The Breeders - Classic or Dud?

Kim Deal went from indie-rock goddess to fondly-remembered historical figure pretty quickly. I don't recall Title TK causing all that much buzz. But I dusted off Last Splash the other day and it sounded pretty good and all. What say you?

My name is Kenny (My name is Kenny), Saturday, 12 July 2003 23:44 (twenty-two years ago)

Oh, yeah, Title TK. Ha. Forgot all about that thing.

Famous Athlete, Saturday, 12 July 2003 23:48 (twenty-two years ago)

Good shite. That Amps album is excellent too.

ham on rye (ham on rye), Saturday, 12 July 2003 23:51 (twenty-two years ago)

Good pop music. I'd call it "ace" but I'm not that much of a jackass.

David Allen, Saturday, 12 July 2003 23:55 (twenty-two years ago)

Classic. Kim Deal causes reactions in me that Justin Timberlake causes in my NSync-addicted younger cousin. I'd hump her leg on principle alone.

Jeanne Fury (Jeanne Fury), Saturday, 12 July 2003 23:59 (twenty-two years ago)

Classic. Jeanne Fury is OTM re: humping. My loins tingle with excitement about the prospect of Kim Deal's knee being presented.

Xii (Xii), Sunday, 13 July 2003 00:26 (twenty-two years ago)

Classic, its all about Josephine wiggs.

Matt (Matt), Sunday, 13 July 2003 00:31 (twenty-two years ago)

Classic; made a world of difference in my teenage life and it still holds up today.

teeny (teeny), Sunday, 13 July 2003 00:38 (twenty-two years ago)

Title TK was a bit overlooked, Last Splash has stood up pretty well and Pod fucking rocks and will do in 200 years time.

Lynskey (Lynskey), Sunday, 13 July 2003 00:39 (twenty-two years ago)

Amps were kinda not-so-good, Title TK is better than one would have expected altho it's no classic by any stretch. I'm too familiar (in a contempt sort of way) with Last Splash to objectively rate it.

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Sunday, 13 July 2003 00:53 (twenty-two years ago)

also Title TK one of Albini's shittiest sound jobs

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Sunday, 13 July 2003 00:53 (twenty-two years ago)

"recorded all wave" yeah big deal, Deal

electric sound of jim (electricsound), Sunday, 13 July 2003 00:53 (twenty-two years ago)

Is Kim Deal only hot because she plays an instrument and has a great voice? Let's face it...without those two things, she looks like a long-haul truck driver.

Breeders = Classic up to (and, on the right day, including) Title TK.

Andrew Frye (paul cox), Sunday, 13 July 2003 02:23 (twenty-two years ago)

there is no hope for some people.

di smith (lucylurex), Sunday, 13 July 2003 02:40 (twenty-two years ago)

my apologies andrew, i'm sure you have *really* sophisticated taste in women.

di smith (lucylurex), Sunday, 13 July 2003 02:45 (twenty-two years ago)

pod was genius, been pretty hopeless since.

keith (keithmcl), Sunday, 13 July 2003 02:49 (twenty-two years ago)

Kim Deal rocks the femme rocker casbah.

The Breeders = major, major classic. Many of my fondest adolescent memories were soundtracked by The Breeders' music. Plus, Kim Deal has the most brilliant sense of humor. I saw her on the cable access program "The Hondo Show" recreating a scene out of Showgirls with one of her Amps bandmates and the host of the program. The fact that I can still remember this about four years after I saw it first is a testament to how memorable the scene was/is.

And Title TK needed to be in the Top 40, damn it.

Innocent Dreamer (Dee the Lurker), Sunday, 13 July 2003 03:19 (twenty-two years ago)

"Cannonball" was probably the best most unexpected single to come out of thee grunge years (closest thing I can think of = the Slits' "I Heard In Through The Grapevine").

Ess Kay (esskay), Sunday, 13 July 2003 03:21 (twenty-two years ago)

I like the Breeders. Reminds me of my care-free 9th-grade days when I hung out mainly with 5 chicks who were all 3 to 6 years older than me and would buy smokes and booze for me. Also, Whipsmart by Liz Phair, did a lot of listening to that back then. A year later I met the Funkey Monkey Records/Helltime Productions guys (Mike Siciliano and Frank Fornsaglio, now in Pittsburgh rock band Stilyagi), started a band with them, alienated any female persons that I knew by adopting their Lee Vingesque anti-PC/anti-everything approach and had the best time of my life by discarding and demoralizing anything anyone I knew ever held of any importance besides the rock and the roll. Now I'm a lame married guy. Ha.

Helltime Producto (Pavlik), Sunday, 13 July 2003 03:38 (twenty-two years ago)

Pod, along with most of Last Splash, is stone cold classic WITHOUT QUESTION, MONSIEUR! And a girl I used to date made out with Kelly Deal in front of me. This of course meaning I've tasted Kelly...OH YEAAAAA!!! *does quirky dance*

Francis Watlington (Francis Watlington), Sunday, 13 July 2003 03:40 (twenty-two years ago)

KNOWWHARRAMASAYIN'?

Francis Watlington (Francis Watlington), Sunday, 13 July 2003 03:44 (twenty-two years ago)

She does look like a truck driver, in the best possible way. 'Title TK' is great, just no big major blah THING. And good for it. And they were great live. AND their bassplayer's called Mondo (by Kelley, anyway)

Andrew Thames (Andrew Thames), Sunday, 13 July 2003 12:07 (twenty-two years ago)

I enjoyed Title TK a hell of a lot. And not simply because the opening track is called "Little Fury." ;) I think people were too damn eager to write it off. There are some great great songs on that album, "Huffer" in particular.

Jeanne Fury (Jeanne Fury), Sunday, 13 July 2003 12:21 (twenty-two years ago)

I like the production/recording a lot, too, though it took a while to get into it.

Andrew Thames (Andrew Thames), Sunday, 13 July 2003 12:26 (twenty-two years ago)

Classic, its all about Josephine wiggs.
Apropos of nothing really...but have you ever seen Josephine Wiggs and Robert Smith at the same place at the same time?
Neither Have I.
Look at the photos below. Make up your own mind if something suspicious is going on or not.

Lord Custos Epsilon (Lord Custos Epsilon), Sunday, 13 July 2003 19:39 (twenty-two years ago)

Yes: Robert Smith is really Josephine Wiggs with her hair messed up.
< /THREAD HIJACK >

Lord Custos Epsilon (Lord Custos Epsilon), Sunday, 13 July 2003 19:40 (twenty-two years ago)

classic. Title TK is nowhere as good on a pop level, but Steve Albini's work makes Deal's voice truly astonishing. It's like a documentary that's so fascinating you're indifferent to its value as a work of art. I think there's filler on everything she's done, but they're all rewarding albums. Kelley Deal's solo stuff has some similar appeal.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Sunday, 13 July 2003 20:00 (twenty-two years ago)

i think title tk was overlooked by most. it's not a classic as pod, but it stands out as a great rock album.

lord custos, are you on crack?

joan vich (joan vich), Monday, 14 July 2003 09:26 (twenty-two years ago)

am I the only one who likes them more than the Pixies?

Justyn Dillingham (Justyn Dillingham), Monday, 14 July 2003 10:08 (twenty-two years ago)

Is it because you like girls more than boys?

Andrew Thames (Andrew Thames), Monday, 14 July 2003 10:19 (twenty-two years ago)

I mean I can't really seperate them, even after 15 or however many years it is. It's probably a great pity Kim's role in the Pixies was limited to bass/very occasional writing/fantastic (never sucky) backup singing.

Andrew Thames (Andrew Thames), Monday, 14 July 2003 10:32 (twenty-two years ago)

CLASSIC.
title tk was a bit eh.
POD is so classic, i want cut off my arms and waive them around until the windows are pink.
kelly is uber sweet- buy her a beer & get her talking about efx/pedals/guitars.

kephm, Monday, 14 July 2003 13:59 (twenty-two years ago)

Based on the show Chris Barrus and I caught a couple of months back, they very much still have it, so long may they rock, etc.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 14 July 2003 14:00 (twenty-two years ago)

Pod - brilliance.

Last Splash - my CD's been played so much it's gone all quiet and muffled and basically fucked (I didn't even know this was possible but...there you go), loveit loveit loveit even though "Cannonball" was for years the most overplayed indie club tune EVAH and - for shame - ended up immediately preceding my departure from whichever club on the grounds that "if the DJ's still playing that...sheesh" etc.

Title TK stands up well with the above, agreed, but I've perhaps not given it the exhaustive attention it deserves. Hmmm.

Anyway. Breeders=brilliant, Jo Wiggs was always my favourite but now she's disappeared (anyone remember Honey Tongue? Aces). Is she related to Pete?

CharlieNo4 (Charlie), Monday, 14 July 2003 14:10 (twenty-two years ago)

What exactly is classic about Pod? It's a decent album and all, but it sounds really quite slight to me. I just can't imagine loving it.

Title TK is pretty good as well. But Last Splash fucking rocked like a monster when I was in middle school and still does so when I listen to it now. I listen to it a lot now.

Tom Breihan (Tom Breihan), Monday, 14 July 2003 14:12 (twenty-two years ago)

But Last Splash fucking rocked like a monster when I was in middle school

Good God I am old.

Dan Perry (Dan Perry), Monday, 14 July 2003 14:17 (twenty-two years ago)

I'll get yer Metamucil. We can be like those two old guys in I'm Not Rappaport.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 14 July 2003 14:22 (twenty-two years ago)

Pod was better.

Alex in NYC (vassifer), Monday, 14 July 2003 14:39 (twenty-two years ago)

POD is so classic, i want cut off my arms and waive them around until the windows are pink.

How exactly are you going to wave them if they're already cut off?

My name is Kenny (My name is Kenny), Monday, 14 July 2003 17:22 (twenty-two years ago)

Based on the show Chris Barrus and I caught a couple of months back, they very much still have it, so long may they rock, etc.

I'll bet Ned started crying and gnashing his teeth when they played the theme to Buffy though!

Lars (Nicole), Monday, 14 July 2003 17:46 (twenty-two years ago)

The hell?

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 14 July 2003 17:51 (twenty-two years ago)

SH*t you're kidding right?

KING KONG, Monday, 14 July 2003 18:16 (twenty-two years ago)

what about the amps? everybody slogs the amps! pod is great.
last splash is a perfect summreday soundtrack. i went right out and bought title tk, some tree and a six pack on a hot summers afternoon in brooklyn and sweated thru the damn disk. geeze. what a fucking drag. it took ten years to sound like this? npr is more fun. the next day i went up to the little record shop in parkslope and traded it in for a used copy of last splash and three bucks- got a quart of beer and sat on the fire escape and relived the splendid sunshine of the summer that it came out.
ten damn years ago when i lived in the country and things were so much simpler....

kelly denison-cole (dustjacket), Monday, 14 July 2003 18:18 (twenty-two years ago)

Well, I think I know what your problem might be. Them ol' pair of ears need some quick replacing, gramps! :)

-- Francis Watlington (peppermintsmok...), July 14th, 2003.

No! Dude! I get to make fun of you for being old! That's how it works! Nobody gets to make fun of me for being young! Don't make me fuck you up with my Nerf dart gun!

Tom Breihan (Tom Breihan), Monday, 14 July 2003 18:27 (twenty-two years ago)

The hell?

They've been playing it at most of their recent live shows, I wasn't saying it for the sake of being random.

Lars (Nicole), Monday, 14 July 2003 18:32 (twenty-two years ago)

pod- great
safari - great
last splash - great & personal-top-five-easy
amps - great
title tk - eh
breeders singles - great, esp josephine singing, like "lord of the thighs" & "900"
j wiggs experience - great and criminally overlooked
dusty trails - great except for emmylou harris song
kelley deal 6000 - need to reinvestigate, not positive memories

(and yes i like the breeders way more than the pixies)

(btw the amg is a little messed up for kelley deal. boom boom boom doesn't show up under 'kelley deal 6000' but does under 'kelley deal')

ron (ron), Monday, 14 July 2003 18:51 (twenty-two years ago)

They've been playing it at most of their recent live shows, I wasn't saying it for the sake of being random.

I remember a cover of "The Angry Inch" from Hedwig, which is far cooler on several levels. Or so I deem.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 14 July 2003 19:29 (twenty-two years ago)

They also made a cameo appearance on Buffy too. They played @ The Bronze in that episode about that kid w/the magic letterman jacket.

Charles McCain (Charles McCain), Monday, 14 July 2003 19:38 (twenty-two years ago)

The Amps album is funny in that I hardly remember too many tracks, but I'm more likely to listen to multiple times in a row than most albums I own.

Anthony Miccio (Anthony Miccio), Monday, 14 July 2003 21:07 (twenty-two years ago)

I declare the Buffy theme far cooler! Buffy episodes have endings, I LOVE endings. And they played it down here, it was a great great moment

Andrew Thames (Andrew Thames), Tuesday, 15 July 2003 01:38 (twenty-two years ago)

What's this about the Pixies reforming? Thought I saw something on Pitchfork ...

brian nemtusak (sanlazaro), Tuesday, 15 July 2003 01:59 (twenty-two years ago)

someone told me about it last weekend, yes.
i don't think it would be a good idea. keep the beautiful corpse intact etc.

Classic

Fortunately Gone

christoff (christoff), Tuesday, 15 July 2003 14:54 (twenty-two years ago)

Since I snarked on Kim in the Pixies reunion thread, I thought I'd pay penance here and say: small-c classic. I can't say they're one of the greats of rock 'n' roll, but every album Kim Deal has played on has had its share of ragged, quietly unassuming, but brilliant pop songs. Yes, that includes the Amps album (Those hoarse screams on "Tipp City"! Those not-quite-on-the-beat drums on "Hoverin"! "Dedicated", for crissake!!) and Title TK (ever listened to it back-to-back with Pod? No? I think you'd be pleasantly surprised if you did).

Not picking sides in the Breeders-Pixies fight— they're both solid bands.

Nick Mirov (nick), Wednesday, 16 July 2003 06:29 (twenty-two years ago)

am I the only one who likes them more than the Pixies?

No you're not.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 27 October 2006 19:49 (nineteen years ago)

I usually think the Breeders are overrated. But if someone were to put on an album of them right now I think I'd probably smile and be pleased as punch.

I don't know of that live album at all.

An evening of fun in the metropolis of your dream (Bimble...), Saturday, 28 October 2006 02:07 (nineteen years ago)

i miss kim deal.

the orchid and the wasp (Jody Beth Rosen), Saturday, 28 October 2006 02:15 (nineteen years ago)

Yeah! WTF? She was the one who wrote that amazing song the Pixies came back with. What was it called? The really amazing one...won't come to me now. Keep thinking about spiders lately. It's very distracting.

An evening of fun in the metropolis of your dream (Bimble...), Saturday, 28 October 2006 02:20 (nineteen years ago)

I saw a movie called Spider Baby that had this girl in it acting like a spider and killing people with large scissors while pretending to be a spider. It was from the late 60's. Very cool. Also Robyn Hitchcock's album is called Ole Tarantula and the girl in the movie had about three pet tarantulas she kept hidden from people.

So anyway the Pixies song was called...fuck where is that CD? Give me a minute here.

An evening of fun in the metropolis of your dream (Bimble...), Saturday, 28 October 2006 02:22 (nineteen years ago)

BAM THWOK. That was the name of it.

Sorry, this is a Breeders thread. And I am drunk.

An evening of fun in the metropolis of your dream (Bimble...), Saturday, 28 October 2006 02:25 (nineteen years ago)

for me:

Breeders > Pixies

not that I don't like the latter, but songs like "Do You Love Me Now?" and "DOE" kind of, well, SHALL WE SAY, TROMP LE MONDE?? harhahr

poortheatre (poortheatre), Saturday, 28 October 2006 06:53 (nineteen years ago)

Throwing Muses > Pixies

for me (not that I... blah blah..)

What exactly is classic about Pod?

I'd like to know too! Seems pretty unanimously like a record I should get round to hearing one day.

ennui (fandango), Saturday, 28 October 2006 08:59 (nineteen years ago)

also Title TK one of Albini's shittiest sound jobs

Couldn't disagree more - the songs on Title TK are fairly uninspired but what saves it is the gloriously raw-but-rich sound (the non-Albini tracks are very flat by comparison).

Michael Jones (MichaelJ), Saturday, 28 October 2006 15:29 (nineteen years ago)

The Safari EP is one of my favorite EPs evah. Last Splash needs editing. Haven't heard the other two.

Orgy of Pragmatism (Charles McCain), Saturday, 28 October 2006 15:33 (nineteen years ago)

Kim Deal's voice (and i guess Kelly's too) is grand.
i love her so much...and her gtr playing's alright, too!

Man, I bought the 7", and it's pressed really shittily - the center hole is too small to fit over the spindle on my turntable! I tried to force it down but the belt wouldn't move. I'm not sure what to do - definitely a drag.

HELL YES

Do they produce all their own stuff? I always love the sounds they get. They seem to never have a producer mess w anything on their albums, it always sounds like it was EXACTLY what they wanted to do. Love them forever for it!

Emperor Cos Dashit (Adam Bruneau), Thursday, 20 March 2014 23:30 (twelve years ago)

Albini is their most common producer, but they've worked with various others. Kim co-produced Last Splash.

Charles, hatless (sic), Friday, 21 March 2014 00:23 (twelve years ago)

Cool, I guess I always loved Albini's minimalist recording style. The new stuff sounds like it could have been recorded in the 90s! That's a good thing!

Holy shit!! Those B-sides!!:

"Wait In the Car" will be released on three different seven-inch records, all limited to 1,500 copies. The first will be available on the Breeders' upcoming tour dates, starting October 15th. That record will be pressed on orange vinyl and feature a cover of Amon Düül II's "Archangel's Thunderbird," recorded with Steve Albini in Chicago. The second seven-inch will be available at select independent record stores starting October 27th. Pressed on yellow vinyl, that version will feature a cover of Devo's "Gates of Steel" on the B side. A release date for the third seven-inch has yet to be announced, though it's expected to arrive later this year, will be pressed on red vinyl and feature Deal's cover of Michael Nesmith's "Joanne."

Uh, yes please:

Today, the Breeders announce details of their long-awaited fifth album. Entitled All Nerve, and featuring recent single ‘Wait in the Car’, the group’s first record in a decade will be released on March 2, 2018. All Nerve’s title track is now available to hear below.

‘ALL NERVE’ - http://bit.ly/2CViqyq

All Nerve reunites band members Kim and Kelley Deal, Josephine Wiggs and Jim Macpherson – the line-up behind the iconic and platinum-selling record, Last Splash. The quartet returned to the stage in 2013 to celebrate the album’s 20th anniversary and have been quietly working on new material since then. Recording took place at Candyland, Dayton, Kentucky, with Mike Montgomery; Electrical Audio, Chicago, with Steve Albini and Greg Norman; and with Tom Rastikis at Fernwood Studios, Dayton, Ohio. Artwork was conceived by Chris Bigg, who has worked with the Breeders since their first album, Pod.

All Nerve will be released on March 2nd on CD, standard edition black vinyl LP, limited alternate sleeve/orange vinyl (independent stores only) and digitally. 4AD Store customers also have the opportunity to bundle their LP album pre-order with the third iteration in the ‘Wait in the Car’ 7” single series, while stocks last. This limited red vinyl single features a cover of Mike Nesmith’s ‘Joanne’. For more information head to 4ad.com/store

To coincide with All Nerve and following a successful club tour late last year, the Breeders will tour North America and Europe throughout the Spring and Summer. Tickets go on sale this Friday. Visit thebreedersmusic.com for further details.

Those Kim Deal 7" singles from 2014 are great and make a nice album of sorts (incl. "Walking With a Killer"). I bought 3-4 of the vinyl releases but you can get the whole lot from iTunes I think, and Amazon if you don't want DRM. No lossless anywhere I could find though.
"Biker Gone" with Kim, Kelley and Britt Walford is effectively a Breeders song (and superb) -

the thing about pod vs. last splash is that they're both perfect

mellon collie and the infinite bradness (BradNelson), Friday, 29 May 2020 14:16 (six years ago)

albini's method of recording very tight bands in a straight up way that emphasized dynamics which would somehow make them sound more mysterious and strange = still classic i think, despite the uneven mastering (or at least i think that must be why "happiness" is 30x louder than the rest of the record)

mellon collie and the infinite bradness (BradNelson), Friday, 29 May 2020 14:25 (six years ago)

yeah I think there is something a little off about the mastering of Pod, at least on the CD version, would be interesting to hear that album on vinyl and see if it's any different. I think the Albini recording works otherwise

just had a quick look on slsk and found some FLACs purporting to be ripped from the original LP so will see

Colonel Poo, Friday, 29 May 2020 14:37 (six years ago)

I listened to the vinyl rip of Pod earlier, Happiness Is A Warm Gun was still a little louder than the tracks around it but it sounded great although I don't think it was significantly different to the CD, not that I A/B'd it or anything. It did seem to be actually a vinyl rip, there were a couple of tiny pops during Metal Man which has a lot of quiet parts.

It is a great album and it took me back to my teens when I bought it and I could picture my bedroom at my mum's house

Thanks Ned. A couple paragraphs in, already an error:

Macpherson, who joined after 1990s “Pod,” pounded his Gretsch kit like an Ohio schoolboy raised on Rush.

Jim didn't join until 1993, he replaced Jim Mattock (of Spacemen 3 and Josephine's band Perfect Disaster) who drummed on the Safari EP.

sorry, but this really is picking nits. the error in Steve Shasta's rewrite would be worse if published than the original sentence, which is not inaccurate and just fairly common shorthand when writing for a mass audience. (i agree, however, that Steve's rewrite is better w/o the year error.)

alpine static, Saturday, 16 September 2023 19:08 (two years ago)

my brain goes aahhhh (morrisp), Saturday, 16 September 2023 19:12 (two years ago)

The thing which irks me is my favourite album Title TK (few would agree with me that it's their best) is half a footnote, as if the Lopez/Medelez incarnation of the band was somehow invalid despite putting out as many records as the Wiggs/Macpherson lineup.
(it's Jon Mattock btw)

The Triumphant Return of Bernard & Stubbs (Raymond Cummings), Monday, 18 September 2023 01:11 (two years ago)

I'm excited about the Kim solo album. I hope there's a bunch of new stuff and not just rerecordings of the solo singles. Although that would be good too. I just need more Kim. Sometimes I fantasize about moving to Dayton and volunteering to be her personal assistant just so she has more time to make music. "Don't worry Kim, I'll mow the lawn!"

Cow_Art, Monday, 18 September 2023 01:18 (two years ago)

My Kim Deal fantasies have changed a lot since high school.

Cow_Art, Monday, 18 September 2023 01:18 (two years ago)

I think "London Song" is my favourite Deal song of all time. The weirdness of her structures and phrasing, particularly on that album, are absolutely unique and so overlooked - maybe my number one, definitely my top 3 songwriters of all time.
Also the rhythm section are absolutely key to TK's wonky precision, it all sounds so loose but it's actually screwed down tight and perfectly locked in.

assert (matttkkkk), Monday, 18 September 2023 01:31 (two years ago)

These days I'm very favorable to loose nature of "Mountain Battles" - it comes off as the Deals having fun.

Western® with Bacon Flavor, Monday, 18 September 2023 06:26 (two years ago)

I really dig “Divine Mascis” but this is at the top of my list of why I dislike the video/visualizer school of track rollouts - for me, the images color or affect how I receive the music in ways that feel kinda gross.

Anybody: if you see the Breeders on this tour can you get me a copy of the newest issue of Breeders Digest, only sold at their shows? They’re not playing near me and I have all the other issues and it must be mine.

Cow_Art, Friday, 22 September 2023 01:20 (two years ago)

I will of course pay you back and I can give you extra money for your troubles or send you some cool shit in the mail.

Cow_Art, Friday, 22 September 2023 01:35 (two years ago)

I will try! Seeing them 10/19

Sweet! My more or less complete Breeders Collection is counting on you. I promise I will make it worth your while.

Cow_Art, Friday, 22 September 2023 01:41 (two years ago)

Just saw the show in DC area at Fillmore Silver Spring. They were having fun and sounded strong.

The slick feeling zine comes with a Breeders heart pin and a sticker for $15! Entertaining but the zine is a bit skimpy

curmudgeon, Friday, 22 September 2023 05:19 (two years ago)

Digest #2 came with a pin that I lost long ago, to my eternal regret.

Cow_Art, Friday, 22 September 2023 10:14 (two years ago)

I didn’t see your reference to the zine till after I got home from the show . My wife brought it back to me at the show when she went to look at the merch and I was just at our seats

curmudgeon, Friday, 22 September 2023 14:36 (two years ago)

No worries. The first Breeders Digest came with a live CD and the second one came with a 7" that had a couple of demos of unreleased songs. The actual content of the digest was thin but still fun.

Cow_Art, Friday, 22 September 2023 14:49 (two years ago)

oh right, that's where Live In Stockholm was first released. With No Aloha on it, by the way, which they dropped from CD3 of Last Splash LSXX

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Last_Splash#LSXX_track_listing <- No "No Aloha" in Stockholm here

“Divine Mascis” is great, J should have joined the Breeders.

His “Do You Love Me Now?” is pretty great.

It like that they get a schlubby nonsinger to replace the Deals vocals.

Cow_Art, I’m really sorry… by the time I got to the front of the merch line, they were sold out of the zine. :(

Awwwwww, man! Thanks for trying! There's always Ebay.

Cow_Art, Friday, 20 October 2023 09:10 (two years ago)

Once upon a time Kelley Deal may have been the weakest link at some point (30 years ago?) but holy shit she's in top form (aside from a couple flubs on "Flipside"). Absolutely killed it, she's got some big shoes to fill (her sister's, Tanya's, Joey Santiago's) and she is beyond capable. How could you not love this band!

None on Ebay yet. It's a little tricky because there's actually a couple of Breeders Digest publications, one about dogs and another for guinea pigs.

copy of zine obtained. can send to you after I read it lol

Some show notes

Kim mentioned they recorded Last Splash in San Francisco but neglected to mention that the studio* was a block and a half away from The Warfield on Mission & 6th.

Ironically because of the shitshow of Market St construction, my exit for the venue was exactly right in front of the building the studio formerly occupied.

*I think she called it Coast Recorders but it was actually Brilliant Studios.

Also when covering "Drivin' On 9" there was no shoutout to Dom Leone who wrote the song and lived in SF most of the 90s/00s.

I'd never seen Jim play so many Pod songs at once so it was interesting to compare his style with Britt's.

Had no idea Jo and Jim switched instruments for "Roi"... the psychedelic midsection of which was incredibly trippy.

Had no idea "I Just Wanna Get Along" was Kelley's song.

Reiterating Kelley can absolutely shred with the best of them. She was surprisingly stellar on the material when she wasn't in the band!

They replaced Carrie Bradley with someone named Sophie Galpin who had a Mancunian lilt but she could play 3rd guitar and violin very well.

Rhoda Morgenstern stan account (morrisp), Tuesday, 24 October 2023 20:30 (two years ago)

this seems to come as a surprise to many people, sadly. The original is definitely superior, the Breeders version excises several key lines and verses, which undercuts and obscures the narrative that makes the song work imo.

Worth mentioning that violinist Carrie Bradley in above video of ERQ playing in Oakland was originally a member of (pre-Pod) The Breeders and then again sporadically throughout the 90s.

i tried looking for a thread, but Ed's Redeeming Qualities is great. Breeders could've made a new American songbook digging through their works.

Cow_Art check yr webmail, you should be receiving the zine soon if you haven't already

All the post Last Splash catalog is great but I love love love Title TK

chr1sb3singer, Wednesday, 1 November 2023 15:58 (two years ago)

The only bummer about the classic lineup getting back together is that it makes Title TK and Mountain Battles seem lesser, which is not the case.

I got the zine!!! Thanks a million! How do I check my webmail?

Cow_Art, Wednesday, 1 November 2023 16:05 (two years ago)

Title TK was a revelation. Ive gone back to it several times. Love the nonsense lyrics and meaty sound. Listening to Mountain Battles after it made me realize that Kim Deal will make a cool sounding song out of basically anything.

Has anyone seen the iguana???

xpost Kim has a real knack for surreal turns of phrase. I think about the line "I need spit/to crush these beetles on my lips" from "Skinhead#2" on All Nerve all the time

If that’s the case, I have no emails pertaining to the Breeders Digest.

But I have an address and I know how much it cost, so I think we’re good.

― hat trick of trashiness (Alfred, Lord Sotosyn), Wednesday, 1 November 2023 17:00 (yesterday) link

It's funny that with the In Utero anniversary and the attendant discourse all the stuff about how them wanting to work with Albini becuz of Sufer Rosa, which I am not discounting, but I haven't seen any mention of Pod which at the time seemed, and listening to both records recently, to be a pretty obv sonic template, I mean "Happiness is a Warm Gun" sounds exactly like something on In Utero

Every time I listen to the Amps record I think "oh I don't really remember this record" and the second it starts I realize I have it memorized

chr1sb3singer, Thursday, 2 November 2023 13:13 (two years ago)

first song on the Amps record has been one of my go-to random out-of-nowhere just-start-singing-out-of-thin-air melodies for 30 years

"now i'd liiiike to get back..."

alpine static, Thursday, 2 November 2023 15:13 (two years ago)

In "Tipp City" I thought I was mishearing this but she really does sing "I have relations with anonymous internet nation", which feels both of the times and truly prophetic

New solo single from Kim!

So good, feelin' a little Blondie ("Sunday Girl") in the verses.

Mrs. Ippei (Steve Shasta), Monday, 15 July 2024 17:14 (one year ago)

I’m at work, it’s killing me that I can’t hear this now. Kim is the best.

Cow_Art, Monday, 15 July 2024 17:17 (one year ago)

wonder if there's any chance this means a solo album is coming?

alpine static, Monday, 15 July 2024 17:27 (one year ago)

from reddit:

Around March of last year, Kim delivered a solo album to 4AD

Many presumed it would be a collection of all of her solo singles, as well as the unreleased single 'Nobody Loves You More'

However, recently Kyle Rector (long time friend of the band, who runs their social media and merch store) shared that the album will consist of entirely new songs, aside from two songs from the solo series, which have been re-recorded.

It's sounding like the album will come out this year, exciting stuff!

Edit:

A new song called "Coast" was released today (June 15)!

Some info taken from 4AD's website:

‘Coast’ was written in 2020 after being at her friend Mike Montgomery’s wedding when the house band, The Grape Whizzers, jammed Jimmy Buffett’s 1977 ‘Margaritaville’ with “revelatory levels of low self-esteem.” But the song’s roots reach back as far as 2000, when Kim was staying on the Massachusetts island of Nantucket. An unlikely retreat for the Ohio native (“I hate the sun, beach and watersports,”), she spent a rough off-season where young workers “check the WAM” for surfing conditions.

‘Coast’ was recorded by Steve Albini at his Electrical Audio studio in Chicago. Lindsay Glover and Breeders alum Mando Lopez are the song’s rhythm section, Kim’s sister Kelley plays guitar and horns are by Chicago marching band Mucca Pazza.

The two solo songs that have been recorded are rumoured to be Are You Mine and Wish I Was. The new song "Disobedience" played at the recent Breeders shows is also rumoured to be on the album.

Mrs. Ippei (Steve Shasta), Monday, 15 July 2024 17:36 (one year ago)

Glad to hear that “Are You Mine” will get a wider airing. That’s a Top 10 Ever KD tune.

Marten Broadcloak, mild-mannered GOP congressman (Raymond Cummings), Monday, 15 July 2024 19:06 (one year ago)

yeah, that one is incredible — not sure how she'll top the original recording!

new song sounds very nice.

tylerw, Monday, 15 July 2024 19:12 (one year ago)

Oh man, this is pretty nice. The song feels slight but the sound of it is so warm and direct, it's a good change for her. Kim's voice is so lovely, it's fun to see it in a different setting.

Is this the first time Kim has had horns on a song? It's definitely got me stoked for the album.
