2008 14:08 (seventeen years ago)

Contenderizer exactly articulates my thoughts there.

^^^^^ yes

stephen, Saturday, 9 August 2008 15:36 (seventeen years ago)

xpost OTM about Crystal Rainbow Pyramid, just picked that one up this week and it's nice & groovy (for an AMT record at least, hah!)
