Q: how long can these songs be?
A: any length at all, as long as it's under 2 minutes. 2 minutes on the dot doesn't count.

Q: why doesn't 2 minutes on the dot count?
A: mookieproof said so, and it sounded right to me

A: it was Leee's idea, but he's busy and didn't want the ultimate power. but now i wield it flawlessly to make everyone suffer through endless Q&A, ahahahaahahaha next Q!

Q: why isn't it under 1:30 instead? why isn't it under 2:30 instead? why isn't it under 1:00 instead? actually shouldn't it be under 1:45 instead?
A: mookieproof was really pushy about all of this, he demanded under 2

Q: there's a song that is 1:58 on one streaming platform, and 2:01 on another. does it count?
A: uuuuuuuuugh. that's going to happen, isn't it? mookieproof? mookieproooooof!!?? my gut tells me to just go with common sense on a case-by-case basis and count songs where the majority of the main music platforms/players (spotify, iTunes, apple music, the track length that appears on your CD player, etc) agree that it's under 2 minutes. or we could go with some formal average of 3 to 4 platforms. or maybe someone else has an idea? my main rule is just don't be a total dick about things, please. in other words, if the song is clearly just a bit over 2 minutes but you can find some obscure web player that gives everyone viruses but displays the track length as 1:57, just fuck off and don't do that shit just to get some dumb song into a poll nominations list. that said, i expect there will be some legit examples of songs that are right at the 1:59/2:00 mark and we'll have to figure out what to do. if anyone has a suggestion i'm all ears (mooookieprooooof!??!!)

A: um, how about March 1, does that sound ok? if it peters out before then, i'm happy to just jump straight to the voting thread, and if lots of great nominations are still rolling in, we'll keep it open for a bit longer. but for now let's shoot for March 1.

Q: what do you feel are the greatest strengths of this poll?
A: the > 10 minutes poll, while amazing, also resulted in a top 100 playlist that was, at the very minimum, over 16 hours long. the <2 minutes top 100 playlist would be digestable in a little over 3 hours, and most likely must shorter than that. the top 20 songs songs under 2 minutes of ALL time will be less than 40 minutes, total. that means you could listen to the playlist over 36 times every day until you die. wow!

And just to be clear the capitalisation of 'maudlin of the Well' and 'BOaT' are the way the band's insisted on spelling them, not some kind of stupid typo I manage to do regularly

I'll tackle 2:00 songs tonight. I don't know, though--as a matter of common sense, if you have a song that clocks in at 2:00 on one of your media players, the song itself must be under 2:00 allowing for the dead space before and after the song, which is 1-2 seconds minimum.

I had completely underestimated this exercise, the number of songs runs way into the four-digits and it seems to be an art in itself, plenty of these ditties are wonderful little constructions, whether they're short songs, intros, ad-libs, to the point where I'm thinking we should have done genre / purpose subcategories (and maybe a Madlib - Jay Dee special fightoff). I mean, it's really bad.

Under 1 minute would have been more of a challenge, there's hundreds of great songs under 2 minutes.

At first I opened the songs and thought it said the playlist was 1 hour 21 minutes. Then I realized it was 1 day 21 hours.

Same boat of underestimation, Nabozo. I got 11 day on iTunes! Though as I have a lot of live performances I think the vast majority of this are intros, encore breaks, outros, abandoned songs etc.

I also largely ignored punk, grindcore, metal, and short classical pieces from larger movements because there is nothing "special" about the song being short. Though this was really just a coping mechanism to filter down what I had to look through to something manageable.

That's not me, but the reason my own nominations skewed so contemporary is because I was working off of my CD collection (via iTunes). Am planning on going through my vinyl over the next day or two, which will be trickier--I suspect I'll be doing a lot of verification of song lengths--but hopefully this'll get some older material on my list, at least.

ok i have to ask because i don't know how it gets handled - the original recording (track 1 on "doctor who at the bbc radiophonic workshop, volume 1") is 2:22 - as used on television it never runs that long, but 0:39 is in fact a shorter edit. how do we count these?

"Lost" is this great garage thing from 1968 that sounds like it could be Beat Happening or some other lo-fi thing.

i’m sure there’s lots of nuggets-style garage singles that are very good and clock in around 1:57 but, as i said in the other thread, it would be disappointing to me if this roll out ended up being predominantly garage 45s and chuck berry and elvis and fats domino.

it’s much more interesting for me when the brevity is an integral part of the songwriting, or on the other hand when the song feels like a sketch, an idea for a song that is just kinda hanging in mid-air and it’s mysterious or weird (e.g. “can you take me back where i came from ...”) — yknow, rather than a conventional song that just happens to be short.

i like those mysterious fragments too (circulatory system - news from the heavenly loom, 0:24; mu - children of the rainbow, 1:12; most allison, young man's blues, 1:27; the android sisters, huh?, 1:27; captain beefheart, dali's car, 1:27), but a two minute song, even if it's a full song, for me has a certain air to it simply by nature of being concise (squirrel bait - black light poster child, 1:55; giles giles and fripp, digging my lawn (b) (from "the brondesbury tapes"), 1:55; ray cathode, waltz in orbit, 1:56)

neil young - "there goes my babe" - is this the buffalo springfield demo? that one's 1:47. the version that's on neil's archives (the only one i could find under his name) is 2:23

everly brothers - "problems" is a touch over 2 minutes on spotify but the song clearly cuts off several seconds before, so i think it's fine.

jerry lee lewis - "lewis boogie" is the nightmare song. there are about a dozen versions on spotify, and every single one is 2 minutes or more. but the song does cut off a few seconds before. allmusic puts it at 2:02. *throws hands in air, but cares*

kleenex/liliput - "Split" is 2:01, but cuts off a few seconds before.

the luv'd ones - "stand tall" is 2:09 on spotify, and doesn't fade out until 2:05. i am tossing it out. BANNED.

i'm tempted to toss both the jerry lee lewis and liliput songs as well. they're both under 2, if you listen to the song, but if that's the case we're gonna have a shitload of songs that are up to 2:02 or 2:03 but count because they actually cut off a few seconds before that. however, it's late here and i'm very tired, so i'm going to go to sleep and think about something else until i wake up again.

it’s much more interesting for me when the brevity is an integral part of the songwriting, or on the other hand when the song feels like a sketch, an idea for a song that is just kinda hanging in mid-air and it’s mysterious or weird (e.g. “can you take me back where i came from ...”) — yknow, rather than a conventional song that just happens to be short.

Conversely, I thought it was interesting to discover how many songs that I love, and which feel “fully formed,” do indeed happen to be this short. It makes them seem all the more remarkable, in a way. (I couldn’t believe it when I saw “Zurich Is Stained” is only 1:41!)

Iirc the last words are "AND DIE" so I always put something suitably doomy afterwards. Though a particularly peppy upbeat pop song could be a good contrast/FU Crisp move.

I definitely don't think we should restart the poll or anything, and a lot of stuff I think of as filler *will* be someone else's fave, I think I was more just expressing trepidation about dealing with it. I guess I'll pay more attention to the repping phase when voting opens than I will spend time trying to listen to the uber-list.

some bands do a lot of short songs! They Might Be Giants have a ton of them and a lot of them are among their best work. 3/4s of the songs on Double Nickels on the Dime and Pink Flag are under 2:00. Elvis Costello had an unexpected flair for it. I dunno, that's a bit like polling the best prog epics but saying, "you should only nominate one by Yes"...that's the whole point isn't it?

if it's under 2 minutes, it qualifies, but on the nominations list i will specify that it's a remix or acapella version or whatever. just make sure it's actually a song that you will likely vote for and might get more than one vote in the end.

i mean if you want to go through all that work you can but the "too many artists" record will remain. also the fact that no matter how long the nominee list is it's inevitably going to wind up as arbitrary and incomplete. because as soon as the nominations are finished it'll be, you know, what about "sometimes" by key (1:47) or insanity by l-seven (not to be confused with L7, 1:41)?

nah it's a cool idea but in practice i worry it'll turn out like the way the plot of the doctor who episode "ghost light" was described to me (i take their word for it that that is the plot because what i watched was utterly incomprehensible)
