Oh man, this song is so fucking awesome!!! It's like "The Immigrant Song" except, uh, I almost said better but I caught myself. Amon Duul II is the most metal name ever: it's got TWO umlauts (sp?) AND Roman numerals, which more metal bands should have btw. Also, I can never remember how to make umlauts.

Yeah, wow, thanks to Steve Hise for making me pull out Phallus Dei again. can sorta hear a little Yessong in "Luzifers", but what's really hitting me is just what a monster bass player Dave Anderson was. (the Yessynch that recently blew my mind was the Levene's "Poptones" Howe's "Starship Trooper" that I read somewhere around here recently. was that Sinker on some old thread? sounds like him. or maybe it was actually on someone's blog?)(ah wait, no, it was Marcello on that "Guardian" thread!) But yeah, Anderson really gave the whole swirling stew the kick in the pants it needed.

the vibraphone on this record is amazing too. They shoulda kept that guy around, Christian Borchard. the last couple minutes of the title track is some HEAVY shit, man. Best violin/vibes/bass/guitar doom coda ever.

Renate looks... odd in that pic above. In most pics I've seen of her she looks stunning. Her voice is great (grebt?). The beat on Archangels Thunderbird just stomps over everything.

about two years ago i was given a tape with this song on it, not knowing any other amon duul. for about the next year, wherever i would drive, this song would play on repeat almost non-stop. i almost kind of wish i had a cd player but i think waiting for it to finish rewinding made it even more enticing.

This 10 minute pilot (?) from 1998 for a show called "Archangel Thunderbird" popped up on YouTube. It's kind of rubbish and not old enough to be hauntological but a bit of a curio. Would be hugely improved if it had used the song as a soundtrack.
