― Mr. ILX, Saturday, 23 February 2008 17:03 (sixteen years ago) link
The Thirty-nine Steps is an adventure novel by the Scottish author John Buchan, first published in 1915 by William Blackwood and Sons, Edinburgh. It is the first of five novels featuring Richard Hannay, an all-action hero with a stiff upper lip and a miraculous habit of getting himself out of sticky situations.
The novel formed the basis for a number of film adaptations, notably Alfred Hitchcock's 1935 adaptation The 39 Steps, a 1959 colour remake and a more authentic 1978 version.

Kingfish: Your question has nothing to do with ILX.
NV: You question can be answered by simply using the SEARCH link at the top of this page.

Off the top of my head: Sweden, Belgium, Finland, Netherlands, France, Norway, Estonia. There might've been a poster from Italy too, and some guy from Hungary posted on the thread about the Budapest riots a couple of years ago. There was also a poster called Chupacabra who was from some Latin American country, but that was years ago. Several ILXors have lived in Japan, but I think none of them are Japan-born.

dude took his shirt off a lot, what else?
Tonight, on Uppity Women!
Chaki hears that someone's been breaking hearts, awards them honorary Bro status.
He hears that they're a woman.
LONG SHOT: NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO
(training montage)
He finds some bullshit written on a toilet wall, tattoos it on his forearm.
Using TECHNOLOGY, he tracks her to her LAIR and confronts her.
When pressured to come up with something as proof beyond "everyone knows this", he produces the bullshit.
Star of bullshit turns up, says "You all know this is bullshit, right?"
Chaki elected king of the internet.
Is that about it? Have I missed anything here?
I know this is kind of a dickish start to a sentence, but I've wondered occasionally what ILX is like since I've been gone, and it turns out that it's a place where no-one feels the need to imagine why anyone would react differently to them when being challenged.
(Also where you don't need to know what the word 'supposedly' means, Jesus Fucking Christ people it's Comprehension 101)
(deep breath)
nabisco: You've been around a long time man, you know how much people talk and how much they don't. You remember Graham, right, and how when that blew up half of ILX was going "Who, Graham? He seemed so nice!"? Stuff like "if that had somehow magically never occurred to you" is incommensurate with how ILX has always worked.
Also, you know, this is exactly the kind of stuff that you're usually very good at - you've been much fairer to discussing groups of people that you'll never meet and have no direct interest in that you have here with folk who are by internet standards standing in the same room. Unless you're saying that they're all in serious denial, then you have to take them at face value, at which point saying that people are "pointing out" stuff when all they're doing is alluding to some mysterious bullshit is working against the "I'm just being impartial" air of your posts.
I'd have thought, from when Chaki followed her from other threads to here (and I think a factor of this is that you're basically having a fight in another dorm's crash area) to keep barking at her, that it was finally going to blow up. And if it's been kept secret out of consideration for the silent and imaginary wounded, fair enough. But once it's going come out, you'll have the righteously angry on both sides, and one of them is going to end up righteously angry and wrong, so I wouldn't have started with "Bdum-tisch".
If I'm seeming to have a go at you here, I'm not intending to, it's just that you're the last person on ILX that I'd have expected to take the tone of your first few posts, so I'm wondering if I've missed some cast-iron early sign that Chaki wasn't just being a grudgy little fuck.
All the rest of y'all get half a bar.

this is about a former ilxor who left on account of the events described:
XXXX XXXXX (11:42:21 AM): he told me all about it when he was in the middle of it. ok, he msged me and had to tell someone, needed another perspective. and he said, this might seem weird, but tombot and i are in LOVE. so he went on to tell me about how they'd been involved online and on the phone for quite a while, and then he wanted to meet him of course. when he was telling me about this, he kept talking about how he wanted to keep it all a secret. anyway, he spent ALL HIS MONEY (he was unemployed) on a trip to NY. he was staying with friends, but really the trip was to meet tombot. he of course was all "excited" to see him and finally be together and all that shit. he "drove up" from DC. he got there, called his cell phone, he NEVER ANSWERED for the full five days he was there. and then told him afterwards that his phone had been locked in his trunk by mistake! he was so snowed that he believed him. BUT he tried calling him from a friend's cell once during that time, and he answered. then pretended to be someone else and disconnected.

I've been reading ILX since 2007 and had heard references to the Luna fiasco, but never spent the time to figure out what happened. Holy shit!
I have always been a little intimidated by all the seemingly smart people on ILX who know so much about music, movies, books, philosophy, etc. Let's just say that after reading about the Luna thing, I am no longer intimidated. That photo she posted of herself is one of the most hilarious things I have ever seen. Seriously, maybe I am just not a trusting person, but how the fuck could anyone have believed that was her?

I think when you have a well-liked poster that has posted for years claim it as such, it's easy to believe and people are loathe to say anything if they suspect something. At the time, I believed it was a real pic of her (and based on the thread, so did many others), though I would have been just older than 20 and probably pretty naive. Skipping xxx messages at this pointcut-off always fall just after where I want to start reading?― fetter, Friday, March 8, 2019 3:23 PM (one hour ago) Bookmark Flag Post Permalink
Is there a way to increase how many messages get shown before and after the “Skipping xxx messages...” point? Because if not that is numero uno on my ILX want list. Having to scroll through 4,800 posts of a 5,000-post thread just so I can see the start of the latest revive is not fun.
― Mr. Snrub, Friday, 8 March 2019 17:01 (five years ago) link
Here's how to do that:
1 - click permalink on the first post AFTER the cutoff (the one you want to scroll back from)2 - On that new page where that post is the first post shown, decrease the number in the URL that's "bookmarkedmessageid=xxxxxx" Usually dropping it by 200 or 300 will be enough to get you back to where you want, sometimes you have to lower it by 1000 or so. So for instance your message the messageid=7083747, so if I were to lower that to 7083447 it would load messages starting 300 posts back. I believe that post number is site-wide, so that's "300 posts back" counting all posts made on ILX, not this thread.

i don't remember a luna underwear photo but there was a photo that she posted that iirc was a weirdly cropped, candid looking photo of a conventionally good-looking woman in her 20s out at nightclub partying. this didn't jibe with the nerdy shut-in vibe of the poster at all. but clearly excited some of the ilx men

lol! that comment was triggered by mr. snrub's comment, by the way.so it's not entirely out of left field.
frames would be a lot harder. i've taken a look at the code and i saw notrace of it. the only weird thing i saw was the layout of the old posts andnew posts being butchered, which probably happened when the transferover to nu-ilx happened.

― but i'm there are fuckups (Karl Malone), Sunday, 10 March 2019 05:59 (five years ago) link
The Luna thread and 5000+ thread are dual weirdness, all the Luna stuff and then hundreds of posts unrelated to that that were just fighting between cliques like a fictional high school.
ILX had no chill until 2014 and now it always seems super calm.
― Greta Van Show Feets BB (milo z), Sunday, 10 March 2019 06:25 (five years ago) link
the "proudly hosted on photobucket" watermark all over the images on both threads is fucking gold. it's almost always possible to estimate the time frame of visual media from the last hundred years or so - the color grades, the quality, dimensions of the image, instagram filters, etc. an old messageboard thread, even if it didn't have the dates, is now readily identifiable as mid-2000s because of the photobucket mess

LMAO, I just saw the "Rob Brydon's Identity Crisis" documentary on YouTube a few weeks back (I'm crazy about the British TV show "Would I Lie to You" is why) and when Nicky Wire popped up in said documentary, the first thing I thought of was, "Poor guy will never know some crazy person had this innate obsession with putting him in a banana suit." He seemed so normal and so kind and I felt really bad for Mr. Wire. Also, I do wonder if said friend/acquaintance (one of Clive Barker's regulars and someone who does quite a few horror cons) has ever encountered the C-man. I really hope not.
Oh cool, I feel better now about having clicked on some of his Buzzfeed articles.

Anyway, I have one minuscule claim to fame and that's having been written into a "Janet and John" story for Terry Wogan's radio show. No, not "Wake Up to Wogan" but one of his Sunday afternoon live shows.* That and having two questions answered by Nick Rhodes on a BBC-sponsored chat back in 1998 is about as famous as I get.
*: What can I say? "The Dark of the Matinee" was a very powerful argument in Sir Tel's favor.

the eternal now, signified by a lack of tumult (or relatively predictable tumult) in the lives of long-term posters
symptoms include drop-off in number of posters or frequency of posting as people end up more engaged in jobs/family/obligations, less interest in bombastic modes of argument, and the recycling of previous discourse around genre conventions

NYCILX had like separate golden eras when lots of noize bd ppl used to hang all the time, also the adam schefter/ghostrider/mookieproof/jtm/dayo/chinavision/morbs/max etc era which sort of lingers, I'm out of touch now but I vaguely see ppl getting together or fb or w/e.

77 was always a hidden board. stet gave me mod privileges there & put my name in the board name as a gag/experiment after I found the other hidden boards: favorite hidden ILX board
IIRC, at the borad's inception, anyone with access to the board could invite any other ILXor, so it grew pretty quickly. Pretty soon controversial posters showed up and the site admins were forced to lay down some rules.
Now only mods have the power to add people to the board. I don't have mod powers there anymore because I abused them (undeleted a thread that another mod had deleted).

the exclusive content on 77 exceeds the "internet salon" of your wildest dreams. there is absolutely no watercooler talk, and so many great excelsior threads to have a laugh at. and yet because one has to ask to join, it means there is a step to join, so none of this delightful universe of content is available to someone who does not take that step. it makes me sad--sad for ilx, which is now unambiguously split into two groups, one superior (77 regulars) and one inferior (non-members of 77). i am sad for the inferiors though happy to be one of the superiors. it is, truly, bittersweet.

I'm tired of hearing "77 is an elitist board where it's an exclusive club and blah blah blah..." talk. It is not.
Anyone with an ilx account that hasn't come from out of the fuckin blue is welcome to post on 77. The only catch to 77 is that it is de-indexed.
Not so people can fuckin gossip about shit. I'm going to break a rule and post some current threads running over there:
• Depression and anxiety and how we try to deal • moments when you seriously believe all of popular culture has been reduced to fan service • commiserate about your ptsd symptoms • graphic design, 1986-94• Tracksuit-clad-Mila-Kunis-grabs-solitary-caffeine-hit-way-pilates-class.html • 77 thread for teachers who don't want to lose their jobs
Any of you old regulars who boo-hoo about the existence of 77, tell me where else sensitive topics like depression or ptsd should be discussed? Out in the open with the rest of our Googleable zany threads? Do you not see why that would be an issue?
Swear to God if you say "in a pub," I'm gonna FP you so fast.

BTW, it fills me with great ire to see people disparaging the "This is the thread where I say" series of threads when the only despicable aspect of the threads was that it had as one of its regulars a grifter. None of you motherfuckers seem to want to acknowledge that at the time those threads were ongoing, ILX was EXTREMELY cliqueish and if you didn't happen to live in one of the geographical areas whose own chatty threads overran ILE, you were fucked. Nowadays ILX doesn't need a TITTWIS thread because I see that the lines of discussion are far more catholic (e.g. the "Irrationally Angry" thread series), but back when they existed they were very much in fucking need. Y'all complain about 77 but it seems infinitely more open than ILX was back in those bad old days. Hell, even the Noize Boarders were more open and welcoming than the NYC/L.A./Australian/New Zealander/Glasgow/Londoner cliques, and they were practically KIDS at the time.

Anyway, as far as Chaki is concerned, the only person he owed an apology to in the era of "unveiling Luna" is Sam and if he's already done that he's fully in the clear and need not apologize to anyone else, least of all Luna. I will never forgive her for taking advantage of that particular unnamed person. He was a very kind man and didn't deserve a single bit of that.

Yes, but thousands of miles away from NYC and L.A., smack dab in the middle of Texas. Oh, and I don't mention the Chicago crew (even though they had their own geographical thread series) because the vast majority of them also participated in the TITTWIS thread series so it's as if that clique never even existed in the first place.
It seems as though the only thing you'd need to do to join 77 is ask the person in charge? Which, BTW, I'll do right now just to see how easy it is. Will report back.

The middle of Texas is about one thousand miles from L.A. How many miles do you think gem lived from kate?
Look, your argument only holds water if there had been a thread series devoted to people from the whole of the continental U.S., and a thousand miles might as well have been as far as we are to Mars to me back then, having just been saddled with the responsibility of caring for my mom as I did at the time. I couldn't even do a sleep study at a local clinic a handful of miles away without it being a huge production! TITTWIS had zero geographical restrictions. You could be several thousand miles apart but still converse about anything and everything. I just happened to bring the tone of the conversation down a lot because of the aforementioned untreated depression and anxiety issues, but pretty much everyone else was a solid conversationalist and everyone welcomed everyone else who was into conversing back and forth. I see this happening on a wider basis these days and that's awesome to me. This board feels infinitely more like a cohesive community. It should have always been this way.
Then don't join... ? However, also don't complain about its existence when you refuse to do the one (ONE!!!) thing required to join.

a thousand miles might as well have been as far as we are to Mars to me back then,It’s over three thousand real actual Earth miles from Perth to Christchurch. It’s five (5) miles from Kelvingrove to Parkhead. If you really think these are comparable geographic “cliques,”might I gently suggest that you were projecting your resentment at the time, and not that posters in each were behaving in identical manners.People talk about sports in lots of threads on ILX; this is not because they have formed a clique to keep me out, it’s because they’re interested in that sport.
― steven, soda jerk (sic), Sunday, 17 March 2019 18:41 (five years ago) link
No, that's not it, I don't want to belong to a club where people have to ask to join. It’s bemusing how you’re able to post here without ever having requested to register an account and then receiving a secret password via email Branwell was not an Australian who typed her name in lowercase, you maniacs
― steven, soda jerk (sic), Sunday, 17 March 2019 18:44 (five years ago) link
I think it’s more that geography-based threads, even if all the posters aren’t in the same location, are based on an affinity? and they were some of the more active ile spacesso yeah, it’s like sports, where there is not a barrier to entry per se, but a lack of common ground to just jump in and banter tbh there are currently repeated references to a “her” meaning some racist/nationalist australian political figure on a couple threads about the recently-egged fascist and I’ve got to circle back and find out what that’s about, or decide if I really want to know about more about despicable figures around the world. little details like that make joining in on some discussions opaque. not impossible, just a feeling like I’m listening in

People talk about sports in lots of threads on ILX; this is not because they have formed a clique to keep me out, it’s because they’re interested in that sport.
I'm willing to concede that the discussion on those geographical threads may have been more of a wider nature than I'd expected, but I did see the titles of those threads with the anticipation that the only topics of discussion would be topics of interest solely to those people living in said geographical areas. With TITTWIS I knew the topic of discussion was the human condition in general; work woes, e.g., are universal no matter where you live. Maybe the lines of discussion in the geographical threads originally began with topics of special interest to those in those areas, but evolved to be more all-encompassing. It's too late for me to find out, though I have found a wider measure of acceptance with regard to the people I've been able to make FB friends with from this forum community. In fact, it's because of my interactions with those people that I've recognized that even at its clique-iest, ILX had zero hope of being even remotely as "stuck in high school"-esque cliqueishness (IDC if that's even a word) as some of the former '80s teenaged girls I "met" via one Duran Duran fan community in particular, who closed ranks around each other and completely shut everyone else out. NO ONE here was even REMOTELY that bitchy, or could ever hope of being. That's one major benefit this forum community has had over the old Duranie community I used to belong to, that caused me to flee to this one (nb: I'm not talking about the old Tiger List mailing list, just in case anyone was wondering).
― The Colour of Spring (deethelurker), Sunday, 17 March 2019 19:00 (five years ago) link
Yeah, it's not that I had the anticipation of any of them being "unwelcoming", it's just that I felt the topics of conversation would be of interest solely to those people living in that geographical area. Which wouldn't have been noticeable if those geographical topics comprised a small minority of the conversational threads, but for awhile there it seemed as though those were the only conversational threads available aside from the TITTWIS series, which I always regarded as more of a free-for-all.
dee is mega welcome on 77 though
Love you too, mh! Anyway, see how easy it would be to be in with THAT "in crowd"? If even *I* can pass muster... !

Every thread is a conversational thread.A thread about a baseball team is not excluding me; it’s including people who have an interest in baseball. A thread about a concert in Glasgow (by an artist that isn’t Duran Duran) is not excluding you; it’s including people who have an interest in that musical artist.

A thread about a baseball team is not excluding me; it’s including people who have an interest in baseball. A thread about a concert in Glasgow (by an artist that isn’t Duran Duran) is not excluding you; it’s including people who have an interest in that musical artist.
But a thread about baseball would hold zero interest for me since I have zero interest in the topic. However, I do listen to a considerably greater number of musical artists than just the one (it's just that for a long time I thought I only had the right to discuss a musical artist if I had the amount of knowledge about them as I did with DD); it's just that the hypothetical "thread about a concert in Glasgow" would hold interest with me only if it was about one of those musical artists of which/whom I am a fan. Like, what do I have to contribute to a discussion about what's going on in a place I've never even visited? Unless I was planning to visit said place, which was at the time about as remote as the possibility of that aforementioned conjectural trip to Mars, such a thread would hold nothing of interest to me. I did say I was willing to consider the possibility that the geographical threads opened themselves up to more general discussion; if so, I am sorry for having misjudged them. However, I do not see why one series of GENERAL conversational threads is getting all the ire when all the other threads of that type that existed at the time aren't being treated likewise.
Again, you were TWO THOUSAND MILES CLOSER to L.A. than posters in that “geographical area” were to each other. You were even on the same continent!
I’m not saying these things to chide you btw - rather in the hope you can find some greater chill now and let your 2003 attitude feel more distant :)
Oh, I'm a lot more chill and less emotionally fragile than I was back in 2003, or even in 2013; it's amazing what a couple of years of therapy and some medication can do to a person! But did you miss the whole "I couldn't even dream of going out of town because of parental caregiving duties" situation I told y'all I was in back then? I've only been able to travel since my mom died in July 2015. I got to meet one of the London ILXors as a result. FB has been amazing in terms of being able to interact with other ILXors (both former and current). Anyway, my sole wish is that people stop picking on the TITTWIS thread because it's getting so unfairly shat upon.
― The Colour of Spring (deethelurker), Sunday, 17 March 2019 19:28 (five years ago) link
sic I get where you’re coming from but it’s having the reverse effect
I mean, this is why people mostly lurk in places, even when the topic is native to them, there’s a perceived barrier of entry!
I mean, if everyone lurking was only doing so because they had nothing to say, then most posters would be better off lurking
ahem

xpost mh: yeah I guess so but I've typed all this so:
But a thread about baseball would hold zero interest for me since I have zero interest in the topic.
So there's no need to criticise people who posted about baseball 15 years ago for excluding you.
Like, what do I have to contribute to a discussion about what's going on in a place I've never even visited? Unless I was planning to visit said place, which was at the time about as remote as the possibility of that aforementioned conjectural trip to Mars, such a thread would hold nothing of interest to me.
So there's no need to criticise people from New York and London for excluding you by answering when one person from Glasgow asked about going to see Diamanda Galas in 2003.
I did say I was willing to consider the possibility that the geographical threads opened themselves up to more general discussion; if so, I am sorry for having misjudged them.
You blanket criticised the people having conversations in every "geographical" thread for being clique-ish, as though they were shunning anyone from outside a 2.5 mile radius, or a 1,300 mile radius, and as though they never had conversations outside those threads. Criticising people who had never met for finding it pleasant to talk to each other because they got along, while praising the group of people who had never met that you found it pleasant to talk to.
However, I do not see why one series of GENERAL conversational threads is getting all the ire when all the other threads of that type that existed at the time aren't being treated likewise.
Anyway, my sole wish is that people stop picking on the TITTWIS thread because it's getting so unfairly shat upon.
There are 900 posts in this thread, and none of them are directing ire towards a thread where people talked about their dogs and jobs 15 years ago. There's one post, from one person, shitting upon it eleven years ago. (In the context of calling chaki a hero for calling luna fake, from a poster who most recently quit the board after calling another poster fake.)
Other people have lives and circumstances, too. Unless you know that gem somehow could have afforded the money and time to spend $5,000 and 40 days each weekend going to visit duane by boat, and only didn't because she was snobby and exclusionary even within her own geographical area, then your personal circumstances FOR WHICH EVERYONE HERE HAS EVERY SYMPATHY do not make anyone else an arsehole.
Facebook is objectively a social cancer that is literally destroying democracy; you're bringing a positive attitude to your use of it because you talk to people that you like there. Other people brought a positive attitude to talking about seeing Diamanda Galas in 2003.*
*even Tracer who was simultaneously outraged that a trained opera singer with a four-octave vocal range had not wanted to inhale smoke while at her job, five years earlier

See, a thread about Diamanda Galas would be more interesting for me to read because music fans share a commonality based on adoration of a particular art form and I would be interested in finding out which song(s) excited the audience, particularly if I were in the mood for musical exploration. Like, it was ILX that got me into The Fall, a musical artist I wouldn't have been curious about were it not for the posts I read on here that got me curious about Mark E. Smith and co.! Anyway, sic, I don't think you get what it's like to be someone's primary caregiver on top of holding down a full-time job or else you'd understand how much of one's life is wholly consumed by that (especially since I was expected to stay with my mom every time she was hospitalized) and we're talking in circles anyway, so before we waste more board bandwidth talking in circles let's just give this particular topic a rest, ok?
Tracer, I saw another photo from that photo series posted by Ally on FB!
