Sault - What's the story?

Album is here - https://soundcloud.com/saultglobal/sets/sault-5

Just from the first track I can detect traces of ESG, The Jellies, The Dixie Cups & Holland–Dozier–Holland era Motown if it had been produced by Norman Whitfield. The production is timeless but state of the art at the same time. Ace songwriting.

My inner cynic reckons with the smart low key underground anti-marketing it is going to end up that Sault are some long time music business insiders, the album will eventually get a full release on say XL with a massive marketing push and it'll end up being thee essential album of 2020. Or not. But whatever, it doesn't detract from it being a great record.

I hate that the vinyl sold out like in a day and I was constantly checking if a release date was published. The whole willful obscurity of the project is frustrating but I guess it’s working. I heard Danger Mouse was involved but that might be fake.

Music wise I posted in the songs of summer 2019 thread that I absolutely love the combination of northern soul vocals + krautrock styled drums.

It's groovy, but I'm not really hearing the ace songwriting.

stirmonster, Monday, 16 September 2019 21:04 (four years ago) link

Xpost: Huh that’s weird last time I checked they were sold out! I guess they restocked, thank you for the heads up, already ordered.

✖✖✖ (Moka), Monday, 16 September 2019 21:07 (four years ago) link

People on discogs were selling them for twice or thrice the price which I thought was ridiculous as a second print was surely around the corner.

I see two sellers still have it for 50 pounds.

Oh I see there’s snippets of a new album called 7 on their instagram account and it also sounds great. Seriously who are behind this project? I can’t find anything on them only name I see attached is Dean Inflo Josiah which is also very obscure on info and... maybe an alias of another artist?

✖✖✖ (Moka), Monday, 16 September 2019 22:36 (four years ago) link

There is another name attached too - Cleopatra Nikolic.

She has written for Little Simz.

I'm not on Instagram so didn't know about '7'. Curioser and curioser.

stirmonster, Monday, 16 September 2019 22:41 (four years ago) link

Some of these new tracks sound very “Danger Mouse” I wouldn’t be surprised if he is in fact attached to this one. I see there’s a connection between this “Dean Inflo” mystery man and Danger Mouse on a Michael Kiwanuka album.

willem, Tuesday, 17 September 2019 08:39 (four years ago) link

It’s actually true! There’s another band called Sault who play metal. one of them might need to change their name eventually.

✖✖✖ (Moka), Tuesday, 17 September 2019 15:02 (four years ago) link

Never heard of them before this thread. Listened to a couple tracks so far - I like it but the ESG influence is PROMINENT. Also hearing Tom Tom Club as filtered though, I don’t know, something from the era of late 90s electronica’s-the-next-big-thing.

The song is the second single from Sault, a trio that features London-based musician Dean “Inflo” Josiah Cover (writer of DanDigs.com audio mainstays “Black Man in a White World” by Michael Kiwanuka, “House in LA” by Jungle, “Offence” by Little Simz, and many, many more). It’s released via Forever Living Originals, an independent label that counts Melisa Young among its cohort, better known as Chicago rapper Kid Sister (whose Kanye-featuring “Pro Nails” was a bonafide smash upon its release in 2011, as was the track’s magnificently massive Rusko remix).

I listened to and enjoyed the album but also thought that almost every song seemed geared for placement on a modern Southern Gothic HBO-type show. (N.B.: I am watching Sharp Objects at the moment which may have influenced this conclusion).

Haha I half wonder if they're just releasing individual discs from a huge boxset-sized debut album

7 is the one, I think (so far)--5 is pretty great debut for a 'sound' band--foregrounding those influences that seemingly nobody will ever tire of--but some of those songs on 7 really hit me deep in the soul

Both albums are amazingly consistent, hard to really choose one over the other. Huge low-end throughout. I feel wrong saying it, but this is what I wish ESG sounded like.

Mario Meatwagon (Moodles), Monday, 21 October 2019 23:12 (four years ago) link

My copy of the 2nd one should arrive tomorrow. I'm perfectly happy with how ESG sound already and wouldn't change anything about their sound, but if their more recent recordings had sounded more like this I'd probably play them more.

Mario Meatwagon (Moodles), Friday, 22 November 2019 19:37 (four years ago) link

octobeard, Saturday, 23 November 2019 02:03 (four years ago) link

Really enjoy the slight layer of polish distinguishing the second album from the first. Even more, I enjoy trying to figure out if it’s the songs as a whole or the brilliance of the rhythm section that’s the force of what’s captivating me.

file of unknown origin (bendy), Saturday, 23 November 2019 04:45 (four years ago) link

For me it’s the brilliance of the rhythm section. They are amazing. Apparently there’s a tour planned next year so I guess we’ll finally meet the people behind it.

✖✖✖ (Moka), Saturday, 23 November 2019 07:15 (four years ago) link

yes, all about the rhythm section for me. is anybody else's copy of the second album warped?

stirmonster, Saturday, 23 November 2019 16:54 (four years ago) link

Gradually, I'm growing to feel like this is ace songwriting, both wishing I could articulate why and knowing that I like it because I can't pin it down. It's Sly & Robbie, but it's also Sly and Robbie and Black Uhuru.

file of unknown origin (bendy), Sunday, 24 November 2019 13:52 (four years ago) link

The grooves carry them on tracks that are less fleshed out, but there's definitely some standout songwriting too. "Why Why Why Why Why", "Masterpiece", and "Friends" leap to mind as A+ writing.

Mario Meatwagon (Moodles), Sunday, 24 November 2019 14:03 (four years ago) link

Yes, the grooves are what drew me in to begin with but the songwriting is what elevates it into something very special. it will be very interesting to see how it works live.

I am using your worlds, Saturday, 14 December 2019 10:31 (four years ago) link

Jesus Christ these records are so utterly, completely everything I want/need in new music. Even things I love wholeheartedly, it's incredibly rare to hear something where just every decision feels so exactly right.

This has to be related to Little Simz, no?

The only connection I really hear to ESG (whom I adore) is that it's so perfectly minimalist--there's never more than like three or four sound sources. I hear some Library tendencies, some high sophistication a la Adrian Younge/Midnight Hour or Michael Kiwanaku but with so much more restraint. If there's an Afrobeat component it feels more like Lijadu Sisters than Fela... I mean, they definitely get the "who does this call back to" synapses firing, but ultimately I really don't care too much because it's just so perfectly timeless--never retro or overtly futurist, just. . . what it needs to be to do what it's trying to do.

Soundslike, Monday, 23 December 2019 05:32 (four years ago) link

If this is Danger Mouse related, it's by far the best thing he's ever been involved with. The restraint would seem uncharacteristic. . .

we're all voting for "up all night" as the song to represent sault at the 77 best tracks ILM 2019. i said it first that means you have to do it

budo jeru, Saturday, 4 January 2020 19:34 (four years ago) link

Kind of wish "Don't Waste My Time" was nominated, but don't want to further dilute the choices.

Fizzles, Saturday, 4 January 2020 20:11 (four years ago) link

I'll go with that just to get them seen/heard--but I don't think I could pick fewer than 10 favorites across the two albums.

I'm pretty firmly sold on '7' as the better of the two albums, though both are top-5 of the year for me...

Good taste, bit Victorian but who isn't? (jed_), Saturday, 4 January 2020 21:28 (four years ago) link

I can't figure getting one and not the other? They're hardly miles apart--tracks could be interchanged freely, other than '7' having a slightly more serious tone overall perhaps?

Soundslike, Saturday, 4 January 2020 21:45 (four years ago) link

you're probably right tbh.

Good taste, bit Victorian but who isn't? (jed_), Saturday, 4 January 2020 22:02 (four years ago) link

okay, there are songs on 5 that it sounds like had existed for many years but which I had only just heard (where has this been all my life?) whereas this one sounds more current and more like a straight RnB record at times (albeit a very good one). I was singing along with Up All Night, Why Why Why... and others after one listen (this is not always a good thing but is in this instance) but I struggle, so far, to have that connection on 7. 5 also sounds like a weird compilation of unheard tracks from various groups whereas 7 sounds like a record by a group (MAYBE) and that is not a negative, it just doesn't seem uncanny in the way 7 does.

Good taste, bit Victorian but who isn't? (jed_), Saturday, 4 January 2020 23:00 (four years ago) link

I also want to add how much I love Sault as a band/project name.

Good taste, bit Victorian but who isn't? (jed_), Saturday, 4 January 2020 23:08 (four years ago) link

Definitely voting both albums in the eoy poll and I’ll probably vote for all tracks nominated just to be sure.

I was assuming the “dancing in the rover” was a sample? I have both albums on vinyl and credits on it are practically non-existent. if there’s sampling going on in any of the albums it’s as mysterious as the people involved.

✖✖✖ (Moka), Saturday, 4 January 2020 23:33 (four years ago) link

idk what i was looking at, but this popped up in some "similar releases" on a discogs page and i was surprised at how different it sounded to what i was looking at (it was maybe on a fela or marvin gaye release? i honestly don't remember. i'm not completely sold on everything just yet, but there's definitely a weird and intriguing mishmash of stuff going on. like it's mildly putumayo-ish in spots, but without the sheen, and then the vocals are definitely soul-inspired. and yeah, definitely has a bit of esg vibes in spots. it's hard to place.

i like, not love, what i've heard so far. some of the melodies aren't that unique and the grainy / distorted vocals wear a bit thin after a while, but i'm definitely interested in seeing what happens.

Sounding so good. I wonder if this will be their breakout album? It's long, around 55 minutes so hope all the tracks make it on to vinyl.

Also, Gilles Peterson repeatedly mentions it being Inflo and Cleo.

stirmonster, Sunday, 14 June 2020 13:01 (three years ago) link

Mario Meatwagon (Moodles), Sunday, 14 June 2020 16:19 (three years ago) link

I wonder if Peterson went off-piste by repeatedly mentioning who was involved? Or didn't think it through. There's nothing in the social media presence to suggest that they were ready to change tack at this point.

Heavy Messages (jed_), Tuesday, 16 June 2020 14:20 (three years ago) link

I mean at this point it was pretty much confirmed Inflo and Cleo Sol were involved. There's several articles linked upthread which shared this same info. One article upthread describes them as a trio which includes Kid Sister as well. Inflo plays bass, drums and piano on Cleo Sol's albums so he might as well be behind the whole instrumentation.

✖✖✖ (Moka), Tuesday, 16 June 2020 17:30 (three years ago) link

Asides the love from 3 or 4 members of ilm I haven’t seen them being hyped virtually anywhere else.

Gorillavsbear released his “best of the year so far” list placing this album and “wildfires” as his respective best song and best album of the year so far and Gilles Peterson playing the full album is the closest I’ve seen to hype for them. They deserve every bit of hype in my opinion. If you add the Cleo Sol album they’ve been incredibly prolific in the past year. There’s enough in there for a best of compilation.

handsome boy modelling software (bernard snowy), Friday, 19 June 2020 12:25 (three years ago) link

Honestly, given at first nobody really knew who they were, they dud no press, and the label they're on exists so far just to put their music out, I feel like the degree to which they're loved is because of the music itself.

I know I've played them for lots of musician/producer friends and so far everyone has become a big fan. Their just doing something that *feels* immediately familiar (in a good way) but doesn't *really* sound like anything else (including ESG). I can fairly guarantee they're not being propped up in secret by some massive corporate advertising campaign...

I wouldn't let fear of hype cut you off from it. If they were the most popular group in the world, I'd love them no less...

Only bought the new one on vinyl, but I'm very tempted by '7' too...

Soundslike, Sunday, 21 June 2020 23:28 (three years ago) link

So I'm enjoying the new one, but not as much as the other two. I guess it comes down to how much you like a more thematic approach with lots of spoken word interludes. There's plenty of good moments on here, but the first two were more concise, more energetic, and had sharper songwriting.

Mario Meatwagon (Moodles), Monday, 22 June 2020 01:35 (three years ago) link

"Wildfires" is an incredible song

Roz, Monday, 22 June 2020 05:42 (three years ago) link

I've only heard the first and third records so far but the basslines on these are terrific. Everyone involved plays a blinder - but I've had a vague sense for a while that a lot of musicians have forgotten the extent to which a really great bassline can make a song fly rather than just slam and these records are absolutely full of them.

Matt DC, Monday, 22 June 2020 09:25 (three years ago) link

I agree with Moodles. The double album length on this one means there's too much fat I'd have trimmed compared to 5 and 7, I don't think I'll be listening as much to this one for this reason. It's harder to swallow in one listen, both by length and subject matter. If it was up to me I'd actually cut 8 or 10 of the tracks in here. Too many interludes and ideas that feel like they need more work and would have been better left as future sketches for a future album.

That said, there's plenty to like in here and 'Wildfires' might be a contender for song of the year for me and is one of the best songs they've released imho.

✖✖✖ (Moka), Monday, 22 June 2020 23:08 (three years ago) link

I just don't get that at all. I think that's a big part of what makes it great. Aside from the fact that many of the interludes would work fantastically in a mix, it actually makes it seem like a very good mix in itself.

i get why this is a double-album, and the interludes are good for some ambience and a few of them are really resonant. but it's a little frustrating that most/all of my favorite tracks show up on record #2 (incl. 'black,' 'eternal life,' 'monsters')

ACABincalifornia (voodoo chili), Wednesday, 1 July 2020 22:10 (three years ago) link

It looks like the Bandcamp page was updated with CD releases for all three albums - available for pre-order now, shipping July 20.

ernestp, Thursday, 2 July 2020 01:01 (three years ago) link

Damn, already have those all digitally (and have bought them several times for other folks), and splurged on the vinyl for 'Untitled'... But CD is the format I actually actively buy, so probably going to have to plunk down the $63 it's going to cost to get all three shipped to the US...

Soundslike, Thursday, 2 July 2020 23:12 (three years ago) link

Friend just tipped me to the new one, which then sent me back to the earlier albums. Great stuff all around. Have not yet delved into the Cleo Sol album, obviously I should. The new one sits comfortably alongside Moses Boyd's album, both on my best-of-year shortlist.

So I've now been bingeing all the Sault albums and the Cleo Sol album for two weeks, and this is a pretty great body of work to all be churned out in under a year. Seems weird that it's still a little under the radar.

All their albums have been virtually ignored by US media. In the UK only the Guardian and Q magazine picked it up. I don’t know how getting your album reviewed works, is sending a copy enough? Is there payola involved?

Do you need to represent a big label to be considered at all? They would have slayed in scores, their sounnd ticks too many critics-darlings boxes. I don’t see how any of their albums would get a score lower than B-.

I managed to get a serious metalhead excited about their new one.

Mario Meatwagon (Moodles), Tuesday, 21 July 2020 16:58 (three years ago) link

I don’t know how getting your album reviewed works

As far as I know (which isn't very far), you need some way to get editorial/writers to actually notice your email promo from the millions they receive. Maybe that's because they've already heard of you or something catches their eye, but more likely because it's coming from a PR or label person that they know and trust (or who sends promos for other notable artists, and who they want to keep having a good relationship with).

change display name (Jordan), Tuesday, 21 July 2020 17:25 (three years ago) link

As topical as it is, I think the new one would get a lot more attention in the States if it was by an American artist.

But some kind of breakthrough feels sort of inevitable. They're too good to ignore.

Xpost: I mean Inflo is connected, he’s not an artist that gets lost in your spam... if he really wanted their albums to be reviewed by Pitchfork or Rolling Stone, he has worked and probably has the direct contact number of artists like Michael Kiwanuka, Danger Mouse, Belle & Sebastian, Little Simz, The Kooks, Portugal the Man, Jungle... I don’t think knocking on Pitchfork’s or RS’s doors and getting someone to answer is the problem here. Maybe it is, idk.

✖✖✖ (Moka), Wednesday, 22 July 2020 01:23 (three years ago) link

bandcamp doesn't pay artists for streams, whereas plays on spotify *do* generate (very little) residuals. and spotify does have "charts" of sorts that help get the word out. and i like the music a lot anyway, so may as well listen on the platform that generates something for them.

Totally different head. Totally. (Austin), Wednesday, 22 July 2020 01:28 (three years ago) link

Yeah 500k Spotify listeners a month is a shitload and way more than bands “in the machine” with publicists desperately trying to get Stereogum to premiere their blog single or whatever.

I think their attitude is obviously punk and pretty admirable and part of the draw. No information about the band. No press. No label. Nothing.

Totally different head. Totally. (Austin), Wednesday, 22 July 2020 01:35 (three years ago) link

From what I read somewhere (Allmusic?) Kid Sister isn't even on 7, or not much. Cover and Cleo Sol cowrote everything on Cleo's album, so that album sort of IS a Sault album I guess? Hard to say. It's clearly all of a piece or on a continuum.

I finally heard my first Sault song in the wild, I suppose: a pool party that one of the guests was DJing. Hope this trend continues!

Vinnie, Wednesday, 22 July 2020 04:07 (three years ago) link

The albums are *very* affordable on Bandcamp digitally--something like £7, £7, name your price, very very worth it... Very spendy on vinyl/CD, but even there I copped, as these albums have more continuously and consistently brought be joy than basically anything since I got into Arthur Russell 20 years ago.

'Untitled (Rise)' definitely feels... bigger, more "widescreen," less minimalist than earlier work (even than the first 'Untitled (Black Is)'), but without losing the edge and the spirit that makes Sault above-and-beyond almost anything else. It's polished without being "glossy".

On first couple listens last night, there were places where I was smiling and also felt like crying at the brilliance of what Inflo & Co are achieving. Feels like an immense celebration--and also synthesis--of African and Afrodiasporic music and collective strength. I want Sault to be the soundtrack of a radical reawakening of commonality between Black people everywhere and the breaking down of white hegemony... But even if it can't be that, they certainly have been one of the brightest lights in difficult days.

It's just unimaginable that they've created these four almost-perfect (yet highly eclectic) and singular albums in less than 24 months--especially these 24 months. AND that Inflo also played a huge role in shaping Little Simz' 'Grey Area,' Michael Kiwanuka's 'Kiwanuka,' and Cleo Sol's 'Rose In the Dark' during the same time! In 2019, he literally made 4 of my top 5 albums. And in 2020, 3 of my top 10...

gman59, Friday, 18 September 2020 16:40 (three years ago) link

'7' remains closest to my heart--their most perfect front-to-back distillation. But even on just a couple listens, I'll put 'Untitled (Rise' up there with '5,' and 'Untitled (Black Is)' isn't far behind. All of them toward the very top of my favorite music of recent years, which have been my favorite years for new music since... the early 90s.

Soundslike, Friday, 18 September 2020 16:41 (three years ago) link

They have quickly become one of my favorite bands in years. I knew ‘5’ was something special when I first heard it but I wasn’t expecting they’d be 3 more albums in the same ballpark of quality and with such a short span between them.

Not a comparison in sound and this might sound completely off, but they remind me of Stereolab in how they seem to extract influence from some of the best sounds of previous decades into a charming sound of their own. While Stereolab seemed to extract mainly sounds of 60s and early 70s, Sault sound more indebted to the 70s and early 80s.

✖✖✖ (Moka), Friday, 18 September 2020 17:09 (three years ago) link

I can see the Stereolab comparison, in terms of their ability to synthesize/recall forebears without directly mimicking/reviving anyone. And in terms of being prolific-but-quailty.

Difference being I think Sault draws on a much wider musical realm--and drawing globally, and spanning at least 50s R&B, early 60s girl groups/soul/highlife, late 60s/early 70s funk/Afrobeat/Zamrock/Tropicalia/reggae, late 70s post-punk/disco/dub, early 80s boogie/pop, late 80s-mid-90s hip-hop, and much beyond...

well said moka. and definitely agreed about them being one of the best acts to come along in quite some time. i think the last "new" band that came out that i liked this much was king krule and that was nearly a decade ago!

Totally different head. Totally. (Austin), Friday, 18 September 2020 18:31 (three years ago) link

Per Ned's thoughts--for sure, the "romance" and "mystery" of Sault has an appeal--but I view it as less of an defining alluring gimmick (not per se a bad thing, i.e. Daft Punk), and more of something that actually demystifies the Artist and in effect focuses attention on the music itself. (I admit, I've come to see Inflo as a heroic figure, personally, because he's touched so much of my favorite music these last two years--but I still barely have any idea who he is, so even then it's a musically-rooted appreciation).

So for all the mystery, what I love about how warmly Sault has been received by the listening public (seeming to transcend just-us-geeks) is that the reception focuses on the music, and how simply fantastic and singular it is, and how "of the moment" important but also "of the movement" important, and of human existence important. And also maybe the unfathomable rapidity with which so much great music has been created/released. They're a word-of-mouth (thus far) act if there ever was one in the internet age, and the words shared are mostly about "holy shit, you have to hear this". The content is far more significant in their success than the packaging, as it were--which is remarkably refreshing.

(An aside: Sault one of very few acts in my life that have inspired me to just... buy copies for people I think *might* like them (others: Modern Lovers, Arthur Russell, Roy Kinsey). But I have--probably half a dozen times for each album, on Bandcamp days, and I'm pretty certain everyone has been hooked and further spread the word themselves.)

Soundslike, Friday, 18 September 2020 19:01 (three years ago) link

The biggest romance of the mystery for me is wondering who the hell the drummer is and how they're being recorded.

I’m assuming the Cleo Sol album has the same credits (this would mean they have actually created not two, but three outstanding albums this year) and Inflo is credited on bass, drums, piano, additional vocals and production on that album. I’d heavily bet on Inflo being the bass/drums behind every Sault song, as to how he records them we’d have to ask him.

✖✖✖ (Moka), Friday, 18 September 2020 20:56 (three years ago) link

What an amazing record. Free might be their best song (they are approaching a dozen best songs so far) and The Black and Gold is heartbreaking.

One thing that I find weird is that I can't hear the Cleo Sol voice from her solo album in these songs at all, for the most part. Are my ears broken?

I know it's churlish to complain but the two spoken word tracks on this will be deleted from the playlist once I buy this. No Black Violins in London at least has drama (and would have made a good instrumental) but You know it Ain't just sounds like someone very sarcastic complaining at you. I get it but no way do I want to listen to it.

this album is approaching 1000 purchases on bandcamp, which is very impressive for a first day of sales. On the other hand, there are ILXors who should be all over this thread and it's weird that they aren't here, tbh!

Am I the only one that finds it strange that Pitchfork have never reviewed a Sault record? The band have never even been mentioned on the site. I know Pitchfork doesn't have the clout that it had 5-10 years ago but I still find it weird, to put it generously.

Pitchfork bothers me a lot less than it did in the late 90s through 2000s when its writers cared a lot more about being "creative" and they mostly only covered indie rock. But I will say, they still seem to be pretty personality-oriented in their reviews and news coverage--so I guess a group (?) with only one explicitly known member who is himself still mostly unknown as far as biography/personality goes wouldn't be of much interest?

I was just thinking last night I'd love to see a good writer tackle all four albums (with a discussion of other Inflo work) in a single large review? I don't know who'd be a great candidate--I don't actually read a lot of criticism. But I bet ILMers would know who should pitch it...

Soundslike, Friday, 18 September 2020 22:06 (three years ago) link

Inflo as a Prince/Stevie styled composer, building the tracks up from his own rhythm tracks makes a lot of sense for these sounds.

this comment on Petridis's review in The Guardian:

R**watcher*d

It’s a work rate that would seem remarkable at any point in pop history, but feels positively astonishing today,

Having just listened to the exquisite and excoriating Wildfires I don't see anything remarkable about the work rate. Anyone moderately acquainted with ProTools, Logic or Cubase could knock that out in an afternoon, including tea breaks.

"exquisite and excoriating" being a quote from the review being replied to. In his defence the guy did post a track of his own and it was not that bad, actually.

Following up on the Stereolab comparison--I recall that sonically, some tracks from '7' and '5' had mecthinking they actually had some commonalities with Broadcast. Drawing from some of the same 60s (but "other" 60s, a la Library) vibes; a similar just-so minimalism, the penchant for picking only exactly the sound/quantity of elements needed/silence/space and nothing more/less... Thst's become less foregrounded over the last two albums, but I still feel it...

Gerneten-flüken cake (jed_), Sunday, 27 September 2020 00:09 (three years ago) link

I seem to be a bit of the inverse from others here - love all their albums but Black Is has really connected with me, whereas I think Rise might be the weakest of the bunch. Although as a unified statement I like them together - I like the thematic contrasts between them.

sctttnnnt (pgwp), Sunday, 27 September 2020 01:18 (three years ago) link

I'm inclined to agree with you, pg. But ranking them seems unfair, at least in the case of SAULT, as the two albums feel like two parts of a greater statement. And that's also nearly leaving out that all three feel very much like instant classics.

Totally different head. Totally. (Austin), Sunday, 27 September 2020 04:30 (three years ago) link

The fact one can differenciate meaningfully between four albums made in <24 months--while recognizing all are incredibly good--is amazing.

Even if they never put out another record, I feel like these four would grow in stature purely through word-of-mouth for years to come.

But clearly they're on such a roll I doubt the project will be retired any time soon...

Saw a short write-up about the new album in the latest New Yorker. They mentioned that Kid Sister is also part of the group in addition to Inflo and Cleo Sol. (Maybe that’s been mentioned upthread? I feel like ILM has mostly been focused on Inflo and Cleo.) I’m not familiar with her work but a quick look on Spotify, seems like she’s been around about a decade.

yeah kid sister is a known member but has probably been discussed less bc she hasn't really done much recently while inflo's been all over the place and there's this year's wonderful album from cleo. since she started working with inflo all she's released outside of sault is this track last year:

the one other known contributor who no one's really discussed yet here is blk vnyl/kadeem clarke who has writing credits on a few tracks on black is and rise. i can't find that much about him but he produced "one life, might live" by little simz this year and he's played keys live for her and michael kiwanuka, so he's certainly part of that whole scene.

You guys want to throw Keiyaa into the EOY tracks poll? I’m definitely voting for it in the albums poll... can’t really think of a song to represent it... Rectifiya, maybe?

I have a stupid self-imposed rule of only voting one song per album so, for Sault I’m voting Wildfires from Black Is... still undecided on which one for Rise... Strong, Fearless, Just Want to Dance, Free, Little Boy seem to be the ones mentiones the most in this thread and I can’t pick one out of those, they’re all great. Strong has that batucada shift halfway through which I love so much, Fearless has that dramatic disco vocal + strings, I Just Want to Dance and Free are so fun and Little Boy is different in energy, much simpler but one of their most effective moments.

For Cleo Sol I’m going for When I’m In Your Arms. Groovypanda is right... that’s probably the best one from the album.

IMO, Rise starts stronger but from Wildfires on, Black Is goes on a tear

Indexed, Thursday, 10 December 2020 22:30 (three years ago) link

Re: thin production - I think this is a bit of a strength and I hate stuff that has reedy sounds. Helps that their first releases were styled a little too more towards 80s new wave and art pop, and it sounds modeled towards that. Rise has more of a sampledelic 90s vibe, which also makes the mid range sound like it's been taken from other sources

Specific Ocean Blue (dog latin), Friday, 11 December 2020 19:29 (three years ago) link

I think it's part of the appeal, is that none of it rests on crazy production, or hides behind it. The drum sounds are super dry and attainable if you've done any kind of home recording. But it sounds like people playing instruments in an unadorned and refreshing way (like I'm sure it's all stacked overdubs, but not a lot of loops or programming). It lives & dies on the writing & performances, which are foregrounded by the straightforward production. And it consistently does the deceptively simple trick of making great songs out of the fewest possible number of elements.

change display name (Jordan), Friday, 11 December 2020 20:04 (three years ago) link

I love the production on these, sounds to me like they’re trying to sound like a late 70’s band from the post-punk, punk funk, punk dance or whatever it’s called era.

It’s a very conscious decision too, as evidenced by Inflo’s work with other artists.... You can try the Cleo Sol album if you want a lusher, fuller sound by the same people.

fwiw I like (rise) significantly more than (black is) which I find kind of lacking in songs, with a few notable exceptions

Get Me Bodied (Extended Mix), Monday, 21 December 2020 04:33 (three years ago) link

I tend to find that (black is) has more individual songs that jump out at me but (rise) flows better for me as an album & I tend to listen to it right the way through more often. Having said that, Strong is probably my overall favourite song from the two albums.

This is another thread where I don't have much to add but Sault have definitely been one of my biggest listens over the last few months. I hadn't heard anything by them prior to around October, so hearing all four of the albums plus going through the Sault-associated stuff like Cleo Sol solo, Little Simz & Michael Kiwanuka has been a lot of fun and has probably helped open me up to new music generally after going through a phase of mostly listening to older things.

I would say that so far nothing that I've heard involving Inflo or other Sault people outside of Sault has grabbed me quite as much as what they've done as a group, but there's still plenty that's excellent, and the Inflo arrangement/production style with the bass & drum grooves foregrounded is definitely very recognisable across the different projects (and kind of addictive to me). Thanks to everyone on thread for drawing out the links. Still need to give Kid Sister's solo output a shot at some point.

lead times for vinyl pressings are very, very long just now, not helped by covid outbreaks at pressing plants.

The Apollo masters fire made no impact on European pressings. All Euro pressing plants I know of have the longest backlogs I've ever heard of due to a convergence of factors, and then Covid has just exacerbated that. I'd rather not mention specific plants.

stirmonster, Monday, 28 December 2020 03:17 (three years ago) link

"...reviews on discogs pointing out that the pressing isn't great and that it sounds better played from a phone..."

I ordered the repressings(?) listed on Bandcamp and to my surprise the "**Shipping Mid Jan 2021**" vinyl arrived just after Santa (stateside no less).

Without perusing discogs for feedback on the non-black wax, I was just after saying to a friend that these black vinyl releases (some if not all pressed at Optimal) might be the quietest/cleanest new vinyl I've heard in ages.

Dynamics well present and well presented.

tl;dr, get them when/if you can.

The black vinyl of all four impresses with, by way of comparison, the 5 and 7 already in your library, slightly freer of non-distracting-but-not-unexpected-given-the-medium sonic artifacts.

ufo, Friday, 25 June 2021 12:05 (two years ago) link

London Gangs is an instant classic. What an opener. What a bassline. Other standouts after my two back to back listens this morning are Fear and the title track, but I don’t think anything that follows London Gangs quite measures up to that track, which is, again, just explosive.

Bitter Streets is beautiful. I hear the Cardigans, too. But I find the lyrics on this one and Alcohol pretty inane, and I’ve never felt that way about Sault’s lyrics before. Little Simz track completely unnecessary and that sample is obnoxious as hell

Overall, though, a good album I’ll probably end up buying in a moment of weakness I may later regret

i'm not the exact opposite of the consensus here, but i don't think i'm hearing this as the slight that most of you are. it's much shorter than the last two, sure, but the material is just as strong as anything else they've done. i think in "light's in your hands" and especially "bitter streets" it would rank as maybe the prettiest material they've done. super solid, but what's new.

after just a couple listens to nine, i'd rank their catalogue so far as:

1. rise
2. black is
3. 7
4. nine
5. 5

1. 5
2. 7
3. Rise
4 TIE: Black Is / Nine

5 was my introduction to them and as evidenced in this thread, they blew my mind pretty early. It’s also the most consistently great imho. 7 and Rise continue the streak of what we could call their “celebratory” albums. Black Is has some great moments - including “Wildfires” which might be their best song yet - but I think both that one and NINE have a more politically aggressive, protest atmosphere which I also love but I see myself listening to the “celebratory” side of them more often.

That said I agree with Austin that I wouldn’t rate any album of them lower than 4 stars.

✖✖✖ (Moka), Monday, 28 June 2021 17:02 (two years ago) link

At least that’s how they register to me in intention. But we have no idea what’s the artist intent. We still don’t know what does the S.A.U.L.T. acronym even stands for. Is NINE also an acronym? What’s the meaning behind the numeration in the albums?

✖✖✖ (Moka), Monday, 28 June 2021 17:11 (two years ago) link

moka, i've also wondered quite a bit about that myself. i find it interesting that all of the number albums thus far have been odds* and the others, despite having parenthetical titles, are officially "untitled." does it have something to do with how/where they were recorded maybe? the two untitled albums definitely have a "bigger", more fleshed-out sound (generally speaking) than the number albums. idk. music jams, whatever the case may be, so i'm happy.

*(initially i thought maybe they were going for prime numbers only, but that's obviously not the case now that NINE exists.)

things repeat forever and there never is a remedy (Austin), Monday, 28 June 2021 17:21 (two years ago) link

i don't really have an order of favourites but would probably be very similar to ✖✖✖ (Moka).

so far really love 50% of Nine, the other 50% not so much. may change my mind over time.

stirmonster, Monday, 28 June 2021 17:29 (two years ago) link

I suspected it was a sort of numeration for Inflo’s Forever Living Originals label. Maybe Little Simz, Kid Sister and Cleo Sol’s albums and eps were 01, 02, 03, 04 then Sault 5 is 05, Cleo Sol is 06, Sault 7 is 07, the Untitled Sault counts as a single 08 release and Nine is 09 but it’s a stretch and doesn’t quite square up…

I need to account for the first 4 releases: Little Simz - grey, Kid Sister - long way back, Cleo sol - winter songs EP were all released before 5 iirc and could be 1, 2 and 3 but I’m missing another one. There’s an Inflo single from 2018 that could be the one…

✖✖✖ (Moka), Monday, 28 June 2021 17:32 (two years ago) link

So maybe the meaning behind the numbers is really just a catalogue #

✖✖✖ (Moka), Monday, 28 June 2021 17:33 (two years ago) link

But we would need to count both untitled as a single project and it doesn’t work since they weren’t released as a double album.

✖✖✖ (Moka), Monday, 28 June 2021 17:34 (two years ago) link

Maybe it’s the numeration for recording sessions, if both Untitled were recorded in the same sessions then that’s it. But again this is just a theory.

The fact that one could make an absolutely killer "greatest hits" double LP for Sault after only 2.25 years is pretty impressive to me.

That they're consistently the #1 seller on Bandcamp when they drop a new release despite the fsct that they've put the last three albums up to download ob their wevsite for free; that Pitchfork now has to pretend like they've been covering them all along; all based on zero promotion and sparse critical coverage, essentially from pure word-of-mouth, despite virtually no direct social media and despite their participants being nearly anonymous--it's just down to that people really respond to their music.

I've played them for many friends and acquaintances, including a lot of musiicans and producers, and all have become fans and most proselytes themselves.

A pretty remarkable phenomenon. Add in that Inflo has simultaneously produced two Little Simz albums (one of which was my favorite album of its year until I heard Sault's '7'), Cleo Sol, and Michael Kiwanuka--dude has been involved in a huge share of my favorite music these last years.

Actually tried to do this in Spotify but realised that despite having listened to all these albums a few times I'm not 100% familiar with which cut is which. It ended up being about 40% cuts from Rise with stand outs from the others. I really need to listen to 5 a bit more.

I wonder how much ones favorites depends on what one heard first? '5' and '7' hit me hard in late 2019, and their relative "smallness," the stripped-down qualities people associate with ESG/post-punk, really hit me perfectly (especially coming off my love for Little Simz). But during the next summer, their bigger, more global sound was perfect for that time--I loved hearing them stretch out and prove they could do "wide-screen" as much as intimate. But my heart remains with that "smaller" sound I first fell in love with...

Soundslike, Tuesday, 29 June 2021 13:29 (two years ago) link

We shuffled the first four albums during hours of rural driving last September, past endless Trump signs and Trump shrines. It got me through, but it's rendered their catalog a big saulty life raft where I adore even the less-stunning bits just as much obvious masterstrokes, and the then-recent Untitled tracks are blended together. It was a bit of a shock to have new tracks this week, given the turmoil they've pulled me through, nearly like skeptically listening to a comeback record after a decade. Time is so fucked up now. After four or five listens I can't tell if this was more of a grower or I just was so fulfilled by this group I needed to make a little space in my brain for more.

Love this album as much as all the others. I dont think it’s slight at all - more that Cleo Sol’s presence feels a little more limited. She doesn’t seem to really show up until the second half and one of those is the under-baked “Alcohol”. Agree that and “You From London” are the weakest stretch but I still enjoy both songs. Really love the first half, and it finishes strong with 9 and Light.

“Fear” feels almost like a Beak> track.

Yeah, they have this quality where I can imagine playing a little riff or coming up with a little sing-song hook and dismissing it as nothing, but they will commit to a small idea with confidence and it's great. Maybe it comes off as under-written to some people, but to me it's a great ability to recognize what could actually be a whole song.

man. it has been so long since a new release came out that felt like such an instant classic. even the last couple of king krule albums were growers for me, but this just has that feel to it. i'm in no position to make such declarations, as my intake of new music has been at its cynically lowest point ever, but this is my favorite album of the year. easily.

[/FREAKOUT POST PROPER]

like my friend andy would say: hey, yeah, that's pretty good.

Build Me Up is incredible.

Am I the only one who can't square Cleo's solo songs with the fact that she's the lead on most Sault tracks? Cleo solo sounds very little like she does on the Sault records. Maybe she does and I have a blind ear on this.

Heavy Messages (jed_), Friday, 20 August 2021 23:35 (two years ago) link

her voice is typically more obscured in sault - usually processed a little, lower in the mix, and often multi-tracked or with additional backing vocalists

hearing a lot of D'Angelo on this too, just as I did with some Sault tracks, most especially on B.A.B.E. from 5. Not really getting the Mama's Gun ref, tbh.

Mr. Cacciatore (Moodles), Saturday, 21 August 2021 17:34 (two years ago) link

Personally, not liking it better than Rose in the Dark. Feels to me like it could lose a couple of songs to be tighter, not that I don’t like any song in particular, as they all sound great, but it feels a bit homogenic in some runs. It’s also a bit frontloaded imho as two of the standouts are the opening songs.

I’d probably lose “heart full of love” and “know that you are loved”

✖✖✖ (Moka), Saturday, 21 August 2021 17:55 (two years ago) link

Funny, I had the same Erykah Badu feeing the first time I listened to it. Just played it again - on better speakers and with more focused attention - and that similarity feels a lot harder to track.

Anyway, I don’t love this record but I think that says more about my own taste than I does about Cleo’s ambition. I just don’t generally go for the jazzier side of this genre.

Funny, I think this is maybe too long overall BUT the best songs are the ones that stretch for 7-8 minutes, “Build Me Up” especially. Would love a record from her that is maybe just 8 tracks but still an hour long.

Gonna stick my neck out and say it's pretty good. Reminds me a bit of the last Jessie Ware album in that the production is very reverential in parts (here it's Curtis/Marvin/Rotary/Roy Ayers rather than 70s/80s disco) but still its own thing. Plan is to listen on repeat for a week and then see where we're at.

it's mellow but never boring, it's so beautiful & constantly surprising with interesting turns. i wouldn't cut anything either, the length feels generous rather than bloated.

ufo, Saturday, 21 August 2021 22:52 (two years ago) link

So, a couple of listens in, I feel it's an album that will grow on me. My first impressions are that the emotional, self help lyrical content is a little underwhelming compared to 'roses in the dark' and feels a bit like treading old ground. The production lacks an edge of funk too that I feel the other album had, the retro organic instrument palette can be samey, as nice as it is. It think she has rejected more mainstream r'n'b production styles for a long while ago (you get the sense that she's got burnt trying to navigate the industry), but I'd kinda like her to try some more up tempo stuff again ( I first came across her with this poppy dance r'n'b track and would like to see her add some faster funkier favours to another release.

i think it is a strong statement to make and tells the world how they, and they alone are in control of their output, and how it is "consumed". it feels quite empowering to me to be able to put out music for a limited period and then withdraw it at a certain point. why not? after all, it's not like it has totally vanished off the face of the earth. if someone really wants to find it they can still find ways to seek it out.

Late to the party here. I recently gave a coworker a mix cd, knowing that they keep up with music and have a player. Today I came to work and there was a vinyl mailer on my desk. He gave me a copy of Rise and it is my new favorite thing. "You Know it Ain't"!!! So damn good. Is all of it as good as Rise? Sorry, I haven't taken the time to read through the thread. This is the first I've heard of Sault.

Cow_Art, Saturday, 23 October 2021 04:39 (two years ago) link

rise is their best album, black is is also really good, but they're all worth a listen

there's quite an extended universe though, there's the five sault albums, then rose in the dark and mother by cleo sol (who's often on lead vocals in sault), and then grey area and sometimes i might be introvert by little simz, and love & hate and kiwanuka by michael kiwanuka. all those albums are produced by inflo, and simz and kiwanuka have shown up on sault tracks too.

my favourite out of all of them is mother, then rise.

ufo, Saturday, 23 October 2021 05:27 (two years ago) link

IMO, '7' and '5' remain their best, most focused albums. But the 'wide-screen' version of Sault on the 'Untitled' albums is also wonderful, and 'Nine' is quite good, too.

And don't forget to get Cleo Sol's fantastic two albums, the latest two Michael Kiwanuka albums, and especially Little Simz' 'Grey Area,' all very much related to Sault's genius as they're all produced by Sault's Inflo.

(Nine is now on Amazon in three formats, like other Sault etc. releases, maybe all.)
from a proselytizing email to friends:
...Sault rules that 1. You must channel classic R&B. 2.You may not merely lay back and wallow in it, or not without paying the fare of customizing.
So Cleo Sol, who has me with the first celestial phrasing of first track on new Mother, could settle for that, but usually she makes her point early on, often in small units, a few words, few syllables, few notes, piano mirrors, centering the swirl. And then, pretty often she's set the clock with...several--more minutes to fill, with killer filler, at the very least. Testing herself and listener. Another instant fave in this vein: "Build Me Up." "Build me up. Set me free." She sounds like she knows she's hard to please, but the song really tries, like for A Thousand One Nights of fabulous tales, whew (sucks for them, great for me).

In another one (so many I haven't sorted them out yet), she's being fascinating as usual, when suddenly--"Hello?" sounds like she's ducked back there---taking a call, losing connection, both? Uh-oh. It's cool, Cleo, the song and I will wait for you. "Hello?" Sounds like she's going back down the hall---
No more spoilers. This is an often ravishing, well-grounded, long-ass album, but no prob so far w all in one sitting. May skip a couple eventually, but would rather have too many to chose from than few, or it may be too many to chose and discard from period (either way, well-played, Cleo

mother is a great album, low-key but never boring, flits subtly through many production styles. The opening track is as hard hitting as I've ever heard Cleo, her confessional mission is brutal as its tender. She's a great story teller and she soars in the slick, groovy moods that inflo brings to many songs. He is more restrained in these projects, Cleo contributions are heavily effected and chopped around in lots of sault tracks. Cleo's solo stuff has her singing talent front and centre and while arguably more politically toned down, the personal politics of the music is not to be underestimated. She's been through some shit. She got something to say about getting out of shit. More power to you, Cleo, I can listen to more albums like this, for sure.

I don't know if I'm correct but I would not be surprised if one of the reason they don't perform live is that it's such a studio designed sound they bring. I suspect, despite the plethora of voices across their music, the majority of it is Inflo and Cleo together in the studio, using pitch shifting and delays and massive reverbs to create identity shifting variety. Just two people with endless creativity at their fingertips and the skill and musicality to make it count.

I'm on the record as loving intimate-scale Sault best--but I also love that Inflo & Co. recognize absolutely no limitations or boundaries to the breadth and depth of their musical ambitions. So I am grinning ear to ear to hear them create a choral-orchestral widescreen opus. And I'll be grinning when the next release sounds like Chrissy Zebby Tembo or is all acoustic spiritual jazz or is two side-long Black prog-rock tracks. Because I know it's going to be at least quite good, and it's going to be audacious.

As the harp came in on "Heart" rain droplets started in a mostly cloudless night. Seems like I'm destined to have moments with this band. "Heart" and "Luos Higher" with the mix of harp and koto (I think?) are really wonderful. Dorothy Ashby likely in the influences here.

But seems like there was an opportunity to construct something with a grand "Les Fleurs" payoff, and they don't go for that.

Re Jordan’s comment about the cost of the recording sessions: some of the choir parts are very audibly samples, which got me wondering if all of the orchestral and choral elements might have been assembled out of public domain sound samples (these do exist). Probably not, but it would raise the interest level of this project for me by several factors of 10 if that were the case.

Halfway there but for you, Friday, 15 April 2022 22:59 (two years ago) link

I just assume the orchestral and choir stuff is just Inflo and Chloe playing a midi keyboard on a laptop. Shit sounds pretty good and real these days.

Re: my comment above about loving their boldness - I like that they are obviously doing what they want to do and aren’t worried at all about what people will think. I don’t mean that I think they are trolling people or anything. Someone concerned with making money or developing their career would not release an album like this, and I admire them for not caring about that stuff.

SA, Friday, 15 April 2022 23:51 (two years ago) link

yeah, don't get me wrong: new album is whatever, but they've still got my undivided attention.

Let's disco dance, Hammurabi! (Austin), Saturday, 16 April 2022 01:05 (two years ago) link

Agreed. It's not that I think every track of every record is equally brilliant. But I love that they are confident in their vision as something with longevity, confident enough to release albums that won't be to everyone's liking but that may really hit home with some, and that will live in a body of work that people will be discovering and assessing for a long time to come, almost entirely through word-of-mouth.

Cynicism about them (not as much expressed here, more elsewhere) as somehow contrived and "brand oriented" seems super off. Obviously mystique can help move records, but that kind would usually be highly cultivated (a la Daft Punk, whom I love no less for it). Call me naive, but on the scale Sault have been operating for years now (that is, "big on Bandcamp, your favorite's fave" bit hardly rating in the Big Pop world) I'm persuaded the mostly-anonymous, certainly no interviews or social media presence speaks again to confidence in the music to speak to people for itself. I think it has, and will continue to do so even when they all move on from the project, likely into more traditional spotlights.

Soundslike, Saturday, 16 April 2022 04:13 (two years ago) link

Meant to also say specifically: I admire they're confident enough to release a choral-orchestral album that will probably be too "weird" for many of those with no frame of reference, and too staid and maybe even obvious for those versed in similar work; but that might make a good chunk of folks interested in the approach who might not have been before.

Soundslike, Saturday, 16 April 2022 04:16 (two years ago) link

And yeah, if this was done with VSTs... Damn.

Soundslike, Saturday, 16 April 2022 04:44 (two years ago) link

Glad if anyone digs this, and props to them for following their muse, but I feel like I went to the ice cream store and Sault was like, “Sorry, no ice cream today, all we’re serving up is pretzels,” and I was like, “You do you, but Phil Glass’s place down the street does better pretzels. I’ll pass.”

ufo, Saturday, 16 April 2022 08:52 (two years ago) link

I wouldn't be surprised if this was all VST's. I don't think this is an attempt to confound expectations as much as showcasing what they can else they can do, maybe with an eye on a movie soundtrack/t.v. music gig. It can be a very lucrative platform to get into, especially when you are a prodigious studio producer and a creative, technical vocalist that seem to be reticent about performing live shows. I might be wrong but aren't Cleo and Inflo now husband and wife or partners with kids? moving in this direction makes sense to me, given their talents and options.

Swanswans, Saturday, 16 April 2022 13:10 (two years ago) link

given that this is basically a homage to David Axelrod, i think i will be listening to this a lot more than anything else for a while.

mark e, Saturday, 16 April 2022 16:43 (two years ago) link

Glad you like it so much. What about it reminds you of David Axelrod?

(I'm a huge Axelrod fan and know his records extremely well. Nothing on Air recalls Axelrod. I'm curious what you're hearing.)

Let's disco dance, Hammurabi! (Austin), Saturday, 16 April 2022 18:14 (two years ago) link

it's not a direct groove,
but the use of excess orchestral and choral vibes,
definitely makes me think this is the kind of thing that the axe would make had he had the chance again.

mark e, Saturday, 16 April 2022 18:27 (two years ago) link

I feel like an Axelrod or Jankovic sound (i.e. with drums, bass and guitar surrounded by orchestration) would've been more ehat I would've expected in a wide-screen Sault record. Might've sounded something like an Adrian Younge/Midnight Hour sound. But the beat-less/bass-lessness seems intentional...

Soundslike, Saturday, 16 April 2022 20:40 (two years ago) link

Oh, absolutely. Axe's 90s recordings are mostly without drums, but very dissonant. Can definitely hear how some of the weirder high register harmonics on Air are somewhat reminiscent of Earth Rot. If pressed, I'd say Air reminds me of Charles Stepney meets Alice Coltrane, but if you just broke both of those core sounds down to their barest of bare essentials.

Let's disco dance, Hammurabi! (Austin), Saturday, 16 April 2022 21:02 (two years ago) link

Let's disco dance, Hammurabi! (Austin), Monday, 18 April 2022 19:57 (two years ago) link

That silly Bandcamp review makes me think, maybe a small motivation for this record could be sensing they were starting to be critically/popularly pinned down, and they don't strike me as having been interested in being defined and hence constrained. I always expect the unexpected from them.

ufo, Monday, 10 October 2022 05:01 (one year ago) link

Listening now.

It’s labelled as an EP on itunes but it’s actually one 10min track. That said it’s not really a 10 min song, it’s actually different songs with the same vocalist - no idea who this is, it’s a reggae guest artist that hadn’t been used on any SAULT song previously afaik.

First track (or section if you will) is a funk-reggae fusion, second one is a piano ballad that has some cool 70’s aor prog choir arrangements towards the end, third segment is a spoken word interlude, fourth one is a soulful chill tune.

I think it could count as an EP, wish it was actually spliced into 4 tracks instead of a single one. Specially because I’m not a fan of spoken word segments and will probably find myself skipping that section.

✖✖✖ (Moka), Monday, 10 October 2022 05:12 (one year ago) link

ufo, Monday, 10 October 2022 05:15 (one year ago) link

It’s a pretty cool trio of songs imho, Inflo nails different 70’s production styles and having a reggae singer on top of them makes a very original contrast. I don’t think I’ve ever heard reggae singers on things that sound like idk Emerson Lake and Palmer.

Hope this isn’t the m.o. for future releases. If they want to release a bunch of ep’s in this format and a compilation it’d be ideal, the un-spliced tracks drive me crazy on streaming though. I started working on a Sault tribute mix in 2021, and had 14 hours of tracks as a first pass after having culled through about half of my albums... realized it's basically impossible because they distill so many traditions.

And that was before they revealed the further facets of 'Nine' 'Ten' and especially 'Air'. And now all these!

So far I've listened to Today & Tomorrow, Earth and Aiir. Aiir is more of his orchestral work, which is nice enough but I feel like he should be doing movie soundtracks or something. But the other two are great! Love the rock/punk vibe on T&T, and Earth has the kind of range that the 2020 albums did. "Valley of the Ocean" is my top pick so far, but I've liked a bunch of the songs.

I'm going to take my time listening to these albums. i put on T&T earlier while catching up on emails and actually forgot what i was listening to. I genuinely thought i was listening to some lost Zamrock gem for a while until the fourth track when some Sault-y-ness became apparent. Then it went all over the place in the best possible way. The Plan is as close to Punk as i imagine Sault might get. So good! While T&T perhaps starts off feeling like an unfinished experiment / jam it soon becomes fully formed greatness. Above The Sky is already in my imagined Sault's Greatest Hits playlist.

looking forwatd to listening to 11 tomorrow.

stirmonster, Wednesday, 2 November 2022 01:49 (one year ago) link

I'll take my time re-listening to them, but finished my binge today with Untitled (God) and 11. Both also really good! Leaving Aiir aside — and it's not bad either, just sort of bores me — the other four are way more killer than filler. With a big musical range. Pretty impressive.

so far only heard untitled (god) and today & tomorrow - don't really care for the lyrical focus of untitled (god) but it's one of their strongest releases. today & tomorrow is a bit patchier though

ufo, Wednesday, 2 November 2022 10:17 (one year ago) link

11 is fine, it's focused on their lower-key bass-driven sound, quite pleasant but nothing exciting here

I've only had time listen to fragments of each release so far. I'm skeptical of this predominant turn towards religion. I have listened to and loved a whole lot of gospel blues and religious music in my life but it's not necessarily something for which I turn to Sault. It kinda makes them seem more like a cult than an interesting collective of artists, but I recognize this may be a snap judgment.

That's interesting, what would you call albums of its kind? I'm not sure where it resides.

Can't yet sort through all my feelings that this lode of music and ideas unleashes, but what consistently amazes me is that I buy all of their conceptual swerves. Maybe because they've insulated themselves from commercial concerns, even when the self-affirmation gets thick (their trait which I find least appealing) I still go with it. Find it transcendent even. A track like "Together" on 11 - do they work out a Band of Gypsies groove and then decide "let's have Althea and Donna styled vocals on top"? Cause it's a great idea, but in the hands of Lenny Kravitz or Jack White or Raphael Saadiq is would be precious or overthought or annoying. They really know how to work an idea without draining the life out of it.

ty fgti, that's an interesting assessment since that realm is pretty much unknown territory to me. I do get what you're talking about here, definitely it feels very accomplished. As does most of what he/they do. I'm trying to think of anyone or anything comparable to Sault and can't really. Obviously they have a ton of influences mentioned throughout this whole thread, but the range and virtuosity and sheer dgaf-ness of the way it's all presented is really something. One thing I thought with all five albums dropping was, this is what Prince probably would have liked to do in the mid-'80s, when he was just firing on all cylinders. Not to compare Inflo to Prince, but the "Watch this trick, now this one" vibe is similar.

Also someone's gotten around to putting these on YouTube, so here's one of my favorites so far. ("Valley of the Ocean," which I mentioned above.)

Fash Gordon (Neanderthal), Thursday, 3 November 2022 19:05 (one year ago) link

Terrible take. Also it’s sort of taking issue with statements not made by the band? The band themselves are not explicit about their intentions with each release, we don’t know if they’re commenting about the perception of scarcity or democratization of art or the disposability and/or fleetingness of the medium or whatever this reviewer is taking from it.

The anonymity amplifies the music, which should be the focus imho

✖✖✖ (Moka), Thursday, 3 November 2022 19:06 (one year ago) link

between assuming that most of the music is improvised and that the band is a cooperative of hundreds of pro session musicians "donating bits of spare stuff"(?), he seems to be completely naïve about the basics of how bands operate and how albums are recorded. its very strange, especially considering his bio identifies him as a former "Professor of Music Industry Innovation"

It’s a dumb piece

AIR does sound like a hybrid of session orchestra and VSTs… what impresses me most about it is the plucked string writing— dual harps (which at times sounds like, and might be, a kora) and pipa, it’s produced/recorded/written extremely well— less so but still the case on AIIR

I intuit that this is a really bad argument, but I don't have the verbal skills to explain why rn

I was struck today while attempting a listen-through of Untitled (God) that the inclusion of so many essentially-unfinished tracks and field recordings was depreciating the value of my time spent as a listener

flamboyant goon tie included, Friday, 4 November 2022 16:29 (one year ago) link

I think that argument would make more sense for an independent artist that operates far less cryptically and maybe only releases one album every 2-3 years. I think most people familiar with Sault realize by now they're doing their own singular thing and keeping people guessing.

Chris L, Friday, 4 November 2022 20:25 (one year ago) link

BTW, I'm listening to "Air" for the first time this year. It didn't sound like it would be my thing but it kinda is. It sounds the score of an uplifting film from an alternate 50s/early 60s Hollywood that had greater equality.

Chris L, Friday, 4 November 2022 20:29 (one year ago) link

Finally got to listen to one of these, with full attention--randomly chose '11'. It is very low-key, but personally I love that from Sault--super stripped-down, like I loved from '5' and '7' but mellower. A perfect sound space for what was a beautiful autumn afternoon.

(I still can't really get into the quasi-motivational spoken word parts, as with the previous 'Untitled' albums, but as a jaded non-religious anti-self-help realist, I'm probably as far from the target audience of those parts as possible.)

I feel like I'm going to love 'Today & Tomorrow,' as a big fan of Ngozi Family and Chrissy Zebby Tembo, and Zamrock generally, few bits I heard on preview really reminded me of.

Soundslike, Friday, 4 November 2022 23:50 (one year ago) link

Insofar as “a consumer listening to recorded music”, the recorded music has been without-value-to-the-creator for over two decades— for those of us who did use Napster, creators who did encourage people to buy what they could afford and steal what they couldn’t, for those of us who groaned at Lars Ulrich etc.

The obscenity that creators face at present is that third parties have stepped in to profit off the consumer-artist association without fairly compensating the creator. Personally I’d prefer that consumers steal music than listen to it via Spotify et al, and I think this is a common feeling, so long as DSPs continue to be big-business thieves

Claiming that a creator is depreciating the value of recorded music in this specific usage of it— consumers listening in private— by making the music free, is incorrect. Within this context I posit that recorded music has long been effectively valueless; the evil profiteers within the industry are DSPs, not creators who make their music available for free

Thanks for indulging me as a type about a difficult thing to type about

'Today & Tomorrow' just had me grinning ear to ear from about 3 minutes into the opener all the way through. Scuzzy proto-metal/Zamrocky fuzz guitar, bouncy and loose drums, and "lead vocals" mostly by what sounds like a dozen kids--just an absolute joy.

Released on its own, I think some people would've lashed out against 'Today & Tomorrow' for its simplicity and (intentional) low-polish approach (just as some might simultaneously dislike 'Aiir' for being too polished). Hopefully as part of this mega-batch-release, people can roll with it as a valid facet of Sault's many paths of expression.

Are the credits for the recent batch of releases available anywhere? It would be interested to know the delineation of writing, producing, arranging on these records. From some digging I did on social media it looks like some new people were involved. It would be good to get a complete picture.

Ibadan, Sunday, 27 November 2022 07:25 (one year ago) link

all that's available for some of their previous albums is writing credits from publishing databases, but there's nothing about any of this year's releases on those.

on previous albums, writing credits were generally inflo/cleo sol or inflo/kid sister, depending on who's doing lead vocals - occasionally both. kadeem clarke (a session guy who's a regular inflo collaborator) is credited occasionally. instrumentals are often credited just to inflo. occasionally others are credited, like simz and kiwanuka on the tracks they're featured on, and josh lloyd-watson from jungle and jack penante have made appearances before.

producing is pretty clearly all inflo though, it's his project.

there do seem to be some new vocalists appearing on this most recent set of releases but i haven't made any effort to identify them.

the whole identity of the band is like a giant marketing gimmick?

budo jeru, Sunday, 30 July 2023 16:09 (eight months ago) link

There's a shtick about it, but it's only effective because of the music. As you say about "Fear No One" e.g.

It doesn’t cross over into too much of a gimmick for me. There’s been some fan service — artificial scarcity with Nine or giving away the last five for free by word of mouth, but it mostly seems rooted in Inflo’s preference to stay out of the spotlight and the collective’s desire to do whatever they want.

Terrycoth Baphomet (bendy), Sunday, 30 July 2023 16:58 (eight months ago) link

it's likely not even the fault of the band (or whatever it is), there's just kind of an aura of obsessive fandom, too many releases, got sort of overwhelmed and tuned out

budo jeru, Sunday, 30 July 2023 21:00 (eight months ago) link

Nine was good. But the FIVE albums last year were all underwhelming at best, compared to what came before. Suddenly the balance between quality and quantity is all out of whack.

sctttnnnt (pgwp), Sunday, 30 July 2023 21:45 (eight months ago) link

they are underwhelming if you expect to be overwhelmed by them, I think. I dunno I listened to three of them in a row the other week and really liked them. they don't feel as important as the first several but they were good listening. they felt a bit more like mixtapes or extended jams in some ways but I liked them.

I? not I! He! He! HIM! (akm), Monday, 31 July 2023 00:24 (eight months ago) link

It could work as a schtick but I think there’s more to it. There’s only like one photo of Inflo out there iirc and he was already very active prior to Sault.

I don’t think it’s a marketing schtick, even if it ends up working to their favor in some situations, they miss getting reviewed by not doing any press releases and most importantly getting booked for liveshows by being so willfully reclusive.

My theory is that Inflo just really hates the spotlight, he just really loves doing music in the studio and doesn’t care about the rest.

We’ll see I guess but if it was merely a marketing schtick they’ve let pass the timing - and truckloads of money - by not doing any performances anywhere in the past 5 years

✖✖✖ (Moka), Monday, 31 July 2023 03:59 (eight months ago) link

Which is to say, if this is a marketing ploy it’s actually making them lose money.

Iirc excluding strings almost everything you hear on Sault and Cleo Sol’s albums is Inflo.

That’s the other thing though, it’s not really a mystery when everyone knows who is running the show.

✖✖✖ (Moka), Monday, 31 July 2023 05:12 (eight months ago) link

i got the impression there were likely a bunch of session players from the whole scene around inflo involved

ufo, Monday, 31 July 2023 05:50 (eight months ago) link

I envision Inflo laying laying down the drums and bass himself a lot of the time. They’re so distinctively plain and raw, they have that quality of a multi-instrumentalist songwriter like Prince rather than session player expertise.

Terrycoth Baphomet (bendy), Monday, 31 July 2023 13:35 (eight months ago) link

The 3 tracks Inflo produced and cowrote with Adele do have credits and Inflo is credited as playing bass, guitar, electric guitar, drums, piano, organ, percussion, wurlitzer, handclaps.

The only additional musicians credited are Chris Dave on drums, bongo, percussion and David Campbell for strings.

So, I think if it’s mostly inflo doing that on a high profile project Cleo and him are pretty much all the permanent Sault team with some guests here and there.

✖✖✖ (Moka), Monday, 31 July 2023 15:54 (eight months ago) link

i can believe that inflo plays a lot of stuff on the sault albums but it's not just him.

the full credits for cleo sol's mother are available and there's more than just inflo on it (he's credited with keys/bass/backing vocals) and it mostly seems to have been recorded as a band.

going through the credits:
kadeem clarke (keys) - he has writing credits on a few sault and little simz tracks, has played on michael kiwanuka and little simz albums, and toured with little simz
michael jablonka (guitar) - kiwanuka's live guitarist
rosie danver (cello & string arrangements) - she's done the string arrangements for a lot of inflo-produced album as well as kanye, adele and many other big names
nathan allen (drums) - he's played on sault records (https://www.saynathan.com/resume) as well as with little simz and kiwanuka and seems to be an in-demand session drummer
alex bonfanti (bass) - kiwanuka's live bassist
graham godfrey (percussion) - kiwanuka's live drummer, played on kiwanuka and little simz albums, also confirmed to have played on sault records (https://www.serendeepity.net/product/pigeon-yagana-ep/)
lewis wright (percussion) - has played with little simz and michael kiwanuka

so just by going through that i was able to confirm a few more names involved in sault beyond clarke (who i was already aware of from the writing credits)

and i forgot to list that rosie danvers has done arrangements for sault too - air, aiir, untitled (rise), and one other (probably untitled (black is) but i can't find confirmation)

ufo, Monday, 31 July 2023 23:02 (eight months ago) link

Yeah you might be on to something. Strings are definitely guests (unless he's using some really good synth patches) - I guess eventually we'll find out.

Nathan Allen's resume is very impressive btw

the strings would just be danvers' string section, wired strings

It's out today. Feels relatively inessential in comparison to her other albums on first listen, but was pleasant enough.

definitely much lower-key than her previous albums but it's still gorgeous and there's a lot to like here

they're also teasing future shows: https://www.instagram.com/reel/C0odyS1NO_-/

they're going to perform 5 in new york, nine in london, black is in los angeles, rise in canada, 11 in germany, air in paris, and earth in africa. guessing they haven't fully figured out the details yet lol

seems like they played an orchestral set, then the new album acts of faith, and then a set covering their entire career, wow. "fear no man" might be the little simz song i guess? no idea what "ever so lonely" or the africa section are.

the song they previewed here: https://www.instagram.com/saultglobal/reel/C0WHnqxtTaL/ seems to be "act 6 - lessons"

This looks insane. Idk how they are not losing money with this? The set, crew, amount of performers and planning seems like it wouldn’t get covered by the audience volume and £100 sounds like a bargain for what they did here.

who would have thought a band that is all boutique gimmicks would go down the punchdrunk theatre/secret cinema route eh

imago, Friday, 15 December 2023 12:11 (four months ago) link

no one would care about the gimmicks if the music wasn't genearlly pretty good-to-great

ufo, Friday, 15 December 2023 12:31 (four months ago) link

Cow_Art, Friday, 15 December 2023 12:34 (four months ago) link

yeah, i don't care about all the release gimmicks & secrecy but this is a genuinely impressive wild spectacle

ufo, Friday, 15 December 2023 12:41 (four months ago) link

bendy, Friday, 15 December 2023 13:06 (four months ago) link

Chris L, Friday, 15 December 2023 13:20 (four months ago) link

Yeah got to agree in the end the music is what makes it all work and judging by the videos of the performance they sound amazing live. Cleo Sol in particular is a great vocalist.

from the Giles Peterson FB post: This hasn’t ever been done on such grand scale from the private sector.
Any talk of ripping off the fans couldn’t be further from the truth - the cost of putting on this happening wasn’t about cash it was about Myth…

It's such a throwback to a different time and economy where a performer can leverage the success of their musical vision to do all this extra stuff. With the extra stuff being weird.

I'm curious anyway!

bae (sic), Friday, 15 December 2023 19:30 (four months ago) link

Oh you mean the review? Here it is

Reviews will be everywhere but here’s my take…
@saultglobal the phenomenon.
First and most important - the music - faultless - from the opening playlist - Fela …. Ebo Taylor… A grand orchestral score with huge choir , 2 harps and every instrument under the sun - musicians spread across 5 stages pretty much encircling the 2500 audience - imagine Jools ‘ show on a grander scale… the sound was all round with not a single feedback all night… it was almost 3 hours of music - George Clinton would have been proud - a Mothership Connection London style!
walking into the venue immersive and in line via a fridge and mirrored cactus hall… taking in art, fashion - choreography, lighting and film - this could have graced any world leading museum or gallery - there were guests a plenty - Simz - Chronnix- Kiwanuka - Kid Sister - Ganayva- and of course the force that is Cleo Sol…
I tend to avoid the Arena type mega events where Beyoncé, Adele and the like produce their shows - but this was as ambitious but as a ‘One Off’ … unheard of - economically impossible to justify if you were to try and convince any suits in the accounts department - I saw no sign of commerciality - Inflo would have invested at least 10 x more than he got back from ticket sales.
This hasn’t ever been done on such grand scale from the private sector.
Any talk of ripping off the fans couldn’t be further from the truth - the cost of putting on this happening wasn’t about cash it was about Myth… ps thank you @pomontenegro for somehow obtaining a written set list !!!!

✖✖✖ (Moka), Friday, 15 December 2023 19:32 (four months ago) link

sweet!

bae (sic), Friday, 15 December 2023 19:59 (four months ago) link

There's physically no way their next shows (outside of London) will be the insane total-experience of this show, surely.

But I'm going to be more tortured now than I was already, that there's no way my health will allow going to the NY show (which will focus on my second favorite album of theirs, '5').

Makes me sad that, of all the obvious things to be negative and cynical about in this era, people would approach Sault that way. "Gimmicks," "funding," etc. For some people, Sault/Inflo would be damned either way. They keep the focus on the music, totally indeoendent, on celebrating Black art in multitudinous form, even giving away the music, instead of focusing on celebrity, and the music creating genuine word-of-mouth excitement over several years--it's "trying to create mystery," "gimmicks," "a cult," etc. But they get any taste of success, mainstream praise, etc., it's try-hard, hype, etc. Weird stuff, to me. I for one wish there were far more acts approaching things like Sault, and far fewer megacorporations in pop musician form.

Soundslike, Friday, 15 December 2023 21:23 (four months ago) link

I mean I agree with you, but I don't think most acts could afford to pull off such a thing, given that most acts these days are probably going into personal debt just going on short tours across the midwest

Paul Ponzi, Friday, 15 December 2023 22:46 (four months ago) link

So let’s be thankful there’s someone still willing to do this.

Tsar Bombadil (James Morrison), Friday, 15 December 2023 23:03 (four months ago) link

apparently they're never releasing the new material they played live so that's the sort of gimmick that is bullshit

ufo, Sunday, 17 December 2023 21:08 (four months ago) link

Not sure how/why that's bullshit. They don't owe us anything in particular, if they want to create a one-off experience it seems like that's their call. It's not like Sault in general has been stingy with their fans!

a man often referred to in the news media as the Duke of Saxony (tipsy mothra), Sunday, 17 December 2023 21:18 (four months ago) link

they can do what they want and i can think ultra-exclusive stuff like that is dumb and obnoxious. i think the same about the wu-tang album they auctioned off for instance

i don't have an issue with the live show being a crazy one-off production, there was obviously a ridiculous expense there and live shows are inherently ephemeral

ufo, Sunday, 17 December 2023 23:47 (four months ago) link

I guess it wouldn't feel quite as exclusive if they actually toured this new stuff through secondary and even tertiary cities, which of course they won't do (no judgment - I sure as hell wouldn't do that either). Still, the idea of some poor Sault fan in Kansas having to make do with crappy YT videos and IG reels if they want to hear new Sault music does seem a little unfair

Paul Ponzi, Monday, 18 December 2023 00:53 (four months ago) link

they are not exactly known for being stingy with releasing music - theyve released what, a dozen albums over the last 4 years? Many of which were free? I feel like that kid in kansas is getting a pretty fair deal

waste of compute (One Eye Open), Monday, 18 December 2023 03:23 (four months ago) link
