Did the New Forrest bike ride on saturday, Your pub recommendation for Yarmouth was top, kate. I got interactive with a crab. Got back to the house about 10 cracked open a beer, saying I'll just have the one, took a sip and was asleep before my head hit the backrest of the chair.

The mystery bike is gone. It went as it arrived, in mystery!

Ah, see, I was wondering if you were actually in IoW or if you were reccomending to a friend! Good lord, I hope you didn't spill beer all down yourself if you fell asleep drinking.

I spent most of the weekend cleaning my flat (oh boy, spring cleaning was needed) and going through the Cupboard of DOOM. So much of my life in boxes under the stairs. Was looking for that Ladyfest single because someone asked if they could buyone (I know it's not for us, it's for the Gossip on the B-side) and found so much stuff I had forgotten about. Various layers of my life. Tons of Lollies stuff. Tons of Dandy Warhols stuff underneath that. (God, I need to get a tape player, I had forgotten about things I had - the very first BJM demo on tape.) Years and years of drawings. The first issue of CTCL. Man...

Friday night was a disaster, though. Proud is a really interesting space - got a psychedelic roof garden on top of the Stables with freight trains running through - though I just wish it wasn't in Camden. Now I remember why I don't go out there. Hoxton may have its hipsters, but Camden is full of WANKERS. Awful support bands, AWFUL crowd, the fuckers wouldn't shut up EVER, talking through Sonic Boom's set to the point where I could barely hear during the quiet bits of "Honey". And the fucker sound man turned Sonic Boom off after FOUR AND A HALF SONGS!!!!

I was outraged. It's not like they were ending the night. The DJs kept going. It was the awful, awful support bands' fault for going on too long - and then committing that terrible sin of leaving the stage and disappearing LEAVING ALL THEIR CRAP SET UP so that Sonic ended up having to move it all aside himself. (And then the support band were talking through his set - I wanted to kill them. I did the folkie SSSSHHHHH hiss and told them I hadn't paid to listen to them talk to their girlfriends.)

Four and a half songs. Bloody hell.

SB was in good form, though. It wasn't E.A.R. wub, he was actually playing songs - we got that Silver Apples homage, a Kraftwerk cover (Hall of Mirrors), and Honey before he was cut off.

Grrrrrrrrr.

That sucks, big time.

Yes IOW was for me, no more than three hours sleep any night last week and 40 miles in the saddle has damned near killed me.

Best bit was cycling up from the pub with no weight on the bike but me. A kilometre uphill in under two minutes is so much fun.

You biking people sound crazy. I'm down on bikes this weekend because my upstairs neighbour's bike actually pulled my kitchen drain away from the wall, so my dishwater went everywhere. I had to ask her to move it somewhere else. :-(

I woke up at 7 today and couldn't get back to sleep so I actually went for a walk up Sunny Hill. Huffed and puffed. Lord knows how, but I've actually lost some weight in the past few days.

No one's listened to our CD - or at least not commented on it. Well, Ian commented to say that he hasn't listened to it yet because his girlfriend's been listening to it, heh. :-)

It's just really hard when you get *no* feedback from anyone. That's harder for me to cope with than negative feedback.

And it's been getting me down lately to go to all these shows lately with men, men, and more men all over the stage, and never a woman, and it makes me feel like we don't have a chance because of gender, before we've even played a note. :-(

You could all hide behind me and then jump out and shout 'surprise' after a couple of songs.

From now on, I shall simply be a mang. Maybe then people will take me seriously.

I think I've just got too much of a sense of humour for dronerock. Seriously.

I don't know. I look at these boys quoting their Stockhausen and everything and it's all... well, yes. But you can't live entirely in your head like a disembodied brain (as much as that appeals to me).

I can't help poking fun at things, even when - *especially* if - I love them.

I kind of understand Chris's old rants about "stupid floppy boys motionless and droning on stage because they're too scared of not looking cool" when I see some bands. (those awful fuckers on Friday night.)

But where is the sense of joy, of abandon? Laughter and giggling, is that too feminine?

Oh, I don't know. It's all sexual display anyway. Those bands in Camden really wound me up, the boys onstage, all in their skinny jeans and their stupid Horrors haircuts and the girls stand round and take photos or just dance, and that's it, that's your role, receptor for male signal.

I approve of fun, but I also stopped reading the wire, nme, etc. many years ago. I also approve of talent on stage of whatever gender, but you are right there seem to be less girls making rock and roll than ten years ago.

But there AREN'T less girls making rock/pop. It's just become so bloody gender segregated!

My sample size is smaller than yours. But you are right, some of the best bands I have seen recently, like TSDOLE, Flowers of Hell, Circulus etc. have been mixed gender bands making music that is evidently of either gender.

just to let everyone know we had nothing to do with Pete having
the plug pulled on his set last night. It was done by the Proud Gallery,
because the live curfew is midnight, (It was 3 minutes past 12.)

I'm still in disbelief, Pete has been playing for 20 like years or something.

I'm quite proud of that one, really. ;-)

What a weird, weird world. I wish I could have seen either show.

Oh, also got a snarky comment back from the bloke who runs UFO, saying "don't on hate us, hate the venue!"

And I feel like writing back "err, actually as the promoters, if you are aware that there is a live music curfew, it *is* your job to ensure that the bands don't overrun it. And that does mean ensuring that support bands get on and off stage promptly and on time, and if they start to overrun, pull the plug on a support band, rather than the headlining band that people have actually PAID to see."

I mean, what is the venue supposed to do? It's freaking Camden, the council is a bitch! If they overrun their curfew, they would lose their liquor liscence.

Kate, while I pretty much agree with you that the promoter should be responsible for time management (I've had several experiences with having to play only four songs, sometimes even three), it is sometimes hard to be fair to everyone, and a lot of the time promoters end up banking on the venue being nice (which is silly, I know) or just don't realise how closely they're cutting it. It sounds like they're just as upset as you, so don't be too harsh.

I'm still on exam lockdown at the moment, so nothing particularly interesting has been happening. Although the last time I went out there was renewed discussion of the 'Sci-Fi Party', our much-planned-never-organised kraut night spectacular. We're thinking about trying to do it this summer, but we can't think of a band to ask to play. Any ideas? (Has to be as krauty as possible.)

Ooh, I can contribute to this thread for a change. We finally set up the record player for the first time in 4 years (well, Sarah set it up, and in fact it was a turntable left behind by my former flatmate Paul - quite a decent make, apparently), and had a fun nostalgia session on Saturday. So on Sunday I went round my parents' and took home another 70 or 80 records - left about 300 behind still, but we don't have all that much room.

I shall be spending most of the next week listening to Senseless Things and Mega City Four 7 inches, and weeping over my long lost hair.

oh well that explains why the 2 weeks were a nightmare.

I wanna send him those photos, because I think it's hilarious, but am afraid of coming off totally creepy. I wouldn't think twice about sending something funny to any other friend of mine normally, but I just feel like a freak. I asked Bob to take a pic of his pedals because I was curious about the Z-vex.

I hate feeling like this. It's like I can't even feel something nice about someone, can't feel any kind of admiration, without feeling a corresponding wave of self loathing.

Which only makes me seem like more of a freak.

Disintegration Loops turns out to be this guy who I knew/worked with in NYC. He lived in this amazing converted brewery in Williamsburg. We used to call him Z-man because he threw these incredible parties/happenings. He was so much fun to record with. I'd be in the bathroom for the reverb, and the other singer would be rolling around on his bed (this incredible stage set of a 4-poster goth monstrocity, I loved it).

HI DERE I'm writing a new datafeed to deal with HIPS right now actually. Although at the moment we're not going to do anything with the HIPS and energy efficiency data, just have to add columns to tables and stuff for now. HIPS shit has yet to hit fan here but it's coming soon...

Another music question. The turntable that we've set up is a Rega Planar 2, and when it's on 33 it is noticeably slow even when it's up to speed. Can anyone suggest why this might be (not being used for several years maybe?) and what we can do to fix it. Would a new belt help?

Argh Dell HATE HATE HATE. Last night (my birthday) I think I actually died and went to *your* heaven. My band is on tour and we ended up playing with a shoegaze band with DDB TWINS in it (guitars/vox, both of em) who played twin Vox amps and pedals galore, stripey shirts, blonde hair, baggy-in-the-ass trousers, the whole 9. Anyway, then we stayed at their house and they gave me pitchers of beer and bags of doja and walked around half nude playing Dead Meadow. Just thought I needed to share this with you.

GREAT practice last night! It was POUNDING. The number we're planning to play at the end, Mark was SHREDDING, I don't know whether to try to get him to tone it down or tell him to go for it. At certain points it sounded like "Phaedra" meets "Funhouse", OMG.

I was going to be one of the bands on the night, but it all kinda fell through in a way.

1) It turns out that Amber 'has another gig booked on the same night', i.e. singing with her school choir at Reading's Hexagon theatre. Which is way bigger than I ever managed.

2) 'My' drummer/producer became a father recently, and 'doing the music' stuff is very on the back-burner.

It all means that I can't even make it to the gig, which is a real shame as it looks like being one heck of a brilliant night. I've dropped my track from the compilation as it's not going to be ready in time (it was too long anyway), so if Ken C gets his done over the weekend, it'll be on.

I'm aiming to get CD's ready for the night, so it hangs on Ken's track (and cover art of one kind or another), and you know how I've banged on about it being brilliant. Well, it is.

Kate has my schedule for the next 12 months, which reminds me I need to amend.

Ed, you or Lisa need to make an online scheduler thing because I've already forgotten both of your schedules.

If you're good with photoshop, it would probably be best to. I mean, I would just erase some of the text - if yr really good with photoshop, you could chop and move and resize the letters to make it say anything you like - that's what I was planning on doing. But I need both hands to do that. :-(

Actually I was listening to the song that was on before it in my Windozchoons and it came on, and I was laughing at the "ha ha, mad Germans" talking bit at the beginning and then I got all carried away with the keyboard noises. It's a synth album and I think I was in a guitar mood last time I listened to it.

Mind you, I'm only 3 tracks in. In another half hour I could be chucking my headphones across the room again.

That Walter Wegmuller album is great! Much the best of that Cosmic Jokers/ Cosmic Couriers stuff. I think I also prefer to anything else Klaus Schulze and Ash Ra Tempel ever did. Plus it's full of guitars!

Heh, the drums on some of that early ashra stuff are a bit pitter-patter-pitter-patter, aren't they. I always laugh when I read KDM praising KS's drumming. I still think they're great anyway (apart from seven up, that is)

I don't know. Somewhere on ILM I once set out my Krautrock hierarchy. Basically, the famous bands are the best, by miles. I prefer electronic/ motorik/ experimental to the more rock/ jammy stuff. Also I don't like the jazz rock (of which there is LOADS) much.

I meant the FITEing, not the krautrock talk. Trying to stop krautrock talk on the 'Cooler is like trying to stop the sun from shining. And why would I want to do that?

Yesterday I was jammed into a Central Line train stuck waiting for signal for like 10 minutes between Bank and Liverpool Street. It was already completely ramjam and the driver made one of those fake 'we'll be moving in two minutes' which caused woman next to me to go wry with comment about special extendo-Tube-time.

On the one hand being stuck in this furnace was grim, on the other, sweat-lodged away a couple of pounds as if by magic.

It's a brit horror biker movie, with Beryl Reid as a 'clairvoyant', and the plot is basically "don't fear the reaper" crossed with the front of the "Bat out of hell" LP cover, made in 1972.

And I've DVD Recorded it.

Hols CJ, I am going to the Primavera Sound festival, which I have posted about several times. It'll be the third time I've been; am looking forward to seeing Slint, Sonic Youth, Jonathan Richman, Billy Bragg, Durutti Column, White Stripes and the Fall, among others!

I meant to record Psychomania but for some reason had it in my head that it was on Monday night, not Sunday, so completely missed it. Can't remember much about it from when I saw it last, so am royally miffed with myself.

My parents live in Nakameguro. It's the GREBTEST neighbourhood EVAH. In Tokyo anyway. Ginza? Don't go there much anymore. I've been in Japan more times than I can count. More than a dozen times, I just lost count. It *is* a fantastic place, but, y'know, I'm growing a bit blase about it all. I wanna go other places.

Nah, just tired, taht's all. And leaving husband behind. And Ophelia had two infections past couple of weeks, still on antibiotics so I'm afraid it might return (when we go off the meds).

Nath, Nick's fave neighbourhood was Nakameguro when he was living there in I think 2000? And probably still is. He is flatting in Ginza because he swapped with someone for his place, for a month.
