damn this is the version of Nick Cave doing it that i should have posted https://youtu.be/QsIPoRTBV44

Bee OK, Thursday, 30 July 2015 02:07 (eight years ago) link

Rowland Stuart Howard wrote "Shivers" at the age of 16 while in the band The Young Charlatans. Howard gained acclaim after joining Melbourne-based band The Boys Next Door, when the song was released as a single. The band changed their name to The Birthday Party and Howard's discordant guitar remained a major factor in their sound.

will be pretty ;_; if Transference is next

soyrev, Thursday, 30 July 2015 06:06 (eight years ago) link

also, would be interested in hearing from the lone rangers who gave telephono and TWMS their #1

soyrev, Thursday, 30 July 2015 06:07 (eight years ago) link

Telephono was my #1. It's the only Spoon album I honestly know backwards and forwards because I've listened to it a gazillion times in the last nearly 20 years.

Johnny Fever, Thursday, 30 July 2015 06:31 (eight years ago) link

TWMS was my #2 and in short it's just full of great songs, far more than Transference, and still impeccably produced. Y'all need to spend more time with it.

Just read the Guardian review which helpfully points out the title track lifts from Barry White and the Love Unlimited Orchestra’s Love Theme.

I'm a sucker for catchy radio friendly singalong melodies btw.

ledge, Thursday, 30 July 2015 11:54 (eight years ago) link

i have a clear first and last but outside of that i really have most of the albums close together, and i like all of them. but even so, twms #2 and better than transference is basically indefensible.

They Never Got You: Great tune that just didn't find a place on my ballot. Gimme Fiction has a great insistent pulse through most of its tracks, it seems like, moreso than Kill the Moonlight.

ha, awesome idea.

re: #35 and 34: They Never Got You I think of as a perfect stripped down groove that could go on for ever as far as I'm concerned. Love the handclaps that top it out. Who Makes Your Money otoh I think of as repetitive hook-free tedium (although the guitar line that comes in half way through ain't bad). Objectively, yeah you could flip those views around and they would make just as much sense.

I love Ga Ga Ga Ga Ga, and it was my 'in' for Spoon, but KTM is just... it's amazing. So tight, so creative, so hooky, so tuneful. So fucking cool. It might be the coolest album I own.

Gimme Fiction was my first Spoon album, bought it on a whim for £4 in a Virgin/Zavvi sale a year or so after it came out. I only really liked a few tracks and I've never really got any further with it. Then someone recommended GCT to me soon after and I loved it, caught up with the back catalogue after that. I don't think they've ever made an outright bad album.

Gavin, Leeds, Friday, 31 July 2015 13:40 (eight years ago) link

i was lost on the albums. just couldn't decide and was changing it daily – and not by little, completely different from one inception to another. top 7 were all interchangeable.

yea thats maybe true. i don't have a go to spoon album, just a go to spoon playlist with like 6-7 songs from every album.

telephono would totally be one of those "underrated post-grunge bands you can find for $2" CDs if the group had broken up after Sneaks. And I'm just surprised if everyone really prefers every disc of their more finger-snappy shooby-doo shit to their most pixies-meets-wire album

Telephono sounds like a Pixies tribute band attempting original material.

Very happy to see Ga Ga Ga Ga Ga as the number one album. It was the first one I heard, I loved it straight away.

Cherry Bomb was the first Spoon song I ever heard, I think I must've played it 10 times that night. It was my no. 4.

nate woolls, Saturday, 1 August 2015 22:36 (eight years ago) link

I found a cool interview on eMusic where Britt Daniel explains some of the songs on the new album. About You Got Yr. Cherry Bomb he said:

That central image of the "cherry bomb" came naturally. Sometimes lines just come to you while you’re singing, and you’re not sure where they came from. I came up with the cherry bomb being representative of a need to blow out this romantic flame. Breaking up — or being broken up with — can be pretty devastating. This song is saying “You need to blow out that flame, we lost it long ago.” It’s actually a really sad song.

We tried this one I don’t know how many different ways. We recorded it three times, and it was one of those songs we really struggled with. At one point we had a kind of “space rock” arrangement — which is a cool version and the people who heard it were like “Ah, I still like that version better,” but this is the one that seemed to work best for me.

That consistent drum beat that runs through the whole song — Jim’s smart like that. Sometimes what a song needs is just a very steady rhythm. Jim’s got a real musician’s point of view about songs. I don’t mean to slander most drummers, but sometimes the drummer’s way of looking at a song is “get your rocks off.” Jim is more about what’s right for the song. One of the first things I noticed about Jim: we met in a recording studio and, after going through a song once, he remembered where all the stops were. He had a real sense for what was going on in the song, which was a very different experience for me.

Bee OK, Saturday, 1 August 2015 22:44 (eight years ago) link

cherry bomb's production is a little too on the nose for me.

I remember hearing "I Turn My Camera On" on the radio and being shocked that Spoon was getting radio play. I actually remember where I was (Bickford's parking lot, Manchester, NH).

Tom Violence, Sunday, 2 August 2015 00:15 (eight years ago) link

I am just now listening to the LP version of "The Mystery Zone" and I think I actually prefer the truncated CD version. That abrupt mid-word cutoff is just hilarious.

Tom Violence, Sunday, 2 August 2015 00:18 (eight years ago) link

i didn't know there was a long version! the cutoff is vital.

austinato (Austin), Sunday, 2 August 2015 00:44 (eight years ago) link

well, if there is a surprise in the top 2, it will be a p enormous one

Roberto Spiralli, Sunday, 2 August 2015 00:45 (eight years ago) link

Gimme Fiction was the first Spoon album I listened to seriously. I bought it on its release date to review it for a tiny local paper in the back woods of New Hampshire. I had heard the first three and I think I had played Kill the Moonlight once, so Gimme Fiction was really out of left field compared to what I expected. I fell in love before the end of the first chorus.

Tom Violence, Sunday, 2 August 2015 00:46 (eight years ago) link

wow that placed high

call all destroyer, Sunday, 2 August 2015 00:46 (eight years ago) link

Bee OK, Sunday, 2 August 2015 00:49 (eight years ago) link

I was the "Black Like Me" #1 iirc, immense, perfect song

the naive cockney chorus (Simon H.), Sunday, 2 August 2015 00:49 (eight years ago) link

"And when you believe they call it rock and roll"

might be Spoon's most rocking tune?

Bee OK, Sunday, 2 August 2015 00:59 (eight years ago) link

I really like the way they call out other songs on the album in the first track on the album. None of their other records are thematically linked like that.

Tom Violence, Sunday, 2 August 2015 01:01 (eight years ago) link

(I mean really it might just be a shortcut to appear thematically linked but)

Tom Violence, Sunday, 2 August 2015 01:01 (eight years ago) link

Really surprised at "Quincy Punk Episode" not hitting. Also would have voted high for "I Saw The Light" mainly for the huge weird extended coda. "Everything Hits" was my unshakeable #1; basically I voted canon (though no "Camera", and "The Way We Get By" would have been v low on my list despite being my entry point into the band). Great poll, great rollout, great images, thanks! Awesome poll. And made me listen to Spoon obsessively over the past couple weeks, which I think is exactly what I needed.

xpost the liner notes for Transference point out that the first and second half of "I Saw the Light" were mixed at two different studios, something else I noticed listening to Transference again tonight. I guess there's a reason the two halves seem like two different songs.

Kill the Moonlight defines my idea of Spoon-y production, and I so love Don't Let It Get You Down for the way the song rolls out, so complete and still so uncluttered. Gives me goosebumps. Should have had a place.

great examination as usual, alfred.

i just sorta shrug, and know they are unfuckwithable, and don't much feel the need to argue it.

the aug 1 2015 spotify, mentioned far above, was playing on my player when i was put into a multi-day coma on the evening of aug 5 2015. after that, i lived in a rehab hospital for a couple months. i don't remember listening to spoon that day- that day is gone from me forever- but i later found other evidence (texts) that the playlist was my listening at that moment. seeing my comments from that week now rips me into shreds.

the last 3 years often have been almost unendurable, despite my outrageous good luck and fantastic group support. but spoon? still unfuckwithable.

three years pass...

Found Transference LP second hand and I'm starting to think it's song qua song my favourite album.

I need to give the last two albums a bit more listening time. I love Spoon

I like Alfred's opening line "Why I like these Austinites mystifies me". I agree. They could so easily be the US equivalent of the Stereophonics if they weren't so damn good at writing great songs and knowing just how far to push the boat out with experimentation so it seems like they're not experimenting.

Transference seems to be where the hard core Spoon fans seems to gravitate too, it has some killer hooks. They Want My Soul is even better for me as it has "Rainy Taxi" and arguably their best overall song "Inside Out" and also "New York Kiss," what an album. Hot Thoughts is their New Order album and i also love it. it is/was an interesting direction that i wish they continued down but it seems they are going back to rocking out...

this poll was so much fun!

Transference is far and away my favorite.

Glad I'm not the only one. That said, while they're not a band I listen to all the time, every album easily has 3-4 top tier songs

Hot Thoughts has become my most played Spoon album, thanks to "I Ain't the One" and especially "WhisperI’lllistentohearit." He sounds sexy as fuck on the latter.
