Music from Memory (Label) - Search and Seek

I don't think we'll be destroying anything but because the stuff they release is so broad and, while it's mostly been reissues in the past they are putting out more and more new recording specifically made for the label. Sometimes it's not even easy to tell the reissues from the new stuff. Then there are the compilations (so, the old stuff is not strictly reissues) I think a dedicated MfM thread would be useful.

Lots of enthusiasm from Gaussian Curve album on the albums poll. It's very good, particularly good for working to. Like gr80 on that thread I think the first album is even better. I had no idea until that thread that Young Marco was in the group.

The release I particularly like is Robert Musci's Tower of Silence, which seems to be from the mid 80s but some of it is more recent. Regardless of the sources it does sound very much of a piece as an album. It is absolutely glorious and you need to listen to it RIGHT NOW.

sorry about that garbled opening paragraph.

yes, i was listening to "tower of silence" on my way to work today!

i picked up gigi masin and joan biblioni reissues but have not gotten too deep into them yet

my favorites so far are system's "vampirella" (incredible dutch proto-techno from 1983) and leon lowman's "liquid diamonds" (amazing vaporwave funk from 1980)

The label compilation from last year came with a live mix from Chee Shimzu which is really good, exploring the ~dancefloor~ side of what they do. I love this label so much!

boxedjoy, Thursday, 1 February 2018 12:42 (six years ago) link

The System is British, not Dutch AFAIK. The bio says he worked with Duran Duran and you can hear the connection.

Not checked out the Geoffrey Landers comp properly but 'Breedlove' is of course classic.

Noel Emits, Thursday, 1 February 2018 18:36 (six years ago) link

Gavin, Leeds, Thursday, 1 February 2018 19:27 (six years ago) link

the system sounded very early talk talk-ish to me, back when their label wanted them to be the next duran duran. has anyone head the rest of their album, like the tracks that didn’t make the ep?

faust apes (NickB), Thursday, 1 February 2018 19:28 (six years ago) link

I wish these LPs were less expensive to buy in the States. I love the Gaussian Curve and Gigi comp, a good deal of Outro Tempo, and that Dip in the Pool 12". A lot of the others I've heard go in one ear and out the other, but I very much like this label's aesthetic overall.

Did anyone pick up that Joan Bibiloni comp from a few years back? I'm in love this track:

That does look awesome. Walhalla records from Belgium released two great (well, I only have vol. 2) compilations of Belgian new wave/synth acts from cassette releases.

On topic, apart from the already mentioned Outro-Tempo and Gaussian Curve records I have/love the Denis Mpunga & Paul K. (Congolese/Belgian percussion/synth collab) and Dub Oven (Californian synth/funk/punk) EP's. Basically I check every MfM release my local record shop gets in...

I had been aware of it more or less from the beginning cuz I was living in Amsterdam and had some friends would DJ for Redlight Radio and buy stuff from Redlight Records, but really only paid full attention after this profile on Tako in RA - https://www.residentadvisor.net/features/2530 Gives a decent impression of the 00s crate-digger spirit in Europe, especially after Discogs. It's actually a bit crazy how many of those records have now been re-released even since the feature!

In general, MFM strike me as best case defense of retromania.

There's a good trick with Spotify, you can actually search by label.

If you enter - label:"music from memory" - into the search bar, you should get all the results. Not sure why they don't improve functionality like this tbh.

There is a definite axis, isn't there? Stuff that maybe five years ago would have simply been "balearic" but now its too dark and un-pop to align easily. Music from Africa and South America and Asia that's technically reissues but feels new to the world, and stuff that feels like reissues but is actually contemporary. The kind of thing you feel constantly behind the curve on. Growing Bin, Listen To This, WRWTFWW, whoever. Its a broad realm but it feels niche in its remit, "rolling wormhole" might be the best description?

boxedjoy, Monday, 12 March 2018 20:51 (six years ago) link

its kind of post mutant sounds blog balearic?

Not MfM but also in the same demographic - this reissued album of baroque Danish synthpop by Suzanne Menzel I've been enjoying this week. Some of it is a little eyebrow-raising but fans of weird 80s pop and Julia Holter should investigate

Super thrilled to announce that this Spring we will release the second volume of Outro Tempo! Following on from where the first volume left off, “Outro Tempo II: Electronic and Contemporary Music from Brazil, 1984-1996” takes another dive into the depths of the Brazilian underworld, exploring the rhythms that lurk beneath the Ipanema sunset. A year in the making and again compiled by @johngomezldn it will feature original artwork by @alicequaresma on a beautiful double LP format.

But we’re not done there… to quench your Outro Tempo thirst we are releasing an exclusive teaser EP with the never before heard cassette madness of São Paulo’s Bruhahá Babélico and Individual Industry’s ethereal electro pop on the flip! Check ‘Bruhahá II’ (1987) and be sure to head over to our YouTube for the full track!

the creator has a mazda van (NickB), Thursday, 12 September 2019 20:45 (four years ago) link

It seems to be a father singing about a teenage daughter he can't communicate with and their relationship has broken down so much that she's leaving home and he feels regret. I admit that it's a strange subject matter for a song. I'd never really thought about it before you asked.

Love this Pablo's Eye track from the Stroom compilation, the one called Bardo for Pablo.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I5Mr49X22w4

The album is good but this track is awesome.

(I take it this is the low countries reissuers thread rather than just MfM)

Stroom's pricing angle on Bandcamp kinda frustrates me. It's €12.50 + vat to buy from them on there but you can but it on boomkat for £3.99 (inc vat) and the vinyl was only €16+vat initially. often they put things on at the same price for digital d/l and vinyl and the vinyl includes a digital d/l! MfM too also charge too much for digital only, imo. Obv they both do good work and I'd like to support them on bandcamp, ideally, but it's not very helpful at times.

MfM and the more chill Stroom releases (especially the Cybe album) have been on heavy rotation at Chez Paolo during the current unpleasantness. I've got about £70 worth of MfM records arriving in the post sometime soon as well

paolo, Tuesday, 12 May 2020 08:41 (three years ago) link

xp

No that's totally a peeve with some labels' digital or specifically Bandcamp pricing, especially with the VAT thing. It makes it an awkward choice if nothing 3lse, and takes the piss really as they will be making proportionally more straight profit on the digitial.

70 quid worth of MFM is 2 records right? They're about $35 each in shops here.

brotherlovesdub, Tuesday, 12 May 2020 17:25 (three years ago) link

The Gigi Masin one, the Musica Esporadica one, the Terekke one and the Dip In The Pool single, which is £12.50 for about ten minutes of music but I've not been spending my cash on anything else so I might as well blow it all on records. And they're pretty reasonably priced in the UK for the most part. I think most of their double albums are about £20 or less with nice packaging.

great thread, and wish i would have read it earlier! after eventually landing on gigi masin and listening to the MfM comp and Wind pretty obsessively,
a spotify radio thing based on masin led me to the 2019 Yu Su release Roll with the Punches. it's been...36 hours? i think i have listened to it at least 10 times already. while purchasing the 12" today, i went ahead and grabbed Tower of Silence (30 seconds of "Woman of Water and Music" was more than enough to convince me) and Toshifumi Hinata's Broken Belief, based on the enthusiasm on the thread. i move like molasses but i have noted that i need to look into Stroom as well

in a recent mail order i threw in Toshifumi Hinata's Broken Belief on a whim, based on a few quick listening samples.

it's a collection of his music from 1985-1987, a lot of simple piano/melody lines, warm pads, and samples.

to put it another way: it is somewhere in a space between angelo badalamenti and ryuichi sakamoto

Bit more info on their FB post about it:

Music From Memory is turning 50! Beyond happy to finally announce no less than our 50th release since we kicked things off back in 2013! This time with a special release we’ve been working on for some time now:

VA - Virtual Dreams: Ambient Explorations In The House & Techno Age, 1993-1997 (3xLP/2xCD) is the first in a series of compilations, as well as more in depth artist-focused releases, which will delve into music produced during the 1990’s that redefined the boundaries of ‘Ambient’. This was music that explored the concept of Ambient within a new setting, created often by House & Techno music producers for a world beyond dance floors but made very much with the pre and post-clubbing listener in mind.

Returning to our own first discoveries of Ambient music in the 90s we’ve been revisiting some personal favourites as well as rediscovering amazing music from a youth spent watching Chill-out videos on VHS, staying up all night to watch MTV’s Chill Out Zone as well as some of our earliest dabbles in local record stores.

From Ambient and Chill-out classics, to lesser known one-off projects, as well as Ambient deviations by some of the House and Techno’s leading producers, volume one of Virtual Dreams features tracks by Bedouin Ascent, LA Synthesis, LFO, Marc Hollander, Mark Pritchard & Kirsty Hawkshaw, Richard H. Kirk and more.

Check the video for David Moufang’s stunning track ‘Sergio Leone’s Wet Dream’ from his CD-only album ‘Solitaire’ (1995), released on Peter Namlook’s cult Fax +49-69/450464 label. As always head over to our YouTube channel for the full track and stay tuned for more info!

Volume One of ‘Virtual Dreams’ is released Dec 8th

On Daisyworld, no less, everything loops back to Hosono in the end :)

I'm loving this new comp of 80s Spanish ambient on the Swiss label Bongo Joe. Exactly the kind of thing I expect from MfM.

I wasn't really sure where to put this but it has that 80s 'woody' sound and this seems a good a place as any: jazz album from 1983, with synthesizers and vibes, much of which wouldn't sound out of place on a Gigi record/DJ set.

Western is particularly lovely: https://larrychernicoff.bandcamp.com/track/western

Thanks for the heads-up!
Sort of sounds somewhere btw Penguin Cafe Orchestra and Mother Mallard/David Borden (looks like I already had this Chernicoff album wantlisted on Discogs though, yet another sign of listening to too much music)

Alongside his trio collab with the younger Dutch residents as Gaussian Curve, am still holding out for a synth duo album on, say, Sacred Bones (or MFM, ha) btw Masin and A. Howarth, if only so that they could be billed as Gigi/Alan

Yes, good shout on the PCO! I don't know Mother Mallard/Borden - will have a listen.

So shocked by this. Huge influence musically on me for the last however many years and I'm sure there's a lot of people out there who feel the same. And MfM has changed the lives of some of the artists they've put out, they really were doing god's work. His DJ sets were wonderful too. Terrible loss

This was a fun set of somewhat wonky dance stuff from a few years back with his mfm partner tako:

Very sad news. the genuine excitement of finding MfM in 2014 was a revelation, the sounds, the curation, the packaging.. it changed a lot for me.

Agreed, deeply appreciative for Jamie's positive contributions to my life. Gone far far too soon, RIP.
