Didn't think your question was assholish at all. And it's a good
question, too. My only response is: well, if babyspeak was
never used, then perhaps the otherwise cold, drab looking
protocol would seem less frivolous? less fun?
I don't really see the babyspeak as a separate thing of its own,
though. I see the more colorful way to pepper one's comments an as
entire phenomenon -- with thanks to the freedom to post in HTML --
and the babyspeak is just one variant of that.

Hoi! Dastoor, I only ever use the word wuv sparingly (and it does
have a defined seperate meaning of like but wouldn't go to bed with).
Babyspeak is not what I do. That said, style is style (but don't
mistake Babyspeak for Molesworthisms).
